LOKA KALYAANA KAMYAARTHA
RAJATHA MAHOTSAVAM
Significance of the Function
The 2009 marks the 25th year since the consecration of the Baalaalaya of our temple. During this period, many milestones have been crossed
due to the blessings of our Lord and the generosity of our devotees. To celebrate the past and welcome the future, ten days of festivities are
planned starting October 2, 2009. This year the world has also been witnessing unprecedented hardships in the form of natural calamities,
wars, pandemic, financial turmoil in the form of increased unemployment and loss of material values (like the crash of the stock and real
estate markets) and loss of peace, prosperity and contentment in general. To alleviate these sufferings and to provide good health, material
prosperity, spiritual strength and upliftment to the congregation and the world at large, several Pujas and Homams have been scheduled.
While encompassing special worship for all the Deities in the temple, these rituals also confer unique blessings and grace for overcoming
the difficulties and obstacles, for conferring good health and longevity and for fulfilling the material and spiritual desires of the participants
and sponsors. Some of these special benefits are indicated in parentheses in the program highlights. The scriptures declare “Kalau Sankirtaye
Kesavam” (meaning in the Kali Yuga singing the names of the Lord is one of the simplest and easiest ways to realize the Godhead).
Renowned experts in Namasankeertanam, Kovai Jayaraman and Party from India will lead the devotees in this popular and uplifting experience.
The Pujas and Homams are led and conducted by the Acharyas of the temple accompanied by learned priests from India. Devotees
are encouraged to participate in these festivities and partake in the blessings of the Lord. For details of the program see page 3 or visit ssvt.
Sarpabali
(Tuesday, October 13, 2009)
Sarpabali is the worship of Lord Nagaraja (on the day of Ashlesha
(Ayyilyam) star in the solar month of Kanya) to ward off the bad effects
of Sarpa Dosha, to help mitigate and eradicate the problems of
skin diseases, to help people in search of life partners find suitable
spouses, for progeny (Putra Bhaagyam) and for the overall wellbeing
of all. (Sarpa Dosha may be present due to harm done to snakes
and other reptiles in the past births and due to other causes. Sarpa
dosha is recognized when all the other grahas in one’s horoscope lie
between Rahu and Ketu. Sarpa dosha is often a reason for late marriages).
Turmeric powder, rice, milk, coconuts, fruits and flowers are
the ingredients generally brought by devotees for Sarpabali. In order
that all devotee offerings are used in the puja, devotees are requested
to make them available before the start of the puja. Sarpabali will be
performed in the Kerala Tantric style from 7:00 to 8:45 pm. Sankalpam
for the Puja will begin at 6:30 pm.
Sponsorship: $25.

Deepavali falls on Friday, October 16 this year. Deepavali (meaning
the row of lights), is celebrated in different ways in many parts of
India. In Bengal it is celebrated as Kaali Puja. In most other parts it
Skanda Shashti Festival
(Sunday, Oct. 18 – Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009)
Skanda Shashti marks the triumph of Lord Subrahmanya over the
evil Sura Padma. The son of Lord Siva killed the demon Sura Padma
with His Holy Spear (Vel) and brought relief and joy to the suffering
celestials and humans. Allegorically the Vel represents the Jnaana
Shakti (Power of Wisdom) of the Lord and Sura Padma the demon of
Ego and Ignorance within us. Lord Subrahmanya is hence considered
to be the lord of wisdom who dispels our ego and ignorance. The
devotees of Muruga (as Lord Subrahmanya is called in several parts
of the world) observe austerities such as fast and mouna vratham in
the five days preceding Skanda Shasti as well as on that day. The
Shashti Vritam begins on Sunday, October 18 and ends on Friday,
October 23. The day after Skanda Shashti is celebrated as Devasena
Kalyanam. Participation in these Archanas and Homam is believed to
ward off evil and usher in peace and prosperity.
MahaSudarshana Homam
(Yagnam) (Sat., Oct. 17 – Sun., Oct. 18, 2009)
Sudarshana, the holy discuss (wheel) in the hands of Lord Narayana
(Vishnu), is the embodiment of the power of Lord Vishnu in destroying
the evil and protecting the righteous as he took the shape of the
claws in Narasimha Avataram, arrows in Rama Avataram, axe in Parasurama
Avataram and Chakra (wheel) in Krishna Avataram. Hence
the worship of Sudarshana as a devata (deity) is extolled in Vaishnava
agama Sastras. Worship of Sudarshana bestows good knowledge and
good faculties as the syllable “Su” stands for “Good” and “Darshana”
for “Vision”. SSVT will be conducting a grand Sudarshana homam
followed by an abhishekam on Sunday, October 18, to enable devotees
Modern Strategies & Hindu Concepts
Achieving Personal Effectiveness & Professional Success in the
21st Century - October 10, 1:30 pm to 4 pm
Prof. V. Sivakumar,( Retd.), of SC State System of Private Colleges
and Universities, will present on this topic. It has been well-received
by other Indian American audiences in other parts of North America.
Prof. Sivakumar’s talk will emphasize the fact that the Indian Religious
(Cultural) Values and Practices are very relevant for progress
in Life, not only in India but also, in the US, Canada and other Industrialized
Western Nations. One will be able to note that these “Values
“ are not any different from the “Western Values” which today’s
youngsters (of Indian Origin) seem to easily embrace even in India
leave alone the US and other Western Nations. Prof. Sivakumar will
try to bring out the essence of “Hinduism” concisely. This lecture
should help today’s youngsters to succeed in their chosen studies/
careers with ethical/moral values and contentment. He can be contacted
at sivakumar@howardcc.edu.
Dr. Pradeep Kamath will continue with the discussion of the Upanishads
Ras Panchadhyayi of the Bhagwatam- Nov. 8-14
A 7-Day Series by Swami Nikhilanand
In this one week series, Swami Nikhilanand of JKP Barsana Dham
will unravel the mysteries of the Ras Panchadhyayi, the 5 chapters of
the Bhagwatam explaining the maharas leela performed by Krishn,
Radha, and the Gopis.
It will be revealed why the Ras Panchadhyayi is the most important
part of the crown jewel of the Hindu scriptures, the Bhagwatam.
What is maharas? Why did the Gopis get to do maharas with Radha
Krishn? Why did Shukdeo, a gyani Saint of the highest class, abandon
his state of absolute samadhi in order to hear the description of
maharas? What is the topmost Bliss of the Divine world? While answering
these questions, it will be explained how the philosophy of
the Bhagwatam goes beyond the teachings of other scriptures and
tells the highest form of dharm. Swami Nikhilanand learned the secrets
of the Bhagwatam and the Ras Panchadhyayi from his Spiritual
Master Jagadguru Shree Kripaluji Maharaj in India. He resides at
Shree Maharajji’s U.S. ashram, Barsana Dham in Austin, Texas. The
program will be held in the SSVT Homa Kundam Room. The timings
are: Sat & Sun 4:00-6:00 pm, Mon-Fri 7:00-8:30 pm.
