This set of Irvington Farms sale cattle represent many years of careful selection to combine the right genetics and
performance to produce highly desirable Angus cattle. These cattle are easy fleshing, fertile and possess strong
mothering ability. Repeat buyers are a testimony to the success of this breeding program.
Fellow Cattlemen,
Welcome to the dispersal of Billy King’s Irvington Farms’ cow herd. Getting ready for this year’s sale has seemed
harder than years past, but due to Granddaddy’s declining health, it is time to sell his beloved cows. He is still able
to kick up his heels, just not as high as he used to. Through the years of breeding Holsteins, and then the switch to
Angus in 1966, his focus remained the same to produce GREAT females. Udders, fertility, fleshing ease, maternal
ability, predictability, prepotency, and searching out those great female lines were his focus. Never one to chase a
fad, these principles were adhered to. He never chased the bigger framed cattle of the 80s or the extreme carcass
cattle that we see today. He chose to stay the path through all of this and produce mid 5-frame cattle that could
survive on the grass here in the southeast with minimal supplement, produce a calf every year, and be profitable for
us and our customers.
I hope that you will choose to take advantage of this opportunity to select from a herd that has been bred with the
same goals in mind for 40 years.
Thank you for attending,
Chris
P.S. On a personal note: Thanks to all the people that have called to first ask about granddaddy and second to ask about my plans.
For the foreseeable future, I will continue to run mine and my kids cattle here, and along with Cloud Bros., plans are being made for
us to have a joint production sale here next year on the same weekend. We have also started a donor management enterprise that
you will see more on in the future.
It is truly with mixed emotions that I welcome you to this Irvington Farms Sale. It has been my pleasure to work with the fine folks at
Irvington Farms, Inc. for the past nine years.
The first time I came to Irvington Farms, the gentleman that met me was Mr. Billy. During our somewhat turbulent ride through the
pastures in his much needed four-wheel drive pickup, it became apparent that Mr. Billy was a man of passion, energy and great
enthusiasm.
Billy King is one of those rare breeders of livestock that developed a nationally noted Holstein herd before the invention of computers.
He had the ability to select cattle with that second sense that few individuals are blessed to possess. When he selected Angus cattle
to form the foundation of Irvington Farms he chose cattle with that same God-given ability. He relied heavily on the genetics at Wye
Plantation, as well as Graham Farms to set the base for a practical, predictable, and profitable cow herd.
After each Irvington Farms’ Sale that I have been involved with, Mr. Billy always said we appreciate what you do for us. I will always
remember and appreciate those kind words. Chris Throne, Mr. Billy’s grandson, has done an amazing job in continuing in the mold
cast by Mr. Billy.
I hope you will be with us for this historic event on September 2, 2006 because I know you will like what you find at
Irvington Farms. If I may assist you in any manner, please contact me.
Sincerely,
Jarvene Shackelford
