SHODAIR CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL
Welcome
From the Administrator
If you've been tracking the news
of this year's legislature, you know it was a
tumultuous session. Shodair follows the legislative
session closely, because there are often measures
being considered that could affect the
hospital's operations.
This year there were several important pieces
of legislation for us to track, including House Bill
278, which was introduced at our request. This bill
removed a sunset provision on funding for our
medical genetics program. Representative Ron
Stoker (HD 87-Darby) sponsored the bill in the
House and Senator Trudi Schmidt (SD 11-Great
Falls) carried the bill in the Senate. We were pleased
to see it receive broad support in both houses.
Senate Bill 118, the hospital bed tax, was sponsored
by Senator John Cobb (SD 9-Augusta) and passed
after a two-year sunset was placed on the bill at the
insistence of the House Republican leadership.
Another bill we followed closely was SB 162, the
mandatory newborn screening bill, also sponsored
by Senator Trudi Schmidt of Great Falls. This bill
also received broad support in both houses.
We also followed the progress of House Joint
Resolution 47—a joint resolution of the Senate
and the House of Representatives of the State of
Montana requesting that an interim committee study
the funding, expenditures, and effectiveness of
Montana's Statewide Genetics Program. It was
sponsored by Representative Julie French (HD 36-
Scobey) at the request of the House Human Service
Standing Committee. At press time, this resolution
had not reached the final list for interim study.
Administrator
As you know, the session did not conclude on
April 27th. However, we would like to thank the
legislators who worked so hard on behalf of
measures important to Shodair. We would also
like to thank Joan Miles, Director of the
Department of Public Health and Human
Services, and her staff, Jane Smilie, Jo Ann
Dotson, and Sib Clack for their support. And,
of course, we extend our appreciation to all
legislators for their service to the citizens
of Montana.
With the arrival of spring, we look forward to
moving ahead with renewed spirit to carry on our
work of caring for Montana children and their
families. Spring brings change, and an important
change at Shodair is that Linda Coulston, our
Foundation Director, resigned last month to
pursue other interests. She and her husband
Lane are moving to Missoula. Linda is planning
to take a break from full-time work and get to
know her new community. The hospital will miss
her kind, cheerful personality, and wishes her
well in future endeavors.
Again, thanks to everyone for your support of
Shodair.
Sincerely,
John P. Casey

Montana sent a new representative
to the nation’s capitol in March, but the young
ambassador wasn’t a politician. Seventeen year-old
Nicole Winters of Missoula visited The White
House and Capitol Hill to share her story of triumph
over childhood abuse and related mental
health challenges.
Nicole, who was treated for depression
and post-traumatic stress disorder at
Shodair Children’s Hospital, is
Montana’s champion in this
year’s Children’s Miracle
Network Champions Across
America program, presented
by CO-OP Financial Services.
The program honors remarkable
children like her who have
triumphed despite severe medical
challenges.
Nicole is the only child to represent children’s
mental health issues. She joins more than 50 other
young ambassadors from other states and Canada,
Miracle Network hospitals throughout both
countries. She was introduced to the public at a
welcoming conference at Shodair on March 20th.
Following lunch at the hospital, she was
recognized by proclamation in both
houses of the state legislature. In
Washington D.C., she met President
Bush and her U.S. senators before
journeying to Orlando, Florida
and Walt Disney World, where
she and other champions were
honored in a series of events
during the first week in April.
Her experience at Shodair began
with admission to the hospital’s acute
psychiatric treatment unit in 2006. Patients
admitted to the acute care unit are in need of
immediate care and stabilization, often because
they are in danger of harming themselves or others.
Prior to her admission, she was in and out of foster
care until finally, her explosive behavior in a group
Montana’s Champion Nicole Winters...
home made it unsafe for her to remain there. She
was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder
(PSTD) and depression, and received intensive
psychotherapy to address her fears and selfdestructive
behaviors.
After getting the immediate care she needed,
Nicole transitioned into the hospital’s residential
treatment program, where staff helped her focus
on her behaviors and work on long-term recovery.
With the assistance of a dedicated staff that included
psychiatrists, nurses, therapists, teachers, and
recreation and art therapists, she acquired skills that
would help her return to life in a community and
family setting. She now lives with her foster mother,
Sandy Cummins, in Missoula, and attends high
school there. Describing her experience at Shodair,
Nicole said, “They helped me learn to hold the little
girl’s hand that’s hurting inside.”
Champions and their family members were treated to
a host of memorable activities over a week that
included tours of the nation’s capital and passes to
Walt Disney World theme parks. Country music star
Tracy Byrd accompanied the champions to
Washington D.C., and Miss America 2007, Lauren
Nelson, joined the champions in Florida. “What an
How Collaborative Problem
Solving has changed us
Laura Fuller, Ph.D.
Over the past several years
Shodair's Child & Adolescent
psychiatric services staff have
been working to implement
an approach called
Collaborative Problem
Solving, or CPS.
In January 2006 the
psychologist who developed
CPS, Ross Greene, Ph.D.,
visited the hospital. Dr.
Greene began consulting via
teleconference with staff of
the children's residential
treatment unit, and has since
provided consultation to the
adolescent residential units
as well. This installment on
CPS is intended to update
readers on the changes the
transition to CPS has
prompted thus far.
For more information on
CPS, please see the website of
the Center for Collaborative
Problem Solving:
www.ccps.info.
CPS
6
Shodair staff members always strive to provide highquality
care for children even under the most difficult circumstances.
Therefore, it may come as a bit of a surprise that something seemingly
as simple as the notion “children do well if they can” could change
so much about the work that is done here—causing clinical services to
become even better.
That notion is central to Dr. Ross Greene's Collaborative Problem Solving
(CPS) model. Through consultation with Dr. Greene and via Shodair's own
internal efforts at education, the basics of CPS have been implemented on
the hospital's psychiatric treatment units.
One primary aspect of CPS is getting to know what sorts of events or
situations seem to provoke a “meltdown” in the child. Another is
understanding the types of thinking skills children may be lacking and
need to be taught. CPS also encourages adults to be mindful about which
battles are worth having with kids, and advocates teaching problem
solving skills through what are called “Plan B Conversations.” These
conversations involve empathizing with the child, making sure the
concerns of the adult and the child are clearly identified, and then
inviting the child to engage in problem solving to generate a solution
that is mutually agreeable to both.
A big change in staff's approach to kids has been to listen and empathize
with them even more. Although listening and empathy have always been
important components of treatment at Shodair, CPS has pushed personnel
to work especially hard at getting to the bottom of a child's concern—
which involves listening carefully. Underlying this effort is the belief that
children probably have a good reason for doing what they do, and for
sometimes refusing adult requests.
In the past, the child might simply be labeled as “oppositional” or
“unmotivated,” and caregivers might look no further for the root of the
problem. Or they might assume the reason for the behavior was obvious
and identifiable without asking the child about it. Now, with CPS, staff
members are more likely to ask “What's up?” if a child won't comply with
a request, or if they melt down repeatedly in certain situations.
Staff members were initially surprised at how much they learned from their
conversations with patients. For example, when asked, children have
explained that they are refusing to go to bed because they are afraid of
bedtime due to a history of abuse; they won't wear socks because of the
way the seams on the toes feel; or they won't go to school because the
smell of the teacher's hand lotion makes them hungry. Once the real
problem is clarified, real work can be done to address it.
The basic tenet of CPS comes with a corollary: “Children do well if they
can… and if they don't, we adults need to help figure out how to help
them.” Shodair staff members have become very creative in devising ways
Reunion

to do just that. For example, an anxious child who refused school for the
last year due to intense fearfulness might initially be allowed to choose
his schedule for each day, while being assisted by his therapist and other
staff in managing anxious feelings. Or a child with expressive language
difficulties who cannot label her emotions may be given a set of “feelings
cards,” that she can point to as a way of communicating how she is
feeling. Likewise, a black-and-white thinker who melts down when things
don't go as he expects them to might use pictures of three items that are
large, medium, and small, to help him sort out which things are truly a
“big deal,” and which are not so significant. Finally, a girl who lacks
social skills and melts down when she is rejected by her peers might
need a “friendship coach” to work with her on phrases to use that will
make her a more appealing playmate.
Because CPS teaches adults to engage in problem-solving with kids,
rather than locking horns in power struggles, children begin to see adults
as sources of help and support. Instead of continuing to use the same
approach they have always used (an approach that often had poor
outcomes, but may have been the only one the child could think of),
children start to view adults as allies who can help them think of
different solutions.
For Shodair's young patients, this approach has resulted in an increase
in help-seeking behavior and a reduction in meltdowns. At a recent
meeting of the nursing staff, team members noted, “the kids just can't
get enough of us,” and some children don't want to leave because they
feel understood and cared for. Staff observed that, in a very positive way,
children were frequently seeking them out and wanting to talk more
than ever before.
When CPS is done well, it is likely to result in a significant reduction in
restrictive measures such as seclusions and restraints. This is because of
the emphasis placed on being proactive, rather than waiting until things
begin to “melt down,” and because of the collaborative relationship
created with children. At Shodair, a concentrated effort is being made to
reduce restrictive interventions, and to dissect any incident that does
happen in order to identify ways to prevent future occurrences.
The hospital is receiving recognition for its efforts in implementing CPS.
Dr. Greene has asked Shodair to contribute a chapter to a book he and
a colleague are writing about CPS in restrictive settings. There have also
been discussions about Shodair becoming identified as a CPS “Center
of Excellence.” This designation is official recognition that it does an
exceptional job utilizing CPS, and has sufficient expertise to provide
examples and training to other agencies in the region interested in
learning more.
The book The Explosive Child, written by Ross Greene & Stuart Ablon,
is a national bestseller, and the Center for Collaborative Problem Solving
receives hundreds of requests each year for consultation, information,
and speaking engagements. Collaborative Problem Solving is gaining
widespread popularity, and Shodair is on the cutting edge. The continuing
saga of CPS at Shodair is likely to be exciting. Stay tuned!
Kids.
Shodair's new acute treatment unit
is open and accepting patients who need critical,
sometimes life-saving psychiatric treatment. The 20-
bed facility accommodates patients who need
immediate psychiatric care to keep them safe.
Patients are admitted by referral from health care
providers, therapists, law enforcement and social
workers, as well as parents.
The term “acute care,” in a psychiatric hospital
setting like Shodair, refers to treatment offered to
children whose behavior puts them at risk of hurting
themselves or others. They often come from
medical-surgical
hospital emergency
rooms or law
enforcement agencies,
and are in urgent need
of immediate
psychiatric care
and stabilization.
In many cases, other
treatment programs
have been tried and
failed to meet the
child's needs.
The hospital, which provides acute and residential
psychiatric treatment exclusively for Montana
children and adolescents, began construction on a
20,000 square foot addition in 2005. The expansion
came in response to the increasing need for child
psychiatric services in the state. Previously, the
hospital found itself having to turn away young
patients because of a lack of beds to accommodate
them. The new addition includes the new 20-bed
acute care unit, a swimming pool for patient
recreation therapy, and additional office, meeting,
and storage space. An enclosed outdoor play area
for acute unit patients is also part of the new facility.
The new facility is state-of-the-art, and incorporates
several design suggestions from staff, who were
involved in early discussions with the project
architects. For example, the layout of the acute care
unit affords unobstructed views of the entrances to
all patient rooms, in any direction, from the centrally
located nurses' station. This allows nurses and staff
8
New Acute Care Unit treats Montana youth
with serious mental health challenges
The new unit’s milieu is spacious and bright
at the station to more effectively monitor patients'
activities and ensure their safety. Other features
include a spacious and community room, an
abundance of natural light, and views of the valley
and surrounding mountains. All patient rooms are
single-occupancy and spacious enough to
accommodate visits with family members.
At their 110th annual meeting in October of 2006,
Shodair trustees dedicated the $3.9 million addition
to the late James H. Foley, a tireless supporter of the
hospital who served 19 years as president of its
board of trustees.
The hospital
welcomed the public
to tour the new
facility and acute
psychiatric care unit
at an open house in
November. The first
patients were
accepted at the end
of the month.
Since then, the
number of patients
admitted for acute care
has remained steady, and the unit is often close to
capacity. Because Shodair offers both acute and
residential treatment—the only facility of its kind
in the state—patients who would benefit from
additional treatment may transition to one of the
hospital's three residential treatment units following
a short-term stay at the acute care unit.
Shodair is a key provider of children's mental health
services in the state, providing early intervention and
diagnosis, and working with family, guardians, and
other agencies to promote patients' well-being. It
is the only facility in the state offering acute care in
tandem with residential treatment. Being able to offer
this continuum of care—where a patient can move
from an intensive, acute treatment program to a
residential one—makes Shodair a unique asset for
youth suffering from various mental health
conditions. The non-profit hospital provides care
for children and adolescents from communities
throughout Montana, regardless of ability to pay.
Genetics program grows
with Montana
Katherine Berry, MS, CGC
Board Certified Genetic Counselor
Each year, staff at Shodair’s
Medical Genetics Department sees hundreds of
families who have genetic questions. Many are seen
outside the hospital's home base of Helena. In fact,
a team of two medical geneticists and three genetic
counselors spend an average of 15 staff days a
month traveling to communities around the state
of Montana. Fortunately for Montana's rural
population, this in-state program offers diverse
and robust genetic services—close to home.
From its inception forty years ago, Shodair's
medical genetics program has grown from services
at a single location to become a comprehensive,
statewide genetics program that provides clinical
services and collaborates with its own cytogenetic,
molecular, and maternal serum screening
laboratories. A complete range of services are
readily accessible to families and providers, and
designed to match their needs.
Dr. Phil Pallister began the medical genetics
program in the late 1960's and early 1970's at
the Boulder River School and Hospital. While
evaluations were focused on determining the cause
of developmental disability in individuals there, the
work frequently extended to family members.
Dr. John Opitz, a prominent medical geneticist in
Wisconsin, often traveled to Montana to assist with
evaluations. When Dr. Pallister retired in the late
70's, the program was moved to Shodair under
the direction of Dr. Opitz. State, federal, and
Shodair foundation funds helped sustain and
expand the program to better serve all Montanans
over the years.
In the 1980's, the first genetic counselor, Joan
FitzGerald, joined the staff. Sensing a need for faceto-face
genetic services in Billings, Great Falls, and
Missoula, she developed clinics there. Over the next
decade, another medical geneticist and two more
genetic counselors brought the clinical staff to five.
This growth allowed the program to build regular
services in ten locations across the state.
Spring 2007
Annie Adams, a genetic
counselor who travels regularly to Billings
and beyond says, “I find it satisfying to travel to
the eastern part of the state when we hold clinics in
Miles City and Sidney. Families we see there may
not have access to the state's large medical centers.”
By traveling to them, she says, “We provide
improved availability of genetic services.”
Participation in genetics clinics in the south and
western portions of the state, served by genetic
counselor Cindy Hudson, has nearly doubled in the
last several years, as the population there expands.
Cindy reports, “We're seeing more and more
families from Missoula and the surrounding area,
along with increasing ethnic diversity that reflects
the variety of populations in the area.” She adds,
“Strong support from the state pediatric specialty
clinic and the Department of Public Health and
Human Services has been instrumental in the
ongoing success of the program.”
Telemedicine consults, where staff, patients, and
other providers interact via television, is a tool that
has become available in the last few years. Annie
says, “Even when we're not able to meet in person,
the telemedicine network throughout the state
allows patients to consult with us without traveling
for hours.”
Whether they are seen at the hospital in Helena,
in a satellite clinic, or via telemedicine technology,
“We try to reach all Montanans who need our
services,” says Katherine Berry, the third genetic
counselor at Shodair. The Medical Genetics
Department serves patients of all ages, and is the
only provider in the state to offer both clinical
and laboratory medical genetic services. For
more information, contact the department by
calling 406-444-7530.
Annual Shodair
telethon coming up
June 2nd!
The annual Shodair / Children's Miracle
Network telethon is fast approaching. The broadcast,
featured on CBS television affiliates around the state,
will air Saturday, June 2nd, starting at 11:00 a.m. and
ending at 1:00 a.m. Sunday morning.
The telethon has been a staple of Shodair
fundraising events for 23 years. The eleven hour
event is broadcast live from the hospital each year on
the first Saturday in June, and features segments from
the national Children’s Miracle Network Celebration.
The event brings people together from around the
state in an effort to show and tell the story of the
important work done at Shodair, and to introduce
some of the patients and families whose lives have
been changed as a result of it. It’s a labor of love for
a broad-ranging, caring group of people who work
tirelessly to build support and generate donations to
ensure those vital services remain available.
Television personalities from around the state come
to Helena to act as on-air hosts, and area service
groups and supporters volunteer their time on the
phone banks throughout the day. Children’s Miracle
Network corporate sponsors located in Montana also
take part, by volunteering or participating in check
presentations throughout the day. Helena businesses
donate food to feed the hungry army, and hospital
employees work overtime to ensure the event is
a success.
Volunteers answer phones in the last hour of the 2006 broadcast.
One host, well-known to the Montana broadcast
industry, is Dan Snyder, now of Kalispell. Dan has
been a host for Shodair since the telethon’s first
broadcast in 1984. Dan was honored for his work
and long-standing support by the Children’s Miracle
Network at its national gathering for Celebration in
2006. A long-time on-air favorite, Dan will again be
an anchor for this year’s event. Nicole Winters,
Montana’s 2007 Children’s Miracle Network
Champion Across America, will be on hand, along
with patients, families, and Shodair staff who will
share stories of challenges faced and triumphs won
over psychiatric and genetic conditions.
In addition to offering residents a chance to
support Montana’s only Children’s Miracle network
hospital, the telethon is an opportunity for Shodair
to recognize and thank its many supporters. Donors
large and small are recognized on air for their
important contributions. Shodair is a non-profit
hospital, and depends on the help of all of its
generous supporters—from Children's Miracle
Network sponsors to individuals who donate
what they can, when they can.
Tune in to your local CBS station on June 2nd, join
the fun, and support a truly worthwhile cause:
Helping young Montanans and their families by
providing vital psychiatric care and comprehensive
medical genetic services in state, and close to home.
State's top student athletes named to
play in the annual Soccer Classic
The Shodair Soccer Classic will kick off its eighth season this
summer in Helena. The event begins mid-week with activities for players,
and culminates with the men's and women's games on Saturday, July 28
at Nelson Stadium on the Carroll College campus in Helena.
The Classic features top student athletes from high schools all across the
state. Through a rigorous screening process, over 60 outstanding
young men and women are selected to play in the annual
competition. In addition to having been selected as All-State
and All-Conference high school players in Class AA or A, they
have demonstrated academic achievement, leadership, and
citizenship. The Classic also brings together a talented coaching
staff from around the state to guide the teams and assure toplevel
competition.
Players and coaches arrive at Carroll College on the 25th to
begin practices and a variety of other activities leading up to the
games. The high school players host aspiring young soccer allstars
in a free clinic for children ages 5 to 12 on Friday before the
tournament. The event is especially popular with area youth, with close to
100 young players typically participating.
The soccer classic is a benefit for Shodair Children's Hospital and the
important work it does for children and adolescents from communities
throughout the state. Shodair is a vital resource for young Montanans
with struggling mental health challenges, and the state's medical genetics
program. Last year, the hospital provided more than $4 million dollars in
uncompensated care for at-risk children and youth from around the state.
The hospital is proud to offer this opportunity for gifted youth to pair
athleticism with citizenship in an event where some of Montana's best
young athletes help some of its neediest children. Financial support
generated from events like the Soccer Classic and the Children's Miracle
Network Telethon help assure that critically-needed services remain
available for young Montanans in need of help.
A quilt to
warm hearts
Last year, the children at Shodair
began a tradition that captured the hearts of staff
and visitors, and won the support of community
groups. The Shodair Hope Quilt inspired hope in
those who viewed it, as well as in those whose
artistry helped create it.
The Hope Quilt was a colorful compilation of
the hopes and dreams of patients on the hospital's
psychiatric treatment units. The children were
asked to individually illustrate their ideas of hope
on eight inch squares that would collectively, as a
beautiful queen-sized quilt, represent the hopes
of all participants.
When they were done, in the spirit of hope
and generosity, the children chose to offer their
symbols of hope to someone else. As the prize in a
community-wide raffle, the quilt would generate
proceeds to support ongoing Shodair services,
while offering hope and warmth to the lucky
winner. Kiwanis members sold raffle tickets for
chances to win the prize, and the quilt was
presented to the lucky winner during the 2006
Shodair/Children's Miracle Network telethon
broadcast. The spirit of hope came full circle when
that generous winner donated the quilt back to the
hospital, saying simply, “It belongs here.”
This year, the children are undertaking the same
project of hope. The patchwork masterpiece will
depict 56 visions of miracles created by Shodair
patients. Education program director Margie
McNellis will assemble the individual creations to
create a colorful, inspiring queen-sized quilt. The
quilt will again be offered as the prize in a raffle to
raise money for the hospital and future patients.
Viewers of this year's telethon will see it featured
during the broadcast.
To learn more about the quilt, or to find out how
to purchase raffle tickets, contact the hospital
marketing and foundation office at 406-444-7548.
Big Sky Fit Kids program is back!
Big Sky Fit Kids is the youth component of
Shape Up Montana, and encourages youth teams
to increase their individual physical activity levels in
accumulated activity contests.
Participants receive an individual
mileage sheet to record personal
physical activity—every twelve minutes
of activity counts as one mile; every 60
minutes of physical activity counts as
five miles. Individual totals count
toward the outcome for the team.
All three residential treatment units
have teams in this year's program: The
east adolescent residential treatment
unit (AU East), the west adolescent unit
(AU West), and the children's unit
(CU). All three units will be competing
for the coveted Shodair Fitness Cup.
Last year, AU West won the Cup for the Big Sky Fit
Kids competition. Teams from each of the units have
won the Cup at least once—proving that physical
fitness spans all age groups.
Hospital staff members help patients record their
efforts on activity slips throughout the
day. Physical activity during their
recreation therapy groups is recorded
for them by recreation staff. It's a team
effort, with individual totals contributing
to a final score that reflects a combined
commitment to fitness.
Big Sky Fit Kids is one of three
overlapping fitness programs currently
underway at Shodair. Patients are also
involved in the President's Fitness
Challenge and the President's Active
Lifestyle programs, which allow them
to earn national awards for being
physically active. Winners of this year's
competition will be announced later this summer.
New program helps
families pay for care
Shodair Children's Hospital is offering a new tool to
help patients and their families pay for hospital services. ShoCare is a
financial assistance program designed to help pay for the self-pay
portions of bills for services. It's a sliding scale discount program based
on family size and income levels, using the most recently published
federal poverty guidelines. The program applies to both medical
genetics and psychiatric care services.
Shodair's Chief Financial Officer, Ron Wiens, originated discussion on
the program, and helped make it a reality. “Many of our patients and
their families have limited financial resources at the same time they
need critical care. We want to make our services available when
they're needed, and this program is a good way to do that,” he said.
Anyone owing a self-pay balance on their billing statement can be
considered for ShoCare, regardless of whether they have insurance.
Expenses covered by the program include all open self-pay balances
after available resources—including Medicaid, CHIPS, and third party
payers—are exhausted. Eligible expenses include hospital inpatient,
residential, and outpatient charges.
“We've already seen families take advantage of this program,” Wiens
said. “It helps them get care they need and lessens their worries about
paying for it.” He adds that patients with insurance or Medicare may
also apply, because ShoCare may help cover part or all of the cost of
their co-insurance or deductible.
To qualify for the program, patients or families must meet financial,
residency, and asset guidelines. Anyone interested must complete
an application form and provided financial information such as bank
statements, pay stubs, tax returns, and information about assets,
liabilities, and monthly expenses. The program is limited to medically
necessary services provided by Shodair Children's Hospital, and do
not include personal physician or other professional charges not
billed by Shodair.
Sharing the warmth: Quilts for kids
For a child admitted to one of
Shodair's psychiatric treatment units, little things
can mean a lot. And things that bring warmth
and comfort can be especially
important.
Fortunately for these children,
an assortment of generous
individuals and groups has taken
it upon themselves to provide
those two elements in the form of
hand-made blankets and quilts.
Each year, the hospital receives
bundles of warm, colorful
blankets and quilts from
kind-hearted crafters and donors.
The fruits of their artistry and
generosity go to patients admitted to Shodair's
psychiatric treatment units. The cozy coverings
do more than just adorn patients' beds: they are
symbols of warmth and caring that are often
carried to activities on the units and home when
the child leaves.
The generous people who make these quilts and
blankets do so for a number of reasons, but the
number one motivator is to make a child feel
good. Shodair would like to
thank these caring people who
contributed time, effort, and
materials for blankets and
quilts for kids in 2006.
SHODAIR
SPOTLIGHT
Chip
Hall
Each day a host of dedicated people make
important things happen at Shodair. Caring, compassionate staff care for
deeply troubled children and provide advanced medical genetic services
to patients of all ages. Others ensure that medical records are processed
appropriately, and financial business is conducted accurately and efficiently.
Still others are responsible for nutritious meals, clean rooms and work
areas, and safe, comfortable facilities.
Chip Hall is one of those people whose work, often behind the scenes,
ensures the hospital's continued ability to serve Montana residents. Chip is
a 26-year veteran employee who works with the rest of the hospital's
maintenance staff to keep facilities in top form.
His day starts early and ends late: Chip works from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
four days a week. He and the other maintenance crew members, Rick
Johnston and Mike Schmit, trade off working every third weekend, when
they are also on 24-hour call. Chief Maintenance Engineer Dave Bossell
supervises the crew.
Chip's long history with the hospital gives him valuable knowledge of its
facilities and history. He joined the Shodair team when he was in high
school. During his summers off, he cleaned the surgery rooms at Shodair's
Helena Avenue facility. (At that time, the hospital performed pediatric
surgeries.) He continued with housekeeping and maintenance duties after
high school, ultimately transitioning from maintenance at the old building to
having most of his responsibilities at the Colonial Drive facility.
“I Am” poems
patients in
Joe Thompson’s
middle school
classroom.
I am...
I see me scoring the winning shot
I am good at math and cooking
I wonder if I’m doing fractions
I hear something boiling
in the kitchen
I see food cooking
I want to be a math whiz and a cook
I am good at math and cooking
I pretend that I’m a math whiz
I feel happy when I cook
I touch a lot of fresh foods
I worry when I cook the food
too dark
I cry when I burn the food
I am good at math and cooking
I understand how to reduce fractions
I say, “I am a good cook”
I dream of being a math whiz
I try to cook the very best food
I hope to become famous
I am good at math and cooking
I am athletic and smart
I wonder why I like sports
I hear the cheering of the crowd
I want to be that person scoring
the winning shot
I am athletic and smart
I pretend not to care
I feel strong and athletic
I touch the stars
I worry about making fouls
I cry when I lose the game
I am athletic and smart
I understand if we lose the game
I say, “Good game”
I dream of being a professional
basketball player
I try to practice good sportsmanship
I hope we win the game
I am athletic and smart
Shodair staff
makes a difference
Chip says he likes his job. “It's something different
every day. I like the people that work here… There are
a lot of good people here,” he adds. Chip and the
maintenance crew perform a wide range of duties to
ensure that patients, staff, and families have a safe,
functional environment in which to receive and provide
services. From shoveling walks and salting driveways,
to remodeling and repairs, setting up conference rooms
for meetings, moving equipment and furniture,
landscaping, or ensuring that the mail is picked up, the
crew completes tasks that are critical to the hospital's
daily operation.
“They keep the doors open,” says Renee Hofeldt,
Shodair's Marketing and Community Relations Director,
of Chip and his co-workers. “Without them, we wouldn't
be here, able to provide the services we do.”
Chip will be on hand to help with this year's
Shodair/Children's Miracle Network Telethon, assisting
with the set, phone bank, and general troubleshooting
for the day—in addition to his regular responsibilities as
the maintenance staffer on duty for the weekend.
For Chip, who's known for his quiet smile and
unassuming manner, it's simply all in a day's work.
I am a girl that’s almost twelve
I wonder what my birthday
is going to be like
I hear my friends singing the
birthday song
I see twelve candles on my cake
I want lots of presents
I am a girl that’s almost twelve
I pretend I am old now
I feel like I’m still young
I touch my birthday cake
I worry about my mom
I cry when I miss my mom
I am a girl that’s almost twelve
I understand my birthday is soon
I say, “Go for it”
I dream of going on vacation
I try to remember to brush my teeth
I hope I get presents from my mom
I am a girl that’s almost twelve
Spring 2007
I am smart and funny
I wonder if I’ll be a wildlife photographer
I hear “Parsel Tongue”
I see a Basilisk
I want a sword
I am athletic and hyper
I pretend to play “Star Wars”
I feel good about dragons
I touch a dragon
I worry about my family
I cried about my uncle
I am imaginative and weird
I understand that my uncle
is watching over me
I say that dragons are real
I dream about being a
professional football player
I try to get better at playing basketball
I hope to be the first one in my
family to graduate college
I am fast and a good artist
