Highlights of the speech of MD at Annual Conference
v What was
just a dream
when we had
our first annual
conference is
now a reality
and we have
surpassed our
best
expectations.
v This is the best ever year in the
history of Siemens for which the entire
team deserves applause.
v While this is indeed a moment of
rejoicing it is also a moment of
reflection.
v You can see our history through all
the logos that represent our thought
process over the years and guides us
to our future actions that must lead
us to greater heights.
v We must not take it easy but
continue to lead and that can only
come about if we use our values to
sustain our success.
v As you can see there are more values
within this one value and the most
important I think is discipline.
v Without discipline companies no
matter how successful are destined to
fail. We must instill discipline in our
lives and that means following the
rules and respecting procedures.
v Every rule and every procedure is
the result of a well thought out
exercise where value addition and
maximizing of processes is intended
and those that do not follow rules and
discard procedures are undermining
the very foundations of our success.
v Only by following the law and
conducting our business on ethical
lines can we hope to sustain success
otherwise it will flounder on our
misdeeds.
v There are really no short cuts to
sustainable success. It is a path littered
with challenges and only by facing
these challenges squarely and
thrashing the daylights out of
problems that you can hope to
maintain your present success on
permanent footing.
v You are a company that is backed by
a global network of innovation and
that is the third value that drives our
sustainable success.
v You are so fortunate to belong to a
company where the solutions you
offer are limited only by your
imagination.
v Siemens is not just a company it is
practically a universe in itself and if
you really look at it closely you will
find that it is a company that is
mankind’s partner from the cradle to
the grave and even before that.
v I say this because a child will in most
probability be on an ultra sound
machine before it is born and again
on a Siemens machine that will
diagnose illness in the closing years
of his life.
v No other company in the world has
such impact on mankind and you are
part of that company which should
make you proud.
v I know that you are because in the
recent employee feedback survey the
highest rating recorded was pride in
the company.
v Let me draw your attention to the
concept of cross selling which is a vital
tool for our sustainable success.
v There is an African proverb that says
“When spider webs unite they can tie
up a lion.” This is so true for our
business.
v You cannot sustain success if you do
not build people.
v If you mismatch capabilities with
work you will not only ruin your
business but also the future of those
working under you.
v You must remember that you will
not always be around but the business
will be and success should not be
limited to your own tenure but should
sustain well beyond that.
v There is something about which I
have to say something every time. This
is customer focus and the fact that
our salaries and our success depends
upon the satisfaction of our customers
v Our service and attention to
customers not only increases our own
sale but also gives a big boost to cross
selling efforts as satisfied customers
go looking for Siemens products in
every area of their business.
v I wish you the same success each
year which is what sustainable success
is all about.
figure in the social circles of the country
popularity in the business circles as well.
Pakistan German Business Forum was
with the active support and co-operation
of German Ambassador to Pakistan who
is also the Patron-in-Chief of the forum.
Siemens Water Technologies recently
teamed up with its sister company
Siemens Pakistan to provide Packages
Limited with a second wastewater
treatment system for its new Bulleh Shah
Paper Mill Project in Kasur, Pakistan. The
orders consist of two circular primary
clarifiers and two secondary clarifiers,
as well as floating surface aerators and
spray coolers for the paper company’s
biological wastewater treatment facility.
Siemens Pakistan will provide service
and maintenance.
One of Pakistan's leading manufacturers
of high-quality paper, paperboard, and
packaging products for the consumer
industry, Packages Limited developed a
new straw-based pulping technology
with which it hopes to promote greater
environmental sustainability in woodstrapped
countries. The new paper
factory is located in Kasur, about 70 km
from Packages Limited’s existing plant
in Lahore. The company expects the
Bulleh Shah Paper Mill Project to also
help improve its operating efficiency,
product quality and overall
environmental performance.
Siemens to Support Bulleh Shah Paper
Mill Factory with Wastewater Technology
Part of the key to the plant’s success: its
biological wastewater treatment systems.
The 32-m High-Performance Rim-
Flo®/Tow-Bro® secondary clarifiers, for
instance, saved significant civil and
concrete costs when compared with
conventional clarifiers. Similarly, the
Aqua-Lator® floating spray coolers served
as an economic alternative to cooling
towers, increasing heat transfer and
lowering the temperature of the
wastewater prior to secondary treatment.
Mr. Baljinder Sandhu, Project Director at
Packages Limited adds that his company
liked dealing with a single supplier. “It
was nice to have one point of contact
instead of several,” he says. “It was also
nice that Siemens could offer field service
through its local offices for inspection of
installation and maintenance training of
our personnel. This minimized our cost
and offered peace of mind.”
Packages Limited anticipates its entire
biological wastewater treatment facility
will be up and running by July 2006.
Jaakko Pöyry NLK Inc. of Vancouver,
Canada served as consultant for this
project.
Renewable Energy From Siemens
Siemens receives major order for wind
turbines from Canada 2007 wind orders
from North America worth more than
USD1.1 billion.
Siemens Power Generation (PG) will
supply 86 wind turbines with a capacity
of 2.3 megawatts (MW) each for the
Wolfe Island Wind project, which is located
near Kingston in Eastern Ontario, Canada.
The purchaser is a subsidiary of Canadian
Hydro Developers Inc., a company that is
exclusively investing in renewable energy
projects in Canada. With an installed
capacity of nearly 200 MW, the wind
project will have the potential to provide
clean power to nearly 75,000 households.
The wind farm is scheduled to be
operational in fall 2008.
So far this calendar year, Siemens has
secured wind turbine orders totaling
more than 750 MW in North America.
The combined value of these orders
exceeds USD1.1 billion (EUR770 million).
Prior to the new order from Canada,
Siemens had received five major U.S.
wind orders with a total capacity of more
than 550 MW in 2007. Customers
include RES, Babcock and Brown, AES
Corporation and Mid American Energy.
Further project negotiations in the U.S
and Canada are expected to be
completed shortly, adding to the order
backlog.
Since Siemens entered the wind market
just three years ago, the company has
become the second largest wind turbine
supplier to the U.S. market. The Siemens
wind business is one of the leading
suppliers of wind turbines in the industry
with more than 3,300 employees
Celebration of 25 Years of Power Transformer
Manufacturing in Pakistan
industrial complex provided an ideal
setting for this event. The guests included
a cross section of society including
diplomats, businessmen, media, high
government officials and elite of the
country.
Upon arrival the chief guest was warmly
welcomed by the workers who broke into
applause as his motorcade reached the
new factory. He than proceeded to raise
the curtain on the inauguration plaque.
The chief guest than visited the new
factory and inspected the pictorial display
of the history of transformer
manufacturing in Pakistan by Siemens.
After formal inauguration the chief guest
accompanied by Dr. Wucherer and top
management of Siemens reached the
venue for formal presentations and
speeches.
This portion of the event started with a
presentation on the new facility by Mr.
Ishtiaq Ul Haq Div.Director Transformers
followed by award of certificates to
Siemens
employees and
outside consultants
who had significantly
contributed towards the
completion of this mega facility
of the region.
The Governor of Sindh Dr. Ishrat Ul Ebad
speaking on the occasion welcomed Dr.
Wucherer and said that His presence here
shows the confidence of foreign investors
in this country and in this province.
Referring to the Siemens calendar the
governor said that Karachi is now a mega
city and this position has also been
portrayed in your international calendar
where Karachi features with top countries
of the world like New York, London, Hong
Kong and Karachi.
The Governor termed it an important day
for Siemens, for Karachi and the province
of Sindh. He said that Siemens that has
been here since the inception of Pakistan
and thus knows this country like the back
of its hand has by the establishment of
this new factory with substantial
investment decided that a climate exists
for safe and profitable investment. He
congratulated Siemens on their right
decision and on the timely completion of
this project that represents direct foreign
investment resulting in employment and
earning of foreign exchange for the
country by export of these transformers.
Professor Dr. Klaus Wucherer addressing
this important gathering said that the
presence of Governor of Sindh in this
ceremony shows his interest and support
for companies that are willing to invest
and enlarge their stake in Pakistan. He
said that it is very rare that the same
person that laid the foundation stone also
inaugurates the same project but in this
case we are very fortunate that His
Excellency the
governor of Sindh who laid
the foundation stone also
performed the inauguration.
This represents stability and continuity
that are so vital for economic progress of
any country. Dr.Wucherer said that
Siemens has been an equal partner in the
progress of Pakistan which is borne out
by the fact that today we are also
celebrating 25 years of Power Transformer
Manufacturing by Siemens Pakistan. This
demonstrates the tremendous
contribution of the company towards
transfer of technology for local production
of vitally needed components to enhance
the infrastructure of the country.
Dr.Wucherer pointed out that Siemens is
already a major exporter of Engineering
goods and services from Pakistan and this
new facility is expected to enhance
Siemens capabilities for exports.
Mr. Sohail Wajahat H. Siddiqui in his
address of welcome offered thanks to the
Governor Sindh who despite his very busy
schedule accepted the invitation to be the
chief guest at this very important occasion
and as the MD put it “this demonstrates
his commitment to encourage foreign
investment in Pakistan and in the province
of Sindh.” Mr. Sohail Wajahat said that
the importance of this occasion can also
be measured by the fact that today we
have with us a very important figure from
Siemens A.G. Dr. Klaus Wucherer Member
of the Corporate Executive Committee
and Member of the Managing Board of
Siemens A.G. and head of Asia Pacific
including Australia. We welcome
Dr.Wucherer whose presence together
with that of the Governor Sindh has
greatly enhanced the importance and
prestige of this occasion.
Mr.Sohail Wajahat said that this project
reflects Siemens confidence in the
economic environment of Pakistan and
our trust in the policies being pursued
by the present government. He said that
only recently we have also acquired CTI
in Islamabad which represents another
significant investment by our company
in Pakistan and confidence in the
economic policies of the government.
After formal speeches a plaque specially
commissioned to mark the occasion was
presented to the governor by
Dr.Wucherer while the governor
presented a similar plaque to
Dr.Wucherer.
Annual Conference 2007
Annual Dinner and Awards Ceremony
Siemens Pakistan annual conference
2007was held on 23rd and 24th
November 2007 at Karachi Sheraton
hotel. The theme of the conference
was “Values for sustainable success”.
The phenomenal growth in the
company was reflected in the number
of participants. Eight years ago we
started with a group of less than fifty
people which has now reached a total
of nearly 200 enthusiastic and
motivated delegates. This is inspite
of the fact that selection for
participation is based on very strict
criteria making it a privilege to be
invited to this premier event of the
year. The conference started with the
unveiling of the logo. This was
accomplished through a highly
motivating film that visualized the
values mentioned in the logo of the
conference and then ended with the
logo flashing on the screen. This
charged the audience and they broke
into spontaneous applause that
resonated around the hall.
After the unveiling of the logo Mr.
Gerhard Wilcke gave a presentation on
“values for sustainable success”. This
was followed by the address of the
Managing Director Mr.Sohail Wajahat
H.Siddiqui (Full text on page 43). After
the speech of the MD delegates visited
the swimming pool of the hotel for a
group photograph and came back to
the conference room to witness the
MD and executive directors cut the
cake with the conference logo.
A very interesting workshop based
on the theme of the conference was
conducted by M/S Navitus. This was
divided in two parts. The first part
focused on values and what part
they play and the second session
allowed the delegates to understand
how values can lead to sustainable
success. This brought the working
session of day one to a close. The
same night delegates came back to
the hotel to participate in the
glittering gala dinner and awards
night which is better known as a
night of celebrating excellence.
On the second day the first session
was devoted to presentations. The
first one was from Mr. Sarwar Khan
who gave a presentation on “PTCL
Go live success story” This was
followed by “ Values based success
in IIP” presented by Mr. Aijaz Saleem,
“Values based success in PTD”
presented by Mr. Mohammad Ilyas,
“Value based success in A & D “ by
Mr. Nadeem Kazmi and “Values
based success in MOTAC” by Mr. Syed
Asadullah.
After tea on the second day there
was a workshop on “Success story
Dubai, - a regional success” by
Mr.Irfan Umar and Mr.Kamal Majid.
Mr. Sohail Wajahat H. Siddiqui, Mr. Gerhard Wilcke,
Mr. Nasim Siddiqui, Mr. Mohammad Ilyas and Mr.
Nadeem Kazmi cutting the cake jointly at the annual
conference to demonstrate team spirit within
Siemens.
The Annual Dinner
Ceremony were held
in the magnificent
ball room of Karachi
Sheraton hotel.
Attended by all the
delegates of the
annual conference
and invited guests
that included
businessmen,
academia, journalists and elite of the city.
This was a dazzling evening celebrating
excellence. The chief guest of the evening
was Mr. Shahid Ahmad, Additional
Pakistan, who had flown in especially to
be a part of this important event. The
hall was buzzing with expectation as
company employees waited for the
announcement of Internal Awards
including the top+ awards which are
considered the Oscars in Siemens.
Mr. Shahid Ahmad in his key-note address
informed the audience of the turnaround
achieved by the Government in the
education sector and the number of
students of the country. A career Civil
Servant, Mr. Shahid
Ahmad impressed
the audience with
the results he had
achieved during his
brief stint in the
education sector. He
also lauded Siemens for awarding gold
medals to engineering students from
across the country and for also
recognizing the achievement of Siemens
employees. He said Siemens
has set an example for the
entire corporate sector in
Pakistan.
He congratulated all those
receiving awards and the
young engineering students
receiving gold medals.
Mr. Sohail Wajahat H.
Siddiqui, MD and CEO,
Siemens Pakistan speaking
on the occasion
congratulated the gold
medal winners and their
parents and said these
students are the future of
our country. He said these
gold medals are in line with
the global policy of Siemens
reflected in the Siemens
Generation 21 global
education program.
Siemens employees and gold medals to
the top engineering students from across
the country.
The last session was devoted to
considering recommendations from
the two workshops and outlining a
line of action to implement
recommendations unanimously
agreed upon by the delegates.
The chief guest than gave
away the internal awards to
After two days of hard deliberations,
moments of motivation and
unparalleled enthusiasm the annual
conference came to a close.
Everyone was greatly appreciative
The delegates to the annual conference got together at the Royal
Rodale club the evening before the annual conference. This is a
well known club in an upbeat area of Karachi near the famous
Clifton beach and has a lot of amenities.
The more than 175 delegates had a good hour of bowling at the
attractive and spacious bowling lanes of the club before retiring
to the lounge for drinks, snacks and interaction. The auditorium
of the club in the meantime was readied for a light hearted skit
full of satire on society and in the end carrying the vital message
of cross selling.
This is a company concept about selling across business units
and was very well presented by Khalid Anum and his team.
After the play the delegates arrived at the impressive dining
facilities of the club to be treated to a warm and sumptuous
dinner. Later the delegates departed fully charged and motivated
to start the conference with vitality and vigor.
A Delightful Surprise
Expressive Hands
Some people are so expressive! We caught a few on camera
and because eavesdropping is not polite we can only
speculate what these hand gestures conveyed.
That is the way process should work
Our Managing Director due to his outstanding
contribution in several fields and his efforts to attract
foreign investment to Pakistan was honored by the
Government of Pakistan and was bestowed the Sitarae-Imtiaz
on March 23rd 2007.
It is all up to him
So what?
You can count on me
This being the first annual conference since that historic day
in March the delegates decided to surprise the MD with a
present that literally had their heart and soul poured into it.
A portrait of the MD made up of tiny pictures of all the
delegates.
First there was the announcement of this achievement by Mr.
Zia Ul Islam Zuberi and the entire conference room burst into
applause as all delegates stood up to honor this singular
achievement. The MD was then asked to proceed slowly
towards the picture that was till then veiled in a black cover
with a bright red ribbon. The cover was removed and the MD
first saw his portrait and then as he reached closer he realized
that this picture represented a unique tribute by the delegates
and it was plain to see that he could hardly conceal his
emotions at this unexpected and heartfelt offering of the
delegates. A cake with felicitations on his achievement was
later rolled out and cut by him accompanied by all the
delegates.
What is cooking?
Now listen carefully
Can you stop fiddling with your mobile
This is really delicious
Your D.G. sets are doing well
This has been a great year
Now hold on
Now let us get this clear
I can explain it all
Views
During the annual conference the views of
the delegates were recorded on camera to
register their impressions of the conference
and to solicit suggestions from them for the
next conference. Everyone participated
enthusiastically in this exercise and recorded
their impressions with zeal and vigor.
Siemens best
company for
leaders…
another success
CEO Magazine recently named
Siemens one of the best companies
for leaders. "Leadership
development has always been
important. Today it has become a
competitive differentiator. Those
that do it well will win more often
than not. Those that do it poorly or
not at all will lose." It was the first
time Siemens appeared on the list
and ranked number 6.
Pakistan is facing one of the worst energy crises
of its history. The gap between energy demand
and supply has grown sharply over the last few
years making life harder for the masses according
to newspaper reports.
The unprecedented urban growth a mega trend
that is taking place in developing countries
reflects the hopes and aspirations of millions of
new urbanites. Cities have enormous potential
for improving people’s lives. One of these major
cities is Lahore. With a rich cultural heritage in
its background, Lahore is counted as one of the
historical cities of the world. Like most of the
other urban cities of Pakistan, Lahore too is facing
a severe energy crisis.
New Diesel Power Stations prove to be a better
alternative for meeting this energy crisis for more
than a single reason. They are highly efficient
and can be installed and run in a very short
period of time. Hence they are better suited to
cope with severe power outages in a developing
country as ours.
Sidicon - A
Specialized Control
System for Diesel
Power Plants
The Distributed control of
this Project is based on
SIDICON- a specialized
Control System, state of
the art visualization and
up-to-date software for
the Diesel Power Plants
that provides high
performance and greater
system reliability. Its open
architecture allows easy
implementation of new
stipulations. Through
this project, BU-CIP is
aiming for setting up a
standard for the future
projects of MAN Diesel.
Award Criteria for
BU-CIP
Winning of this
prestigious contract was
not an easy task for the
Business Unit (CIP).
Members of the project
bidding team went
through an immensely
tough competition with
its competitors. Through
its vast project
m a n a g e m e n t
experience, excellence,
in-depth expertise,
negotiation skills, and
most-of-all determination
to be a part of the efforts
in adding up the
megawatts required into
the country, BU-CIP won
the contract.
Members of CIS Siemens Germany &
Siemens Pakistan meet to celebrate the
MAN Diesel SE
successful award of Atlas Project.
based in
Germany and the Pakistani Atlas Group have
concluded a strategic partnership to construct
Diesel Power Plants in Pakistan. The cooperation
covers the development, design,
construction and maintenance
of four turnkey Diesel Power
Plants from 120 to 225 MW in
size, to be completed by 2012.
One of these projects that has
recently gone into execution is
In Germany: Team members of MAN Dieselthe
Atlas Power Project - 225 Germany & Siemens-Pakistan
MW Diesel Power Station in
Lahore, to be situated at Lahore-Sheikhupura
Road. The plant is scheduled to connect to the
public grid in March 2009. Business Unit - Cross
Industry Projects (formerly known as BU-Process
Industries and Water Technologies) has made
strategic inroads in the Diesel Power Sector and
has been awarded a contract for the complete
electrical and control system of the Atlas Power
Plant Project.
Biggest ever Export Order of the IIP
Division
The Atlas Power Project is one of the projects
of its kind since the “Independent Power
Producers” (IPPS) have recently started
investing in diesel power plants in Pakistan.
Moreover, the Atlas Power Plant Project is
also the biggest ever export order of IIP
Division. Another fact that needs to be
mentioned here is that MAN Diesel, world’s
leading provider of large-bore diesel engines
for marine and power plant applications, is
working with Siemens Pakistan for the very
first time. Thus, it won’t be incorrect to say
that this project is a milestone not only in
the history of the BU-CIP itself but also in the
history of Siemens Pakistan. Being a part of
this prestigious project is a source of great
honor, pride and achievement, both for the
Business Unit – Cross Industry Projects and
for Siemens Pakistan at large.
Apprenticeship centre renovated
The apprenticeship centre at Siemens
Industrial Complex SITE was recently
totally renovated by Shared Services.
Apprenticeship Training Ordinance
was promulgated in Pakistan in 1958.
Siemens Pakistan was the first
Company to implement action on this
Ordinance. The revised Ordinance with
rules and regulations of training was
promulgated in 1962. Siemens
Pakistan inducts students after Grade
10 with science back ground for a
three years theoretical and practical
course and these students serve as a
recruiting ground for skilled
manpower in Pakistan and the region.
Such skilled manpower of this caliber
is not available in the market. Since
its inception this has been a much
sought after training course among
young men looking for a career in the
technical arena.
How competent are these young
people can be gauged from the fact
that out of the total workers at
Siemens Industrial Complex in Karachi
60% are ex-apprentices trained at our
ATC. The remaining have been
inducted by the industry. It has been
ascertained that these apprentices
belong to poor families who would
not have afforded their education
beyond 10th Grade and they would
have succumbed to usual bad
influence in the society or would have
been wasted away in petty jobs.
The renovated centre was inaugurated
by the CFO Mr. Gerhard Wilcke in a
simple ceremony.
Press Clippings
During the visit of Dr.Wucherer to the head office Mr.Zia
Ul Islam Zuberi Director CC presented him with a copy
of a collection of press clippings regarding Siemens
activities, awards and achievements that appeared in
the local press. Dr. Wucherer closely scrutinized the
clippings and appreciated the efforts of CC in
maintaining such a high profile of the company.
BU TS “Leader In Performance”
BU TS Pakistan won the award for "Leader in Performance" in the TS Asia
History of Modern Day
Diesel Generating Sets
The modern day diesel generators used
primarily in Industrial Complexes as well
as in residential buildings owes its roots
chiefly to two inventors. One of them is
the creator of the first dynamo Michael
Faraday and the other is the inventor of
the diesel engine Rudolph Diesel.
Michael Faraday (September 22, 1791 –
August 25, 1867) was born in Newington
Butts, near present-day South London,
England. It was his discovery of
electromagnetic induction in the year
1831 that led to the invention of modern
day generators. He used what he termed
his induction ring to discover the
electromagnetic induction. This was the
induction of electricity in a wire by the
use of the electromagnetic effect of the
current in another wire. This was the first
transformer and followed closely with
the discovery of magneto-electric
induction process which is the production
of Steady Electric Current.
He attached two pieces of wire
by the use of a sliding contact
to a copper disc. He rotated the
disc through the poles of a
magnet and was able to
generate continuous direct
current. This was the first
dynamo that supported the then
highly popular DC Power system.
His discovery led Sebastian Pietro
Innocenzo Adhemar Ziani de
Ferranti (April 9, 1864 - January 13,
1930) into developing an Alternator that
supported AC System in 1882.
On the other hand, the Diesel Engine
was developed by Rudolf Christian Karl
Diesel (March 18, 1858 – September 30,
1913) a German inventor and mechanical
engineer. In 1892 Karl Diesel put out a
patent that dealt with the method and
design of an engine where combustion
would take place in the cylinder.
He continued to work towards his goal
and finally was successful in the
production of a diesel engine that
produced an over all efficiency of 75%.
It is the coupling of his diesel engine with
the Ferranti Alternator that led to the
invention of modern day diesel generator.
Can you break free
by: Babar Baig, MD Secretariat
As I was passing the elephants, I suddenly
stopped, confused by the fact that these
huge creatures were being held by only a
small rope tied to their front leg. No chains,
no cages. It was obvious that the elephants
could, at anytime, break away from the
ropes they were tied to but for some reason,
they did not.
I saw a trainer near by and asked why these
beautiful, magnificent animals just stood
there and made no attempt to get away.
"Well," he said, "when they are very young
and much smaller we use the same size
rope to tie them and, at that age, it's
enough to hold them. As they grow up,
they are conditioned to believe they cannot
break away. They believe the rope can still
hold them, so they never try to break free."
DHA:
Letter of intent has been received from DHA for their G-
extension project. The value is Rs. 45 Million.
Sunder Industrial Estate:
An order for Rs. 138.9 Mio Grid station has been obtained by
HSS. Based on our capabilities and customer trust we are
hopeful of also getting business for upcoming treatment plants.
Pak Arab Fertilizer:
An Order of Rs. 7.1 Million received by CIP. This is the first order
by Process automation in fertilizer sector.
I was amazed. These animals could at any
time break free from their bonds but
because they believed they couldn't, they
were stuck right where they were.
Like the elephants, how many of us go
through life hanging onto a belief that we
cannot do something, simply because we
failed at it once before?
Mobility Workshop
in the world
Disability is not inability...
The first complete mobility workshop in the world was inaugurated
at the premises of Disable welfare association in lines area Karachi.
The entire workshop has been donated by Siemens Pakistan. The
inauguration was the hallmark of events leading up to world
disability day and was attended by office bearers of the association
not only from Pakistan but around the world.
The workshop designs and alters vehicles so it is easier for people
with different abilities to use these vehicles. So far the association
used to have this work done outside which was not only costing
money but also delays for the recipients. With the installation
of all required machinery this can be done in-house. The
Canadian delegates expressed delight at this workshop saying
that such a facility was not available even in developed
countries.
Mr. Ghulam Nabi Nizamani, Vice President-Asia of Disabled
Peoples International speaking on the occasion paid rich
tributes to Siemens and said this workshop is unique
as such workshops are not available even in
developed countries and this marks a landmark
in assistance to the disabled in the country. He
said he was greatly impressed by the speed
at which this workshop was established as
it was only a few months ago that the
association had requested MD
Siemens for such a workshop.
Mr. Jawaid Rais, President, Disable Welfare Association thanked
Siemens for this generous gift which will help disabled people earn
an honest living and not be a burden on others. He said the
association believes in self help and wants the disabled to come
out and lead normal lives. He recounted various projects of the
association and said this workshop was our dream which has now
become a reality thanks to Siemens Pakistan.
Mr. Sohail Wajahat H.Siddiqui, Managing Director, Siemens
speaking on the occasion lauded the dignity of the physically
challenged who despite their handicap are struggling to earn
an honest living so as not to become a burden on society. He
said Siemens stands with them in their struggle and this
workshop is testimony of our commitment.
The workshop has been established to further boost the
Mobility - Self Respect Scheme which is a Project of DWA
and World Bank. It aims to bring a huge change in the
life of physically challenged persons. It not only enables
them to move independently but also brings them
a mean of earning respectable wages. The workshop
consists of latest machinery to repair/design and
alter vehicles to make them suitable for the
physically challenged. A stand by generator
has also been installed and a Suzuki will
also be provided by Siemens for
emergency duty.
Light for Life
Life in Sharda Maidan lights up
Their faces light up with smiles as children of village Sharda Maidan pose before one of the
solar panels that brought light to their lives.
Among the snow capped mountains in Azad Kashmir is the
village Sharda Maidan. Practically cut off from the world. The
travel time to village Sharda Maidan from Muzaffarabad (Capital
of Azad Kashmir) is 8 hours drive on Jeep-able road and 1 hour
hiking. The nearest telephone facility is in Tehsil Athmaquam,
which is at a distance of 4 hours drive from Tehsil Sharda. Close
by is the rural health centre and the mother and child centre. It
is a village of 40 families. The young and old in these families had
never enjoyed the facility of electricity that most of the world takes
for granted. Not until one fine day when the lights were switched
on in this remotest corner of Azad Kashmir. Siemens solar energy
project had brought light in the life of these people. A commodity
that they had never imagined they would posses and now the
young and old were expressing their delight at the magic of
light in this wilderness.
Speaking to a PTV (National Television) reporter a young man
recounted the irritation to his eyes with the burning of oil lamps
while he studied before this solar miracle happened in their
village. Now he says he can read books, say his prayers and
read the Quran in the bright light provided by bulbs running
on solar energy. The savings in wood and oil is an added benefit
that helps the poor people of this village. It is the same story in
the nearby rural health centre and mother and child centre. An
official of the centre talking to PTV said that now patients can be
treated twenty four hours a day and equipments like Nebulisers
can be used effectively.
Sharda Maidan is the first of such villages
to be powered by Solar.
This program will be extended to as many
more villages as the funds allow and Siemens will continue
its efforts to brighten the life of these people and give
them a ray of hope for the future.
After the disastrous earthquake in Northern Areas, we
received donation from Siemens companies, their
employees and from Siemens Germany to help the
earthquake victims.
A committee was formed to propose a project that would
best benefit the people of this devastated area. Many
suggestions were considered including providing generating
sets or kiosk sub stations but in the end it was decided that
for this program to be meaningful and long term and for it
not to become a burden on the local people we should install
Solar Energy for the villages. A typical village was selected
and the basis of that selection was that the village will not
have any electrical energy so far and in the near future there
is no possibility that it can get electrical energy from Utility.
The model village selected was Sharda Maidan. The village
has 40 families residing in it who have never enjoyed the
facility of electricity that most of the world takes for granted.
In addition to the village the rural health centre and the mother
and child centre have also been hooked up to solar power by
Siemens.
It was a Herculean task to transport the solar panels, batteries
and allied equipment to this remote outpost of Kashmir but
Dr. Suhail Qureshi of Siemens and his team worked hard to
complete the model project that will serve as the benchmark
for further such projects in the area. An interesting thing is
that since Dr. Qureshi is a qualified medical doctor he used
his visits for installation of the solar panels to also lend a
hand at the rural health centre endearing him to the local
population who now hold him and Siemens in great esteem.
An everlasting bond built between the company and the
people that will for ever light the lives of these simple village
people.
Dr. Suhail Qureshi and his team during installation.
Elders of the village proudly pose before the solar panel.
Siemens Pakistan had launched the “Light for Life” program
after the devastating earthquake in October 2005. Contributions
from Siemens companies in the region and the head office had
poured in under the umbrella of “Siemens Caring Hands”
program the Siemens global NGO for disaster relief. It was
decided to launch a sustainable and environment friendly
program that would bring light into the darkness that had
enveloped the lives of these unfortunate people after the quake.
Transporting batteries for the system to this remote area
was a Herculean task.
the system.
Siemens Family day in Lahore
Glimpses of Stall and Stage Show
Uptown LA is not a place you can easily
forget. The name itself reminds you of
hazy evenings in LA, skateboard
acrobatics, sailing, bowling and just lazing
around in the park. For the Siemens
families that spent a day at this miniature
LA in the heart of Lahore it was a day well
spent with lots of activities and fun.
Bowling here is a lot of fun because of
the spacious bowling alleys, colorfully
decorated with video music tapes playing
to encourage the players to do their best.
It was here that the “Bowling for success”
tournament was held. The tournament
itself witnessed tough competition and
players demonstrated a drive for success
which is now a hall mark of all Siemens
employees.
A lot of other activities also took place
arranged by the management of Uptown
LA. This included magic shows, jumping
castle, face painting, palmist and others.
The rooftop was reserved for Business
Unit stalls that put their hearts and souls
in making these stalls the chief attraction
of the day. For the guests getting up to
the roof top might have required some
effort but at the end of the climb it was
well worth the effort. From parrots telling
your fortune to chancing your arm for a
prize and of course getting that family
portrait you have been forgetting for a
while (brilliant idea by PTD) there was so
much to do and so many prizes to win
that everyone nearly forgot all the other
entertainment available on the three
floors of this entertainment centre.
After many hours of fun at the stalls and
in the bowling alley the guests arrived at
the spacious auditorium of the club to
watch a dazzling stage show with such
performers as Sahir Lodhi (Compere)
Jawad Ahmed and Ashia Khan and Saeed
Siki with his own brand of comedy.
Singing competitions, Siemens ka Neelam
Ghar and many more activities were
conducted by the versatile Sahir Lodhi
Special Report
Shared Services
When I narrated stories of phenomenal
growth of Siemens Pakistan during the
Advance Management Course, it sounded
fiction to most of the course participants
because it was too good to be true.
The fact of the matter is that this success
story has been scripted by a team of
dedicated professionals. We at Shared
Services feel that we have also chipped
in a little but significant way to that end.
This gave me an impetus to jot
down some contributions that
we have made in the last two
years or so.
Shared Services at a
glance:
Organized as a corporate
department we are entrusted
with multiple tasks. From Real
Estate to Security, from Facility
Management to Logistics, from
Insurance to House Keeping from
EPN to Industrial Relations,
Shared Services provides valuable
support to our Business
Units/Depts. We may not be the
front line Business Units
generating revenue for Siemens Pakistan
but we consider ourselves strategic
partners to these Business Units.
Civil Works:
One of the major responsibilities of Shared
Services Department is to build and
renovate the entire Siemens building
portfolio and to maintain it in a
professional way.
Projects successfully completed:
Some of the major projects undertaken
by us are as follows:
F BU TR Project:
By: Ameen Imtiaz, GM, Shared Services
Apart from us, only our friends in BU TR
know the importance and scope of this
project. This is the most dominating
structure in the entire SITE area, however,
the complexity of the project was much
more than what is apparently visible to
the observer.
The structure was designed to carry a 200
tons crane; it
i n c l u d e d
construction of the
biggest test field in
Siemens Pakistan,
shifting of ovens,
changes in the
existing PT hall,
installation of a
Vertical Winding
Machine ( 40 feet
belowground level)
but then this all
was done to give
Siemens Pakistan
the cutting edge of
producing 220 kVA
transformers.
Increase in scope
resulted in some delays towards the
completion of project.
& Siemens Learning Centre:
The newly commissioned Siemens
Learning Centre (SAP Academy) at Park
Towers Clifton is a trade mark project for
Shared Services. This aesthetically planned
and artistically built facility has everything
that makes it world class. Such is the
quality of the project that the company
holds different meetings, seminars and
other important events at this Learning
Centre rather than any 5-star hotel. SRE
Representative from Munich was also very
appreciative and termed it as a world
class facility.
I Beach Hut:
When we were tasked for the renovation
of the Beach Hut by the CFO, we
immediately understood his desire for a
befitting recreational facility for the
employees. We knew that it was a big
challenge . Not with standing the distance
for the city, we set ourselves a goal to
convert this into Siemens signature
facility. The new look beach hut was
inaugurated by CFO’s wife in a simple but
impressive ceremony. Ever since that day,
this hut is on advance booking of more
than 2 months.
C Building ‘D’ 2nd Floor:
With growing business we felt a need for
additional office space in B – 72.
Construction of an additional floor over
Building D was selected as an answer to
the need. With the help of internal
professional Project Management, a
13,000 sq.ft of office space which
included structure, HVAC, furnishing and
allied paraphernalia, was commissioned
in a record time of just 6 months with
considerable cost savings.
q Siemens Chowrangi:
With the desire to constantly
improve/innovate (which has been the
hallmark of our great company) we
thought of giving a more modern look to
the Siemens Chowrangi – something
which should go with our strong brand
image. We are very proud to report that
M/S Envicrete has included this as a model
in their marketing campaign.
B Up lift and renovation of
production areas:
In a joint effort with our partners in BU’s
/ Divisions, we are also engaged in
uplifting of the production areas. We
recently completed epoxy floorings of the
entire production area of BU SB. Both we
and BU SB are proud to report that the SB
factory is comparable to any factory in
the Siemens world. The same standard
will be achieved in all areas in a phased
program.
Development of Outside
parking:
With the expanding business, a need was
felt to utilize the parking area for
production and other allied activities.
Therefore, an aesthetically designed
parking area is being created along the
Estate Avenue.
This will accommodate around 150 cars.
C Uplift and renovation of
offices:
We remember a meeting nearly two years
ago that the MD held with us in which he
gave his vision of renovating and
refurbishing all our offices to international
standards. We embarked on a phased
program of uplifting all offices and
successfully completed the assigned task.
I also recall the pride with which he
narrated the nice comments that the then
KESC buyers made to the MD about the
high quality of our offices. We are
confident that the modern working
environment that our employees have
today helps them deliver better results for
the benefit of Siemens Pakistan.
Prayer Area:
Siemens prayer area at B – 72 was
tastefully refurbished.
Infrastructure Development
t Logistics Management:
This may sound a trivial function but
managing a fleet of 350 cars (after COM
carve out) and administration of a large
number of rental vehicles is a huge task
in itself. Such is the importance of this
area that both MD and CFO monitor its
performance personally. The young team
in our transport department works
tirelessly to achieve the desired results of
cost controlling in this area. Over the last
six months or so, a large sum of money
has been saved through a joint effort by
us and our friends in BUs / Departments.
MIS software for Logistics is under
development, through which we will be
able to provide better support & services
along with
· Cost Saving
· Effective management of Car Pool
· Records & reports.
4 Corporate Insurance:
Corporate Insurance Department deals
with diverse functions like:
· Procurement of Vehicles
· Lease Agreements for Real Estate
· Pre-qualification & Registration
· Corporate Insurance
Through intense negotiations substantial
rebate was obtained on account of
premium rates for different categories of
insurances. Benefits of which were passed
on to all BU’s/Deptt.
+ EPN and Power House:
The power house committee headed
by Mr. Ilyas envisaged the increasing
power required in the face of growth
of the company. We at Shared services
in co-ordination with and supported by
BU OLM, BU TR, BU SB and A&D chalked
out a comprehensive plan to enhance
the installed capacity of the Power
House from 3040KW to 4240 KW
through installation of 2 x 750 kVA
generating sets by our in source
partners at A&D Division.
Simultaneously an exercise was also
conducted to improve the entire
electrical network. During this up
gradation project additional
requirement of 1000kw for PTHE
(Power Trafo Hall Extension) was also
catered for. Now in the second phase
we are looking at ways and means to
reduce cost of Power House operations
through segregation of essential and
non essential load. Only the essential
load will be fed by Power House and
the rest will be fed through cheaper
(KESC) electricity. The estimated cost
saving through this exercise is around
Rs. 9 million annually.
This process includes installation of:
· 1.2 & 2.5 MVA Transformers in B-72
Sub Station & PTHE respectively
· 2 x 750 kVA DG Sets
· LT/HT Panels in B-72 Sub Station
Conclusion:
The narration in the preceding
paragraphs has not and should not
make us complacent. We are not only
aware of that but are also ready for
even bigger challenges. We also
know our weaknesses and limitations
because of which we some times
delay on delivery of services to our
customers. We not only try to address
these weaknesses but are also open
to suggestions for improvement –
after all we pursue the same goal (in
different ways) and are partners to
our BU’s. For this we need
understanding of the BU’s and Depts
and patronage of the Management.
Hot from Siemens Press Worldwide
Siemens and the Technical
University of Aachen (RWTH) to
cooperate in wind energy
research
Siemens Power Generation (PG) and
the Technical University of Aachen
(RWTH) are to cooperate in the further
development of key components for
wind turbines. Andreas Nauen, head of
Siemens Wind Power Division and
Professor Burkhart Rauhut, Chancellor
of RWTH, signed the associated
cooperation agreement in Aachen on
December 7, 2007. The aim of
cooperation here is further development
of the drive train for wind turbines,
Siemens collaborates on study
of an imaging biomarker that
has the potential to detect
proliferative activity of cancer
cells
Siemens Medical Solutions announced
that it has been granted an
Investigational New Drug (IND)
Exemption by the U.S. Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) to conduct a Phase
I clinical trial of [F-18] 3'-fluoro-3'-
deoxythymidine (FLT), a molecular
imaging biomarker that has shown
promise in monitoring the proliferation
of cancer cells, which could help
physicians quickly determine the
150 young journalists
investigate the subject of
automation engineering
The 2007 Technical Journalism
Competition organized by ZVEI and
Siemens Automation and Drives (A&D)
enters its third stage at the Nuremberg
SPS/IPC/Drives 2007 trade fair. After
initial stages in Hanover and Dusseldorf,
young journalists from Southern
Germany will now have an opportunity
for carrying out interviews and research
on the topic of automation engineering.
Over 100 young people with an interest
in journalism from school newspapers
and college campus media have
registered for Nuremberg. This means
a total of about 150 school and college
students are taking part in the 5th
Annual Technical Journalism
Competition. The best of these will
essentially focusing on points such as
efficiency, reliability and service life. A
further aim of this long-term
cooperation project is to assist in
recruiting qualified personnel for PG´s
fast growing wind power sector.
The wind power market is expected to
grow by an average of 14 percent per
year by 2011. Siemens is one of the
leading suppliers of wind power
systems, with growth that outpaces that
of the market. Revenues and orders
booked increased by more than 50
percent in the last fiscal, with Siemens
hiring more than 1,000 additional staff
in this sector during this period.
effectiveness of cancer therapies.
To broaden the scope of FLT research,
Siemens will support the FLT Phase I
clinical trial that will be conducted at
Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center
located in New York City, with whom
Siemens has signed a research
collaboration agreement focused on
the co development of imaging
biomarkers that will be used in PET
imaging. Through these collaborative
efforts Siemens intends not only to
make FLT more readily accessible to
research and academic institutions for
further study, but also to continue
research into new more target specific
imaging biomarkers for PET.
receive their awards in January and, at
the invitation of Siemens A&D, the very
best of them will travel to Cologne to a
TV workshop at the RTL School of
Journalism. In addition, the German
Technical Press Association is offering
editorial work placements.
This competition calls on young
journalists not only to investigate
technology, but also job descriptions in
the technical sectors. In this way, the
organizers want to bring young
journalists into contact with automation
engineering and at the same time
motivate them to report on this topic in
their media for young people. Because
not only the industry, but also the
corresponding specialist editorial offices
for magazine, newspapers and the radio
are reliant on qualified young reporters
with an interest in technology.
Siemens receives its biggest ever
rail automation order worth EUR140
million in America
Siemens Transportation Systems (TS) has
received its biggest ever rail automation order
in America from the Canadian transit
authority Go Transit. Siemens will upgrade
the entire signaling and communication
systems in and around Toronto's Union Station
as well as the traffic control center. All
together, the project is worth around EUR
140 million for Siemens. The entire system
upgrade will take place in 2008 during normal
revenue service. The modernization of the
system – some parts of it dating as far back
as 1920 – covers a section of 5.8 kilometers
including some 42 kilometers of track. The
heart of this system is the Union Station. With
up to 2,000 different rights of way, Union
Station is one of the most complex stations
in North America and, when finished, will be
the biggest station on the continent to be
equipped with electronic interlockings.
Siemens reduces emissions in a
steel mill
In cooperation with a Korean steel
manufacturer, Siemens has developed a
more economical and environmentally
friendly method for the hot metal
production in a steel mill. The Finex process
eliminates the labor- and energy-intensive
process steps of sintering and coke-making
of the blast furnace route which is the
current state of the art technology. The
result is an immense reduction in pollutant
emissions and increased economic
efficiency, The first large-scale plant is
already in operation in South Korea. Others
will be built in India and Vietnam
Siemens introduces the world’s
smallest ultrasound unit for
emergency diagnostics
The first few minutes are often the deciding
factor in emergency situations. For this
reason, Siemens is now offering a mini
ultrasound unit that will enable patients to
receive medical treatment faster than ever
before. Because this unit is just as compact
as a PDA cell phone, weighs only about 700
grams, and easily fits into the physician’s
pocket. It is thus especially suitable for
emergency medical applications, i.e.
examining injuries on site in order to ensure
that each patient receives the medical
treatment he requires. The "Acuson P10"
mini ultrasound unit offers decisive
advantages for first aid in outpatient areas,
rescue helicopters and intensive care units.
Ten Effective ways to avoid Stress
By: Dr. Kamran Farooqui
CMO
In our April 2007
issue we had
discussed about
Stress: what is it,
how it manifests
and affects our
body and why does
it arise? We had also disclosed our
intention to follow it up with tips to tackle
it successfully in our subsequent issue.
Well! We now present some useful and
effective instructions for combating this
niggling condition.
1. Decrease or Discontinue
Caffeine
Many of us do not realize that caffeine
(coffee, tea, chocolate and cola) is a drug,
a strong stimulant that actually generates
a stress reaction in the body. 75% to 80%
of those who stop caffeine notice a
benefit. They feel more relaxed, less jittery
or nervous, sleep better, have more
energy (a paradox, since you are removing
a stimulant), less heartburn and fewer
muscle aches. Many feel dramatically
better and notice a remarkable difference.
One warning, however. Heavy caffeine
users must wean themselves gradually or
they might get migraine-type withdrawal
headaches. Try to decrease by one drink
per day until you have freed yourself
completely.
2. Exercise
Regular exercise can drain off ongoing
stress and keep things under control. At
the very least, it is important to exercise
three times per week for a minimum of
30 minutes each time. Aerobic activities
like walking, jogging, swimming and
bicycling are suitable. Choose things you
like and those that you can maintain for a
longer period. It is also beneficial to have
a variety of exercise outlets. For chronic
or acute stress, exercise is an essential
ingredient in any stress reduction program.
3. Relaxation / Meditation
Just as we are all capable of mounting and
sustaining a stress reaction, we have also
inherited the ability to put our bodies into
a state of deep relaxation which Dr. Herbert
Benson of Harvard University has named
"the relaxation response." In this state, all
the physiologic events in the stress reaction
are reversed: pulse slows, blood pressure
falls, breathing slows and muscles relax.
Where the stress reaction is automatic,
however, the relaxation response needs to
be brought forth by intention. Relaxation
is more than simply having peace of mind,
resting or enjoying a hobby. Deep relaxation
can help you manage stress, and stay alert,
energetic and productive. Fortunately, there
are many ways of doing this.
Relaxation techniques
So how do you truly relax? These
techniques can help you get started. Don't
be discouraged if you don't feel the benefits
right away. Be patient, take your time and
practice and stay motivated.
Relaxed breathing
Have you ever noticed how you breathe
when you're stressed? Stress typically
causes rapid, shallow breathing. This kind
of breathing sustains other aspects of the
stress response, such as rapid heart rate
and perspiration. If you could get control
your breathing, you could avoid cascading
events of acute stress.
Practice this basic technique twice a day,
every day, and whenever you feel tense.
Follow these steps:
l Inhale. With your mouth closed and
your shoulders relaxed, inhale as slowly
and deeply as you can to the count of
six. As you do that, push your stomach
out. Allow the air to fill your diaphragm.
l Hold. Keep the air in your lungs as you
slowly count to four.
l Exhale. Release the air through your
mouth as you slowly count to six.
l Repeat. Complete the inhale-holdexhale
cycle three to five times.
Progressive muscle relaxation
The goal of progressive muscle relaxation
is to reduce the tension in your muscles.
First, find a quiet place where you'll be free
from interruption. Loosen tight clothing
and remove your glasses or contacts if
you'd like.
Tense each muscle group for at least five
seconds and then relax for at least 30
seconds. Start from upper part of your face
then gradually work downwards along your
neck, shoulders, arms, chest and back till
your legs and feet. As you work on a muscle
group first tense them and then gradually
let go the tension till you can feel them
relaxed and flaccid. Repeat each group
before moving to the next muscle group.
Perform progressive muscle relaxation at
least once or twice each day to get the
maximum benefit. Each session should
last about 10 minutes.
Autogenic relaxation
Autogenic means something that comes
from within you. During this type of
relaxation, you repeat words or suggestions
in your mind to help you relax and reduce
the tension in your muscles. Find a peaceful
place where you'll be free of interruptions.
Then follow these steps:
l Choose a focus word or phrase you find
relaxing e.g. "I can handle this" or “I am
peaceful”. This is called a mantra.
l Sit quietly in a comfortable position.
l Close your eyes.
l Relax your muscles, starting at your
head, working down your body to your
feet.
l Breathe slowly and naturally, focusing
on your word, phrase or image.
l Continue for 10 to 20 minutes. If your
mind wanders, that's OK. Gently return
your focus to your breathing and the
word, phrase or image you selected.
l After time is up, sit quietly for a few
minutes with your eyes closed. Open
your eyes and sit in silence for a few
more minutes.
4. Sleep
Sleep is an important way of reducing
stress. Chronically stressed patients almost
all suffer from fatigue (in some cases
resulting from stress-induced insomnia),
and people who are tired do not cope well
with stressful situations. These dynamics
can create a vicious cycle. When distressed
patients get more sleep, they feel better
and are more resilient and adaptable in
dealing with day-to-day events.
Sleeping-in is fine but if you sleep too
long, it throws off your body rhythms
during the following day. It is better to
go to bed earlier. Daytime naps are an
interesting phenomenon. They can be
valuable if they are short and timed
properly (i.e. not in the evening). The
"power nap" or catnap is a short sleep
(five to 20 minutes) that can be
rejuvenating. A nap lasting more than 30
minutes can make you feel groggy.
Patients with sleep disorder should avoid
daytime naps. Beyond these cautionary
notes, sleep can be a key in reducing stress
and helping you cope and function better.
Full text of speech of MD at Annual Conference
Dear Colleagues
It is a historic moment as I stand before
you today. What was just a dream when
we had our first annual conference is
now a reality and we have surpassed
our best expectations. It was William
Arthur Ward who said "If you can
imagine it, you can achieve it. If you
can dream it, you can become it." We
dreamt it and now we have achieved
it making this the best ever year in the
history of Siemens for which the entire
team deserves applause.
If you can
imagine it, you
can achieve it. If
you can dream it,
you can become
it.
While this is indeed a moment of
rejoicing it is also a moment of
reflection. Winston Churchill said “The
farther back you can look, the farther
forward you are likely to see." This is
why today you can see our history
through all the logos that represent
our thought process over the years and
guides us to our future actions that
must lead us to greater heights so that
one day we can look back at today and
find satisfaction in the fact that we did
not stop at the first peek but marched
on to conquer other distant peeks
leaving our footprints for others to
follow behind us. This is what
leadership is all about. You see the
picture outside my office with the
geese flying in formation. Only one
leads the way. In our areas of
operation we are the leader but as in
the case of the geese if the leader
falls back others take its place we
must not take it easy but continue to
lead and that can only come about if
we use our values to sustain our
success.
I am sure you must all be wondering
about the values. Let me talk about
these values one by one. As our CEO
Peter Loscher puts it excellence is
“Attracting the best people: those who
are passionate, disciplined and
motivated.” As you can see there are
more values within this one value and
the most important I think is discipline.
It was Jim Rohn who said “We must all
suffer from one of two pains: the pain
of discipline or the pain of regret. The
difference is discipline weighs ounces
while regret weighs tons.“It is a
common belief that you can gauge the
character of a nation by the discipline
on its roads. It is also true for
companies. Without discipline
companies no matter how successful
are destined to fail. We must instill
discipline in our lives and that means
following the rules and respecting
procedures. The rules and regulations
that are made are not because we had
nothing better to do so we said let us
make some rules. Every rule and every
procedure is the result of a well
thought out exercise where value
addition and maximizing of processes
is intended and those that do not follow
rules and discard procedure are
undermining the very foundations of
our success. This brings me to the issue
of compliance which is the core of our
efforts and the foundation of another
value responsibility. Only by following
the law and conducting our business
on ethical lines can we hope to sustain
success otherwise it will flounder on
our misdeeds. I know that we need to
grow and sustain this success but we
need to do it on healthy foundations
not on foundations infected with the
termite of unethical behavior. This is
Without discipline
companies no
matter how
successful are
destined to fail.
We must instill
discipline in our
lives and that
means following
the rules and
respecting
procedures.
totally unacceptable not only in
Pakistan but globally in the entire
Siemens world.
So how do we sustain our success
without resorting to any short cuts?
Let me quote from that great lady
Helen Keller who said "Character
cannot be developed in ease and quiet.
Only through experience of trial and
suffering can the soul be strengthened,
ambition inspired, and success
cuts to sustainable success. It is a path
littered with challenges and only by
facing these challenges squarely and
thrashing the daylights out of
problems that you can hope to
maintain your present success on
permanent footing.
As a Siemens employee you have many
things going in your favor. You are a
company that is backed by a global
network of innovation and that is the
You are so
fortunate to
belong to a
company where
the solutions you
offer are limited
only by your
imagination.
third value that drives our sustainable
success. With the vast range of
innovative products and latest
technology to help you the ball is
squarely in your court. You can mix,
match and offer innovative solutions
to customers. You are so fortunate to
belong to a company where the
solutions you offer are limited only by
your imagination. Siemens is not just
a company it is practically a universe
in itself and if you really look at it
closely you will find that it is a
company that is mankind’s partner
from the cradle to the grave and even
before that. I say this because a child
will in most probability on an ultra
sound machine before it is born and
again on a Siemens machine that will
diagnose illness in the closing years
of life and in between this person will
be traveling in planes trains and cars
that have Siemens parts, using
Siemens home appliances and
dependent on Siemens system for
water, power and security. No other
company in the world has such impact
on mankind and you are part of that
company which should not only make
you proud and I know that you are
because in the recent Employee
feedback survey the highest rating
recorded was pride in the company.
This is a very good sign because unless
you take pride in your work and your
company you cannot succeed.
Talking of this feedback survey the
aggregate satisfaction index was
recorded at 63%. Some areas that need
to be addressed have also been
identified and a detailed study is being
conducted based on which appropriate
action will be taken and the
implementation status of
recommendations will be reviewed
next year. I want to thank all of you
for participating in this survey which
was for your benefit and for you to
give your opinion so that you feel the
ownership of this company that takes
your opinion very seriously but Let me
draw your attention to the concept of
cross selling which is a vital tool for
our sustainable success. I know that
some of you think it is a waste of time
to help some other business unit but
if everyone thinks on the same lines
how we will sustain our success. There
is an African proverb that says “When
spider webs unite they can tie up a
lion.” This is so true for our business.
All the business units have their
strengths but once we discover our
synergies and pool in our efforts no
company can match our resources and
capabilities. There is so much business
out there for all of us and if we only
keep our eyes and ears open we can
surpass our targets many times over.
There is another thing that is vitally
important to sustaining success. In a
recent article in Fortune Magazine in
an article on leadership the writer
correctly remarks that most companies
maintain their office copiers better
than they build the capabilities of their
people especially the ones who are
supposed to be future leaders. You
cannot sustain success if you do not
build people. How do you build people
you might ask? By investing in their
training, pinpointing their capabilities
and than giving them tasks equal to
their capabilities. If you mismatch
capabilities with work you will not only
ruin your business but also the future
of those working under you. You must
remember that you will not always be
around but the business will be and
success should not be limited to your
own tenure but should sustain well
beyond that. This is how Siemens has
sustained its success for the last 160
years and that is how it will attain
success in the next 160 years.
There is something about which I have
to say something every time. This is
customer focus and the fact that our
salaries and our success depends upon
the satisfaction of our customers. We
are in the kind of business in which
consumer advertising carries very little
value for us. We have no advantage in
telling the common people about our
capabilities except to enhance our
brand image. Our focus is that special
group which in a large part is already
our customer and it is their word of
mouth, their experience with us and
their impression not only of our
products but our services and our
attitude that will sustain our success
in the long term. If a customer buys a
transformer and is delighted with our
after sale service he will not think
twice before also buying a DG set or a
motor or switch gear from us. Our
service and attention to customers not
only increases our own sale but also
gives a big boost to cross selling efforts
as satisfied customers go looking for
Siemens products in every area of their
business. Another reason for customer
satisfaction is the high quality of our
products that makes investment in
Siemens products and services
profitable in the long run. Everyone
should pursue the ideal of quality and
ensure that all processes are diligently
followed to result in the best quality
for our customers.
I would like to state here that the 3i
If you mismatch
capabilities with
work you will not
only ruin your
business but also
the future of
those working
under you.
concept has been redefined and details
about this will soon be placed on the
Intranet. We will soon be empowering
General Managers and above to reward
employees whose ideas benefit the
company. This is very important
because ideas are not the exclusive
property of any individual and anyone
can have a brainwave.
In the end I would like to once again
congratulate you on your efforts that
have resulted in such historic results
but would also like to end with the
quote “We live in a moment of history
where change is so speeded up that
we begin to see the present only when
it is already disappearing." I wish you
the same success each year which is
what sustainable success is all about.
OUR VALUES OUR VALUES OUR VALUES OUR VALUES
Responsibility
Innovation
Innovations from the largest to the most minute
Siemens Pakistan adheres to the global Siemens values of Excellence, Innovation and Responsibility. Here
is how we demonstrate responsibility
Creation of "Technical Trainee Pool"
This pool created by Business Development will consist of 10 fresh engineering graduates and Business
Development Department will be responsible for their training so that they can be groomed in order to fill
immediate gaps in different Business Units. These fresh graduates will be thoroughly versed with Siemens
values and doing clean business every time in line with compliance guidelines. Once they are inducted in a
business unit or corporate department they will already be well versed with company policies so they can
work shoulder to shoulder with other company employees already working within the parameters of compliance.
This will be an on-going process.
Power from the white giant
In Denmark, Siemens Wind Power uses its integral
blade process to manufacture rotor blades that
are up to 52 meters in length and weigh
approximately 16 tons. No adhesives or chemicals
are used in this process. The principal constituent
is a glass-fiber reinforced synthetic which in
contrast to the PVC otherwise used for rotor
construction is recyclable and does not cause litter
problems. Moreover the blade presents an
unprecedented robustness that makes it ideal for
use on the open sea, in so-called offshore stations.
Over the course of its service life of approx. 20
years, the blade can even withstand winds of
hurricane force, without having to be readjusted
or mended. Only recently, Siemens installed the
first off-shore wind farm in the approach to
Liverpool Bay with the largest wind turbines produced in series at present with an individual capacity of 3.6 megawatts
(MW) and a total capacity of 90 megawatts (MW) - enough to supply about 80,000 households with clean power. In the
future the rotor blades will even be as long as 60 meters and drive even more powerful turbines.
Excellence
Siemens Pakistan adheres to the global Siemens values of Excellence, Innovation and Responsibility. Here is
how we demonstrate excellence.
Excellence acknowledged by customer
Siemens OGM and IS team successfully completed Bhit shutdown maintenance and project tie-in activities
safely (without LTI). ENI management were extremely pleased with outcome of this year shutdown, which
was unique due to extended maintenance scope of work, Intelligent pigging of 24" gathering line, Badhra
tie-ins, complex upgrade of DCS system and integration of Badhra 3rd Train, BHP survey, Bhit-6 additional
perforations etc.
It was challenging tasks and without proper planning, hard work and dedication particularly of the Bhit Team
and in general the Karachi supporting teams including but not limited to E & C, C & P, HR, Reservoir Engineering
and Production etc., it wasn’t possible to achieve such successful outcome of shutdown.
With completion of this shutdown the company achieved one of major milestone of 2007 and 2nd challenging
milestone of achieving the Badhra First Gas by end of this year is in front. We hope that again with such
tremendous hard working dedicated teams we will achieve the Badhra First Gas by end of this year (InshaAllah).
ENI even achieved recommencement of sales gas earlier than the planned despite of additional scope of work
that will indeed help in achieving ENI Pakistan this year’s production target.
This excellence was also acknowledged by the customer in writing.
The World's Smallest Ultrasound Device
Fast diagnoses already at the place of accident
In the future doctors can make their initial diagnose already at the
place of action with the small ultrasound device Acuson P10 by
Siemens. The world's smallest ultrasound device fits in any emergency
case or a doctor's lab coat and is particularly well-suited for use in
emergency situations in the ambulance, rescue helicopter, and
intensive care unit.
The developers at Siemens Medical Solutions not only managed to
fit the ultrasound system's complex components into the miniature
device, but also to create high-quality images. As with handheld
computers, the doctor operates the scanner with the thumb. The
device weighing about 700 grams has special lithium-ion batteries
that provide power for up to one hour of scanning.
This way the emergency doctor can identify life-threatening injuries
already at the place of accident and arrange for fast and adequate
treatment. The doctor can store the images immediately and feed
them to the hospital's IT system or assign them to the relevant
patient file.
The Missing Gold Medalist
Medical Solutions visit Tarbela
by: Imran Khan Latif, Medical Solutions
Mr.Asadullah confers the gold medal on Mr.Zaka Ullah
of Peshawar University of Engineering and Technology.
The gold medal recipient Mr.Zaka Ullah with Mr.Asadullah
and other executives of Siemens Islamabad
Mr. Kazi Fahim, Business Manager,
Transportation Systems, attended a 25
months Executive MBA Program at the
Lahore University of Management
Sciences. Out of the 25 months, a total
of 16 weeks (spread over the entire
duration) were on-campus lectures. The
remaining course was to be completed
online. The program entailed sixteen
Mr. Asadullah giving certificate to Mr. Zaka Ullah.
In the ten years that Siemens has been
awarding gold medals to engineering
students not a single recipient has
missed the event. This is because of the
VIP status granted to these students
who are flown in from wherever they
reside and the concerned Siemens
Kazi Fahim earns MBA (Executive) from LUMS
modules on subjects of General
Management, Finance, Marketing,
Organizational Behavior etc.
In the picture, Mr. Kazi Fahim is being
conferred the degree of MBA (Executive)
by Mr. Razzaq Dawood, Director, Lahore
University of Management Sciences.
office ensures their presence by
following up with them till the last
moment. We think of every mishap that
might occur and guard against it but
this year we just couldn’t predict that
an air line will cause the blues for our
gold medal recipient from Peshawar.
The airline cancelled their flight at the
last moment and Mr. Zaka Ullah Zahid
was left stranded at the airport.
Siemens that has instituted these gold
medals for encouragement was not to
be deterred, so a special ceremony was
arranged for Mr. Zaka Ullah Zahid at
CTI Islamabad where Mr. Asadullah
Divisional Director, MOTAC gave the
medal to Mr. Zaka Ullah Zahid, amidst
applause by the Siemens Officials
invited for this special ceremony.
A group of Siemens Medical Solutions,
Islamabad employees visited Terbela Dam
recently. The group comprised of Mr. S.
Imtiaz Ahmed, Mr. Arif Qureshi, Mr.
Naveed Murtaza, Mr. Imran Khan Latif,
Mr. Arjumand Rehman, Mr. Umair, Mr.
Malik Muneer, Mr. Shehzad, Mr. Usman
Ali and Mr. Adnan Aslam. The visit was
arranged by Mr. Imran Khan Latif and it
included stay at Wapda Rest
House,Terbela. Engineers of Dam gave a
power house briefing to the group.
Tarbela Dam is a large dam on the Indus
River. It is located about 50 kilometers
northwest of Islamabad, and a height of
485 ft above the river bed and a reservoir
size of 95 sq miles makes it the largest
earth filled dam in the world. The dam
was completed in 1974 and was designed
to store water from the Indus River for
irrigation and flood control, and for the
generation of hydro-electric power.
The Dam is a major source of Pakistan's
total hydroelectric capacity. It is part of
the Indus Basin Project which resulted
from a water treaty signed in 1960
between India and Pakistan.
The project was funded by the World Bank.
Construction began in 1968, and
continued until completion in 1976.
Siemens played a major role by supplying
and installing the largest turbine of the
time at Tarbela. The dam has a volume
of 138,600,000 cubic yards
(106,000,000 m³). With a reservoir
capacity of 11,098,000 acre-feet (13.69
km³), the dam is approximately 143 m
high and 8,997 feet (2,743 m) wide at
its crest. It helps to maintain the flow of
the Indus during seasonal fluctuations.
Tarbela is a beautiful valley surrounded
by mountains. It is divided in different
colonies like Sobra City, Right Bank
Colony, Sanobar Colony and Mehran
Colony. Many of the residents are
employees of the Water and Power
Development Authority (WAPDA) of
Pakistan.
Twelve Outstanding Inventors Honored
Energy efficiency and care for the
environment are one focus of inventions
at Siemens – and the research and
development activities of six of this year’s
twelve “Inventors of the Year” reflect this
focus. At a ceremony in Munich on
December 3, Siemens CEO Peter Löscher
honored 12 outstanding inventors as
representatives of the company. Their
spectrum of inventions ranges from CO2-
free power plants and a revolutionary
and energy-saving drive concept for
trains, to new imaging techniques for
magnetic resonance and computer
tomography. “You belong to the great
tradition established 160 years ago by
our company founder, Werner von
Siemens, who began discovering answers
to some of the major questions facing
humanity. Similarly, your innovations
now provide solutions for the
development of more efficient energy
supplies, more intelligent production
methods, and more efficient healthcare.”
In fiscal 2007, Siemens applied for a total
of 5,060 patents based on 8,300
inventions and innovations disclosed by
the company’s approximately 32,500
researchers and developers worldwide.
Here are the 12 Innovations:
Reducing the Environmental Impact
of Oil Sands Extraction
Chad Felch, 35, of Rothschild, Wisconsin
(U.S.), provided a major contribution to
making production of oil from tar sand in
Canada more environmentally compatible.
His process uses the so called Zimpro wet
air oxidation (WAO) process to destroy 90
percent of the soot, minimizing the amount
of waste soot requiring disposal. In addition,
the heavy metals in the soot may be able to be recovered and sold as a product.
Use of Contrast Medium with
Computerized Tomography Yields
New Insights
Björn Heismann, 36, of Forchheim,
Germany, has devised new applications for
computer tomography in combination with
contrast media and a special imaging
technique involving the use of two X-ray
tubes. Potential future areas of application
include the identification of cardiac muscle
functionality following a coronary, tumor
classification for oncology, and characterization of vascular deposition.
Subways with Direct Drive Systems
— All Aboard!
Andreas Jöckel, 40, of Ruhstorf, Germany,
has developed an entirely new drive system
that could soon be powering subways and
commuter trains around the world. A
prototype is already traveling the Munich
subway system. In this initial phase it’s
operating without passengers on its nightly
test drives. However, starting in January 2008
it will be used in normal subway operations.
New Technology for Fire and Motion
Detectors Ensures Enhanced Safety
- and No False Alarms
Kurt Müller, 63, of Zug in Switzerland, has
increased the flexibility of infrared motion
detectors, thus reducing the incidence of
false alarms. These detectors are used to
protect properties against intruders. In
addition, for a new series of fire alarm
systems Müller invented an improved type
of flashing light which is visible from any angle and also features low power consumption.
New Cooling System for
Enhanced Cast Resin
Transformers
Fritz Sorg, 59, of Kirchheim unter Teck,
Germany, has enhanced the cooling
system for transformers and thus
increased their lifetime and capacity.
Thanks to the improved cooling system,
fewer raw materials are required to
manufacture the cast resin transformers.
Moreover, transformers already in
operation can be retrofitted.
RFID Wristbands Enhance Safety
for Patients and Hospitals
Alfred Pohl, 44, of Vienna, Austria, has
used RFID systems to enhance the safety
of patients in hospitals. Special radio
wristbands featuring an RFID chip have
already been successfully tested in a pilot
project involving 200 patients at New
York’s Jacobi Medical Center. Siemens also
has developed an RFID watch that can
transmit heart rate data and the location
of patients.
Radical Approach Boosts Efficiency
of CO2-Free Power Plants
Frank Hannemann, 44, of Erlangen,
Germany, has refined the process used for
CO2-free power generation from coal, with
the aim of improving its overall efficiency.
Hannemann’s invention could also play an
important role in the use of renewable
energy sources such as biomass which could
be used more efficiently.
A New “Lightweight” Is
Revolutionizing Urban Rail
Transport
Martin Teichmann, 41, from Graz, Austria,
has developed a revolutionary design for
train traction vehicles that cuts energy
consumption, saves space, and significantly
reduces weight. In all, the new running gear
is approximately two tons per bogie lighter
than today’s technology. A four-car subway
train using the bogie, for example, can
transport about 200 passengers more than a conventionally equipped train, with the
same level of energy consumption.
Big Performance from Small
Switching Box Enables
Development of Brand-New, Low-
Cost 1.5T MRT
Jian Min Wang, 45, of Shenzhen in China,
has simplified the MRT scanner technology,
enabling production of an especially lowpriced
system for hospitals on tight budgets.
He achieved two seemingly mutually
exclusive goals: lower costs due to a less
sophisticated signal receiving system that has been conceived to provide core quality
and, at the same time, the incorporation of the Tim technology by means of an
innovative switching system.
Actuator-Sensor Interface
Reduces Connection Costs
Bernhard Wiesgickl, 50, of Amberg,
Germany, has simplified and reduced the
cost of communications technology used
to connect sensors and motors with control
systems in factories. In other words, his
invention enables the creation of systems
with high availability at a reduced cost
which is very important regarding the
intensifying competition in the field of
industrial communication systems.
Faster Sorting, Faster Delivery -
with a New Storage Module for
Mail Centers
Armin Zimmermann, 53, of Konstanz,
Germany, has invented a basic module
capable in some cases of doubling the
throughput of mail-sorting systems. He
came up with the idea of installing an
automatic interim storage point that can
be used in every sorting unit. This
improves the utilization of the capacity
and saves sorting time.
Services for Industry - Flexibility
Is the Secret to Success
Rupert Maier, 47, of Erlangen, Germany,
has developed various software
applications that simplify the maintenance
of industrial plants. Regardless of whether
the issue is measurement and diagnostics
systems for industrial plants or enhanced
procedures that accelerate the supply of
spare parts, all these innovations help
customers to optimize their processes, identify dangers in advance, and remedy
faults more quickly.
Excursion Trip to Countryside Chalet
By: Naukhez Arslan
A short but a much needed break was
provided, when A&D Division, announced
an overnight excursion trip to a resort
named Countryside Chalet for its
employees.
Buses were scheduled to leave Siemens
Industrial Complex around 5:30 pm in the
evening. It was a fine evening excellent
for an outdoor trip. The resort is situated
in the pastures of Malir Cantonment about
12 kilometers from the Super Highway toll
plaza, near Dumba Goth. Upon nearing
our destination, we were greeted by
numerous sign boards of the resort, as if
welcoming us to our humble abode for
the night.
Upon reaching the place, we were
astounded by the scenic ambiance of the
resort. The resort as its name implied, was
surely a breath of fresh air, a place made
for relaxation and an appropriate
destination for taking time off from one’s
busy lifestyle and schedule.
The place was by all means a true blend
of tradition and natural beauty. It had high
mud walls which projected an image of a
village. The rooms were comfortable by
any standards. Privacy was very much
stressed in the construction of these
rooms. Each portrayed a rural look and
furnished with all the necessary modern
facilities and not to mention surrounded
by abundant greenery.
Refreshments were served immediately
since we were all starving after our long
bus journey. After a diet of Samosas,
Patties, Cakes and Fruits the contingent
proceeded to cricket ground for a flood lit
cricket tournament. Four teams were
formed namely: Khamba XI, Tiger XI,
Chirand XI and Khaleefa XI. The cricket
commenced which went on for a couple
of hours. Chirand XI emerged as the
winners of a four, six over- match
tournament against Khamba XI in a tense
and a nail biting finish.
Highlight of the day occurred in the very
first match between Khamba XI and Tiger
XI. Mr. Umair, who is the senior most
employee in the BU- Gensets, ran to field
the ball for Khamba XI. He made a full
length dive like the one with which Rhodes
ran Inzamam out in the 1992 World Cup,
only that Mr.Umair fell a few feet short
from the ball. This provided a hilarious
break for the spectators, as they all sank
to the ground laughing and clapped in
appreciation of this true display of
sportsmanship. Dinner was served to the
exhausted and hungry “cricketers” and
their families as
they all had
worked a huge
appetite.
Rumbling
stomachs were
finally laid to
rest as all
present ate
heartily. Dinner
no doubt, was
a complete
treat that
satisfied the longing taste buds of the
“athletes”, as they scrumptiously ate their
food and went on for another helping.
After the dinner, the families left for their
respective homes and the remaining
people got their hands on what ever they
could find to amuse
themselves. Some went for a night time
walk, as it was drizzling, some went into
the game room
which offered
games like,
caremboard,
pool, snooker,
table soccer,
table tennis
and the
traditional
dabbu. That
kept us
occupied for
hours. Some
enthusiasts
went into the pool and played all sorts of
makeshift water sports while some
practiced their swimming. Some, were
content on watching television in their
rooms. Some, preferred to just sit in the
pool and talk the night away. Very few, I
must say called
it a night and
retired to their
rooms.
In the morning,
we were served
with a hearty
breakfast of
halwapoori.
After the
breakfast
everyone bid
farewell and
headed home tired though but with happy
memories and no regrets whatsoever after
enjoying such a wonderful and picturesque
place.
10 keys of business leadership skills
by: Sana Nasri, MT
Here are 10 key business leadership skills
you’ll need to succeed as a leader:
1. Lead By Example
You can’t be an aloof leader, someone
that’s never around and incapable of
getting your hands dirty. One of the best
ways to lead is by example - pitching in
where needed, lending a helping hand,
and making sure that the work you do is
clearly understood by your team.
2. Passion
A leader without passion isn’t a leader.
He’s a paper pusher. Or a taskmaster.…
Passion drives a lot, and you can inspire
so much in others through your own
passion and enthusiasm.
3. Be Organized
A disorganized leader isn’t leading; he’s
chasing his own tail. Disorganization
breeds nothing but more disorganization.
If you’re frazzled and messy, your team
will be too. When you’re organized you’ll
be much more productive and so will be
everyone else.
4. Delegate. You can’t do
everything
A great leader needs to be able to delegate
effectively. The key to delegating
successfully is giving employees
ownership of the work you assign them.
They can’t just feel like they own the work,
they really have to.
5. Take Ownership and
Responsibility
Although you’ve just delegated work and
truly given your team ownership, you also
have to take ownership and responsibility
at all times. Your team has to know you’ll
be there for them through the good and
the bad times. That doesn’t mean you
absolve people from making mistakes or
ignore bad work/effort, but it does mean
you take responsibility for the big picture.
6. Communicate Effectively
Everyone knows great leaders have to be
great communicators. But there are
certain points of communication that
many people forget. For example, it’s
critical that you communicate to
employees how their work matters in the
bigger picture. Are they just a part, or
does their work truly make a difference?
It’s appreciation.
Communicating success is also something
leaders forget to do. People need
affirmation. They want to know they did
a good job. You have to tell them.
Insecure leaders will often ramble;
uninterested leaders cut things off too
quickly. While praising or commenting,
be precise, specific and concise. Get to
the point.
7. Be Brave and
Honest
Cowardly leaders will shy away
from any number of situations
that crop up regularly when
running a team. The project your
team has worked on for 6
months just got shelved. Now
what? Or you have to talk to
someone about their lack of
effort recently. Do you ignore
the problem? Or maybe it’s time
to take your product into a new market.
Do you hobble forward, scared and
nervous, or do you grab the market by
the throat? Leaders are brave.
And honest. Tell it like it is. You have to
learn how to present things to your team
in an honest but balanced manner.
8. Great Listener
A huge part of being a great
communicator is being a great listener. If
all you want to do is talk, you’re not a
leader. Keeping people motivated means
listening to them, asking them questions,
understanding their issues.
9. Know Your People
You have to know your people. You don’t
have to be best friends or even socialize
outside work, but you do have to know
what makes them tick. You need to know
something about their personal lives
because their lives outside work matter.
Their lives outside work drive a great deal
of their success (or lack of it) at work.
Keep track of simple things: birthdays,
marriages, children, etc. The more you
know your people the more common
ground you’re likely to find, the more you’ll
be able to connect.
10. Be a Follower
Great leaders are followers too. If you’re
a leader without following, you’re a
dictator. And as fun as that sounds… Being
a leader-follower means finding value in
your team, getting inspired by your team,
encouraging your team to communicate,
brainstorm and be open.
Very few people are great leaders
overnight. It takes time and practice. As
long as you’re open about learning along
the way and working with your team on
leadership versus dictating to them, most
people will be happy to go on the journey
with you. And without getting too mushy,
here are some great
quotes on leadership:
“Don’t tell people how to
do things, tell them what
to do and let them surprise
you with their results.” -
George S. Patto
“The very essence of
leadership is that you have
to have vision. You can’t
blow an uncertain
trumpet.” - Theodore M.
Hesburg.
