<strong>WORKPLACE</strong> HEALTH AND SAFETY POLICY STATEMENT<br />

This policy statement outlines the ACTPS's commitment to the provision of a safe<br />

<strong>and</strong> healthy work environment for all its workers.<br />

The ACTPS recognises that the health, safety <strong>and</strong> wellbeing of its workers are of<br />

primary importance. It is equally as important as service delivery <strong>and</strong> operational<br />

management. Accountability for health <strong>and</strong> safety at work rests with<br />

Directors-General <strong>and</strong> the Head of Service.<br />

The Work <strong>Health</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Safety</strong> Act 2011 requires employers to provide <strong>and</strong> maintain a<br />

safe workplace <strong>and</strong> safe systems of work <strong>and</strong> Section 8{d) of the Public Sector<br />

Management Act 1994 provides that ACT Public Service Agencies (the ACTPS}<br />

shall be administered with an objective of providing safe <strong>and</strong> healthy working<br />

conditions for all workers.<br />

The ACT Public Sector is committed to:<br />

• achieving the highest st<strong>and</strong>ards of workplace health <strong>and</strong> safety for public<br />

service workers;<br />

• ensuring that all workers, as far as is reasonably practicable, are safe from<br />

injury <strong>and</strong> risk to their health while they are at work;<br />

• fostering accountable <strong>and</strong> supportive leadership, a high quality team<br />

environment <strong>and</strong> safe systems of work where staff feel safe, valued <strong>and</strong><br />

respected;<br />

• implementing a coordinated approach to the care, recovery <strong>and</strong> support of<br />

ACTPS injured workers;<br />

• the continuous improvement in injury prevention <strong>and</strong> injury management<br />

performance;<br />

• developing the skill <strong>and</strong> capability of supervisors <strong>and</strong> managers to identify <strong>and</strong><br />

effectively manage employee issues in their teams <strong>and</strong> achieve quality return<br />

to work outcomes;<br />

• providing opportunities for work-based rehabilitation <strong>and</strong> a return to work plan,<br />

where appropriate, for all employees, whether or not an injury or illness<br />

suffered is work related; <strong>and</strong><br />

• ensuring Rehabilitation Case Managers are appropriately trained <strong>and</strong> skilled<br />

to effectively support supervisors <strong>and</strong> managers in managing injury <strong>and</strong><br />

illness in the workplace.<br />

This statement of <strong>Policy</strong> confirms this commitment.<br />

Underpinning this statement are detailed whole-of-government policies, processes<br />

<strong>and</strong> procedures. This policy statement supersedes all previous policy statements on<br />

workplace health <strong>and</strong> safety.<br />
