Marine sniper earns award for valor
By Sgt. Juan D. Alfonso, Marine Forces Pacific
CAMP H. M. SMITH, Hawaii
The hide is a sniper’s safe haven. It’s a hole they dig, cover with
camouflage and live in for days or weeks at a time. But what
happens when a sniper and his team find a bomb in their hide?
For Sgt. Michael G. Dowling, it was a no-brainer.
“He made sure everyone of us got out first,” said Cpl. Daniel
Hilsdorf, a scout sniper with 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine
Regiment. “He was the last one out and refused to leave until
he knew we were all safe. That’s just the kind of guy he is. He’s
a good leader.
Dowling, a scout sniper who currently serves as the
noncommissioned officer in charge for Regional Operations
and Plans, U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Pacific, has deployed
to combat four times. When asked about his experiences, he
remains humble and insists he was simply doing his job.
On July 6, Dowling was recognized for what he chalks up to
just doing what Marines do. He was awarded a Bronze Star
Medal with a “V” device for valor for his actions while serving
in Afghanistan as a scout sniper team leader with Scout Sniper
Platoon, G Company, 2/3, in 2009.
Dowling’s road to heroism began almost nine years ago. On
his way to college, he turned on his radio and was shocked by
what he heard.
The day was Sept. 11, 2001.
Filled with anger and debating what to do with the rest of his
life, he enlisted six days later as a Marine infantryman.
“It was something I had always wanted to do,” Dowling said.
“A lot of my family members were former Marines. I hadn’t
been to my classes for a while and I just kept putting off talking
to a recruiter. 9/11 sealed the deal for me.”
In 2003, Dowling deployed to the Persian Golf in support of
the initial invasion of Iraq. He deployed to Iraq in 2005 as a
fire team leader and again in 2006 as a squad leader.
Always seeking to challenge himself and prove his worth, Dowling
decided it was time for a change and became a scout sniper.
“It was the next logical step,” he said. “As a sniper, I got to operate
more independently and there was a lot more responsibility.
As a squad leader, I was given missions, told where to go and
According to his award’s summary of action, Dowling’s abilities
“He’ll never admit it, but he went above and beyond what is
required from a sniper team leader,” said Hilsdorf, who served
as Dowling’s assistant team leader. “Whenever he went on a
mission, he always carried the heaviest pack. He’s the kind of guy
who leads by example, is very knowledgeable Good and works Luck hard.”
We had 64 seniors sign up for Medicare insurance for 2011
and those turning 65 were able to join the ConnPACE and
MSP plans. What a year this has been for insurance changes,
companies sold, increases in our 2011 plans for next year and
a wonderful surprise that some companies have supplemented
a 0 zero cost per month. Of course, this means you must pay
a small co-pay when you visit your doctor but the overall
savings is worth it. We had over 100 seniors who are now on
the Medicare Savings Plan and ConnPACE plans to help save
THE BIG SURPRISE
by Barbara Foran
Did you ever try to keep
together you will see that
a secret in a small town? I
George devoted 45 years of
mean a really big secret? Well
volunteerism to the town of
the great town in which we
Andover and I doubt that
live did just that through
any one else has ever donated
the month of October. Our
that much time in their
Municipal Agent and a Van
lifetime. He not only drove
driver decided that since
the shopping trips but did
the ‘Boss’ of the Van drivers
most of the medicals as well
was retiring that he should
in the beginning. Now the
be honored by a retirement
drivers are being paid to do
party and the ball started
the medicals through a grant
rolling. For the those of
received through Agent
you who don’t know, but
Palazzi‘s efforts. When he
you must as it did make a
first started driving he asked
local paper, I am talking about George Collette who helped our selectman, who at that time was Jean Gasper, how far
in getting the Van system started in Andover 25 years ago from Andover he could take the van and she said she had
and drove as a volunteer for all those years. He started no idea but said to ask the insurance agent who was located
driving after having served on the local Fire Department in Andover at the time. In doing so George found that there
for 20 years of service, so if you add those two numbers was no limit as to distance, that the van would be covered.
Before he took a trip he would always go to the place he
had thought of to make sure it was handicap accessible. So
where did he take a group of seniors the first time, but to his
favorite restaurant in Bernardston, Ma. And so started all
the great trips that the seniors have enjoyed all these years. I
must mention that now when we take any trip that is of any
distance from Andover that all passengers contribute to the
fuel fund, in case anyone is worried about their tax bill ! As I
drove the van for 18 years myself I know what a tremendous
responsibility this job is and over the past couple of years
we have been able to add three new drivers to add to the
two regular ones. John England has been a steady driver
for years and we now have George Knox, the new ‘Boss’ at
Collette’s asking, Don Beauvais, who keeps the vans spotless
and Dawn Quint, our youngest driver.
WINTER STORMS – BE PREPARED!
By Mary Duval, Andover Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)
We all know the saying: in New England, if you don’t like the weather, wait a minute.
But during winter storm season (December – March/April), preparedness is the key
to protecting yourself, your family, and property from storm dangers posed by high
winds, snow and ice, and power outages. Don’t wait, prepare now.
The National Weather Service issues Winter Storm Watches when conditions are
favorable for heavy snow or ice accumulation within a 24 – 36 hour period. A Winter
Storm Warning is issued for 6 or more inches predicted in a 12-hour period, or for
8 or more inches in a 24-hour period. Blizzard warnings include high winds and low
visibility. Winter storms pose the added threats of hypothermia, frostbite, carbon
monoxide poisoning, and frozen water pipes in your home. If you have a generator,
learn how to use and exhaust it properly. Carbon monoxide detectors can save lives.
Evacuate if told to do so; don’t wait until snow and ice make roads impassable.
Seventy percent of winter storm fatalities occur in automobiles! If you must shelter
in place without power, “camp out” in one room to conserve heat. Use a tent and
sleeping bags or thick blanket rolls. Keep pets with you; take dogs “out” in an area
as sheltered from wind as possible. Fill every water container available before turning
off the water and draining the pipes by leaving the lowest faucet open. A toilet can
be flushed with a bucket of water. Pour RV-grade antifreeze, or even vodka, into the
toilet trap to prevent freezing. (Don’t drink the vodka! Alcohol can increase your risk
of hypothermia.) During severe cold, keeping well hydrated is of utmost importance
in warding off hypothermia and frostbite. This applies to pets as well.
What supplies do you need? Water: at least a three-day supply, a minimum of one
gallon per person per day. Pets should have their own allotment of water as well.
Food: at least a three-day supply of non-perishable, easy-to-prepare food, cans
preferably with tab openers. Also have on hand flashlights for each family member,
extra batteries, LED lanterns (NOT candles), a hand-crank or battery powered radio,
a seven-day supply of medications, sanitation and personal hygiene items, first aid kit,
cell phones and chargers, a multi-purpose tool. Include items specific to your family
needs, such as baby and pet care items, and senior care essentials. In disaster situations,
ATMs may be down, so have extra cash on hand. Your household needs an evacuation
plan! Talk with family members and create one that will work for you. Keep a list of
family contacts and copies of important personal and legal documents (medical info
and medication list, proof of address, deed, insurance policies, a disc with photos of
house and contents); secure these in a zipper bag or waterproof container. A camera
will be needed to document any property damage. This list is by no means complete;
include any items you feel you may need for survival and comfort, such as respirators,
paper filters for water, and seasonal items like sunscreen, insect repellent, or chemical
hand and foot warmers. Your emergency supplies can be assembled in a large plastic
covered storage bin and kept in an easily-accessible location in your home or garage.
Check the dates on your food items periodically, and change the water supply every
six months or so.
The guidelines here touch on some of the things you can do to prepare for and ride
out seasonal storms. There is much more to learn about preparedness and survival,
and many sources of information, such as books, videos and Web sites. For extensive
information, visit the U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security’s Web site at www.ready.
gov. Information is also available through Andover Emergency Management through
the First Selectman’s office; and from our local Fire Department.
Don’t “wait a minute” for the weather to change – it may change for the worse! Have
a plan, be prepared, and stay safe this winter.
If you’re looking for small trees for your landscape, the
dogwoods are an outstanding choice. There are three to
consider--flowering kousa and the hybrids.
The flowering dogwood (Cornus florida) has large white, pink,
or red floral bracts. In the fall, the leaves turn red with bright red
fruit which the birds love. They reach a height of about twentyfive
feet, growing broader than tall, giving them a spreading,
layered look. The flowering dogwoods are susceptible to the
dogwood borer and anthracnose, a fungal disease.
There are many flowering dogwood cultivars. The dwarf
cultivars grow about six feet tall, and there are cultivars with
variegated leaves. Purchase only named cultivars as the unnamed
dogwoods are grown from seeds and vary in vigor, color, and
shape. Their cold hardiness is Zone 6 (-5 to 5 degrees).
The kousa dogwood (cournis kousa) is a native of Japan,
China, and Korea. The bracts are creamy green as they begin
to open, turning pure white. They are smaller than those of the
flowering dogwood but bloom more heavily and three to four
weeks longer. The fruit resembles oversized raspberries and the
fall leaf color is dark red.
Kousas have a vase-shaped appearance growing to about
twenty feet tall. They are resistant to the dogwood borer and
anthracnose and are slightly hardier, growing well throughout
THE ORNAMENTAL DOGWOOD
Zone 5 (-10 to -5 degrees).
The majority of kousas are grown from seed and differ widely
in vigor, size, and shape of their bracts. Purchase only those
with a sturdy stem and large, flat, dark green leaves.
Hybridized dogwoods (Cornus hybrida) is a cross between the
kousa and the flowering dogwoods. The bracts are about the
size of the flowering dogwood. The bracts are about the size of
the flowering dogwood, and the flowers are plentiful like the
kousa. They branch low to the ground and have an even spread
all the way up. Their cold hardiness is that of the flowering
dogwood.
All dogwoods grow best in full sun, with moist, but drained
soil. Trees that are under stress are most attached by borers and
anthracnose.
How Cornus Florida Came to be Known as Dogwood
When the early settlers were weaving their homemade linseywoolsey
(a tough fabric made of linen and wool threads,) the
shuttle, being thrown from one side of the loom to the other
required a very hard wood to withstand the heavy friction.
Since the shuttle was commonly called a “dog”, and Cornus
florida was the necessary hardwood used for making shuttles,
the wood became known as “dog wood.”
CARBON MONOXIDE SAFETY TIPS
Often called the silent killer, carbon monoxide is an invisible,
odorless, colorless gas created when fuels (such as gasoline,
wood, coal, natural gas, oil and methane) burn incompletely. In
the home, heating and cooking equipment that burn fuel can be
sources of carbon monoxide.
• CO alarms should be installed in a central location outside
each sleeping area and on every level of the home. For the
best protection, interconnect all CO alarms throughout the
home. When on sounds, they all sound.
• Choose a CO alarm that has the label of a recognized testing
laboratory.
• Test CO alarms at least once a month.
• If the audible trouble signal sounds, check for low batteries.
If the battery is low, replace it. If it still sounds, call the fire
department.
• If the CO alarm sounds, immediately move to a fresh air
location outdoors or by an open door or window. Make
sure everyone inside the home is accounted for. Call for
help from a fresh air location and stay there until emergency
personnel arrive.
• If you need to warm a vehicle, remove it from the garage
immediately after starting it. Do not run a vehicle or other
fueled engine or motor indoors, even if the garage doors are
open. Make sure the exhaust pipe of a running vehicle is not
covered with snow.
• During and after a snowstorm, make sure vents for the
Driveway Maintenance
It’s that time of year again – snow! Residents are encouraged
to maintain their driveways and walkways. Please remove
snow and ice as promptly as possible. In an emergency
every second counts. We thank you in advance for your
cooperation.
dryer, furnace, stove and fireplace are clear of snow build-up.
• A generator should be used in a well - ventilated location
outdoors away from windows, doors and vent openings.
• Gas or charcoal grills can produce CO – only use outside.
• CO enters the body through breathing. CO poisoning
can be confused with the flu symptoms, food poisoning
and other illnesses. Some symptoms include shortness of
breath, nausea, dizziness, lightheadedness or headaches. Do
not hesitate to call 911 if you feel you may be experiencing
CO poisoning.
New Year Computer Buying
By Allen Stein of the Computer Tamers
A new year is here and many people buy computers. If you are
planning on buying a new computer, take a few minutes and
read this article. We get many emails each month asking us for
advice on buying a new computer. As technicians we see the
“good, bad and ugly” every day; and we know which ones will
last and which ones will give you the worst time.
We’ve come up with some guidelines for to follow to ensure
that you get the best new computer for your needs while at the
best price.
First of all we recommend an Intel processor for desktops. If
you are buying a notebook, we recommend the Intel processor
family of chips that integrates the processor with advanced
wireless networking and there’s more memory on it to speed
everything up. Never buy a budget laptop, its outdated the
moment you take it home. For students and people who travel,
a new Netbook laptop may be a good choice. These little marvels
can surf the web, do email and word processing Headers with ease, but
they don’t have the power for advanced apps and gaming. The
service life of a budget computer is less than 2-years. Getting a
better computer such as a “middle-of-the-road” one will last you
4-to-5-years and not be as slow as a turtle.
Second the best computer buy isn’t the lowest price, but the
best price for the value received. Intelligent purchasing should
be practiced with everything you buy. Today we don’t hear
much about value; value is the real measure of everything you
buy. Often people buy “cheap things” and they break and then
they buy more “cheap things” and they break too. It’s better in
the long-run to buy quality than to buy “cheap” any day; this
rule applies to people who are on a budget; they can least afford
repeat buying.
Think before you buy your next computer. Check out the ads
for often these ads are “come-on’s” and if you don’t upgrade
and spend more money, you’re in for having big frustrations
and slow-processing time as long as you own this “supposedly”
good-buy. Remember you can’t turn a turtle into a rabbit!
Thirdly we recommend Windows 7 Home Premium for most
all home users and Windows 7 Professional for business users.
Windows 7 Professional is designed for organizations that have
a Microsoft network with a domain. Home networks will work
fine with 7 Home Premium. Windows 7 Ultimate provides all
A NEW computer infection is released
You depend on your computer!
Computers are fundamentally
problematic.
They are complex machines.
of the features and functions; power users may opt for it. For
those who must have Windows XP a professional service can
still provide it with a new computer. Why not consult with
a technician to determine if Windows 7 is best for you? XP
may be the better choice when you have older software to run
and hardware y bes 7 Premiump spending money to upgrade,
that is if it is possible to upgrade the “to connect to the new
computer. Keep in mind that Windows 7 Professional has an
optional XP compatibility mode.
Fourth your new computer should have at least 2GB of RAM
to run Windows 7, 3GB or 4GB will be better depending on
what you do with the computer. Some new computers can
handle 8GB for power users. Less than 2GB will turn your
new computer into a turtle. 1GB is enough RAM for XP. Less
RAM makes turtles while more RAM makes fast rabbits.
Fifth we recommend for desktops a minimum of a 500GB
hard-drive especially if you are going to do digital photography,
music, and video. Hard-drives have gotten bigger and cheaper
to buy. For laptops 150 GB is fine; but remember the bigger
the better!
It makes good sense to keep your personal data on your hard
drive as long as you back it up on a regular basis. If you don’t
back up your data, music, videos and pictures you’re foolish;
plain and simple!
Sixth we suggest a DVD-RW-drive so that you can copy data
and music to CD’s and DVD’s. A DVD-RW is a cost-effective
backup device. Buy a 16GB USB “thumb” drive for backup.
This seventh guideline is often overlooked by computer buyers;
yet it is extremely important. When you buy your new desktop
computer include a UPS-power-backup-unit to protect your
computer from electrical surges and brownouts. UPS means
“Uninterrupted Power Supply.” It has nothing to do with
UPS the shipping company! A small UPS is about $70 be sure
to get one. An inexpensive UPS is better than the best surge
protector and also permits your computer to automatically
shut down when there is a power-loss thereby protecting your
operating system and your valuable data. You must also get
an inline surge-protector for your laptop power adapter; APC
makes a good one.
One last point is that you should buy your next computer from
a service center that includes setup and configuration so that
you will enjoy computing immediately. Often people try to
do the setup and configuration themselves causing them to
spend many frustrating hours and often they end-up with an
unprotected computer that is easily compromised and infected
while on the Internet. An unprotected computer is like “red
meat” to a hungry lion when it is on the Internet. Trojans,
viruses and spyware infections happen in a split-second. A local
computer store can also copy your important data, pictures and
music from your old computer to your new one as part of the
initial setup; a great value. For example they will transfer you
data, install and configure your antivirus, dispose of your old
system, install essential elements such as Adobe Reader, Flash,
JAVA, and Silverlight and ensure all Windows updates are done
making your computer secure and safe from the start. A local
company will provide follow-up support and training. It makes
sense to buy from a local computer store instead of those bigbox-stores
for Roth IRA Conversion
If you already have a Roth IRA, you’re
aware of its biggest benefit: Your earnings
grow tax free, provided you meet certain
conditions. If you don’t have a Roth
IRA, you may want to consider one —
and it may be easier for you to do just
that in 2010.
Before we get to the reasons why
2010 may be your year to open or
convert to a Roth IRA, let’s look at some differences between
Roth and traditional IRAs. If you own a traditional IRA,
your contributions may be tax-deductible, depending on
your income level. But whether you can make deductible
contributions or not, your earnings grow on a tax-deferred
basis, which means your money can grow faster than it would if
it were placed in an investment on which you paid taxes every
year. On the other hand, Roth IRA contributions are never taxdeductible,
but your earnings grow tax free, as long as you’ve
held your account at least five years and you don’t start taking
withdrawals until you’re at least age 59½.
Furthermore, unlike a traditional IRA, a Roth IRA does not
require you to start taking distributions when you reach 70½.
Consequently, you’ll have more flexibility and freedom when it
comes to making withdrawals.
If you have a traditional IRA, you might be thinking it’s a good
idea to convert to a Roth IRA because tax free sounds better
than tax deferred — and, all things being equal, tax free would
indeed be better. However, it’s not quite that simple. If you
convert your traditional IRA to a Roth IRA, you’ll have to pay
taxes on those traditional IRA earnings and contributions that
had previously gone untaxed. If you do convert, you’ll be better
off if you use money held outside your IRA to pay the taxes. If
you simply take money from your IRA, you’ll obviously lower
the value of your IRA — and, if you’re under 59½, you may
have to pay an additional 10% penalty on the amount
you withdraw to pay the taxes.
In the past, many investors have been prohibited from
converting their IRAs due to either their tax filing
status or their income. Under previous rules, you could
convert your traditional IRA to a Roth IRA only if you
were married and filed a joint return or were a single
filer, and your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI)
was $100,000 or less. But starting in 2010, you can
convert funds to a Roth IRA even if your MAGI is over
$100,000. You will also be able to convert to a Roth if
you are married and file separate tax returns.
And that’s not the only piece of good news regarding
your conversion ability. As mentioned above, you will
have to pay taxes when you convert to a Roth IRA.
However, if you convert in 2010, you can choose to
report the taxable income from the conversion over
a two-year period, in 2011 and 2012. You may find
that spreading the taxes over two years can make the
conversion more affordable.
In any case, consult with your tax advisor before
converting from a traditional IRA to a Roth. If done
correctly, such a conversion can potentially make a big
difference in your ultimate retirement lifestyle.
