HTI for you | Summer 2011 Showtime for our profile extrusion The Open-House-Days in Micheldorf on May 04 and 05 attracted quite an audience. More than 100 visitors followed the impressive demonstrations of the new extrusion line OMNIA in action with tension and excitement. Everything in connection with profile extrusion was on offer at the in-house show of High Tech Extrusion, which was held in Micheldorf on May 04 and 05. The invitation was followed by more than 100 visitors from various continents. The informative program, which was opened by HTI CEO Peter Glatzmeier and High Tech Extrusion manager Xaver Gruber, who welcomed the guests, contained speeches and demonstrations of efficient solutions and ground-breaking innovations in the field of profile extrusion. Economical, more economical, OMNIA The star of this year’s in-house show was naturally the parallel twin screw extrusion line OMNIA. Just as how energy efficient this extrusion allrounder really is, was demonstrated on site to the large number of interested customers. Mister Gehring/SKZ Kunststoff Zentrum Würzburg carried out a direct energy measurement and was hence able to prove the advertised energy savings to be true quite clearly. Quick, quicker, OMNIA tool quick change system The visitors took the opportunity, to have the advantages of this reliable, efficient and productive extrusion line shown to them. Of special interest was especially the quick change system for profile tools. Since, for customers it is essential, that the various tools, which give the raw material the requested shape (for example window profiles in the most different shapes), can be changed quickly. Thus, expensive down times can be avoided. To which extent time is actually saved by OMNIA during production, was impressively proven by the High Tech Extrusion in the course of the held “trial run”. Learn and Eat The in-house show of High Tech Extrusion contained also interesting speeches in German and English language about nearly everything in connection with PVC profiles. As external speakers Mr. Egger/Chemson, who talked about modern stabilisation systems as well as Mr. Kleinschitz/ SKZ, who talked about the examination of window profiles, were managed to be gained. The successful first day was topped off by a very entertaining dinner event at the Landhotel Schicklberg, where besides a first-class dinner the “Chaos Kellner Show” a really entertaining menu theatre impressed the guests. Immediate Success The technical perfection, combined with functionality and ergonomic design – short OMNIA – generated great interest, like it did already at the K 2010. “The Open-House-Days lay the foundations for the conclusion of orders worth millions” says a pleased Xaver Gruber about the Open-House- Days and titles them as “a well organized and successful event”.
HTI FOR YOU: Mr. Sandberg, what did you expect from the Open-House-Days of High Tech Extrusion? Mr. Sandberg:I knew a lot of what to expect as we had been talking to High Tech Extrusion on projects prior to the Open House, therefore I expected to see a supplier who had taken major leaps forward in customer focus, and I wasn’t disappointed. HTI FOR YOU: What did impress you the most? Mr. Sandberg: Most impressive has been the change in emphasis of an extrusions supplier. The shift in emphasis from selling the biggest output machine, to one that reduces scrap/ downtime, aids production to perform is a massive USP compared to your competitors. It’s generally a battle on the specification of a project to get items required to make things better at the factory, here, it’s your USP and you’re pushing us to be a more efficient manufacturer. HTI FOR YOU: High Tech Extrusion presented the OMNIA calibration table, which consumes extraordinarily little energy. Is energy consumption an issue within your company? Mr. Sandberg: Energy consumption is an issue always, scrap is a large cost driver though. The other major advantage I thought of the new system is noise reduction. The more people on the shop floor can think clearly, and hear their colleagues, the better they will perform. The format of our calibration tables however, makes it hard to justify the new system. High Tech Extrusion needs to get creative in the different ways it can offer the solution, and not just rely on it being built into the table. 1 One of the visitors was Tim Sandberg, Business Improvement Manager (extrusions) at dhm Plastics Ltd – a company of the Aliaxis Group, belonging to the world’s largest extrusion groups. HTI FOR YOU talked to Mr. Tim Sandberg about the show: HTI FOR YOU: Many profile extruders still use a saw. High Tech Extrusion presented the new OMNIA guillotine. What in your opinion are the advantages of this guillotine? Mr. Sandberg: The advantages are obvious – no “cut scrap” for the width of the blade, so material saving, low noise, no dust or extraction units to maintain. The only issue from our perspective is can we cut every shape as we don’t have window profiles to cut, but long periphery products with thin wall thicknesses. HTI FOR YOU: During the Open-House-Days also the new OMNIA quick tool changing system was demonstrated. How much time could be saved in your company, would this system be in use? Mr. Sandberg: The tool changing system was impressive, the other advantage is reduced mistakes which I think probably will save more money and time, than the reduced downtime for changing a tool over. However, we are being forced into shorter and shorter run lengths, so quick changeover becomes more and more a criteria we need to be competitive on, or we will end up with more changeover time than we have running time. HTI FOR YOU: What in your opinion defines the extrusion line of the future?
