Retirement Speech from Convention Banquet
by Joan Carpenter
First, a big Thank You to Jake Skinner. Jake puts a huge amount of
time and effort into these conventions. He has been responsible for much
of the banquet planning as well as making sure many of the activities run
smoothly. Jake also obtained most of the sponsorships so you could enjoy
this free meal!
33 1/3 years—as we were thinking about what to say, I realized this is
a third of a century. How do you summarize that in 5 or 10 minutes? John
wanted to just say “thanks” but I thought there was a bit more to say. I think
this will be the fi rst time ever that I’ll have the opportunity to outtalk him!
I’d like to tell a little bit about the early years. When we were hired in
1975, I’m not sure what expectations we had—maybe none—but it was a
job and we needed a job. Ron Smith, who is here today, was on the board at
the time. Last night, he said to me the board wasn’t sure what they had done
when they hired “those long-haired hippies but I guess it worked out okay”.
At that time the offi ce was located in the previous secretary’s home in
Illinois and, when she resigned, of course the fi les and supplies were moved
to our home. At that time, the Association had no “home” of its own. All registry
papers were done on a typewriter and a 6 x 9 card fi le was kept for each
animal. With an increasing volume of business it didn’t take too many years
for us to decide a computer system was needed. After a lot of research in
the early 80’s, the board approved purchasing a computer system. This IBM
system was purchased and set up at a cost of $30,000. The computer itself
weighed over 1000 lbs. and likewise the printer weighed over 1000 lbs. The
system was used, with small upgrades, until 1999 when it became necessary
to purchase a system that would be compatible with the new millennium.
Although the computers have been replaced, the basic design is used today.
It has been amazing to see the transformation in technology.
Now that you’ve heard more than you probably wanted to about that
subject, I’d like to talk about working for the RWDCA for so many years. There
are certainly many stories we could tell but it would take all night—anyway,
we might be talking with some of you privately later—these stories might be
more valuable to us if left untold!
Well, really we want to say thanks to the many people who helped and
supported us through the years. First, we want to say thank you to our offi
ce support staff: Ronda, Jo and Audrey and to our computer support, Mike,
Boyd and Erika. Without them, our jobs would have been so much harder,
if not impossible. We’ve been fortunate to work with these dedicated, hardworking
friends.
Next, we want to thank the many members of the boards of directors
we have worked for over the past 33 years. These directors have volunteered
their time, money and services to the organization and get very little thanks
in return. Every member should take the time to let the directors know you
appreciate their efforts.
Most importantly, we want to thank our wonderful daughters, Kelly,
Mikki and Jenny for their help and patience through the years. We know
there were many times when they wished that we could be doing something
besides looking at Red & White cows or working in the offi ce but they never
complained.
And, last but not least, we would like to thank each and every one of
the members. Without their support, all of this would not be possible. We
appreciate all the kind words and gifts we have received. We will remember
all of the good times we’ve had and we’ll cherish each and every friendship
we’ve made. This is the most rewarding part of our jobs over the last 33 years
and we have been truly blessed to have our family and friends.
Looking to the future, it is an exciting time to be a part of the RWDCA
and to promote the Red cow. We will be continuing to assist Stephanie and
Nicole with their learning process. We ask the members to have patience
during this transition time and to continue supporting Stephanie and Nicole
and helping them in whatever way you can. We have volunteered to help
with check-in at the All-American in Harrisburg so some of you will see us
there—you’re not rid of us quite yet! Again, we want to thank each and every
one and wish for continued success of the RWDCA and the Red cow.
Thank you!
Red Bloodletter - Final Words
On Breeding—the current selection of proven and sample sires in the Red breed is by far the
best ever. Just a few years ago, it was challenging to find one good Red sire. Now, there is
a solid lineup of high production, fancy type and sound all-around Red sires, combined with
a most promising undergraduate class that will continually improve the selection available.
While individual breeders may chose to emphasize high production, elite type or improved
management traits, the Red Breed as a whole clearly needs to focus more on production and
management traits to strengthen appeal to both the commercial and the worldwide market.
The long-term success of the breed will depend on developing Red sires that are competitive
in these areas and the genetics are available to accomplish this. For example, incorporating
Shottle’s genes into the Red breed through RC sons and daughters will strengthen the future
of Reds. Dare to be different and think outside the box. Continue to focus on all four key
areas: production, type, management traits and components. And last, consider the use of
aAa or DMS to breed cattle that are more balanced, avoiding the extremes that result in less
function, less profit and less stayability. Today, many years of emphasis on taller, sharper,
more dairy cattle has led to a lack of strength, width and substance of bone that is largely
responsible for the management trait woes of the modern U.S. cow.
On A.I.—the A.I. industry deserves a great deal of credit for the steady progress in Red, both
the major companies and the smaller ones that have specialized in Red such as Trans-World,
SunShower and ABC Genetics. Today, I would challenge A.I. to be more aggressive, more
creative and more varied in their Red programs. A.I. has a huge influence on each breed
and along with that comes a real responsibility. While profit must be their top priority, the
long-term progress of each breed should be second. This requires more than catering to
popular trends. Individual breeders may chose many different goals and A.I. should strive to
offer sires that allow breeders to reach their goals.
On Polled—there’s no doubt that polled is an advantage for the Red breed. From a labor
standpoint, a management standpoint, a humane standpoint and, perhaps most of all, a
marketing standpoint, polled is both desirable and easy to breed for! Now, with the #1 TPI
Red sire being polled and a growing selection of hornless sires, this breed advantage should
increase rapidly and be capitalized upon. Hats off to Dave Burket, Eddie Johnson and Bob
Feldwisch for having the foresight to combine Red and polled genes in their programs many
years ago.
On Genomics—my fi rst reaction to this development that goes a long way to identifying the
best genetics for production, type and management traits was lukewarm. It takes a good
deal of challenge and anticipation out of breeding the next generation. On further reflection,
I realize it is a giant step forward for two reasons: (1) It will identify the better genetics, as
well as those not worthy of much use, more quickly. Therefore, breeding a better Red cow
will be easier and that is what it is all about. A number of recent widely-used Red sires have
been disappointing; these bulls may never have been sampled at all in the “genomics era”.
(2) It will re-evaluate cattle regardless of their tremendous records, show winnings, or “hype”.
Their true genetics will become much clearer, for better or worse. Likewise, some cattle that
have not been recognized as valuable genetic resources will be discovered. Often, they will
be in herds that breed good cattle but do not focus on building indexes, winning shows, or
promoting their cattle. Recognizing both superior and inferior genetics will become much
easier, and that has to be a good thing.
On Crossbreeding—while most probably hoped the last Issue included the final word from
me on crossbreeding, there is one point left. I am convinced that any breeder blending
Red breeds will be able to breed a more profitable herd by including a significant amount
of the best Red Holstein genetics. It has been recommended that other Red breeds avoid
Red Holstein blood and purge their breed of current Red Holstein influence. If the goal is
to develop a better Red cow, why eliminate the breed that offers both the best production
and the best type, especially udders? Currently, 8 of the top 10 sires in the Red Dane breed
are 50% or more Red Holstein…is that such a bad thing? The success of the German Red
Angler breed incorporating Red Holstein genetics is comparable to the Red Dane story. Mr.
Bill Thompson, founder of the International Red Cow Club in Australia and a man whom I
greatly admired, had a vision of blending the best genes from various Red breeds to develop
a better Red cow. The RWDCA has always operated the same way and the choice of using
Red Holstein (or any Red breed) should be up to individual breeders, not breed offices or
breeding experts. One last note on crossbreeding…I have never understood why some
purebred breeders are so opposed. Shouldn’t everyone follow their own path and respect
those who choose a different one?
On People—looking back over 30 years, I will risk offending “a lot” of people by mentioning
“a few” of those individuals who played a positive role in the RWDCA. If you, or someone you
know, is deserving but missing, consider it an oversight by an absentminded editor.
Presidents
Dr. J.P. Ostrander (1973-1979) “Doc” stands alone as the person who kept the Association
alive and operating during the most challenging time in our history. When various factions
threatened to tear the Association apart, he worked diligently with a majority of the Board to
keep the RWDCA afl oat. I am convinced the Association would not have survived without
his leadership. The offi ce building at Crystal Spring is named in his honor.
Jerry Good (1982-1987) (2007-?) A dedicated president who guided a period of growth and
success, including the building of the office, Jerry came out of retirement to guide the current
transition to new management. His years of experience with RWDCA and his leadership skills
have been a steady infl uence.
Jack King (1998-2000) While president for just three years, Jack led the Association through
both major challenges and solid accomplishments. He was much more involved and “hands
on” in his approach than most and widely respected for his leadership skills, his judgment
and his dedication.
Ed Peck (2000-2005) Innovation and involvement define Ed’s five years as the leader of the
RWDCA. Dedication and a real love of Red & White cattle also are obvious qualities that come
to mind. Ed continues to be involved with RWDCA under the April-Day banner.
Directors
John Gage (64-66) Founder of the Association and very influential in the early years.
Dr. John P. Ostrander (66-87) Previously mentioned, his 21 years of dedicated service ended
only with his death on July 4, 1987. No one loved Red & Whites and the RWDCA more, and
no other inspired so many to get involved in Reds.
Ron Smith (73-82, 83-88) A strong and direct approach to all issues, more common sense
than most and a love of the Association describe Ron. He devoted countless hours to the
by John Carpenter
36
RWDCA, including a re-write of the bylaws and development of the true-type model. Ron and
his wife Lois are among the many good friends Joan and I gained through the Association.
Charles Ford (76-85) Another good friend from Asheville, NC, Charlie was blessed with an
ability to work well with others and apply reason to all issues. He recently passed away and
will be missed by many.
Jerry Good (77-98, 07-?) The only director to hold the position longer than “Doc” Ostrander.
Don “Reb” Albrecht (78-81, 87-89) A Canadian by birth but a citizen of the world, he rivals
“Doc” Ostrander in his influence on the RWDCA. His worldwide promotion of Red & Whites
was unsurpassed in his day. An auctioneer, a breeder, RWDCA classifi er, and an amazing
promoter, Reb is the only person to have an entire Issue dedicated to him (May 1989) following
his unexpected death at a young age. I remember him most for this enthusiasm, his energy,
and his crazy sense of humor and his wonderful way with children. The Albrecht Memorial
Fund, benefiting RWDCA youth, was established in his honor and memory.
Wayne Susina (77-86) This Elkhorn, Wisconsin native, who developed the Sunny Su herd
with brother Alvin, has been gone for many years but I still recall his quiet and level-headed
contributions as a director. Wayne had an uncanny knowledge of both people and cattle
breeding that was only appreciated by those who knew him well.
Nancy Schellinger (84-96) Now Nancy Sell, married to Gary of Sellcrest fame, Nancy is still
blessed with (most) of the energy and excitement she was noted for as a director. A tireless
promoter of the RWDCA and Red & Whites, she is remembered for her many, many years
of dedication to youth and for those great photos from Expo. She was very instrumental in
getting Red & Whites to the “big” show.
Max Beer (85-94) A steady hand guiding the RWDCA and a good personal friend from
Berne, Indiana, Max was president as well as director. The same age as the retired editor, I
trust we have gotten older, fatter, and dumber together. P.S. Keep the cats out of the house
and out of my car.
Louis Tennis (88-00) Long-time service as a director and president and always willing
to work for the Breed and Association, Louis devoted long hours to the RWDCA and was
instrumental in implementing ballot voting available to all members and to the effort to add
Reds to the Expo show.
Mark Yeazel (93-97) A hard-working director who is still active in RWDCA at Ja-Bob in Ohio.
Best remembered for his key role in USLGE and international promotion, and for his committee
work to produce the true-type painting by Bonnie Mohr.
Others
Gary Mayhew While serving a short time as president and director, Gary’s involvement
covers many, many years of guidance and work in too many areas to mention. His name
should be prominent in any Association history for all his years of dedicated service, much
of it “behind the scenes”.
Louis Prange A breeder known worldwide, he developed both Elm Park Farms and Trans-
World Genetics to be “household names” in Red around the globe. His many years as Premier
Breeder and Premier Exhibitor at WDE may never be surpassed. His long-time support of
the RWDCA includes two terms as director and, by far, the most advertising in The Red
Bloodlines in the history of the publication. His promotion of and dedication to Red & Whites
has opened doors around the world for all Red breeders.
Fred Hendricks The man behind SunShower Acres and many, many Red sires in A.I. including
the current #1 Lawn Boy, Fred has also served the RWDCA and promoted the breed in
many ways, often with little recognition. Known to many for his work with aAa and his many
sire syndicates, he continues to be involved with RWDCA as chair of the USLGE Committee
from his new home in Ohio.
Dr. Dave Selner A champion for Red & Whites and a 35 year supporter of the RWDCA,
Dave has served and continues to serve on key committees and in many areas…from writing
articles to providing guidance, he is always willing to give generously of his time. Dave’s
mating produced our cover sire, Lion King RC, a most deserving success story!
Doug Savage An Aussie living in Canada, Doug traveled the world as a young man, evaluating
all Red breeds as a project for the Australian Illawarra breed. Doug has a keen interest
in all Reds and also had the honor of judging the first Red show at WDE. He has contributed
much knowledge and several articles to The Red Bloodlines. Currently, he is a writer for
Holstein International.
Jean-Louis Schrago A promoter of Reds since the days of Triple Threat, he is well known
as the developer of the globally popular Jordan-Red. He has traveled the world tirelessly
to promote Reds for over 40 years and this Swiss native continues to offer unique Red
genetics through his company, ABC Genetics. Few have promoted Red & Whites for so
long to so many.
Tim Baumgartner Red & White breeder at Model Holsteins, early RWDCA classifier, director
for two terms and dedicated lover of the show ring, Tim has been involved in RWDCA and
Reds since he learned to walk. He was the driving force behind the All-American Contest, even
though he was quite young at the time. If you have been a recipient of one of the RWDCA
“people” awards, you can thank Tim. He recently wrote a book on show ring history. Few
can claim closer involvement with the breed over their entire life. Tim currently works out of
California as an aAa analyzer.
Joan Carpenter Without a doubt, one of the key people who has kept the Association strong
and successful. While breed publications tend to be quite visible and most appreciated, this
Editor did far less work than the secretary-treasurer. Many long hours, quite a few weekends
and over 33 years of dong her best to provide the services needed, and doing it well, must
be recognized. Her ability to keep the many facets of the RWDCA business running smoothly
tend to be overlooked and underappreciated. She deserves a great deal of credit for the
position of RWDCA today.
Transition Just a brief update on the transition process. Joan and I will remain available on
an “as needed” basis. Stephanie and Nicole have worked hard and learned a lot in a short
time. There will be “bumps in the road” as they continue to learn the many tasks involved.
Please have patience and give them your support and encouragement as the RWDCA
moves into a new era.
Thank You To all who have supported the RWDCA, we sincerely thank you. To all who
spoke kind words and presented gifts at the banquet, thank you. To our many friends in the
RWDCA, we hope to see you as we continue on a new path.

ALBRECHT DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD
Steve Rhodes, Harrisonburg, Virginia
Presented by Bill Hughes
A surprised Steve Rhodes receives the Albrecht Distinguished
Service Award from Bill Hughes
Presentation by Bill Hughes
Friends, it is my privilege to present to you the recipient of the Don Albrecht
Distinguished Service Award.
A charter member of the Southeast RWDCA, chairmen of the RWDCA
finance committee and owner of Staka Holstiens, Steve Rhodes receives this
year's Don Albrecht Distinguished Service Award. He ownes and operates
a 100+ cow dairy in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Steve and his wife Kathy have
two sons and two daughters. Having served as an RWDCA director for two
terms, Steve has proven his committment and service to the RWDCA.
It is my pleasure to introduce my friend and neighbor, Steve Rhodes.
LARRY MOORE MASTER BREEDER AWARD
Mark Yeazel, Eaton, Ohio
Presented by Fred Hendricks
Mark Yeazel receives the Larry Moore Master Breeder Award
Presentation by Fred Hendricks
It is my distinct privilege to present the 8th Master Breeder Award to a
very deserving individual, Mark Yeazel of Ja-Bob Holsteins, Eaton, Ohio.
In 1984 I fi rst visited Ja-Bob Holsteins. Through that visit, I gained an
appreciation for Mark Yeazel. I had heard about Sky-Hi Mars Helen and I
was curious about her Needle-Lane Jon son. That bull, Ja-Bob Hexagon-
Red, was syndicated by SunShower and leased to 21st Century Genetics,
now known as Genex.
Through that fi rst visit, I gained insight into an enterprising young man
who had his sights set on developing superior red genetics. Mark had set
a course to fi nd new and unique bloodlines for red cattle. Prior to locating
Helen, he acquired a red carrier daughter of Astronaut, Astro Rose. But,
as history has scribed, Helen became the superior foundation cow, not only
for Ja-Bob Holsteins, but the entire red population.
Mark learned about Helen’s full brother that was a known red carrier
through the Red Bloodlines. And while he could not test Helen to determine
if she was a carrier of the red gene, as DNA testing was not available at that
time, Mark decided that she was a worthy acquisition, even if she was a
non carrier. The Needle-Lane Jon son referenced earlier was her fi rst red
offspring.
Through Mark’s thoughtful breeding, Helen’s impact has spread worldwide.
There have been more than 100 bulls developed through A.I. that are direct
maternal descendants. In addition, there are now 84 excellent females in
eight countries descending through her maternal line. Helen is one of 19
cows on the Wisconsin Wall of Fame. Her impact on the red population is
immeasurable. And, it continues on.
The True Master Breeder is more than happening onto a special cow.
That distinction should refl ect someone who thinks outside the breeding
box. That person should recognize the unusual attributes of the animal,
breed her with complementary bulls and then effectively market the resulting
offspring. Mark is that rare breeder.
Mark is always searching for something different, that unique individual
that offers a new direction. Christof Baldus of Germany had this to say about
Mark: “Mark is very interested in red and polled. He is always interested in
doing matings that the mainstream breeder does not make.”
In the past, Ja-Bob Holsteins has been roughly 50% black and white.
Today, Mark is using only red and red carrier bulls. And, employing the
same out-of-the-box approach to breeding with bulls being incorporated
from around the world.
We often envision a Master Breeder as someone who develops
outstanding cattle. Mark has and continues to do just that. But, in my
opinion, the Master Breeder is more.
Mark gives credit for his God given talents to his parents, Bob and
Jane. They taught him good stewardship wherever he has been given
responsibility.
This responsibility begins with his wife, Joy, and their children. Mark is a
servant of God first and a family man next. Today, you will fi nd Mark and
his family working in their church or on the mission fi eld before you will fi nd
them at a function like this.
Over the years, Mark donated much of his time to this Association. He has
been a director. He served on many committees. He was also instrumental
in starting the Association’s long and fruitful affi liation with U.S. Livestock
Genetics Export, the program that helps promote U.S. Red Genetics around
the world.
When word began to circulate that Mark was to receive this honor,
commendations were shared for my inclusion in this presentation.
Mike Phillips, President and CEO of U.S. Livestock Genetics Export shared
these refl ections about Mark, “What always impressed me about Mark was
his commitment to the breed and to the Red & White organization. Under
Mark’s guidance, Red & White always had well thought out activities to
benefi t the breed. The Red & White breed has grown tremendously and I
am sure it is partly due to dedicated leaders like Mark that have bred good
cattle. I congratulate Mark as being recognized among his peers as a
Master Breeder.”
Many of you know Jean-Louis Schrago from Switzerland. John had these
comments: “Mark and his nice wife, Joy, did a lot of promotion of the Red
& White breed in the USA, but also Europe. As for ABC Genetics, Mark
will stay always as a special friend and a special breeder because he gave
me the opportunity to work with his best red bull, Ja-Bob Jordan. I am very
pleased that Mark is receiving the Master Breeder Award.”
The Executive Secretary of the Ohio Holstein Association, Steve Deam,
expressed his gratitude by saying, “Mark has helped educate me on not
only red genetics here in North America, but also throughout the world. His
educated approach to the many things he does takes not luck, but skill and
passion to make him a successful Master Breeder.”
With great pleasure, I recognize Mark Yeazel as recipient of the Red &
White Dairy Cattle Association’s eighth Master Breeder.
Award from Kim Morrill
Presentation by Kim Morrill
Daughter of Dwight and Betty Ann Swope, granddaughter of Bill and
Kate Hughes and soon to be Aunt, Billy Jo Swope is awarded this year's
Junior Breeder Award. Billy Jo was the 2007 Virginia State Dairy Princess
where she attended over sixty events throughout the year. She is also
active in 4-H, FFA, Jr. Holsteins, Brown Swiss Jr. activities and Red &
White activities. This year, Billy Jo will be traveling to Indianapolis, Indiana
for the 2008 National FFA Convention to participate in the Dairy Judging
contest. She was on the Virginia State 4-H judging team that competed at
Harrisburg, World Dairy Expo and Louisville last year. She is currently a
member of the RWDCA Junior Committee and is very active on the family
farm taking care of the cows and heifers. Billy Jo also enjoys showing and
has worked with several sales.
Buck & Carol Cobb receive the Keystone Award
Presentation by Steve Rhodes
This award is intended to recognize "The Grass Root" breeders who
are the real keystones of our organization. I know of no one better to
recieve this award than Lester "Buck" and Carol Cobb. Along with their
children, Marion, who is an integral part of the farm now, and Jackie, who
was helped for many years but now has moved about an hour away, they
have been members of the RWDCA since 1979 and have registered right
at 700 head. Their fi rst registered cow was Polly of Red Way born in
1973. They have hosted a Convention farm tour, Red & White Field Day,
FFA and 4-H judging practices, and every year have furnished a cow for
the milking contest at the local county league baseball game that our club
sponsors. They also classify on a regular basis.
The Southeast Red & White Dairy Cattle Association was formed in
1988 with Carol as Secretary and Treasurer. She is still doing a good job
today. My twelve years as president of SERWDCA was made a lot easier
working with her as she would always get the little things done.
It was around 1975 and I was just out of high school and had an
interest in the Red & Whites. I was waiting to cross Route 33 just west
of Harrisonburg when down the road came a red pick up truck with a bug
defl ector that said Red & White Dairy. I didn't know who they were at the
time, but our paths have crossed many times since.
When you talk about the Cobbs, you have to mention Rockingham
County Fair. They started showing in the early 80's and always have displayed
a huge show string. They have always been the Prmier Breedeer
and Exhibitor for the Red & Whites and have had so many Grand Champions
that they have lost track. In the recent years at this show there
have been more Red & Whites than Black & Whites due to the infl uence
of the Cobb Family.
It is with great joy and admiration that I present the Keystone Award
2008 to Buck and Carol Cobb.
Thank you to Naomi Yoder for making the
Red & White Quilt that brought $675 and was
donated to John & Joan Carpenter from:
Calvin Schrock, Luke Coblentz, Paul Yoder,
Steve & Kathy Rhodes and John Burket.
Thank you for the 2008 RWDCA National Convention
Hagerstown, Maryland
First a sad thank you to John & Joan Carpenter. This Convention "The
New Beginning" was in their honor. One day-one night is not enough to say
enough thank yous for making the RWDCA what it is today. I hope to see
them much more as a friend, not just at business functions.
Second, "The New Beginning" is the great job Matt Lawrence did on
his fi rst major sale. Matt is a fellow Pennsylvania Red & White breeder and
did a fi rst-class job on the Convention sale. This lineup was the best I have
seen from the first to the last one sold. Great animals!
A huge thank you to "git-r-done" Jake Skinner, President of the Mason-
Dixon RWDCA. We were lucky the last 2 months after his back surgery, he
could not work on the farm, so he and Tina had the time to get all the sponsors
and caterers. All the time consuming details to make the Convention look
easy. Almost single handidly, Jake did 90% of the Convention.
A big thank you to Donna Myers for organizing the area bus tours. I
knew if I could talk Donna and Jason into taking charge of the farm tours, I
did not think or worry about it again. I knew it would be done and done right.
I had many people say that they had fun and never say so many great Red
& Whites in one day.
The Washington County Ag. Center, where the Convention was held,
was perfect. Even the weather was perfect. Great facilities and Norm, the "do
anything for us" maintenance man, was a real compliment to their center.
A special thank you to the office staff and "The New Beginning" Executive
Secretary and Editor - Nicole and Stephanie Stout who thought of many and
took care of many little details that go into organization of events, meetings
and banquets of the convention.
Congratulations to Dr. Tom Mercuro for having a gracious and informative
staff to show people the "Greats" of the Red & White breed and for lunch! I
believe we are lucky to have such a dedicated and cutting-edge practitioner
work with the elite of Red & Whites.
And of course, for my "nitch" in the RWDCA, I cannot say thank you
enough for the people who purchased tickets for the scholarship raffl e calf
and other prizes. The winners this year 2008 for 2-$1,000 scholarships went
Convention Letters
40
to David Wilson and Samantha Garst. The response has been so favorable.
Next year, there may be 3 or 4 $1,000 scholarships to give out. College farm
kids always need the funds for their education.
The committee is not trying to get a lot of money saved up in the fund,
and we believe in giving the money right back to the kids who need it. Next
year we will need someone to donate another calf and gifts for the scholarship
drawing. Remember it is a 501 C-3, totally tax deductible.
Next year, 2009, the Midwest RWDCA is hosting the Convention in
Belvidere, Illinois "Red & Whites Shine in 2009" July 22-25. I hate to brag,
but the Mason-Dixon RWDCA raised the bar for them to have a memorable
Convention and sale. I know they will meet the challenge and will make me
eat my words, but that is why I love the Red & White people. It's all fun!!
Sincerely,
Dana Erway
Convention Wrap-up
I'd like to take a minute to thank all of the convention sponsors, also all
who helped me at the convention. I want to thank Matt Lawrence and the sale
staff for putting together a great line-up of Red genetics for you to invest in.
I also want to welcome Stephanie and Nicole Stout as the new managers of
the RWDCA. A big thank you to John and Joan Carpenter for all they have
done over the many years I've known them.
In closing, I hope all who attended our "New Beginnings" National
Convention enjoyed themselves.
Thank you,
Jake Skinner
encouragement of applicants for the scholarship program.
Dana Erway reported for the Show Committee. He reported that after sending
out a listing of suggested judges for approved shows, the shows felt that it was a
nice gesture but opted to select the judges themselves. There are 11 sanctioned
Red & White shows currently. John Burket moved to table the Jr. Show Proposal
from the April meeting. There was discussion at the previous meeting to include
identifi cation of black-red animals.
RWDCA RESERVE
FUND UPDATE
Our last Reserve Fund Update one year ago
showed a balance of $64,132. Our latest report
shows a total of $74,547, an increase of
over $10,000. The goal of the Reserve Fund is
$100,000 and the Reserve Fund Committee is
planning new fund-raisers to keep the fund growing.
The Young Sire Sampling Program continues
to provide signifi cant funding, with 100% of the
$50 fee per bull going directly to the Reserve
Fund. This very successful program provides a
list of the latest sires for sampling with complete
details, provides a $1 discount to breeders who
register daughters and builds this important fund.
See page 18 for the current YSSIP list. New to
the September 2008 listing - young sires enrolled
in the YSSIP will receive a 5% discount when
advertised in the 2009 Red Sire Showcase.
A new project that the Reserve Fund has taken
on this year was the Embryo Shuffl e. We greatly
appreciate all of the donors and buyers of the
embryos. Thank you! The Embryo Shuffle brought
in $12,790 for the Reserve Fund.
Take time to read over the list of donors, including
thirteen who have given $1,000 or more, and
our #1 donor, Ed Peck, April Day Holsteins, who
has surpassed the $5,000 Diamond Donor level!
A sincere thank you to each of the donors listed,
as well as those individuals whose small contributions
have added to our total.
Make 2008 the year your farm or company is
added to our donor list and help the fund reach
$100,000. . and, more importantly, help guarantee
the future of the RWDCA.
by Kim Morrill
Nancy Sell, her daughter Wendy and Kim Morrill traveled to the
Holland National Show in June to represent the RWDCA. The trip was
very enjoyable and were able to meet many Dutch breeders and talk with
various industry people. Throughout the trip, their goal was to promote
U.S. Red genetics and determine how the RWDCA could expand in the
European market.
NRM SHOW
Two days of the trip was spent at the NRM Show visiting with breeders
and viewing the show. Daughter classes were shown on the fi rst day
with AI companies bringing out 5 daughters from one bull and the judge
would select the best one of the group. For Red genetics, Talent, Tequilla-
Red and Kia (a Dutch bull) groups were represented. The Type Show
was on the second day where milking cows were shown. No heifers were
shown at this National Show, these are left for smaller district and often
youth shows.
Following the NRM Show, time was spent sight seeing and taking
in the tourist attrations. We drove south to Brussels, Belgium. There, we
took in many of the sights and bought chocolates to take back to the US.
We also visited Rotterdam and Gouda.
FARM VISITS
Our final day in Holland was spent with Marieke Keijzer, a representative
from World-Wide Sires, touring dairy operations. The fi rst farm we
visited was Marieke's family farm where they milk mostly Black & Whites
with a few red factored animals. The cattle are housed in a freestall barn
and do not go out to graze. The second farm we visited was the home
of the Black & White champion from the NRM Show. This farm does
extensive embryo transfer work and has a seperate show barn. The last
farm that we visted that day was an intensive grazing farm with mainly
Black & Whites.
There was much excitement in Red genetics and a great amount of
interest in US breeding programs and genetic goals.
