As teachers we need to ensure that 

children enjoy learning because, above 

all, we want them to become lifelong 

learners. I owe a special debt of 

gratitude to many 6, 7 and 8 year olds 

I have taught who were struggling to 

learn to read. They helped me to discover 

that when rule talk is translated into brief 

little fictions to explain phonic facts, the 

facts stick – and the children love it. In my experience, enjoying 

learning really does produce lifelong learners. 

I am delighted that teachers have responded with so much 

enthusiasm and positive results using the new American 

Step-by-Step Letterland Teacher’s Guides for Kindergarten and 

Grade 1. I am even more delighted because this year sees the 

completion of our Step-by-Step Teacher’s Guide for Grade 2. This 

will round off the work that Stamey Carter (Veteran Reading

What is Letterland?

Letterland is a unique, phonics-based approach to 

teaching reading, writing and spelling to 3-8 year olds. Its
