New for 2011
Based on the best current research and input from schools of teachers in pilot classrooms, we are
pleased to present the American editions of the Letterland program – Kindergarten through Grade Two!
All new
U.S. editions!
Teacher’s Guide - Step-by-Step Kindergarten, Volumes 1 & 2
This program succeeds with even the weakest students, not least because its Phonemic Awareness Fast Track
offers an early immersion for a-z letter sounds. It skillfully coordinates daily guidelines for whole class, small
group and independent work with ‘listen and think’ activities, fun poems, take-home decodable booklets, and
much more. A highly effective Assessment and early Intervention strand gives better results for all abilities.
(8.5” x 11”) Code: TGK1
• Frequent teacher-child interaction maintains
positive engagement and effective learning.
• Games and rhymes engage children’s
attention, imaginations and thinking
processes.
• An imaginative story logic transforms all the
relevant phonic facts and rules into
memorable similies, metaphors and fables.
This new Grade One program enables you to follow the systematic Letterland
sequence, or match the sequence of your curriculum, it’s that flexible! It
also reduces your planning time with specific day-by-day lesson plans. It is
designed to bring your at-risk readers up to grade level and sharpen the skills
of your high achievers.
• Diagnostic words help you decide if your children are ready to move onto
the next unit.
Teacher’s Guide - Step-by-Step Grade Two, Volumes 1 & 2
The new Grade Two program provides fresh support for your children’s journey to full literacy. Innovative
strategies put a creative edge on your phonics and word structure teaching. A clever train analogy for the Six
Syllable Types makes it easy and fun to show your children how to predict the value of the vowels in thousands
of previously unknown single and multi-syllable words.
Welcome & Contents
Learning is fun with Letterland!
Contents
As teachers we need to ensure that
children enjoy learning because, above
all, we want them to become lifelong
learners. I owe a special debt of
gratitude to many 6, 7 and 8 year olds
I have taught who were struggling to
learn to read. They helped me to discover
that when rule talk is translated into brief
little fictions to explain phonic facts, the
facts stick – and the children love it. In my experience, enjoying
learning really does produce lifelong learners.
I am delighted that teachers have responded with so much
enthusiasm and positive results using the new American
Step-by-Step Letterland Teacher’s Guides for Kindergarten and
Grade 1. I am even more delighted because this year sees the
completion of our Step-by-Step Teacher’s Guide for Grade 2. This
will round off the work that Stamey Carter (Veteran Reading
Teacher and co-author) and I have been doing over the last
3 years to produce a complete Letterland package. May the
resulting Letterland resources provide you with many years of
teaching enjoyment and success.
What is Letterland?
Introduction
Structured Learning
Letterland is a unique, phonics-based approach to
teaching reading, writing and spelling to 3-8 year olds. Its
information-rich Letterland characters transform plain
black letter shapes into child-friendly pictogram characters,
who live in an imaginary place called Letterland.
By translating the full range of dry phonic facts into
engaging stories, children are motivated to listen, to
think and to learn. These stories explain letter shapes and
sounds, allowing children to progress quickly to word
building, reading and writing.
Multi-sensory learning
rhymes,
Man!”
Speaking & Listening
Simple stories about the
Letterland characters and
their lives cue letter sounds,
develop listening & speaking
skills, strengthen phonemic
awareness and expand
children’s vocabulary.
Letter Shapes
Built-in visual and verbal cues
ensure correct letter
formation, provide reasons
for capitals and reduce
confusions like b/d, p/q, s/z,
n/u, m/w.
Word Building
Blending & segmenting all
through words is
introduced very early on,
covering blends, digraphs,
trigraphs, advanced and
irregular spellings.
Research based
live spelling
The use of characters and actions to teach phonics is
supported by scientific research. The Letterland system
is also in line with research on memory and the way we
learn. Each Letterland character has a personality and lives
in a realistic environment filled with alliterative objects.
By integrating phonics with life experience, they provide
children with a systematic and motivating framework
for learning all 44 sounds and their spellings and for
developing full literacy.
Advanced Spelling
Stories about the Letterland
characters and their
interactions give children a
friendly logic for remembering
all 44 letter sounds and their
major spellings. Actions
reinforce letter sounds.
Multi-sensory Learning
Children associate letters,
sounds and words through
visual, auditory, kinesthetic
and tactile senses (VAKT).
Techniques include ‘action
tricks’, ‘rubber band stretching’,
the ‘rollercoaster’ trick and
‘finger sounding’.
DR DENNIS MOLFESE Ph.D., Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, University of Louisville, Kentucky:
“Very clearly, Letterland offers a systematic program of instruction for alphabetic and phonological knowledge that
is critical for the early stages of reading development. The materials are well designed and highly attractive to
children, serving to motivate them to spend more and more time learning to recognize and name the letters of the
alphabet as well as learn the letter sounds AND develop their rhyming and rime skills. Researchers across the
world have repeatedly found that these components are the literal building blocks that lead to reading success.”

REBECCA H. FELTON Ph.D. Reading Consultant, Author, Dyslexia
Researcher and former Faculty member, Neuropsychology
Department, Bowman Gray School of Medicine:
“Many children who are at risk for reading difficulties have serious
problems learning the names and sounds for the letters of the
alphabet. Letterland, with its engaging characters, stories, songs,
gestures for each letter, provides a rich and effective system of
cues for lettersound associations. Use of these multiple cues as
part of the Letterland reading program should ensure that all
students develop mastery in this critical component of reading.”
