New at <strong>Northwestern</strong><br />
Two new directors began their<br />
positions this summer.<br />
Patrick Hummel joined <strong>Northwestern</strong>’s<br />
staff as director of residence<br />
life after seven years at Calvin <strong>College</strong>,<br />
where he served most recently as<br />
assistant dean of residence life. A<br />
graduate of Taylor University, Hummel<br />
earned a Master of Divinity degree from<br />
Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary.<br />
He replaces Eric Anderson, who is<br />
a financial planner for Van Rooyen<br />
Financial Group in Orange City.<br />
Tom Truesdell ’01 is <strong>Northwestern</strong>’s<br />
new director of academic support. The<br />
college’s writing center coordinator last<br />
year, he previously<br />
worked as a writing<br />
center specialist at<br />
the <strong>College</strong> of lake<br />
County in Grayslake,<br />
Ill., and earned a<br />
master’s degree in<br />
writing from DePaul<br />
University. He<br />
replaces Patti Thayer,<br />
who retired in May.<br />

Double Play<br />
<strong>Northwestern</strong> baseball players<br />
and coaches held a baseball camp<br />
and did work projects during an<br />
11-day service project in Romania<br />
and Moldova in August.<br />
Working with For God’s<br />
Children International (FGCI), a<br />
Senior Jake Jansen was among the<br />
Raiders who developed relationships with<br />
Moldovan baseball campers.<br />
ministry based in Council Bluffs,<br />
Iowa, the NWC contingent<br />
conducted a camp in Nisporeni,<br />
Moldova, for 30 kids ages 10-18.<br />
After each session, the Red Raider<br />
players taught a character lesson<br />
based on an event from the Bible.<br />
The group also painted and<br />
did a variety of other projects on<br />
the FGCI property.<br />
“This trip was a great opportunity<br />
for our guys to obey God’s<br />
call to love your neighbor as<br />
yourself,” Coach Brian Wede<br />
says. “We had the opportunity to<br />
reach out and spread the love God<br />
has given us.”<br />
