The Bureau of Justice Statistics began the Law Enforcement Management and Administrative Statistics (LEMAS) program in 1987 with a survey of the Nation's State and local law enforcement agencies. An expanded version of the survey was completed in 1990. This volume, the first of its kind, presents 1990 data provided by over 600 State and local law enforcement agencies employing 100 or more officers. Data on personnel, expenditures, salaries, operations, equipment, special programs, and drug enforcement activities are presented for each agency. The full representation of the Nation's larger State and local law enforcement agencies and the completeness of the data presented Indicate the tremendous cooperation BJS has received from the law enforcement community in connection with the LEMAS survey. In turn, we hope this volume is a useful resource for these agencies, as well as others with Interests related to law enforcement. Steven D.
