Springsports<br />
Amy Larson turns a double play in a GPAC conference tournament game against Midland Lutheran. The Raiders finished the<br />
year at the regional tourney with a 32-19 record.<br />
Baseball<br />
• Set a school record with<br />
37 wins and won<br />
<strong>Northwestern</strong>’s first-ever<br />
regional championship,<br />
advancing to a superregional<br />
showdown with<br />
eighth-ranked Bellevue<br />
University.<br />
• Finished 37-18 overall.<br />
• Placed third in the Great<br />
Plains Athletic Conference<br />
(GPAC) with a 14-8 mark.<br />
• Pitcher Mihai Burlea (junior,<br />
Botosani, Romania)<br />
received NAIA All-<br />
American honorable mention<br />
recognition and was<br />
named the regional and<br />
conference pitcher of the<br />
year. Also joining him on<br />
the all-regional team were<br />
designated hitter Michael<br />
Janssen (senior, Ackley,<br />
Iowa) and shortstop Grant<br />
Wall (sophomore,<br />
Mountain Lake, Minn.).<br />
Wall was the GPAC player<br />
of the year.<br />
• Wall was a conference<br />
player of the week, and<br />
Dusty Meyn (senior,<br />
Boyden, Iowa) was a GPAC<br />
pitcher of the week.<br />
• The Raiders won the<br />
Clearwater Christian<br />
<strong>College</strong> tournament over<br />
spring break. Codie<br />
Zeutenhorst (junior,<br />
Maurice, Iowa) was named<br />
tourney MVP. Also named<br />
to the all-tourney team<br />
were Wall, Jake Jansen<br />
(sophomore, Oak Harbor,<br />
Wash.), Jake Koerselman<br />
(senior, Hospers, Iowa)<br />
and Austin Malone (sophomore,<br />
San Diego).<br />
Softball<br />
• Advanced to the regional<br />
championships, finishing<br />
with a 32-19 record.<br />
• Tied for second in the<br />
GPAC with an 18-6 mark.<br />
• Megan McHugh (senior,<br />
Missouri Valley, Iowa) was<br />
a GPAC pitcher of the<br />
week. She became<br />
<strong>Northwestern</strong>’s all-time<br />
leader in strikeouts, finishing<br />
with 480, surpassing<br />
the previous record of 393<br />
set by Barb (Bahrke ’80)<br />
Hansen.<br />
Track and field<br />
• Andrew Ortmeier (senior,<br />
Osmond, Neb.) was<br />
named an All-American<br />
after placing fourth in the<br />
javelin at the national<br />
championships in Fresno,<br />
Calif. He also competed in<br />
the discus, hammer throw<br />
and shot put. Also competing<br />
at nationals were<br />
Nick Fynaardt (senior,<br />
New Sharon, Iowa) in the<br />
discus and shot put,<br />
Michael Ortmeier (junior,<br />
Osmond, Neb.) in the<br />
decathlon, Laura Jacobson<br />
(junior, Galva, Iowa) in the<br />
800-meter run, Amy<br />
Katsma (junior, Boise,<br />
Idaho) in the shot put and<br />
Sarah Storm (sophomore,<br />
Sheldon, Iowa) in the<br />
marathon.<br />
• Fynaardt won the GPAC<br />
title in the shot put and<br />
placed first in both the<br />
shot put and the discus at<br />
the Sioux City Relays. The<br />
women’s 4x400 relay<br />
team—consisting of<br />
Jacobson, Jess Regan (junior,<br />
Council Bluffs, Iowa),<br />
Kristen Becker (senior,<br />
Osage, Iowa) and Megan<br />
Harding (senior,<br />
Newcastle, Neb.)—also<br />
took first place at Sioux<br />
City.<br />
• The men’s and women’s<br />
teams placed seventh at<br />
the conference meet.<br />
Men’s golf<br />
• Placed seventh at the conference<br />
meet.<br />
Women’s golf<br />
• Finished fourth at the<br />
regional meet.<br />
