The granite massif of Aiako Harria
shapes the most characteristic
silhouette of the landscape in the
populated region which extends from the
East of Donosita-San Sebastián-Irun.
Its unmistakable outline is also remarkable
because of its height which, although
moderate in absolute terms (833 m) is
considerable if we take account of the fact
that it is so near the coast (less than 10 km
away as the crow flies).
The Aiako Harria (the Basque name for Peña
de Aia) massif stands in both Gipuzkoa and
Navarre (it marks the boundary between
the two provinces), and one of its far ends
also lies on the border with the French side
of the Basque Country, known as Iparralde
in Basque. In fact, the north-eastern part of
the park reaches as far as the river Bidasoa.
Among the mountains in the Basque
Autonomous Community, the Aiako Harria
massif enjoys the singularity of standing at
the end of the Pyrenean Cordillera.We will
no longer find plutonic rock (granite and its
metamorphic aureole) towards the west on
leaving behind the Aiako Harria and its area
of influence.We are therefore talking about
a geological singularity in the context of our
province, i.e., the fact that the oldest land
dates from the Primary or Paleozoic Era.

This rocky mass of solidified magma has
given rise to veins of different metals which
have been exploited since very ancient
times, some since Roman times, and the
number of wells and mining galleries dotted
over the massif can be counted in dozens. It
has been calculated that there is a total
tunnel length of some 15-18 km.

The coast forms a part of the neighbouring
scenery, with in the foreground the bay of
Txingudi, an important enclave on the
migration paths of aquatic birds; the towns
of Hondarribia, Irún and Hendaye, Mount
Jaizkibel, the Oiartzun valley... But the

Hill-walking:
There are several well-indicated
paths leading up to the three
summits of the Peña de Aia. The
most common way is through
Aritxulegi pass.
The little Aiztondo river is
particularly interesting with its
waterfall of over 100 m in height.

The two highest summits are: Irumugarrieta (806 m) and
Txurrumurru (821 m) and Erroilbide (834 m)
Bilbao-Behobia motorway: Oiartzun or Irún exits. From
Oiartzun, y the subsidiary roads to Irún (GI-3631), Lesaka
(GI-3420), and the reservoir of Artikutza (GI-3633), and
also from Irún by the abovementioned road.
The GI-3410 from Hernani to Goizueta and the Irún-
Pamplona road via Belate run along the north and south
boundaries of the park.

through a landscape of summits and
passes along the whole boundary with
Navarre:Aritxulegi, Bianditz,Aldura,
Urdaburu, etc.
If Aiako Harria stands out for its rocks,
although we will still find the occasional
impressive forest at the bottom of its
gullies, such as the Endara oak wood or
the Oieleku beech forest the area is
generally home to vast forests of both
autochthonous (beech on the highest
areas, oak further down, or the oak and
beech trees at the Añarbe source) and
allogenic trees.
Water from the terrain of this Nature
Reserve runs off into three rivers with
independent basins: that is, from north
to south, the rivers Bidasoa, Oiartzun
and Urumea. Mentioning the Bidasoa
reminds us of the salmon that make
their way up the river each year to
spawn.
But the park contains other remarkable
fauna and flora.To give an example of
one group, we could quote the vulture
colony on Aiako Harria, and the
extremely rare endemic plant related to
very dark and shady earth and
environments: Soldanella
villosa, which we will find
again in the nearby
and likewise
protected valley of
Leitzaran.
The most
common way up
to the summits
of Aiako Harria is
from Pikoketa,
leaving from the
towns of either
Oiartzun or Irún.
From Irún we can
also get to
Bianditz pass,
located at the centre of this
Nature Reserve and which
offers an excellent panoramic
view.This is moreover an area
rich in megalithic monuments. In
fact the same can be said of the
whole area, where over 10 stone
circles have been listed, as have
no less than seven dolmens and
the occasional tumulus; in another
part of the park,Aizpitarte, there
are moreover important prehistoric
remains.
PASAI DONIBANE
The lovely fishermen’s houses found in this
pretty village give a special feeling to the area,
which is best reached by ferry from Pasaia San
Pedro. A walk along San Juan’s single street
brings us to one of the most charming squares
on the coast, that of Santiago.
TXINGUDI,ORNITHOLOGICAL PARK
This wetland stands at the mouth of the river
Bidasoa and is a magnificent spot for watching
the birds that greatly increase in number at
certain times of the year.
HONDARRIBIA
A predominantly tourist area which, due to its
strategic location, has an extremely interesting
historic past. In its old town we will find several
buildings of great artistic value: the Palace
of Carlos V,now a Parador Nacional,the Parish
Church, Zuloaga Mansion, etc
GUADALUPE
The spurs of Mount Jaizkibel house a sanctuary
dedicated to the Virgen de Guadalupe. The
surrounding views over Txingudi Bay are simply
breathtaking.
MEGALITHIC MONUMENTS
The Aiako Harria Nature Reserve has been a
human settlement since prehistoric times.
Dozens of megalithic monuments have been
listed,as have important prehistoric cave sites.
