Society Ltd
Company No: 5065370
President’s Letter
I HOPE you all had a Happy Christmas and a joyous New Year.
You will all have the chance to read the Minutes of the recent AGM, published on pages 20 to
23. The proposals from the floor were completely unsupported and therefore will proceed no
further.
Several ideas were put forward as to improving attendance of the National Championships,
which we will be exploring further in the near future.
The Society is progressing well in all areas. Online renewals are imminent, and this should
progress to booking into the National Champs if all goes well.
Our financial position has never been better and under Mike Cobban's continued guidance
should continue to progress well.
The 3D stock is also continuing to improve and is one of the Society’s finest assets. Dave
Fuller and a group of volunteers recently undertook the annual stocktake, ordering new
Rinehart 3Ds to replace any shot out targets.
Although Rinehart are the most expensive 3Ds, they have proven themselves to be the most
durable of any available.
The newsletter is of exceptional quality and many non members who read it do not believe
that it is put together to such a high standard by a volunteer. So well done Carol.
All the officers of the committee carry out their chosen roles to the best of their ability.
But the same people will not be there forever and we need members to consider stepping up
and putting themselves forward for committee vacancies as they arise.
Andrew Knott has finished his term of office as General Secretary without any replacement
stepping forward to fill the vacancy.
Although Mike Cobban has agreed to stand in as Acting General Secretary, this can only continue
for a very short term.
I would like to thank Andy for his guidance and hard work throughout his term of office, and
wish him all the very best for the future. Indeed, he will be a hard act to follow.
Happy New Year and good shooting .
Nigel Bell.
NFAS President
Editor’s Note
HAPPY New Year to you all, and I hope you all have a fun and
productive year ahead of you.
Did you get everything you wanted this Christmas? Did Santa
put a smile on your face on Christmas morning? Yes? Then why
not share your excitement with us and write your story for us all
to read. And don’t forget to add a photo too. So get writing and
before you know it you could be included in this next bit...
I would like to extend my thanks again to all my regular contributors,
including (in no particular order) David Hastings, Moira
Hodgkinson, George Hampson, Stu Bradley, G S Godsell, Mark
Jones. I don’t believe I gave you justice at the recent AGM so I
would like to take this opportunity to thank you all again. I really
do not know what I would do without you all, and I look forward
to continuing to work with you all in 2013.
The President’s Trophy
THE President’s Trophy is awarded annually to a person (or people) who has
contributed to the Society above and beyond what can normally be expected
of a member.
If anyone could be classed as putting in continuous effort above and beyond,
it is this year’s recipient.
This gentleman has been involved in putting on no less than seven Champs
courses. He was one of a group of three coaches who completely revamped the
Coach Training structure of the Society.
Obituary
Peter Shorrock
Peter Shorrock sadly passed away peacefully on 6th December 2012 after losing his brave battle with lung
cancer.
Apart from his family, archery was the love of his life. Peter developed his love of the sport back in the
‘60s when he and a fellow worker at Courthalls Weaving Mill became interested and started to attend various
archery fairs together.
This interest progressed to them meeting other fellow archers like Ray Bamber, who I am sure you will
have all heard of at some point or other.
Ray introduced Peter to the Preston Archery Club, Chingle Hall, Goosnargh, and it wasn’t long before Peter
became a fully fledged member. His passion for the sport grew over the years and he joined other clubs,
including Derwynd at Tockholes, where he
remained a member for many years.
As Peter got older he became an independent
archer and shot at shoots all
over Lancashire, Cheshire and Yorkshire
where he met lots of people, with many
becoming very good friends.
Peter fought his illness with dignity and
fortitude and he never gave up. His
determination to continue shooting helped
him through, and he still attended shoots
up until early 2012.
From all Peter’s family, thank you - we
were overwhelmed by all the support and
kind messages we received from fellow
archers and friends from clubs all around
the country.
It made a sad time more bearable.
Thank you all so much and God bless you
all.
REBELLION ARCHERS, Pensagillas Park, St Austell, Cornwall,
would like to apologise to those who booked into our “Penguin”
Christmas shoot, which was cancelled when four feet of water
engulfed our course. That’s nature for you!
The Penguin shoot will now take place on 24th February, having
been re-laid on new, previously unshot ground. The number of
targets has also been increased to approximately 36.
This will be our first shoot, so please show some support as it
is our intention to expand the NFAS further into Cornwall. We
certainly need more clubs down here!
Rebellion Archers
SENLAC FIELD BOWMEN - When Senlac members go to NFAS
open shoots they are asked by a lot of archers why they are not
putting open shoots on any more.
The answer to why we stopped putting on shoots was because
of the low attendance of visiting archers, which made it very
frustrating and uneconomical.
The low attendance could be because of the geographical position
of Senlac (six miles north of Hastings), together with poor
road access and the time it takes for visiting archers to get
back home.
Although there is not much we can do, we apologise for this,
and we now are thinking of putting on an invitation shoot in 2013
to celebrate our 40th year.
This will be called the Senlac Challenge, open for all interested
archers who want to have a good day’s shoot competing against
the course layers and themselves.
Be warned, we have a reputation of putting on one of the
toughest and interesting courses, and with this in mind the
course will be designed by Steve Joy, who will have you shooting
in unorthodox positions and from in and out of cover, as you
would if you were hunting - definitely not for the faint hearted!
The shoot will be in our new little wood, still six miles north of
8
Hastings.
So now for the details of The Senlac Challenge:
Open to all NFAS members;
Maximum of thirty archers per invitation;
Maximum four archers per group;
The course will be 2x29 targets, shooting two arrows at each
target;
Or maybe three times round!
There will be NO class in the bow styles, only of which gender
you are;
Metal and carbon shooters will shoot from the wasp and red
peg, wooden arrows shooters (AFB, HT and LB) will shoot from
the red and white pegs, Primitive will shoot from the white and
blue pegs;
Sorry NO crossbows (Forestry land);
There will be NO catering on the day and a no break on the
course, only tea or coffee (bring your own food).
So now we would need to know if there is any interest in this
challenge before we go ahead.
Please contact Steve Joy, email saj1for20@hotmail.com
Steve Joy
Senlac Field Bowmen
HIGH CROSS FIELD ARCHERS have negotiated a better
arrangement for the catering in 2013.
As any archers who attended the shoot in October will know,
the midday catering was a bit of a fiasco, for which the landlady
apologises. This was in part due to a staff member who is no
longer in employment.
The deal we have with the farm is that we can use the land
for free, but they do the catering and take the profits from
that. This resulted in some fantastic food but also rather steep
prices compared to what NFAS members are used too.
Our plan for 2013 is to have a tea tent out on the course
which will provide cheap and cheerful basics which archers are
more used to and at lower prices. The tea tent will mainly be
open during the shoot itself. At the beginning and end of the
shoot you can still go into the farm shop and cafe for breakfast
or tea and cakes in the afternoon.
We are hoping this will resolve the holdups on the course and
at the same time allow archers the opportunity to warm up or
partake in some quality local farm produce.
The toilet block on the campsite now has planning permission,
but there have been outrageously expensive quotes to build it,
so that is unlikely to be available next year; but you never know.
We have explored another section of the quarry which was
extremely overgrown and by the spring we hope to have cleared
a way through. This will enable the possibility for more targets
with some brilliant alternative shots. It also allows better circulation
coming out of the quarry.
Please take the time to come and join us at High Cross if you
can make it to the 2013 shoots. Follow the signs from the Fosse
Way to the farm shop. We are only about five miles from
Cirencester, Gloucs, on the A417 Gloucester/Swindon road. We
are very easy to find.
Also you may camp on site by arrangement with the farm,
quoting NFAS if it is a shoot weekend or at other times camp
anyway.
Ed’s Note: Check out Steve Rand’s view of High Cross on the
NFAS has given me an interest outside of work,
many new friends and the chance to enjoy some
of Britain’s great woodlands.
In return, I trained as a club coach and was
subsequently invited to try out as a Coach
Trainer.
I choose to shoot AFB at Spirit of Sherwood
Archery Club (the home of many champions – oh
yes it is).
If I had more time to practice and attend
more shoots I would no doubt be a better
archer and win some medals, but my main aim is
having fun with like minded people.
The opportunity arose for me to put more into
the NFAS by applying for the role of Safety
Advisor. As this is what I do for a living, it
seemed a logical step for me. As a Health and
Safety professional I have been responsible for
up to 35 sites and nearly 800 people across the
10
Paul Colley
NFAS Safety Advisor
UK. I have worked in manufacturing for most of
my life in plastics, automotive electronics and,
lately, the UK’s largest timber engineering company.
Add to that 14 years in an RAF uniform
(six years full time and eight years as RAF
VR(T)) and my experience and maturity hopefully
starts to show.
Over the next two or three months I will be
reviewing what is already in place in the NFAS
from a safety point of view and making any suggestions
for improvement. I also hope to generate
a number of useful ‘generic’ risk assessments/safe
systems of work that clubs can take
and, following review, make their own.
At home are my wife of 34 years Sue and our
daughter Leana (both horsey people so no shooting
partners there!). I also have a son, Scott,
who has blessed me with three fine grandchildren
with his wife Claire.
I ride a 21 year old Honda CBR 1000f motorbike
and collect autographed aircraft covers
(envelopes with pictures basically).
My two favourite covers are one signed by
Douglas Bader and another signed by my hero,
Chuck Yeager (go on, Google him).
I don’t think it likely that I will meet all 5000
plus members of the NFAS, but I can be contacted
via the NFAS e mail system on
safety@nfas.net if required.
YOUR LETTERS
Dear Editor,
I WOULD like to echo Larry
Baker's question about the
Flemish loose.
I was first introduced to this
loose whilst on the society’s
beginners course, and I found it
suited me better than the
Mediterranean loose. I got used
to using it and then found I could
only legally use it in the barebow
class.
I would like to shoot AFB, but
my choice of loose prohibits me
from doing so, which is frustrating
.
I have seen references to the
Flemish loose in times past being
considered a variant of the
Mediterranean loose.
Proposing a rule change seems a
bit daunting to a fairly new
archer like myself. To be honest,
as a new archer, how to reword a
rule to cover all the possible
ways of interpretation is flummoxing
because I haven't been in
archery long enough to have the
experience and confidence to
feel like I'm making a fully
informed change which would
benefit the society as a whole.
Is a rule change proposal at
next year’s AGM the only way
this loose can be made legal for
the traditional styles, or is there
another way forward?
High Cross Field Archers
- 21st October
I HAD never been to this club for
a shoot before. Mind you, it is a
three hour drive for me!
It’s at Chedworth, over near
12
The Editor reserves the right to edit all correspondence.
Cirencester. It was very easy to
get too and very easy to find.
I'd got there quite early, as is
my wont, arriving to a friendly
greeting from the marshals there.
The parking facilities in the
farmyard were very good and
there is a farm shop and cafeteria
right by the car park.
The cafeteria is operated by the
farm and is open to archers on the
day. The food was very good but a
little bit expensive compared to
other shoots.
Unfortunately, on this occasion,
there was a bit of a problem in the
kitchen which meant delays in getting
food. But I'm assured this
was a one-off situation that
shouldn't happen again.
Registration was quick and easy
and that is done in the cafe too!
They have an interesting ground
to shoot over, with varying terrain
from open field shots to fairly
close woodland. Some of this is in
an old quarry where some kind of
stone was once mined. There were
some really good shots in this section.
Overall, there was some nice
course setting here, making good
use of the features available on
the ground. 36 targets, mixed 3Ds
and faces, all well placed I
thought.
There was also a moving target
on a zip wire, one arrow only.
Historically, I do quite well on
these, but not this day. I missed it
by a country mile! I had a dose of
target panic for some reason, and
loosed way too early. I've experienced
this on maybe ten targets in
all the time I've been shooting. It
happens at the point of loose, and
there's nothing you can do about
it.
Anyway, another really different
shot was at a 3D duck mounted
atop a very tall pole. You had to
use a club jelly bow and some blunt
arrows with huge Flu-Flu's. You
stood about fifteen feet from the
base of the pole and shot up to
three arrows at the duck. A marshal
or two was on hand at this
shot, with one running up the field
collecting arrows. My first two
arrows missed by nothing at all,
the fletches grazing the duck,
then the third arrow hit. This was
a huge fun shot and everyone
enjoyed it immensely.
There were a good number of
quite steep shots here as well,
with targets placed at the bottom
of short, steep banks. Good variation
and very enjoyable!
I was in a group with some very
capable archers indeed, but do you
think I could do it justice? Not a
prayer! After a long drive the day
before and a sleepless night in a
strange bed in a hotel, I was dog
tired and was shooting all day like
a complete numpty! That's so frustrating!
Knowing you can hit a target,
no problem, then missing it!
I'm sure I need say no more about
that, we all know what that's like.
Still, it was a long way to go and
then shoot badly on the day, which
for me was very disappointing. The
shoot results had me lying seventh.
Told you I was shooting like a
numpty!
A decent night's sleep would
have been useful, but with the
best will in the world I doubt the
club could help with that!
But I'd happily go back there
again. It's an interesting and varied
shoot at a friendly club with
good facilities.
Committee Noticeboard No 1
New General Secretary urgently
needed!
WE WERE informed over 12 months ago that
Andrew Knott would be standing down at the end
of his term due to work commitments, and we
have been asking for someone to take on the
role but have not been successful.
The Society cannot operate without a General
Secretary. We have taken legal advice that says
we may continue for a short period with a coopted
person, which is currently Mike Cobban,
however 'normal service' will not be maintained.
Therefore it is essential that we have someone
come forward as soon as possible.
All members are asked to consider this seriously
as it will affect the Society, so please
come forward, or if you know of someone that
you consider may be able to do this function
please encourage them to put their name forward.
As has been reported in the minutes from the
recent AGM, if we do not find a General
Secretary then we will need to employ an external
person or corporate body to undertake the
function. This will not be cheap and may require
membership fees to increase, possibly by £5 or
more per member.
Please help us find a General Secretary before
August, which is when we will begin to seek quotations
and resumes from appropriate sources.
NFAS Committee
Grants from Sport England
I AM delighted to be able to inform you that two
NFAS clubs have already been awarded grants from
Sport England. They are Kings Lynn Field Archers,
who received £5165, and Magic Dragon Archers, who
received £9993.
If any clubs require assistance in applying for
grants from Sport England, a detailed explanation can
be found on page 42 of the September/October issue
of the NFAS Newsletter.
If you have any queries not covered in the article
please contact Mike Cobban, details on page three.
Disciplinary Notice
BOB MORRIS has been banned from the 2013
National Championships and the 2013 3D Championships
for disposing of rubbish over a fence into woodland
at last year’s National Champs at Arley Hall. This
was despite there being skips nearby.
NFAS Committee
Unacceptable Conduct
CAROL FLAVELL, Newsletter Editor, has decided to
withdraw her telephone number from the Newsletter.
An increasing number of members have been telephoning
(and emailing) Carol regarding issues with
shoot dates that should be directed to the Shoot
Dates Organiser - Lewis Chuck; and queries about not
receiving the Newsletter that should be asked of the
Membership Secretary - Richard Dobson.
Recently she correctly directed a member twice to
Richard Dobson, and was very upset to subsequently
learn that she was then accused in an email of being
‘unhelpful’.
At the recent AGM it was agreed that this form of
inconsideration was not acceptable to the membership
as it constituted abuse of officers of the
Society, who give up their free time to work on
behalf of the membership.
It is worth reiterating that all officers of the
Society are volunteers and do not receive any payment
for their time and services to the Society and
the Membership.
How to increase entries at the
Nationals?
FOLLOWING a lengthy discussion at the recent AGM
it was agreed to consult the membership for constructive
and viable suggestions for ways to
increase/encourage entries to the Nationals in the
future.
If you would like to contribute please send your ideas
to Dave Fuller or Mike Cobban, details on page three.
Acting General Secretary
National Championships venue for 2013
DAVE FULLER, Field Officer, is looking for a potential
venue for the 2013 National Championships.
He would be interested to hear from any club which
feels that they meet the criteria, as described in the
November/December NFAS Newsletter.
At this stage he is looking at all possible options for
suitable venues.
Interested clubs should call or email Dave (details
on page three) by the end of January 2013.
Committee Noticeboard No 2
2013 Membership Form
The time has come for the new, revised membership
form to be circulated and, as can be seen from the
form, membership prices have remained the same as
previous years.
There will be the added method of on-line renewals via
the website. This has been introduced for Renewals only
at this time, but may be progressed to new members
later in the year.
I would like to take this opportunity to answer a few
questions and make a few requests. The requests are
being made to help get your membership cards out efficiently
and save me some time chasing up missing
details. Please pass this information on to prospective
new members and, if you are a club official or coach,
please check the form you are signing to make sure it
has been completed correctly.
Please ensure all details are entered correctly on the
form. The most common missing details are for the
newsletter option, the Date of Birth for under 16s and
the club name (if you are in one). With the latter, if no
club is indicated on the form for new members,
‘Independent’ membership will be issued.
If changes are made after the membership card has
been issued a further cost will be incurred.
Please avoid using Recorded Delivery postage. My previous
postman used to sign them and post them through
my letterbox. However, the new one will not do this and
he just leaves me the little card to take to the local
sorting office. Due to my work hours I am sometimes
not able to collect them for two weeks! Saturday is the
only day I can get there, but this is also the day I go to
my club for a bit of shooting!
In 2012 I was inundated with requests for a speedy
turnaround of membership cards as new members were
being advised (wrongly) to book into shoots before
receiving their Full Membership card, and existing members
renewing late.
I do not offer an "express" service! I have had to disappoint
some members and tell them they will not be
able to attend a shoot that they have booked into.
To follow on from the release made in the
August/September issue relating to Sport England funding,
I will be tidying up the club database. There are
many clubs that do not meet the minimum criteria set
out by the NFAS (a current Constitution and/or a minimum
three members). These clubs will be removed from
the database, so some members may find their membership
returned as Independent.
If you are unsure if your club meets the requirements
please contact me (details on page three).
Any club that wishes to pursue the Sport England
funding will need to re-register to obtain the NGB registration
number. This may involve the club’s
Constitution being updated to bring it in line with Sport
England requirements.
The answers to a lot of the questions I am asked are
on the membership form or in the rule book under
Membership, but here are the answers to some frequently
asked questions:
How long will it take for my card to come through:-
Approximately one week but up to three weeks at busy
times (February and March). If after three weeks you
haven’t received your card please ring or email me. Your
card might have gone missing in the post (or I could be
on holiday).
Do I have to fill a form out each year:-
Yes. Please complete all sections, tick all necessary
boxes and use the current year’s form.
Do I have to get someone to sign the bottom section
of the form:-
If you are renewing a Full or Provisional membership, no.
This section is for new archers being signed off as competent.
When will my membership run out:-
Membership will expire 31st March of the following year
from when you join/renew.
I have changed club. Can I have a new card:-
Yes, but it will cost £5 for the issue of a new card, the
same as it would if you lost your card and need a
replacement.
Can my son/daughter over 16 be one of the adults in
a family membership:-
No, they will be an individual adult in their own right.
Finally, may I ask that should one of our members sadly
pass away that I be informed as soon as possible.
This may help in stopping newsletters being sent out
which has, in the past, caused further upset to family
members.
Online Membership Renewal
ONLINE Membership Renewals will be available to
existing NFAS members from 3rd January 2013. At the
moment, the system cannot be used for new applications
or for existing Provisional members upgrading to Full
membership.
Applications should be made per household (ie people
living at the same address). You will be asked to complete
a form for each applicant, but you will only make
one payment. Payment processing will be administered by
II’S 2013, which means the world didn’t end on 21st
December 2012 as predicted by some! So we can look
forward to meeting up again on the courses and in the
tea tents for manly hugs and girly gossip for another
twelve months. Happy New Year everyone!
Aquarius
You have already got off to a good start this year and
you’re clear about the direction you want your life to
head in. With Mars in your sign all through January,
you are in a powerful position for careers and networking
and will have fun making new connections.
Lucky day: Sunday
Pisces
Daydreaming has taken up a lot of your time lately but
you need to focus on what you can actually achieve
instead of what you fantasize about. It’s no good
shooting for the stars if you really want your arrows in
the kill.
Lucky day: Friday
Aries
Your holiday spending is catching up with you so keep a
tight rein on your finances until you are back on your
feet. Your over indulgence in the festive season has
also taken its toll so work it off by attending plenty of
shoots and practice days.
Lucky day: Tuesday
Taurus
You have learned a great deal from past mistakes and
you’re capable of great things when you put your mind
to it so with Saturn and Scorpio working in your favour,
now is an ideal time to sharpen up your archery skills
with some intensive practice.
Lucky day: Monday
Gemini
Your family are bickering and work colleagues just
can’t see all the hard work you’re putting in so maybe
it’s time for a break? A few days away will do you a
world of good and you could combine this with a trip to
one of the clubs a bit further afield than your normal
shooting grounds.
Lucky day: Thursday
Cancer
Did you get some extra coaching as advised last time?
No? Well, please don’t blame me if you don’t do as well
as you were hoping to over the start of the new year.
Coffee Break
The Field Archers’ Horoscope
Good luck Cancerians!
Lucky day: Saturday 2nd February
by Moira Hodgkinson
Leo
You have always been attracted to glittery, shiny
things and your new bow lives up to your expectations
of perfection. Now make good use of it and you’ll be
adding a few medals to jazz up your collection.
Lucky day: Sunday
Virgo
February 25th brings you a full moon filled with promises
of positive change. You are not normally a sign to
welcome change but this will feel like a natural progression
of something you already started, so relax!
Lucky day: Wednesday
Libra
Snow, mud and Libra are not a happy combination but
don’t stay away too long, you know you love it really!
Though do make sure you hit the target as raking for
arrows in this weather is nobody’s idea of fun…
Lucky day: Thursday, Jan 17th
Scorpio
Your significant other is planning, plotting and scheming.
A holiday is on the cards and it may not be one of
your choosing, but if you’re quick you might be able to
swing an archery holiday abroad. If you can’t manage
that, argue in favour of a holiday here as a run up to
the 3Ds instead.
Lucky day: Sunday afternoons
Sagittarius
You are really going for it over the next couple of
months and the change of style recently has been easier
than you thought it would be. February especially
will be a good month for you in this class with a first
and two second places.
Lucky day: Tuesday
Capricorn
The new moon on January 11th is a positive time with
things going in your favour. However, don’t push your
luck financially as you have spent far too much on your
archery accessories lately. You don’t have to carry the
kitchen sink around with you!
Lucky day: Next Wednesday

ARCHERY IN THE MOVIES No 26
"THE PROFESSIONALS”
(Columbia Pictures 1966 USA)
Starring: Burt Lancaster, Jack Palance, Ralph Bellamy, Robert Ryan, Lee Marvin,
Woody Strode
Director: Richard Brooks
THIS has to be one of my favourite westerns. To start with, the cast list is
magnificent, the scenery awesome and the action exciting. The plot consists
of the ‘Professionals’, Lancaster et al, who are employed by a wealthy mining
man J W Grant (Ralph Bellamy) to rescue his young Mexican wife who has
been kidnapped by a Mexican warlord Jesus Raza (Palance). “Jesus…what a
name for the bloodiest butcher in Mexico” says Bellamy.
Each of the rescuers has his own particular talent, but Woody Strode is
the skilled archer who is employed to great effect towards the climax of
the movie.
The movie was
filmed in Death
Valley, California and
in Nevada and uses
the rocky, barren landscape to memorable effect.
Plenty of action and, with an unexpected twist in the
end, this movie is highly recommended viewing.
Minutes of 39th AGM
Minutes of the 39th AGM were accepted.
Matters arising from 39th AGM
There were four matters arising from the previous year’s minutes:
1. It was confirmed that non-NFAS clubs are not promoting shoots through NFAS’ Newsletter or shoot listings on NFAS’
website.
2. Written details as well as maps have been given, where possible, on 3D and National Championship entry forms.
3. An update on obtaining Forestry Commission approval for use of crossbows on their land is on the agenda of the 40th
AGM.
4. A question was raised about whether the 3D Championships and National Championships could be combined into
one event. A discussion on the future of the National Championships is on the agenda of the 40th AGM.
Officers’ reports
Reports were delivered by the President, General Secretary, Treasurer, Field Officer and Membership Secretary,
Newsletter Editor and Coaching Officer. The webmaster was also invited to give a brief update.
Nigel Bell, in his first President’s report stressed that he intended to keep his report very brief. Nigel stressed how the
Committee continue to work closely together. He emphasised that the Committee had recently made much more use of
internet conference calls as a way of cutting down the cost of holding Committee meetings and that this has been working
well.
The General Secretary’s report highlighted a recent insurance claim made for an alleged accident that took place in
2010 and which has been rejected by our insurers. Andrew Knott highlighted that NFAS has had a good track record of
insurance claims, but that care is needed to ensure that claims are legitimate to avoid increases in insurance costs
which will push up membership costs.
Andrew Knott, the General Secretary, announced that following a disciplinary process Bob Morris has now been banned
from the Nationals and 3Ds in 2013 for dumping rubbish over a hedge at the National Championship campsite. He also
identified that a contract to hold the 3Ds at Osmaston for a third year has now been signed.
Andrew raised the point that at the last AGM he made it known that he was not going to stand for a third term as
General Secretary due to changes in his day job. Over the last year NFAS has been inviting any members interested in
the position to speak to the Committee, but there have been no candidates. Consequentially, Andrew identified that
NFAS will be without anybody in this role and a volunteer is sought urgently. Legal advice has been sought about the
lack of anyone carrying out the General Secretary’s role upon the Society and NFAS Limited. The lawyer’s advice is
that another Committee member can be co-opted to carry out the tasks, including the responsibilities for ensuring that
NFAS is properly insured and the legal responsibilities that need to be undertaken for NFAS Ltd.
Andrew identified that Mike Cobban has kindly agreed to undertake the General Secretary’s legal and insurance responsibilities
in addition to his role as Treasurer. However, Mike would not be carrying out the full responsibilities of the
General Secretary. Following a discussion by the Committee it was agreed that if there is no suitable candidate within
the next year, the Committee will need to review the General Secretary’s responsibilities and to pay an external organisation
to carry out key tasks. It was identified that there is no intention to pay a NFAS member to carry out tasks previously
undertaken by the General Secretary because this will be setting a precedent to pay other Committee members
and volunteers.
Andrew thanked the Committee for all the work done by every Committee member that goes on ‘behind the scenes’
throughout the year. He also thanked Alex Tyler, his wife, who in addition to being NFAS ‘official photographer’ at the

3Ds and Nationals, also (like many others) helps with admin at these events and also regularly fields many calls from
NFAS members when she happens to be back from work ahead of Andrew.
The Treasurer’s report highlighted that for a third year running there would not be an increase in membership fees in
2013/14. However, Mike Cobban, the Treasurer, identified that if NFAS needs to pay an external organisation to carry
out part of the remit of the General Secretary, this could lead to a £5 increase per person in membership fees next year.
Mike referred members to the Society’s accounts for the year ending March 2012 which were printed in the
September/October 2012 Newsletter. Mike identified that in the last financial year the Society had a surplus of circa
£24,000 which was a slight increase on the previous year. A key factor in this improvement is that NFAS made a surplus
of £460 on the 3Ds in 2012 compared to a loss of £2,873 in the previous year. However, the National
Championships made a loss of £7,783 in 2012, which was similar to 2011, and Mike identified that the reason for the
loss is the high fixed costs of staging the event and the comparatively low number of entrants.
Mike also highlighted that another reason for the increased surplus in 2012 is that the Committee has managed to
reduce expenditure over the last year. An example given is that £1,100 in annual storage costs have been saved by
selling off 66 bosses used at the National Championships following a decision to reduce the event to two courses, and
this saving outweighs the costs of buying additional bosses if the number of courses are increased in the future.
After 30 months of discussion and negotiation with Sport England Mike was pleased to be able to announce that NFAS
clubs can now apply for grants of up to £10,000 and that two clubs have already been successful in obtaining grants.
Dave Fuller, the Field Officer identified that there were 600 plus archers at the 2012 3D Championships and more than
400 at this year’s National Championship. He thanked the course layers, Dave Haynes and volunteers for all the hard
work that went into making these successful events.
A decision was made to reduce the 2012 National Championships to two courses and that this had been well received.
Dave identified that the current intention for the 2013 National Championships is to continue with two courses and that
only having two courses makes it easier to find suitable venues. He highlighted an idea that had been set out in the
September/October Newsletter of clubs with sufficiently large grounds and parking to host the National Championships
for a fee, and Dave asked that any clubs which would like to consider the idea to speak to him no later than January
(preferably sooner).
Dave highlighted that we may not be at Osmaston in 2014 as other venues are being sought.
Carol Flavell, the Newsletter Editor, identified that she had been carrying out the role for the last six years, but there
appeared to be an increase in people telephoning and emailing her to fix problems which are outside Carol’s control.
She highlighted that any issues about shoot dates and shoot contacts should go to Lewis Chuck, Shoots Organiser, and
any queries about not receiving newsletters or only getting on-line newsletters should go to Richard Dobson, the
Membership Secretary. She emphasised that she does not have access to the membership database. Carol particularly
highlighted an incident which greatly upset her when, after twice directing a member to the right person, she was then
copied into an email to the Membership Secretary saying how unhelpful she had been. Consequently, Carol will no
longer be publishing her telephone number in the newsletter.
Paul Chapman, from the floor, asked that a piece is put into the next newsletter to emphasise that it is not acceptable for
members to abuse officers of the Society, who give up their free time to work on behalf of the membership.
Richard Dobson, in his membership report, stated that membership numbers were little changed from the previous year
at around 5,100. Around 20% of the membership does not renew each year and these are predominantly people who
have just started field archery but decide not to continue the following year.
Richard said that he is seeing an increase in incorrectly completed membership applications, which delays sending back
membership cards and creates extra work for Richard. He said that he will put a piece in the next Newsletter to help
people avoid making similar errors in the future (see page 17). Richard also made it clear that some people continue to
have unrealistic expectations about the speed with which he can process membership applications. Some new members
seem to be encouraged to enter an open shoot the week after they are signed off as competent archers and then
expect Richard to be able to process their Full membership within a few days. This is unrealistic and many new members
are disappointed when they are unable to attend their first open shoot because they have not yet received their Full
membership card.
Brian Allen asked from the floor whether the Committee gets feedback about why people do not renew membership.
Richard identified that many of this group fall within the 16-25 age group. Mike Cobban highlighted that GNAS/ Archery
GB has a similar rate of non-renewals.
Bernie Britton, in his Coach Training Co-ordinator’s report, spoke about running his first training course and thanked Ian
Ross and Mike Williams for all their help as Coach Trainers. This thanks was echoed by the President. Bernie identified
that a course had been held in June/July 2012 in East Anglia and the intention is to hold other courses in the South
West and North West. Bernie is also looking to recruit more Coach Trainers.
Bernie also stressed the benefits of Coach Training being accredited by the Open College Network (OCN), which means
that the quality of NFAS’ courses are externally validated by a professional body.
Jo Cane, NFAS’ webmaster, highlighted that she and the Committee are currently testing an on-line membership renewal
system, with the intention of this being ready for 2013 membership renewals (see page 17).
21

Andrew Knott highlighted Richard Cope’s role as a ‘hidden hero’ of the 3Ds and Nationals. As Trophy Officer, Richard,
together with and his partner Hannah Hammond, work tirelessly before these events chasing up people for the return of
trophies, polishing and repairing trophies both before and during the events and then ensuring that the right trophies are
handed to the right people during the awards ceremonies. Especially with the large numbers of Nationals trophies, this
is not a simple task. Paul Chapman, from the floor, also thanked Richard for transporting an injured marshal at the 3Ds.
Election of Officers of NFAS
Newsletter Editor: Carol Flavell was re-elected unopposed as Newsletter Editor for another three years.
Membership Secretary: Richard Dobson was re-elected unopposed as Membership Secretary for another three years.
Safety Officer: Rob Williams has decided to stand down as Safety Officer. Since there were no other applicants for this
role, the Committee has agreed to co-opt Paul Colley into this role. As set out in NFAS’ Constitution, Paul will stand for
election next year along with any other candidates.
Paul was welcomed to the Committee. Paul is the Health and Safety Officer for a major timber engineering firm, a
NFAS coach and a Coach Trainer (see page 10 for Paul’s ‘resume’) .
Proposals
Andrew Knott described that the AGM would follow the format for proposals used in recent years and already set out in
the Newsletter. Proposals have been published in the NFAS Newsletter and the proposer (or one of the named supporters
of a proposal) described the proposal and benefits that it would bring. Members then had the opportunity to discuss
the proposal and, where appropriate, to suggest amendments. A revised list of proposals (with any amendments) would
then be published in the January/February Newsletter to enable eligible members to vote on these by post or via the
internet. The results of votes will be published in the March/April Newsletter and come into force on 1st April.
Andrew identified that Mike Cobban has agreed to run the voting process in the absence of a General Secretary.
Modification to NFAS Safety Policy
Andrew highlighted that the Committee had used its powers set out in the Constitution under the Standing Order procedure
of the Constitution (clause 6.1) to introduce a modification to the NFAS Safety Policy. This revised Safety Policy
was published in the November/December 2012 Newsletter. The Standing Order procedure allows the Committee to
bring in a rule from the point when it is published in a Newsletter and hence this revised Safety Policy came into effect
from the publication of the November/December 2012 Newsletter. As set out in the Constitution, the revised Safety
Policy will be voted on by the membership after publication of proposals in the January/February 2013 Newsletter,
together with other proposals taken forward for voting.
Andrew highlighted that the changes to the Safety Policy had been taken following legal advice. The amendment clarifies
that the Committee has the authority to veto any changes to rules which the Committee considers to be unsafe.
The legal advice sought had confirmed that the Committee’s actions were constitutional. Andrew emphasised that
Committee members have ultimate legal responsibility for safety and in carrying this legal responsibility it is only appropriate
that the Committee can ensure, on behalf of the membership, that any unsafe proposals can be stopped. Andrew
also highlighted that it is important that the Committee’s veto should only cover safety issues which was the intention
when the Constitution was revised in 2009.
Proposal A – Head-to-head shooting
This proposal was not carried forward for debate or voting because the proposer or any of his named supporters did not
attend the AGM to explain the proposal.
Proposal B – Amendment to Longbow definition
Andrew Knott, on behalf of the Committee, explained that the Committee wished to amend the proposal set out in the
September/October newsletter to address some points raised by members about the shape of an unstrung longbow.
Andrew described revised wording to the second paragraph of the proposed new definition which closely follows existing
wording for AFB about limb curvature. The revised wording is:
“When braced, the limbs must curve in one direction only from the handle riser to the string nock. When braced the
string must not come into contact with the face of either limb except at the nock grooves. The ends of limbs cannot be
recurved.”
There was a constructive debate about the proposal and discussion about whether the definition needed to be more
detailed about the proportions of ‘D’ sections/oval limbs. Following the discussion, the Committee decided not to further
complicate the definition by adding more rules about limb shape. However, it was recognised that the rule definition
might need to be changed in the future if it was apparent that archers were abusing the definition and, essentially, shooting
wooden flatbows as longbows.
Proposal C – Amendment to Shooting Rule 19 about use of cameras
Andrew Knott, on behalf of the Committee, explained that the amendment is being proposed to address claims of cheating.
The revised wording allows archers to take photographs, but avoids archers using cameras being accused of using
their cameras to gain a competitive advantage by zooming in on kill areas or range-finding. Andrew explained that currently
the Committee is asked to adjudicate on accusations of cheating and the current rule does not make it easy to
distinguish when somebody is simply taking a photo or when he/she may actually be cheating.
22

Rob Jones (from the floor) queried whether the proposal assumed cheating will take place. Alex Tyler, from the floor
(and a signatory to the proposal) said that she has tested the proposed amendment and it does work: it has not hampered
her when she has been taking photographs. Harry Boyce added that there had been past experience of someone
using a camera to zoom in on kill areas but that it was currently hard to prove or disprove claims about cheating.
Sharon Jones queried whether the proposed change would stop people taking pictures of archers and was assured that
this was not the case.
There was a constructive debate about clarifying that any photographer cannot use a photographic device to give an
archer a competitive advantage and amended wording was proposed which will now be put to a vote by eligible members.
Proposal D – Amendment to Shooting Rule 26 about kneeling
This proposal was not carried forward for debate or voting because the proposer or any of his named supporters did not
attend the AGM to explain the proposal.
Proposal E – Amendment to crossbow definition to allow use of cocking aids
This proposal was not carried forward for debate or voting because the proposer or any of his named supporters did not
attend the AGM to explain the proposal.
Andrew Knott, the General Secretary, identified that the Committee believed that this proposal created a significant safety
risk and the Committee had informed the proposer of the Committee’s intention to veto this proposal on safety
grounds if it was put forward at the AGM. The Committee believed that the current wording of the proposal meant that it
was too open to abuse by members using cocking aids to shoot unacceptably high powered bows. In the view of the
Committee the proposed method of policing the proposal was not realistic and would not happen. Nigel Bell identified
that several clubs were considering banning crossbows if this proposal was voted in. Nigel also pointed out that current
negotiations with the Forestry Commission to allow the use of crossbows on Forestry Commission land was based upon
our current rules and that cocking aids would not be acceptable to the Forestry Commission. A number of clubs currently
rent land from the Forestry Commission and it is also being looked at as a future source of venues for 3D and
National Championships.
Any Other Business
There was an extensive debate about what could be done to revive attendance at the National Championships. Mike
Cobban, the Treasurer, identified that these events will always have a higher entry cost than a normal two day shoot
because of the high set-up costs. Mike identified that medals alone for the National Championships cost over £800.
Suggestions were made that the event could be opened up to archers from overseas and other archery bodies. It was
possible that the date could be moved forward to the August Bank holiday so that more young archers could attend without
needing to take time off school, although it was recognised that this had not been well received when previously proposed
by the Committee. An alternative idea was to swap the dates of the 3Ds and Nationals.
A question was raised about whether shooting Big Game rounds at the National Championships made it boring and that
there should be mixed rounds. However, it was recognised that many of the other rounds require a lot of time to shoot.
It was also highlighted that there is a tendency to make paper face rounds more difficult by putting targets too far away
and that this can be very dispiriting for many archers.
Another idea put forward was to have two grades of membership. In additional to normal membership there could be a
new type of membership where the membership fee also covered entry to the Nationals and 3Ds. This annual fee
would give a discount on the two events and so encourage participation.
Discussion also covered whether declining numbers at the National Championships was an inevitable consequence of
clubs putting on fewer paper shoots, and that the solution was for clubs to encourage more people to shoot paper faces.
A question was raised about whether Osmaston should be used as a venue for future National Championships, but
Dave Fuller, the Field Officer, identified that this was not possible because Osmaston would be unavailable because of
game bird shooting.
It was recognised that none of the individual ideas put forward offered a simple solution to the problem. Rob Jones proposed
that the membership is approached to get the membership’s views on ideas to increase numbers at the
Nationals. This was agreed and it was also suggested that this should be done at the same time as voting on AGM proposals
to make it easier for members to express their views.
Nigel Bell, President, concluded the discussion on how to increase attendance at the National Championships by highlighting
the importance of experienced archers promoting the event to others.
Ian Ross raised a question about whether we recognise adults at 16 or 18. Nigel Bell said that he would take up the
matter with NFAS’ Child Protection Officer.
Paul Chapman thanked the Committee for their hard work and also congratulated the caterers at the AGM venue.
President’s Trophy
The President’s Trophy for outstanding contribution to field archery in the last twelve months was awarded to George
Hampson, Poulter Guys Bowmen. George accepted the trophy and highlighted that it should also be for his grandson
who worked just as hard as George on behalf of NFAS. (See page 4.)
The meeting finished at 14:31.
Targets and tantrums!
Part Four: The Amazing Anteater
by Mark Jones, Excaliber Archers
THE final chapter in my series is a combination of all
the techniques tried and tested on previous projects.
Why an anteater? (At this point my number one son
Pete will be cringing!) As a small boy his granny used
to read him a story about the Amazing Anteater who
used to pick up all the sweets dropped by the children
with its long tongue. This became his favourite
animal. As he shoots Bowhunter we thought this
would make a unique Christmas present.
The base ‘victim’ was a very worn out McKenzie
black walking bear. The front foot was missing, the
joint in the middle was held together with gaffer
tape and the kill area had more holes than a colander
(some archers would consider this to be still in pretty
good shape!)
Taking a photo from a book I traced an outline to
get a rough idea of scale... head length and tail length
compared to body length. I then measured the old
target and, using these for my calculation, I found
that from the tip of its nose to the tip of its tail it
would end up 7ft long!
I decided the first job would be to mend the head
and middle joints. This was done using Titebond,
which I knew could be carved and sanded into shape.
(A quick tip I learnt from previous targets: where
the joints have been repaired or are very tight, spray
them with cheap silicone spray polish. This makes
them easier to put together and pull apart.)
The next step was to put the target together and
lay it on the ground. Then, using my outline as a guide
for scale, I cut a large piece of Kingspan for the tail,
and judged how long I would need to extend the nose.
The head section was now carved down by roughly
removing the old ears and features of the bear. I
lengthened the nose with a piece of dowel pushed
into a hole I had drilled in the original bear’s nose.
The dowel was covered in adhesive foam and, when it
dried, this and the rest of the head was carved and
sanded into the correct shape.
I then started on the rear end and tail. The
Kingspan was carved to the round shape of the bear’s
rear. Four dowels were drilled and glued into the
bear’s rear, with approximately 12 inches left sticking
out. The Kingspan is fairly soft so, with a good
push, the tail section was carefully pushed onto the
protruding dowels until it sat flush up against the
target. More adhesive foam was then used on both
sides of the tail piece to secure.
Pete shoots a fairly powerful compound and I knew
that with repeated shooting the kill area would not
last very long if I only filled it with foam. Again, my
good friend Tony Weston and I had worked out that
you could fit a Rinehart target plug in the kill area.
This would make the target last considerably longer
as it is made from the same stuff as Rinehart targets.
So with a little scheming by my dear wife, the
required insert was purchased from The Archery
Company and
smuggled past
the number
one son.
Now the “fun”
part; cutting
out the
round(ish) hole
in the kill area
allowing me to
insert the new
plug. Enter one
extremely
vicious pad saw
(very sharp,
with long
teeth), a large
sheet to catch
the mess, two
men, a large piece of timber and a sledge hammer.
The rest I will leave to your imagination, but it would
have made a wonderful video (except the wife was
too busy laughing to film it!)
Some two hours later it was finally in position after
having been tested to fit about 30 times, each time
gradually carving away the old material until the final
adjustment was made and it fitted.
31

The timber protected the new insert from the
sledge hammer and once in place it was then sanded
on both sides to match the body shape.
A new leg pole was fitted into the front leg; adhesive
foam surrounded it before it was carved and
shaped into a new foot. Using foam to build up the
details on the back leg, this was also carved to match
the front. The tail was carved to create a shaggy hair
effect.
Once all the parts were smoothed and sanded to my
satisfaction, the kill area on the insert was marked
and burnt in with the hot wire.
The final finishing was with a coat of PVA and a covering
of muslin over all three pieces. After several
days of drying I used my picture as a reference for
the colours and shading.
The making of this target must have been the best
kept secret in the NFAS archery world. All our
friends knew what was going on, just not the number
one son (hehehe).
I will never forget the look on Pete’s face at
Christmas when he unwrapped each part and realised
what it was. I almost forgot he was 23 years old and
not five anymore!
All the work had paid off big time, and if you are
really lucky and go into the woods in certain parts of
Devon you may even come across The Amazing
Anteater!
Admin will try to accommodate requests for shooting with a partner but cannot guarantee this except on medical
grounds. Where different styles mean that partners would normally shoot different courses and both partners still wish
to shoot together, you should indicate which partner intends to shoot non-competitively (that is on a different course
from other archers in his/her bow class). Any request to shoot with another archer/helper on medical grounds requires
suitable medical evidence to be provided a minimum two weeks prior to the event.
Any archer who submits a list of demands about who they will/will not shoot with (children, named individuals etc) may
find that their application is not accepted.

It’s not my fault! (Episode 1)
by Paul Colley
I AM a member of the Spirit of Sherwood Field
Archery Club, based in Warsop, Nottinghamshire, and
have been shooting since mid 2005. There are several
reasons why I continue to shoot and, more importantly,
enjoy shooting. I list some here:
l It gets me out in the fresh air where I can enjoy
Britain's ‘green and pleasant woodlands’;
l It is a good hobby, and one I can afford;
l I am meeting and making good friends;
l The attitude of most archers is based around
‘enjoying the day’;
l And... I have a laugh listening to and adding to the
list of good humoured excuses as to why we miss a
target that we just should not miss!
Many things keep a smile on my face, but especially
the excuses that we all make when we shoot badly. I
have now joined in with the veteran archers and can
make excuses with the best of them, so I thought it
was time to write a few of them down and share them
with everyone else. Those who will find this list useful
will be:
u Archers who have run out of their own excuses
(rare, I know);
u Archers who don’t know how to make excuses and
would like an idea of where to start (I am sure there
are at least two of these in the NFAS!);
u Archers who have been very good in the past but
do not want to be so competitive anymore;
u Cocky archers who tell people they are good but
then shoot badly.
Some of the excuses that I have heard have obviously
been made in jest. Some of them have been
based on technical points and some on the surroundings,
but the funniest ones are those spontaneous
ones that are made by people who believe what they
are saying at the time.
I have brought a laugh to many a group when hearing
such an excuse and saying loudly: ‘That's excuse No
108 in the list of excuses folks’. The archer will then
realise what they have said and join in the laughing.
What other sport could you get away with that in?
I have decided to split the excuses into categories
and have settled on the following headings:
Equipment, Nature, People, Others.
So for the first section:
Equipment: The Bow
n ‘I’ve just fitted a new string and it’s not bedded in
yet’ (I tried this one at the 2007 Nationals in Usk.
Surprisingly people laughed at me!)
n ‘I’ve only had the bow for a short while and I’m not
used to it yet’
n ‘I had a problem with my main bow so I had to go
back to my old one’
n ‘I made the mistake of letting someone else use my
bow and it just doesn’t pull right now’
n ‘My nuts aren’t tight enough’ (Oooh Matron)
n ‘I’ve damaged my Allen key and can’t tighten it correctly’
n ‘This pulley's a bit stiff’
n ‘A leaf got stuck in the bottom of my string when I
leaned it against that tree and it changed the direction
of my shot!’ (Yes... someone did say this!)
n ‘I hit a pot hole in the car and I’m sure it has bent
my bow’
n ‘I grip my bow that hard when I shoot that it’s
bending it!’ (From the Uri Geller ‘School of Archery’)
n ‘My bow was leaning against a tree while I pulled my
arrows and a dog wee’d on it. It’s never been the
same since!’ (No dog was harmed in the making of
this comment!)
n ‘I have to cant my bow because the ledge is not
straight, but then my eyeball’s not level’ (Oh yes she
did!)
n ‘This bow’s not been the same since we had that
hot spell’ (Obviously an old excuse)
n ‘I’ve got to stop letting the wife clean my bow, I’m
sure she puts it in the dishwasher!’
n ‘Any other day I would have hit everything with
this bow but today, it just won’t shoot straight’
n ‘I shoot well with this bow on my own target but it
doesn’t like these’
n ‘I was just letting go and my bow moved!’
n ‘Look how level this bow shoots’ (takes his shot and
misses boss) ‘That’s because I shot it to show you
how level it shoots and I’m taller than the boss’ (Yes,
he did!)
n ‘If only this bow would shoot how it used to when
Dave had it’
n ‘When I bought this bow he said it was fast and
accurate. I took it back and he shot it and it worked
OK for him but I must have the wrong arm muscles!’
n ‘I fitted a new leather grip last week and I can get
a good grip now … can’t hit owt, but I’ve got of good
grip of her’
n ‘Can you see that stain just above the grip … that
puts me off and makes me miss’
n ‘This is one of Andy Soars bows and it doesn’t hit a
thing ..’ (It’s the bow then!)
n ‘I must have put this bow together wrong. It’s
shooting too high’
By the keeper of excuses
Paul Colley
Thank you NFAS -
and thank you Sport England!
SOME of you may remember 24th June 2012. We do! Much like now it
rained and we celebrated our first birthday with an open shoot.
Our shoot was the best that we could do with limited resources. We
hand built our bosses from cardboard, carpet and rubber and borrowed
some 3Ds. We were as creative as we could be with 20 small bosses which
were in danger of being washed away.
After the shoot we received a great deal of positive feed back for our
first effort, but within those comments we could hear... “Shame about all
those small bosses” and “Where were the Dragons?”
What none of our visitors knew was that we were one of two clubs invited to pilot the Sport
England grant system - and we were already working on it.
I will not lie to you guys and girls out there, it is hard work. And it is frustrating. But IT IS
WORTH IT!
Having worked our way through all the stages of the application, the grant was submitted at the
end of summer. And then we chewed our fingers to the bone waiting to find out if we had made
the grade. Well we did! And on 19th December Sport England awarded us our grant of just under
£10,000.
By the time you read this we will have proper bosses, training bows and 3Ds, as well as somewhere
to keep everything. But none of this would have been possible without our unsung heroes at
NFAS, namely Richard Dobson and Mike Cobban.
Our thanks to Mike Cobban for all his hard work in getting Sport England to recognise NFAS as
a separate entity to Archery UK, and then his continued support throughout the process of the
application, especially when I ran out of fingers and toes to add up with.
And thanks to Richard Dobson, for all his help and support in ensuring that we met the requirements
of Sport England in terms of the committee set-up and the wording of our Constitution, as
well his encouragement when I got the screaming ab dabs about the application process. So a
really big thanks to them both.
Lastly I have to thank all those members of our club who supported the application process and
gave their input and ideas about what, when and how we should go about things.
So on 23rd June we are going to have another 2x20 shoot, but this time there will be 3Ds and
Dragons!
We look forward to seeing not only those of you who came last year but also some new faces
too.
Again, thank you NFAS!
14th October - Oakwood Bowmen Charity Shoot
THANKS to everyone who attended our 2012 charity shoot on Sunday, 14th October. For some of the archers
this was their first visit to an Oakwood Bowmen shoot. We hope they had a good time and will consider visiting
us again in the future.
The day started rather cold and overcast, but the sun did peep through the clouds later and the temperature
rose one or two degrees to shake off a little of the chill.
Numbers were down compared to previous charity shoots, but despite this we did manage to raise over
£500, which was split between our two chosen charities, Downs Syndrome and the RSPCA.
We would like to thank all the attending archers for their generosity in supporting the two charities.
14th October - Ashcombe Valley Archers
AFTER some awful weather leading up to the shoot
the sun decided to show its face and, apart from one
shower at around lunch time, the rest of the day was
dry.
110 archers came to shoot our course covering both
sides of the road, with admin and catering in the car
park to avoid the long walk to the far end of the
woods.
We received some very positive comments throughout
the day, so well done to the course layers who
managed to catch out quite a few with their devious
target setting! Also well done to the catering team,
who did a tremendous job feeding and watering
everyone.
We hope to see you all again in April.
21st October - Long Eaton Field Archers
AFTER a flurry of no-shows and on the day bookings, 144 archers descended on a misty Lount Wood for the
Long Eaton Autumn Open.
The club would like to thank everyone for their patience while we waited for people held up by the weather.
This caused a delayed start. Sadly the wait did nothing for the mist and no ‘Daggers’, we didn’t hire fog
machines!
Certainly the fog caused some distance judging issues until after lunch, but overall the challenge was met
with good cheer. At the end of the day the sun came out, whilst the ever thickening cloud in the distance held
off until the evening and we got away with yet another dry open for 2012.
As a club we would like to thank everyone for the kind comments they made to the marshals, the booking in
team and the ladies in the catering team, and also for the emails and comments on the NFAS web board.
There is a link to photos of the shoot on the web board.
Our first shoot of 2013 will be on Sunday 5th May, and will be 40 3Ds as a pre-3D Champs preparation
event. More details to follow soon.
Report by Geoff McSweeney
AS USUAL the weather during the week before the shoot was atrocious with
heavy rain. However, it brightened up on the Saturday and the sun actually
shone all day on the Sunday.
This was our first novelty shoot with a
Halloween theme. All the targets were hand
made by our club members, which gave a very
interesting course as nobody had seen the targets
before.
Thanks to Anne, with help from Helen Watson,
for feeding and watering everybody. A great thanks to all the club members
for making up and laying out the targets, which led to some really appreciative
comments from the archers who shot the course.
We hope to repeat it all again next year.
by Mark Taylor, Secretary
THIS was our second shoot and we hoped for good weather. Although it didn’t look good all week we considered
ourselves lucky when we had a very fine morning and early afternoon, and then the rain came.
The weather forecast did create a last minute flush of cancellations, but balanced by new requests we were
left with a very respectable 121 archers walking out.
The course was set comprising of many new faces from makers LCC, (thank you to Trevor and CBA for helping
us there). There was no red squirrel or ermine in sight and no repeat faces. If you missed the long bear
over the dip last time, it was re-instated to give a second chance.
In addition, we were able to offer a 3D target in the top field as the stony nature of our wood precludes us
from putting any inside the wall, which was nice.
We have had many compliments and a couple of constructive comments to work on for this coming year, but
on the whole it was a great success.
So a huge thank you to catering, admin, the marshals, target pasters, work parties, support workers and
course setters for all your hard work behind the scenes, in the weeks leading up to it and all your hard work
on the day.
Finally, a big thank you to all the archers who supported us and for conquering the slope between targets 19
and 20. We enjoyed sharing our wood with you and we look forward to seeing you all again.
FIRSTLY we would like to thank the 165 archers who turned up to our November
shoot. It was nice to see returning archers and new archers enjoying themselves
despite the chilly day.
We hope you all found the course enjoyable as well as challenging. It was great
to hear all the lovely comments on the day. We look forward to seeing you at our
shoots in the future.
As you all may know we lost a member of our club, Dave Worsdall, a few short
months ago. In remembrance for Dave a number of crossbow archers put money
together and donated a trophy to the club. Congratulations to Mike Cobban who
won the crossbow trophy in memory of Dave.
A final thank you to everyone - we raised a grand total of £265.81p for Guide
18th November – Duvelle Bowmen
Report by Lewis Chuck
AFTER having to abandon our shoot in April due to high winds and heavy rain, the weather gods smiled on
Duvelle Bowmen for our autumn shoot.
The morning dawned frosty and sunny, which continued throughout the day. We had 40 targets out and 160
competitors had booked in, keeping the numbers to a very manageable four per target.
Everyone had arrived early as requested and were being taken to the pegs by 10am, with arrows flying by
10.15. The shoot flowed smoothly and results were finished and archers on their way home by 3.45. We managed
to lock the gate on our way home just as darkness fell at 4.30!
The Bev Johnson Memorial Trophy was won by Jon Rudge, and the Harvey Harrison Memorial Trophy by
Craig Kelly.
Special thanks go to Jim and Carol who ran catering all day and kept everyone well fed and watered. Thanks
also to all the Duvelle members who marshalled and worked to make the day a sucess - and a thank you to all
the archers for supporting us.
9th December - Whitefriars Bowmen
Report by Bob Bruce
THE DAY was thoroughly enjoyed by all archers, who also gave us plenty of compliments on our well set course
that had many challenging though fair shots.
Catering was managed by Kay and Rachel, to whom we all say a big thank you for their hard work producing
very good food - and the home made cakes were very much appreciated!
We were also very lucky with the weather, which remained dry and bright for the shoot. We did however
have a short light shower as the medals were being announced which, considering the time of year and what
less fortunate souls have been suffering of late, made us feel lucky indeed.
I would like to take this opportunity once again to thank all the archers who supported our shoot, making it
another successful event at our ground.
Our next 3D shoot is on 10th February 2013, so if you would like to take part then please contact Bob Bruce
at whitefriars.bowmen@gmail.com
