Practical solutions to the challenges of cross-border work are also being provided<br />

by organisations such as Eurogeographics 39 who represent the work of Member<br />

States organisations, such as cadastre maps across many states, <strong>and</strong> Ordnance<br />

Survey in the UK, in mapping l<strong>and</strong>, boundaries <strong>and</strong> information relating to it, to<br />

achieve harmonisation of working <strong>and</strong> information sharing. <strong>European</strong> initiatives<br />

such as INSPIRE aim to provide for a single EU-wide source of spatial information so<br />

that a conveyancer in Cardiff could search a plot of l<strong>and</strong> in Portugal <strong>and</strong> find out<br />

its boundaries, whether there were zones applying to it, its proximity to a road, etc.<br />

The recent launch of the Europe Union’s e-Justice portal 40 , which was the<br />

subject of a resolution in the <strong>European</strong> Parliament 41 , will ultimately make access<br />

to justice much easier for many issues. Its continued development should<br />

increase the availability of legal advice for citizens, from the simple find-a-notary<br />

scheme, to the specifics of foreign law <strong>and</strong> legal systems. Likewise, the work of<br />

the <strong>European</strong> L<strong>and</strong> Registry <strong>and</strong> the pilot CROBECO project which will do even<br />

more to get legal professionals working together cross-border to ensure that the<br />

purchaser buys what he would expect to buy in his own system.<br />

The Iberjuris project<br />

Mr Xavier Ibarrondo 42 Vice President of the Belgian network of Eurojuris, a leading<br />

<strong>European</strong> wide legal professional network, introduces their framework <strong>and</strong><br />

in particular the Iberjuris project aiming to improve transactions for EU citizens in<br />

the Iberian Peninsula.<br />

EUROJURIS international was established in 1980 across Europe <strong>and</strong> is the number<br />

one group of <strong>European</strong> lawyers’ chambers today. It has a presence in 610<br />

different towns <strong>and</strong> in 18 countries.<br />
