Unique UNESCO heritage sites in Malaysia
On 7 July, 2008, Melaka and George
Town, Penang, were added to the list of the
United Nations Educational, Scientific and
Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World
Heritage sites. The two Malaysian capitals
thus joined the ranks of Gunung Mulu
National Park and Kinabalu Park,
both inscribed into the list in 2000.
It was an achievement for Malaysians to be
proud of since it put Malaysia in the ranks of
other iconic landscapes and monuments such
as China’s Great Wall, India’s Taj Mahal,
the US’ Grand Canyon and Australia’s
Great Barrier Reef.
So what was it about Melaka and George
Town that made the cut? Both cities are
known to be steeped in culture and heritage,
reflected in the architecture of its buildings
and monuments.
Melaka’s unique buildings, churches,
squares and fortifications bear testament to
the various influences that ruled the empire in
earlier centuries, i.e. the Melaka sultanate,
Fort Cornwallis
A Famosa
as well as the Portuguese and the Dutch
powers.
George Town’s landscape, on the other
hand, show significant influence from
British rule in the 18th century.
With a past firmly rooted in international
trade, both Malaysian capitals naturally
became the entry point for such culturally
and ethnically diverse people from all
corners of the world. Each brought with
them their own heritage and tradition,
art and culture, architecture and lifestyle,
to imprint upon the town they entered.
Soon, each community grew, building
around them religious temples, places of
worship and ethnic quarters, bringing their
festivals and celebrations, dances, costumes,
art and music, food and language into their
adopted home.
Among the places in George Town that
have been recognized as world heritage
sites are: the waterfront district including the
Esplanade and harbour area,
Fort Cornwallis, Weld Quay and Beach
Street, the historical commercial centre,
including the “ethnic streets” like Bishop
Street and Church Street (Eurasians), China
Street (Chinese), Market and Chulia Streets
(Indians), and Little India, the guilds and
trades precinct including Chulia, Muntri,
Leith and adjacent streets, the mosque and
wakaf enclave of Acheen Street and Kapitan
Keling mosques, and Chinese clans enclave
with the Khoo, Cheah, Tan, Lim, Yap and
Yeoh clan or kongsi (share) houses.
In Melaka, the UNESCO World Heritage
list covers St Paul’s Hill, St Paul’s Church,
Porta de Santiago (A Famosa) fortress and
Stadhuys complex, the residential and
commercial areas of Jalan Tun Tan Cheng
Lock (Heeren Street), Jalan Hang Jebat
(Jonker Walk) and adjacent streets including
Harmony Street, and the Malacca River.
Melaka is easily accessible by road,
about 147 kilometres from Kuala Lumpur.
It is a two-hour drive from Kuala Lumpur
on the North-South Highway. The journey
to George Town from Kuala Lumpur,

FEATURE
on the other hand, takes about four hours
by road.
If Melaka and George Town made it on
the UNESCO listing based on their cultural
merit, then Gunung Mulu National Park
and Kinabalu Park were certainly chosen
due to the importance of their natural
landscape.
Gunung Mulu National Park is located
near Miri, Sarawak. Named after Mount
Mulu, the second highest mountain in
Sarawak, the park was nominated due to
its incredible caves and karst formations in
a mountainous equatorial rainforest setting.
The park is also noted for its many caves
and exploration activities. Within the park is
the world's biggest natural enclosed space –
the Sarawak chamber, found in Gua Nasib
Bagus (Good Fortune Cave). It is said to be
big enough to fit St. Peter's Basilica or
several jumbo-jets inside. Other famous
caves are Benarat Cavern, Deer Cave,
Wind Cave, and Clearwater Cave,
which exposes parts of a long underground
river going through the park.
Mount Kinabalu, at 4,095 metres high,
is said to be growing about 5 mm a year.
Gunung Mulu National Park is the most
studied tropical karst area in the world.
The mountain and its surroundings
feature a huge variety of flora, and is one
of the world’s most important biological
sites. The primary focus however has
shifted to promoting activities that foster
understanding and appreciation of the
park’s natural assets. This is done through
awareness programmes for the significance
of the park and its environment, as well as
ecotourism activities.
The only way to get to and from Mulu is
by air, from the Miri airport. It is possible to
travel by riverboat, but it requires the charter
of a long boat for the last leg of the journey
which would take around 12 hours from
Miri, compared to the 30-minute journey
by air.
Kinabalu Park is located at the west
coast of Sabah and is known as one of the
first national parks of Malaysia. It is also
Malaysia's first World Heritage Site
designated by UNESCO in December 2000
for its outstanding universal values and its
role as one of the most important biological
sites in the world.
This botanical site is blessed with an
astonishing variety of flora and fauna
that ranges over four climate zones; from
rich lowland forest and mountain oak,
coniferous forests and alpine meadow
plants to the stunted bushes of the summit
zone. The mountain is famous for its many
carnivorous plant and orchid species,
most notably Nepenthes rajah. It is also
home to a multitude of endemic animal
species, including the Kinabalu giant red
leech and Kinabalu giant earthworm.
The park headquarters is 88 kilometers
away from the capital city of Kota Kinabalu,
easily accessible via the highways over a
two-hour jorurney. The park is administered
by an organisation called Sabah Parks and
reservations are processed through Sutera
Sanctuary Lodges.
Gunung Mulu National Park is a remote area
covered in dense tropical rainforest

UPDATES
Malaysia’s Monsoon Affair
Every year, the monsoon season brings in
tropical rain showers and mighty winds,
making mostly the east coast of Malaysia a
wet and rainy affair – perfect conditions for
such events as the Terengganu Monsoon
Cup, Royal International Langkawi Regatta,
Sail Malaysia Passage to Langkawi and Raja
Muda Selangor International Regatta.
A brain-child of the Malaysian Prime Minister
Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, the
Terengganu Monsoon Cup has put Pulau
Duyung, Terengganu, on the sailing map
since it first hosted the race in 2005.
The Monsoon Cup is an event recognised by
the International Sailing Federation (ISAF).
It is also part of the Swedish Match Tour
which aims to unite the world’s best match
race regattas under one banner. Since it was
first organized in Malaysia, the Monsoon
Cup has attracted professional skippers with
experience gained at the Olympics and world
championships, bringing Malaysia much
international coverage and publicity for the
event.
Dubbed the “Formula One of Sailing,” the
Monsoon Cup has its moments of thrills and
drama. The match race pits two identical
boats in a circuit to compete in an intricate
one-on-one duel to gain the leading position
on a short racecourse. The first across the
line of two laps is the winner. The short route
means the races are quick, thus placing
emphasis on boat handling and knowledge
of tactics and rules.
The Monsoon Cup is happening from 3 to 7
December and for more information log on
to www.monsooncup.com.my
From 4 to 10 January 2009, the island of
Langkawi will host the Royal Langkawi
International Regatta (RLIR). Participants
will race in the waters at Kuah Harbour (near
Tanjung Lembang) in what is called fleet
racing. Unlike the match race concept of
Terengganu Monsoon Cup, fleet racing is a
race between the same kinds of boats.
RLIR will be a five-day event and there are
about 30 participants from all around the
world competing for the following trophies:
The Prime Minister's Challenge Trophy, The
Lada-IRC Challenge Trophy, The Langkawi
Sports Trophy, The Malaysian Multihull
Challenge Cup and The RLYC Commodore's
Challenge Cup. For more information, log
on to www.langakawiregatta.com.
From Port Klang to charming Pangkor island,
then onwards to Penang before finally
making a grand stop at Langkawi are the
skippers of the Raja Muda Selangor
International Regatta (RMSIR).
To be held from 14 to 22 November, RMSIR
has created a name for itself as a reputable
offshore passage racing regatta in the
region. Once again, the Royal Selangor
Yacht Club will host this keelboat sailing
regatta.
Raja Muda, as it is fondly known, is among
the most challenging regattas due to its
seven-race format, a true test for yachtsmen
and their crew. There are three passage races
– from Port Klang to Pangkor, from Pangkor

to Penang and from Penang to Langkawi.
Each involves racing overnight through
widely varying weather conditions from
tropical squalls to tidal currents, overcoming
sand bars and complicated directional wind
changes.
Over 400 sailors and 45 yachts from Hong
Kong, China, Singapore, Thailand,
Philippines, Australia, New Zealand, and
Europe are expected to take part this year, a
record number of entries in terms of head
count and boats alone.
The week-long race will see yachtsmen in the
racing class competing for the coveted Raja
Muda Cup, which will be given away at the
prize giving ceremony at Royal Langkawi
Yacht Club. Get results, ranking and also a
glimpse of the action at www.rmsir.com.my.
Another big-scale yachting event that will
take place in November is the Sail Malaysia
Passage to Langkawi. This unique yachting
rally event covers approximately 3,000
nautical miles over four countries and two
continents with more than 250 yachts
involved, spanning over five months.
A collaborative effort by PassionAsia Sdn.
Bhd, Sail Malaysia and Sail Indonesia, this is
the largest annual sailing event in Asia. The
journey starts in Darwin, Australia, continues
through the Indonesian Archipelago, and
navigates its way towards Malaysia.
The Malaysian leg of the rally includes stops
at Danga Bay, Johor (14-16 Nov); Lumut
International Yacht Club, Perak (26-28
Nov); Tanjong City Marina, Penang (3-5
Dec); and Telaga Harbour Marina, Rebak
Marina and Royal Langkawi Yacht Club,
Langkawi (26-30 Dec).
The annual Pineapple Festival will be
celebrated once again in Sarikei, Sarawak,
from 22- 24 November.
Sarikei is famous for its pineapples as
the city lies in the centre of an agricultural
area. In fact, right in the middle of the town,
at the waterfront, stands a five-metre tall
pineapple declaring this fact.
Introduced in the year 2004, the event is
usually held at the Sarikei Civic Centre.
During this festival, various classes of
pineapple are judged for its sweetness,
shape, colour and appearance. Among the
pineapples assessed are the Nanas Madu
(Sweet Pineapple), Nanas Sawi and Nanas
Paun.
Taman Negara Eco-Challenge
The Taman Negara Eco-Challenge (TNEC)
is back and tougher than ever! Running,
climbing and rafting challenges over a
150km course will test the physical and
mental endurance of participants over three
days. Cash prizes of more than RM30,000,
trophies and medals (and bragging rights!)
await the winners.
After the flag-off at Cameron Highlands,
an otherwise peaceful mountain retreat,
teams will run for 62km from Tanah Rata
to Pos Lemai. The next day doesn’t get any
easier with a trek up the trans-Titiwangsa
range in a 14-hour agonising climb. This is
followed by a tough, rafting challenge the
next day.
Hosted for the third year, TNEC has been
dubbed an extreme challenge and online
sports magazine, Extreme 365, had this
to report about last year’s edition:
“Three days. Dense jungle. Twenty-six
thigh-crushing hills. All day. No breaks.
“Dubbed a "minimalist" competition, the
runners had only short sleeve shirts, running
shorts, tracking shoes and practically no
survival equipment.
Powerman Malaysia
“On the first day, a torrential downpour
smacked the runners in the face. With a
2,187m climb ahead of them, the runners
had it pretty tough.”
Definitely not for the faint-hearted!
DESTINATION
Malaysia, a lover’s paradise
Of all the significant events that would take
place in one’s life, nothing is more important
than one’s wedding day. The fact that it is the
moment that you seal a relationship with the
promise to love one another for the rest of
your life makes the wedding day an event that
is sacred and meaningful.
It’s only natural then that the affair is
planned for with care and much thought,
months, even years, in advance. Even before
reaching the legal marrying age, little girls
have already dreamed up their perfect
weddings. It may be a celebration by the
beach at sunset, or in a ballroom filled with
pink roses and balloons. It may be a fairy-tale
garden party or a romantic do on a private
cruise witnessed only by the twinkling stars.
With its varied landscapes and scenic settings,
Malaysia is the perfect backdrop for those
wanting a wedding ceremony that will be
remembered forever. Couples can choose to
exchange their vows on an island, by the
beach, up in the cool climates of the
highlands, amidst verdant green nature,
in the clear blue waters of the sea, or in the
historical heart of the country.
Malaysia is blessed with many beautiful
islands that dot its shores. Among them are
Langkawi, Redang, Tioman, Pangkor and
Perhentian islands, with beaches that inspire
romance and clear blue waters that sweep
gently to the shores. Beach weddings at
sunset may be typical but couples can also
opt for a cruise wedding where they can sail
away into the sunset as they exchange vows.
In the case of Langkawi, a thrilling glide over
the tree-tops of Raya Mountain can also be
arranged for those looking for a wedding
ceremony that’s literally off-the-beaten track.
Even though Malaysia is very much a
tropical country with warm weather all-yearround,
one can still choose to hold a wedding
in the cooler climes of the highlands.
Frasers Hill, Cameron Highlands and
Genting Highlands are located on the main
mountain range of Peninsular Malaysia with
temperatures dipping between 16 and 21
degrees Celcius. Here, garden weddings
are a favourite with the rolling green hills
as a witness to the sacred union.
With Malaysia’s kaleidoscope of cultures
and traditions, couples may want to exchange
vows the way Malaysians themselves typically
do it. Malay weddings will see the bride and
groom being treated like a king and queen
for the day, complete with the “royal” dais
and traditional martial arts and cultural
performances fit for the royal courts. Guests
then take turns to “bless” the union with
rosewater and fragrant potpourri.
For a more oriental experience, couples can
get dressed up in traditional Chinese wedding
costumes and complete the intricate Chinese
tea ceremony with friends and family. Indian
temple weddings are also a colourful affair
as bride and groom are celebrated with music
and flowers by guests dressed in extravagant
sarees of modern design. At the Sarawak
Cultural Village, wedding ceremonies can be
organized according to the traditional Iban,
Bidayuh or Orang Ulu way. Similarly, the
Whatever it may be, the wedding day,
from dream to concept to the actual I-do’s,
is something every girl dreams about…and
plans for to the single, most minute detail.
The party favours have to be decided.
The caterers have to be hired. The guest list,
identified. The invitations, printed and mailed
out. The menu, selected. The food, tasted.
The music, picked. The dress, customdesigned
and tailored. In other words,
everything has to be perfect for the wedding
day. And nothing makes it more perfect than
the right choice of setting for that special day.

DESTINATION
It’s all quite simple:
Having your wedding and honeymoon in
Malaysia is quite a straightforward affair.
However, as each country has its own set of
wedding procedures for couples looking to
hold their ceremonies outside their home
countries, there are certain legal and
immigration criteria that you need to fulfil.
Start by researching your own country’s
marriage requirements. For the requirements
on the Malaysian side, check with the
Malaysian diplomatic mission in your country.
Be prepared to spend a minimum of seven
consecutive days in Malaysia to facilitate the
necessary arrangements.
However, to make things simpler, many
couples decide to register their marriage
officially in their home countries and only
hold a wedding reception in Malaysia. This,
too, is possible, and doesn’t require too many
procedures.
Monsopiad Cultural Village in Sabah caters
to Kadazan-styled weddings, complete with
traditional trimmings.
Most of the hotels and resorts in Malaysia
offer wedding packages that include airport
transfers, welcome drinks, honeymoon suites,
breakfast in bed, candle-light dinners,
photography services, wedding cakes,
hairstyling and make-up sessions, banquet
dinners, entertainment, decorations and
other wedding niceties. Some will even
tailor-make the event according to the
couple’s needs. With the help of a wedding
planner, all the details of the wedding, like
booking of dates, coordinating food and
beverage details and arranging
accommodation for guests can easily be
sorted out. A feature of many resorts and
hotels in Malaysia these days is the in-house
spa – to ease away the wedding jitters that
one may have before the ceremony.
After the wedding vows have been safely
and lovingly exchanged, it’s only fitting to
extend one’s stay in Malaysia for the
honeymoon period. Again, the choice that
Malaysia presents is varied and the hotel or
resort that arranged the wedding ceremony
would be able to arrange for a honeymoon
package as well.
Some couples may wish to retire to a private For the best information, work with your travel
world of their own making. The islands agent and the Malaysian Embassy or High
beckon with miles of secluded beaches that Commission in your home country.
the newlyweds can claim as their very own.
Indulge in a spa experience specially meant
for couples who cannot bear to be separated
even for a moment! Or do absolutely nothing
but laze about in a villa right on the calm
waters of the sea, with a personal butler to
answer to your every beck and call!
Some couples, may want to get right into the
action of Malaysian life. For them, the
pulsating ambience of the modern cities of
Kuala Lumpur and Penang will keep them
occupied day and night. Spend the day in
some of the most modern shopping malls that
offer high quality branded products at
affordable prices. And retire to the city’s many
dance clubs in the evenings for a taste of
Malaysia’s weekend pastime.
Indeed, whether couples intend to exchange
wedding vows or kindle romance on their
honeymoon, Malaysia is the perfect place for
it. With the wide variety of choice for wedding
and honeymoon packages, Malaysia will
certainly make the experience memorable for
many more anniversaries to come.

Bangsar Village 1 & 2
Located along Jalan Telawi, the Bangsar
Village shopping centre has grown from a
small and friendly community shopping mall
to a vibrant centre to fill the entertainment
and leisure hours of those within the Klang
Valley.
It started with the opening of Bangsar Village
1 in July 2004 – a small, neighbourhood
mall with a good mix of independent retailers
and franchise operators that seemed to cater
to the young, up-market, mostly expatriate
community in hip and trendy Bangsar.
Among the retail mix here are a general
supermarket, an organic supermarket cum
deli, coffee chains, pharmacies, a bookstore,
restaurants and cafes, as well as children’s
toy shops and play centres. There are many
retail kiosks operating at Bangsar Village 1
featuring quaint and charming pieces
of imported children’s clothes (at affordable
prices) and handmade embroidered throws
and quilts.
The success of Bangsar Village 1 prompted
the development of another wing, Bangsar
Village 2, which opened in January 2007.
Bangsar Village 2 is slightly different
from its twin. It is a boutique shopping
centre targeted to the fashion lovers around
the world. It has some renowned designer
names within its fashion retail mix, besides a
good selection of outlets offering home
décor, books, health and beauty services,
and paintings. Brands such as Ted Baker,
Raoul, Massimo Dutti, Liz Claiborne, Mexx,
Zara, Birkenstock, Aldo, Nike, Crabtree &
Evelyn, and Royal Doulton can be found in
the new wing.
Occasionally, the shopping centre organizes
thematic events and exhibitions. Among the
more interesting ones was an exhibition and
sale of antique pieces salvaged from
shipwrecks in the Malaysian waters. The
Treasures of the South China Sea featured
fine antique ceramics dating back to several
hundreds of years old including rare blue
and white porcelain, qingbai ware and
antique celadon.
Both Bangsar Village 1 and 2 have a good
selection of dining outlets ranging from
Japanese to Italian, seafood to Chinese,
and more.
Hooked on fishing in Malaysia
Malaysia is well known for its many angling
or fishing arenas, but there is just one thing
lacking. Exposure. Not many are aware of
these places or are keen in this sport except
for the enthusiast.
Malaysian waters are home to a variety
of fish both inland and in the deep seas.
The tropical seas have Black Marlins, Blue
Marlins, Striped Marlins and Pacific Sailfish.
Tuna – Yellowfin, Bigeye and Dogtooth – are
found in the deep waters around atolls and
drop offs. Wahoo, Giant Trevally, Cobia,
Narrowbarred Mackerel, Dorado, Barracuda,
Escola, Rainbow Runner, Greater Amberjack
day, with specimens reaching to over 60
kilogrammes. This may be the only place
in the world to be called sailfish capital,
where massive congregations of sailfish
can be found.
The island of Tioman, Pahang, is located
close to the country’s Black Marlin territory.
Although rarely exceeding 100 kilogrammes
in this area, they can be great fun on lighter
tackles.
Malaysia’s rivers and lakes, too, are great
destinations for fishing. The man-made lakes
of Malaysia, in particular Lake Kenyir
(380 sq km) in Terengganu and Lake
Temenggor (150 sq km) in Perak,
set against the tropical rainforest backdrop,
are favourites among anglers. Originally
developed to harness hydroelectric power,
the two lakes are now popular tourist
attractions and provide a fishing challenge
to enthusiasts.
Here, there are over 250 species of
freshwater fish but anglers come in search
of the Giant Snakehead, a powerful and
ferocious predator – they grab baits or lures
and dash to the nearest physical structure,
leaving your line in a tangled mess! Fast
Queen Fish
Sailfish
Cobia
Queen Fish
and big sharks add to the variety of game
fish to be found.
The deep, nutrient-rich waters of the Spratlys,
off the coast of Sabah, offer a virtual fishing
paradise. This deepwater area, with coral
atolls rising from depths of 1,000 to 2,000
metres, is Malaysia’ premier saltwater game
fishing destination. With strict numbers of
boats and anglers permitted at any on time,
the Spratlys provide a world-class
deep-fishing challenge to those who are
passionate about the sport.
The islands offshore from Rompin, Johor,
are playgrounds of the Pacific Sailfish.
These shallow waters produce specimen fish
on fly, troll and bait. Up to 20 or more fish
have been taken, by a single angler, in one
Cobia
flowing waters and deep pools around the
area are home to the Malaysian Red Mahseer
and Hampala Barb.
Accommodation for anglers is usually on
houseboats that ply the lakes – they provide
relaxing accommodation and fishing.
Other choices are in chalets and basic
wooden rooms.
Fishing in certain parts of Malaysia is
under the supervision of park authorities
while several fish species (such as the
Malaysian Bonytongue) are protected under
the Convention on International Trade in
Endagered Species (CITES) and
catch-and-release techniques are observed.
organizations who can develop a package
to suit your group’s particular needs, i.e.
saltwater or freshwater fishing, etc. The main
season for all fishing is between March
and October. A properly-organised fishing
package encompassing local knowledge
may prove the difference between success and
failure.
For those who want to take part in competitions
or just be a part of the audiences, look out for
'Twin City' promotion
unveiled
Tourism Malaysia in collaboration with
the Singapore Tourism Board and Singapore
Airlines together launched the `Twin City`
package in Dubai recently.
The exclusive travel package valid until
November 2008 is designed to boost the
Middle East visitor traffic to Malaysia and
Singapore. It would enable visitors from the
Middle East and the United Arab Emirates
(U.A.E.) to capture the very best of Singapore
and Malaysia – from city attractions and
first-rate shopping to tropical rainforests
and pristine beaches. Based on recent visitor
arrival figures, many Middle Eastern travellers
heading to South-East Asia would combine
their trips with stopovers in both, Malaysia
and Singapore.
The convenient five-day, four-night package
includes air fare and hotel accommodation in
Singapore and either Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi
or Penang, starting at only 2,490 dirham
(about RM2, 350).
Malaysia charms Sri
Lankan tourists
Some 31,000 Sri Lankan tourists visited
Malaysia last year, but optimistic Malaysian
tourism promoters say the figure could
multiply in future, as more visitors
from the island are keen to land in Kuala
Lumpur (KL).
To achieve the target, Malaysia is stepping
up efforts to woo more Sri Lankan tourists
to its shores.
Tourism flow from Sri Lanka to Malaysia
grew by 58.6 percent and until this July,
24,000 people have visited Malaysia.
Malaysia is ready to offer a myriad of
holiday packages to Sri Lankans.
Several leading Malaysian hoteliers and
tour operators were in Colombo to promote
the country's attractive destinations to the
Sri Lankan travel industry.
present shopaholics with 37 days of retail
provides tourists and locals alike with an
opportunity to ‘shop and save’ as most items
from apparels, accessories and home décor
to holiday packages as well as leisure and
dining activities will be on offer at
discounted prices throughout the sale
period.
To kick-start the whole event, a press
event, the list of activities and promotional
