JUNIOR COLLEGE News
Friday 3 August Year 4 embarked on a journey through Maryborough's museums and enjoyed learning
about what was at the beginning stages of creating our great community: Immigration. Did you know
that over 21 000 migrants landed here in the port of Maryborough from 1862 till 1900? Some of the
countries that they came from included Germany, Scotland, Ireland, Scandinavian, Denmark, Norway,
England, Wales and the States. We have just completed our own family trees discovering which
countries our family originally migrated from also. At the end of the term we are looking forward to
turning our classroom into museums and setting up our own displays. Miss Davie, Mrs Wendt and the
Year 4's.
During the recent
Students completed
Year 8 Math Quiz
The Year 8 Quiz is a team competition with students
working as a team to solve difficult mathematical
problems. The Quiz has five sections: Estimation; Team
fast response questions; Problem solving; short answer;
and the History of Mathematics & General knowledge.
8 students from Riverside attended the evening trying
their skills against 17 other teams. Our teams came 7 th
and 8 th in the competition and are to be congratulated on
their amazing efforts. A huge congratulations to Curtis
Muller, Rachel Hoodcamp, Luke Stronach, Isabelle Ford,
Robert Dance, Alysha Holder, Sanam Kooner and Madison
Lawton.
Slum Survivor
As part of our study on Afghanistan, Year 8 participated in a
day long simulation of life as refugees. Our day began with the
students being locked out of their classrooms due to 'bomb
damage' and being herded to buses by enemy soldiers.
Students were shipped to the Aldershot scout grounds where
they marched along a dirt road carrying what little we
scavenged from our destroyed 'homes'. Students were placed
in family groups, some not being able to read or speak English,
some too young to be helpful or too old and impaired to help
the family in any way. The families had to scavenge enough
materials to build a shelter that not only accommodated their
entire family but also protected them from the elements –
especially the freak rainstorm that came in the form of
buckets of water. Students then had to follow limited
instructions to make paper bags to sell in order to purchase
food, 1 family had a single mandarin between 7. Our refugees
had to interpret some signs to provide their family with life
saving medication, unfortunately some family members were
poisoned by the wrong medication others waited too long but
most were saved. Points were tallied and 1 family dined on
pizza whilst others dined on kidney beans, rice and
chapatti. Our pizza family were generous enough to share 2 of
their 4 pizzas with the other families. An amazing day was had
by all and whilst the students got a small taste of life as a
refugee they also showed compassion and amazing teamwork
to make the day a huge success. At the end of the day we all
went home to our beautiful school where our full and yummy
lunch boxes were waiting with the knowledge that our family
was safe and we were loved but also with the heart‐breaking
knowledge that over 1 billion people on our planet have to
survive in slums around the world with insufficient food,
limited water and basic shelter.
Year 8 HPV Team
For the first time Riverside will be entering a Year 8 HPV team.
In the past, the competition has only been offered to Year 9 and above.
Mrs Harvey, Mr Kielly and Mrs Holder are very excited to be a part of the
Riverside Rollers and are looking forward to watching the students shine
on the day. Please wish Josiah Nehow, Thomas Farmer, Reilly Hadden,
MatthewPerry, Isabelle Ford, Rachel Hoodcamp, Alysha Holder, Philip
Bell, Daniel Lloyd, Aiden Shehab‐Ash and Hamish Cook good luck and
safe travels. Teams are still looking for more sponsorship, if you can help
please phone the College.
Big Winners and High Achievements
Four hard working
Riverside senior students
represented the school
at the recent PICSE
(Primary Industry Centre
for Science Education)
Science Investigation
Awards held at Xavier
College, Tuesday 14
August. Most of the
local high schools in the
area were represented,
with 26 student’s work
on display. This was an
opportunity for senior
students to show case
their extended
experimental investigations for Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Students presented their work on a poster board
and also had to talk with Judges about their investigation. They were judged by an independent teacher and
representatives from industry and the judging was then moderated with the entire judging panel.
This was a great experience for students to present their work to the public and be judged on its merits.
This was the first time the event was held in the region and the first time students from Riverside attended.
I’m both excited and very proud to say that the work of all 4 students was well received by the judging panel
and Riverside scooped the pool of big prizes on offer.
The deserving students were:
Dana Bolland Yr 11 Chemistry – Highly commended with a prize of $50
Caleb Klein Yr 12 Biology – 3 rd overall with a prize of $100
Ryan Rach Yr 12 Biology – 2 nd overall with a prize of $200
Andrew Dalton Yr 12 Biology, took the major prize of $500, winning the Senior Science Award for the
night with his investigation on “Drugs and Daphnia – the effect of drugs on the heart rate of daphnia”.
This was a fabulous result for all 4 students. Their teachers and all at the College are very proud of their
achievements.
GENERAL News
A group of Riverside students will join together to
support the 40 Hour Famine this coming weekend.
We hope to raise over $1000 this year for the 40
Hour Famine and welcome support from the
community.
Started by World Vision, the 40 Hour Famine is one
of Australia’s biggest youth events and this year it
is expected that around 300,000 young people
from all over Australia will participate.
From 17 to 19 August participants will give up
something important to them for 40 hours to raise
awareness and funds to fight global hunger.
Please give those who you know are participating
your encouragement and if possible your financial
support.
ACCOUNTS OVERDUE
Please note that if you have not paid your Term 3
Account, it is now overdue.
(Unless you have made a payment plan with Janita or Jenny.)
Don’t forget, if you are paying your fees off, they
must be paid in full no later than Thursday 6
December.
OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD
It is the time of year when we are again encouraging families to
become involved in the ‘Operation Christmas Child’ project.
This is overseen by Samaritan’s Purse; an international,
interdenominational Christian Relief Organisation led by
Franklin Graham. Operation Christmas Child encourages people
of all ages to fill shoe boxes with toys and small gifts to be
delivered to children who are victims of war, persecution,
poverty, disease and natural disasters. Last year, over 300,000
boxes were sent from Australia and New Zealand to countries
such as Papua New Guinea, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Fiji,
Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands. Over 2,000 boxes were sent
from the Maryborough/Hervey Bay area.
You may like to fill a box at home or students may enjoy filling
one together as a class activity.
Whose life will your shoe box change this year?
IMPORTANT POINTS:
Please use average size shoe boxes (30cm by 18cm). You may
use your own or there will be boxes available at the College.
Decorate boxes with Christmas paper but the lid must be
wrapped separately so that it can be removed. Seal box with
a rubber band.
Decide whether the box is for a boy or girl and which age group.
Fill the box with gifts appropriate to sex and age group.
Coloured leaflets with a list of suitable items, ‘Boy’ or ‘Girl’ label
and donation envelopes will be available from the College.
Take note of items that may not be included. There are changes
this year: no lollies, toothpaste, earrings, liquids, batteries,
playing cards (see leaflet for full details of exclusions).
Handling costs are $9.00. Donations can be made online. If you
choose to use cash or cheque, please use the envelope
provided and place INSIDE the box on TOP of the items.
Boxes may come in without donations or you may prefer to
make a donation only.
All boxes must be returned to the College by Wednesday 17
October. We look forward to receiving your boxes over the
next few weeks.
COLLEGE NOTICES
RIVERSIDE’S ‐ P & F ASSOCIATION
“Empowering OUR College Community Through Authentic Partnerships”
Update from Riverside Parents and Friends Committee:
Important Notice
Don’t forget, if you would like to see the P & F continue for the
remainder of the year (only 3 more meetings), then you need to
attend the next meeting. We would love to see some new faces.
Please feel free to come along and give your ideas. The next meeting
will be held on Wednesday 29 August from 7:30pm in the Prep Room
at Riverside. During recent months the attendance at P & F meetings
has been dwindling, therefore a decision will need to be made at the
next meeting (29 August) as to whether we continue with the P & F for
the remainder of the year or start fresh in 2013. The P & F aims to
foster and promote a co‐operative caring relationship and sense of
community between all members of the College community. We help
to support parents and staff in the enrichment of their children’s
education whilst being a positive and supporting influence within our
College.
Tuckshop Helpers Thanks to all those families who have either
donated food, kitchen items or have been volunteering their time to
help out in the tuckshop. It is not too late if you want to donate some
items or help out, just contact the Tuckshop Co‐ordinator – Tanya
Boyce on 0478 124 224 to advise if you are able to assist. Don’t forget,
we now have a great ‘kiddies’ room in the tuckshop if you need to
bring along your younger children.
School Banking Did you know, that the Commonwealth’s School
Banking Program has been running since 1931. The program has
evolved over time and now includes some fun and engaging activities
to encourage children to save. One of these is the Rewards program.
Each time a child make a deposit, they receive a cool silver coloured
Dollarmites token which they can redeem for exclusive Dollarmites
rewards items such as moneyboxes, handballs, book lights to name a
few (need a total of 10 tokens for each reward). There are also some
cool competitions coming up in the future, so watch this space.
Pauls Collect a Cap Keep those caps coming in.....this promotion is still
running. Please if you drink any Pauls milk including Pauls Full Cream,
Smarter White, Trim, Rev, PhysiCAL Low and No Fat and Skinny Milk,
bring your caps into the school reception. Alternatively, you can drop
them into IGA on Alice Street (the old Andys) at the back where the
milk fridges are. Riverside will receive 10c for every cap which we will
use to purchase much needed resources for the school.
Woolworths Earn and Learn Promotion and Coles Sports Vouchers
Thank you to everyone who has sent in their stickers, sticker cards and
vouchers. We are currently in the process of tallying up our supply
and sending them off for verification. The school will then be able to
purchase a range of educational and sporting equipment for the
school.
DON’T FORGET OUR NEXT MEETING IS:
Wednesday 29 August from 7:30pm to 8:30pm in the Riverside
Prep Room. Please note the change of time to 7:30pm
Come along to the next meeting, let your voice be heard.
contact with certain foods. Therefore we request that where
possible, the following foods: Eggs, Peanuts and Seafood
be avoided at the College.
We value the well-being of each one in
our Riverside community, let’s make the
College a safe place for all.
Thank you!
Homework and Assignment Assistance
After School
Supervised by Mrs Downes and Mrs Slater on Tuesday
and Wednesday afternoons from 3 to 4 pm.
On Tuesday the venue is E‐Zone.
On Wednesday the venue is G Block (Mrs Slater’s
classroom).
This activity is open to students from Years 6 to 12
who want to use the time to work independently on
homework or assignments, and students who would
like some teacher assistance with their work. Please
support us by checking with your child/children
whether they have work to do and if they don't, make
the usual arrangements for them to go home at 3pm.
Head Lice are sneaky
little critters!
Please make sure that they have
not decided to hide in your hair.
Comb and check hair daily and treat
immediately if you find any
crawlies!!!
WASTE MANAGEMENT AT RIVERSIDE
Riverside students are asked to put their rubbish in
different bins in order for the College to better
manage our waste. 3 bins are available in eating
areas ‐ yellow top recycle bins (like the ones at home),
red top bins for garbage that can't be reused or
recycled, and small green top bins for food waste that
can be composted. Our aim is to
decrease our 'landfill' rubbish by 1/3, simply by
recycling and composting.
Please encourage your child/ren to put their
rubbish in the correct bins.
The Pyjama Foundation is the quintessential Australian children’s charity, providing modern‐day angels for
Australia’s families supporting our most vulnerable children. Volunteer Pyjama Angels are interviewed,
screened, trained and then matched with a child who has been referred to the program. Together they read
books aloud, play educational games and engage in other fun, learning based activities.
As well as improving the children’s learning outcomes, Pyjama Angels are broadening their networks in the
community. The success of the program is because of the beautiful, positive relationships that develop
between the child and their Pyjama Angel. If you would like further information on the Foundation or on
becoming a Pyjama Angel please contact Cressida Toorenburg on 0417761593 or at
