6 th Annual Primary Care Spring Conference Thursday, April 12, 2012 Medicare Closing of the “Doughnut Hole” 14 Prescription Drug Prices Under Negotiation In Debt Talks. • 6/21/2011 a bipartisan bill HR2248 by Peter Welch D-Vt and Jo Ann Emerson R-Mo "requiring the government to negotiate lower prescription drug prices in Medicare" has been reintroduced. Supporters say this will save up to $156 billion over 10 years without cutting into benefits. The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, representing drug companies, said Medicare already has drug discounts. Currently HHS is not allowed to negotiate drug costs with manufacturers; the proposed bill would require negotiation.
