MESSAGE FROM UNIVERSITY OF BAHRAIN PRESIDENT
Dr. Ebrahim Mohammed Janahi
University of Bahrain President
The University of Bahrain has hosted Careers Day for the past thirteen years, a
very significant event that aims to link the student community, with institutions
and businesses in both the public and private sectors within the Kingdom of
Bahrain.
Ever since I was honored by His Majesty King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa, King of
the Kingdom of Bahrain and Supreme President of the University of Bahrain to
assume my responsibility as President of the country‘s national university , I
have been committed to create an environment conducive to active coordination
and cooperation with the public and private sectors so we may learn from one
another as we develop programmes that provide the students of today with the
skills they need to be effective employees tomorrow.
The University receives and values important feedback from all participants in the
Careers Day programme in the various fields of industry, the oil business,
banking, communication services and numerous others. This day yields great
benefits for both our students and the community. One such benefit is to
highlight the available opportunities in the labour market by all effective sectors in
the Kingdom of Bahrain in one area and under one ceiling. The second advantage
is manifested by allowing students to gain real experience to interact with the
companies and employers through the services provided by the Careers Counseling
Office which offers continuous training workshops and courses to prepare
students to enter the world of business smoothly and easily. In addition,
representatives from companies and different sectors will introduce themselves to
the new batch of graduates.

MESSAGE FROM UNIVERSITY OF BAHRAIN PRESIDENT
We are very proud that many of our students are employed during interviews at this event. This is a great
opportunity in the light of the high competitiveness in the labour market. With the increasing number of graduates
in the Kingdom and outside, we are also proud to see that many companies prefer to employ our graduates as
opposed to those from outside. This gives us an indication that the University of Bahrain has efficiently
implemented successful academic programs and that it has built a strategic partnership with the labour market by
predicting its needs and developmental visions.
As I said earlier the University of Bahrain has been holding this event for thirteen consecutive years in order to
maintain continuous relations with the community. It opens avenues for our dear students to familiarize
themselves with the labour market requirements and opportunities available within. In addition, it strengthens
the close ties with employers and officials in the various sectors of the labour market.
The University of Bahrain is proud to be a partner in achieving the goals of our national Vision 2030. As a major
element of our strategic plan we have made a commitment to enhancing the quality of teaching and learning as we
prepare our graduates for Bahrain‘s workplace of the twenty-first century.
As we welcome you to the thirteenth Annual Careers Day at the University of Bahrain, I would like to thank you for
your interest and efforts on behalf of our students. We apologize to companies and institutes which expressed their
willingness to participate but due to limited space we could not accommodate them this year but hopefully we will
see them at future events.
I further wish to congratulate the Careers Counseling Office under the guidance of Vice President for
Community Services, Professor Ali Mansour Al-Shehab, all the staff , students and volunteers who have worked
tirelessly to make this event so successful. I also call upon all our dear students to seize this opportunity to avail
of this event that brings the labour market to the grounds of the University of Bahrain.
Dr Ebrahim Mohammad Janahi
University of Bahrain President

Dear students
MESSAGE FROM VP FOR COMMUNITY SERVICE & ALUMNI AFFAIRS
It gives me a great pleasure to welcome you to the Career Day 13, the University of
Bahrain‘s most successful event that annually receives attention and care of all
students and University of Bahrain‘s president Dr. Ebrahim Mohammed Ahmed
Janahi, who patrons the event.
This event, which I consider as students‘ best job source and generator, would not
have been possible without effort and planning by our work committee which
comprises staff and students. I hereby urge all to benefit from this opportunity
that is brought forward the biggest employers in the country on one floor.
We are really proud to have organized this event for more than a decade
consecutively. The event is a successful step towards achieving our aim which is to
create a strong connection between students' ambitions and employers' needs. I
hope the highest benefit for all and the very best of luck for our students.
Best regards,
Professor Dr. Ali Mansour Nasr Al Shahab
Ministers and government entities in the Kingdom of Bahrain are governed by the policies and
procedures set by the CSB; ensuring that all public sector bodies follow the overall civil service
policy.
One of the key mandates of the Bureau is to supervise, through a centralized system, public
sector employee affairs through a series of strategic approaches including constant supervisory
and consulting services along with a thorough management audit.
Research and development plays a vital part and is a key factor to the medium and long-term
strategy of the Civil Service Bureau. One of the pillars of success for CSB is to research and
study all related draft laws, proposed regulations, policies and procedures ensuring that the
necessary recommendations are suggested prior to any approval or change. The Bureau also
proposes changes or enhancements to public policies and strategies related to civil service.
On the other hand, CSB also implements new policies and amendments to the civil service law
accomplished through a detailed management audit system. The management audit monitors
the implementation of the civil service law and issues regular reports to the concerned bodies.
Moreover, the Civil Service Bureau is also responsible for studying and re-evaluating the
organizational charts for all government entities including job descriptions and roles and
responsibilities. A complete study and recommendation is then handed over to the legal team
for execution.
The CSB is also responsible for centralizing and managing all recruitment announcements,
process, examination, and selection process.
Training is also another key mandate – the CSB believes that education and vocational training
is a pillar of success in terms of enhancing employee skills and developing productivity. A
training program and strategy is deployed by the CSB based on the requirement of each
government entity.

Some are currently
hiring, most are not but
want to stay in contact
with University of
Bahrain students for
when they are hiring
again. It‘s a tough job
market out there. Don‘t
miss this networking
opportunity.
STUDENTS
Special thanks to Batelco
putting on this event is
greatly appreciated.
Careers Day Tips
Reasons to attend
Careers Day
Getting jobs should not
be the only reason for
you to attend this event.
However, Careers Day is
an excellent opportunity
to explore the wide range
of career options that
exist in the corporate
world and gather
information that can
boost your employability.
You will also be able to
collect data on companies
that you are interested
in. Regardless of your
major, year in college, or
future goals, there are
numerous benefits to
attending a Careers Day.

Some of the more
common reasons are
highlighted below:
• Increase your chances
of receiving an interview
with an employer
• Expand your network
of contacts
• Investigate positions,
occupations and/or
career fields. You could
pursue with your specific
major and background
• Learn more about
employers and their
available positions
• Receive sound job
search advice from
seasoned company
recruiter.
STUDENTS
What to expect at
Careers Day
Having realistic
expectations of Careers
Day is important in
succeeding in your career
search. The following list
can be helpful to identify
any misconceptions of
Careers Day:
• Employers expect
students to be prepared
(i.e. be professionally
dressed, ask thoughtful
questions, have a
polished CV)
• Employers expect to
interact with students
seeking employment as
well as employers
•Most recruiters are not
authorized to hire
candidates on the day of
the fair. With this in
mind, your goal should
be to land an interview -
not a job offer
•Employers‘ goals are to
be exposed to as many
job candidates as
possible.
• Take time to prepare
for the fair, you will get
as much out of this event
as you put into it
Note: Just attending the
fair is not enough; you
need to prepare for it.

a limited amount of time.
you started on road to
careers day success.

STEP 1
Prepare your CV and job
letters
What is a CV?
A CV or "Curriculum
Vitae" is essentially a
record of your personal,
educational and work
details, which
emphasizes the
experience, knowledge
and skills relevant to the
type of job you are
applying.
Its purpose is to secure
an interview where you
can sell yourself to a
prospective employer and
be offered a job.
STUDENTS
What should a CV look
like?
It should include:
• Personal Details
• Educational and
Qualifications
• Employment/Work
Experience
• Interests, Hobbies &
Activities
Writing Your CV
CV Content
Heading: Make sure your
name is the most obvious
piece of information on
your CV, Include local
and/or permanent
address and phone
number, list email if you
check it daily.
Example:
Curriculum Vitae
Ali Mohammed Hassan
Address: House No. 1111
Road No. 2222 Block No. 333
Contact: Mobile: 367777777
Home: 17777777
Email:
aabbcc23@hotmail.com
STUDENTS
Personal Details: If you
write your name in the
heading there is no need
to write it here, write
your date of birth,
nationality, marital
status and passport
number.
Example:
Personal Detail:
Nationality: Bahraini
Date of Birth: 18/8/1988
Marital Status: Single
C.P.R. No: 880808800
Passport No.: 78455
Objective: An objective
gives your CV focus,
credibility and direction.
It should be specific
enough to tell the
employer the kind of
work you seek and/or the
type of industry or
organization you will
consider.
The Value of Career
Objectives
Your career objective is
the opening act of your
curriculum vitae, setting
the stage for the content
that follows.

Its function is to offer a
rationale for the
submission of your CV to
the recipient, by defining
the job you want to
acquire, and highlighting
the qualities that make
you ideal to attain it.
If your curriculum vitae
fails to start with a career
objective, the reader may
well infer that you either:
a. do not know what
work you want;
Or
b. lack the initiative
and/or intelligence to get
your objective across.
STUDENTS
It's certainly true that a
career objective
statement, short as it is,
often proves the most
difficult curriculum vitae
component to write.
Don't be too disheartened
by this—the final rewards
will outweigh the initial
problems you encounter.
By beginning your pitch
with a clear, concise,
dynamic objective, you
will ensure that:
a. your CV is interpreted
the way you intended;
And
b. you emerge as
someone whose
aspirations are clearly
defined, and whose
capabilities support their
goals.

hobbies, and like other
CV sections, your
hobbies must support the
all-important goal of
getting the interview.
A well thought out Hobby
Section won‘t get you the
job, but it can send a
strong message to a
potential employer, and
confirm that you are the
right type of person for
the role.
For example, for a job
that requires strong team
working skills, you could
show that your
personality would be a
good fit by including
outgoing and teamoriented
hobbies and
interests on your CV.
Football, Bingo,
Basketball and other
team related sports could
all reveal the more
extroverted side of your
personality. You may also
choose to leave out solo
hobbies or hobbies that
involve just one or two
people, such as tennis,
chess, reading, and
writing.

Example:
Interest, Hobbies &
Activities:
• Climbing
• Voluntary work
• Watching or playing sport
• Painting
• Fishing
• Boating or sailing
• Collecting stamps and coins
• Cookery
• Dressmaking Knitting
• Maintaining your car
instruments
• Rambling
• Potholing
• Motor racing
• Pottery
• Photography
• Swimming
• Writing poetry or stories
STUDENTS
How to sell your skills
on your CV….?
Its widely acknowledged
that having a degree is no
longer enough to secure
you a job, and this is set
to increase with
increasing numbers of
the population entering
higher education.
Employers are asking
more to what students
have at University
outside of their degrees,
and those who have
taken part in student
activities have a huge
advantage when it comes
to applying for jobs.
Remember, it‘s not just
about having the skills,
it‘s about being able to
sell them well to potential
employers when writing
your CV, filling in
application forms, and at
interviews.
• Always put yourself in
the position of the
employer – What would
you want to know?
• Once you have written
your CV or application,
go through and write ―so
what?‖ next to
everything. If it isn‘t
relevant, take it out.

• Show that as well as
picking up new skills you
are able to reflect on your
skills and invest in your
own personal
development.
• Explain how you have
used and can use a skill,
for example confidently,
positively, thoughtfully,
diplomatically,
responsibly, sensitively.
Remember, when
applying for jobs, think
about it as a marketing
exercise with you as the
product and the employer
as a customer. Really
sell yourself and your
skills to your potential
employer – why should
they want you more than
anyone else?
STUDENTS
Many students and
graduates seriously
underestimate the skills
they have and struggle
when asked to provide
evidence of these. It may
help to review your skills
from a number of
different angles. One way
is to look at the skills
required in different parts
of your life, which may
divide up roughly as
follows:
* Study * Volunteering
* Part-time job
* Hobbies * Home
'power' or action words
in your CV or Resume is
essential to promoting
your skills and
experience.
Starting your sentences
with action verbs
immediately highlights
the skill used and
focuses the reader's
attention, e.g.
needs to be someone who
can comment on what
you have done in the
recent past. So if you are
still at university, or have
recently graduated, it is
usual to name one of
your professors, Head of
Department, lecturers or
tutors as references.
whether to include
The Cover Letter
A cover letter is a letter
that that you send to
accompany your CV
when you apply for job,
whether advertised or
when you are sending an
unsolicited application.
Do not over look this tool
as it can be a great asset
in your job hunt.
There are different
types of job related
letters :
Letter of inquiry: In this
type of query you are
enquiring about possible
job opportunities that fit
your skills. You have to
give a general area you
are interested in working
in.
STUDENTS
A Letter of Inquiry can
help you uncover the
hidden job market.
Sometimes these cover
letters are called
marketing letters.
A letter of inquiry should
be followed up with a
phone call as this will
increase your chance of
getting your "foot in the
door". Hopefully such a
phone call can lead to a
meeting or interview.
Good Letters of inquiry
Inform the reader why
you are writing within the
first sentence.
An Overview
• A cover letter is sent
with your CV. It can
make the difference
between being
successful in your job
search or not.
• Cover letters are
generally not read
during the first
candidate selection, but
usually they will be
read when the
candidates have been
short listed. Do not
waste such an
opportunity.
• Always include a cover
letter even if the job ad
does not specify that
one is needed. Your
cover letter should not
be a copy of your CV.
Specify some of your
cover letter
achievements and be
sure you know how to
handle Cover Letter
weakness. (Uncertain
as to what you're trying
to say here).
• A cover letter is a way of
showing your writing
and reporting skills.
Your cover letter
should be customized
per employer. However,
if you are sending a lot
of CVs, this task could
prove impossible. Try
instead to have a cover
letter per industry or
per area.
• Do not mention salary
in your cover letter. If
the job ad requests
your expected salary
then mention a range
rather than a specific
amount

Parts of the Cover
Letter …
Introduction
• Indicate why you are
writing to them (job
posting, article, career
fair, networking
account, area of
interest).
• Mention why you want
to work for the
company or what
interests you about the
position.
• Demonstrate
knowledge of the
organization.
STUDENTS
Body
• Sell the skills &
abilities you have as
required for the
position (be careful not
to reiterate your entire
resume).
• Back skills up with
specific examples
• State why you would be
a good fit
Close
• Thank them
• Request an interview or
meeting and indicate
how you can be
contacted.
• If you are seeking job
opportunities in the
hidden job market, it is
strongly recommended
you indicate how and
when you will contact the
employer in order to
follow up.
Cover Letter Tips:
• Always send a cover
letter with your resume
if unable to hand it to
the person doing the
hiring.
• Should be addressed to
a specific person –
never use ―To whom it
may concern‖

• Should be typed and on
same paper as your CV.
• Should be attractive,
well laid out, and kept
to one page.
• Write a different cover
letter for each job you
apply for – nothing
worse than a form
cover letter.
• Construct your cover
letter thinking about
what that particular
employer is looking for,
by using the job
posting or company
information.
STUDENTS
Application Forms
Employers use
application forms as an
easy way to find
candidate information in
the same location on all
applications. Do not
make it difficult for them.
Here are a few tips when
filling out an application
form:
• Ensure you read the
application form over
thoroughly before
writing anything down.
This will make sure you
fill it out correctly and
you don‘t miss
anything.
• Answer all the
questions. If a
question doesn‘t apply
to you, write in ‗not
applicable‘ so they
know you didn‘t miss
it.
• NEVER write ―see my
CV‖, fill everything out
in as much detail as
possible
• Don‘t forget to sign the
application form.

All cover letters should:
Explain why you are
sending a resume.
Don't send a resume
without a cover letter.
Don't make the reader
guess what you are
asking for; be specific:
Do you want a summer
internship opportunity,
or a permanent position
at graduation; are you
inquiring about future
employment possibilities?
Tell specifically how
you learned about the
position or the
organization
a flyer posted in your
department, a web site, a
family friend who works
at the organization. It is
appropriate to mention
the name of someone
who suggested that you
write.

Convince the reader to
look at your resume.
The cover letter will be
seen first.
Therefore, it must be very
well written and targeted
to that employer.
Call attention to
elements of your
background
education, leadership,
experience — that are
relevant to a position you
are seeking. Be as
specific as possible, using
examples.
Reflect your attitude,
personality, motivation,
enthusiasm, and
communication skills.
STUDENTS
Provide or refer to any
information
specifically requested
in a job advertisement
that might not be covered
in your resume, such as
availability date, or
reference to an attached
STEP 2
The Interview
The interview is an
opportunity for both the
employer and the
applicant to gather
information. The
employer wants to know
if you, applicant, have
the:
• Skills
• Knowledge
• Self-confidence
• Motivation
At this point you can be
confident that the
employer saw something
of interest in your CV.
He or she also wants to
determine whether or
not you will fit in the
STUDENTS
organization‘s current
employees and
philosophy.
The interview is a twoway
exchange of
information. It is an
opportunity for both
parties to make
themselves. The
employer is selling the
organization to you, and
you are marketing your
skills, knowledge, and
personality to the
employer.
The interview Process
1. The initial interview
can be screening
interview either on
the telephone with
the hiring
authority or
personnel, or face-toface
with personnel.
2. Face-to-face with the
immediate
supervisor, peers,
and sometimes
personnel.
3. Final interviewsometimes
with just
the hiring authority,
but usually will
include vicepresidents,
presidents, or owners
of the company.
4. This interview could
also be followed by
testing:
• Physical
• Written test
• Proof of employment
eligibility.

Objectives of the Job
Interview
1. To decide whether or
not to make you a job
offer.
2. To examine your
work history and
educational
background, your
strengths and
accomplishments .
3. To evaluate your level
of motivation, values,
attitude and
personality.
Types of Interview
All job interviews have
the same objective, but
employers reach that
objective in a variety of
ways.
STUDENTS
You might enter the room
expecting to tell stories
about your professional
successes and instead
find yourself selling the
interviewer a bridge or
editing code at a
computer. One strategy
for performing your best
during an interview is to
know the rules of the
particular game you are
playing when you walk
through the door.
The Screening
Interview
Companies use screening
tools to ensure that
candidates meet
minimum qualification
requirements.
The Informational
Interview
Job seekers ostensibly
secure informational
meetings in order to seek
the advice of someone in
their current or desired
field as well as to gain
further references to
people who can lend
insight. During an
informational interview,
the jobseeker and
employer exchange
information and get to
know one another better
without reference to a
specific job opening.

STUDENTS
The Directive Style
In this style of interview,
the interviewer has a
clear agenda that he or
she follows unflinchingly.
Sometimes companies
use this rigid format to
ensure parity between
interviews; when
interviewers ask each
candidate the same series
of questions, they can
more readily compare the
results. Directive
interviewers rely upon
their own questions and
methods to tease from
you what they wish to
know.
You might feel like you
are being steam-rolled, or
you might find the
conversation develops
naturally. Their style
does not necessarily
mean that they have
dominance issues,
although you should
keep an eye open for
these if the interviewer
would be your supervisor.
The Meandering Style
This interview type,
usually used by
inexperienced
interviewers, relies on
you to lead the
discussion.
It might begin with a
statement like "tell me
about yourself," which
you can use to your
advantage.
The interviewer might ask
you another broad, openended
question before
falling into silence. This
interview style allows you
tactfully to guide the
discussion in a way that
best serves you.

The Stress Interview
Either employers view the
stress interview as a
legitimate way of
determining candidates'
aptness for a position or
someone has latent
maniacal tendencies. You
might be held in the
waiting room for an hour
before the interviewer
greets you. You might
face long silences or cold
stares. The interviewer
might openly challenge
your believes or
judgment. You might be
called upon to perform an
impossible task on the
fly-like convincing the
interviewer to exchange
shoes with you.
STUDENTS
The Behavioral
Interview
Many companies
increasingly rely on
behavior interviews since
they use your previous
behavior to indicate your
future performance. In
these interviews,
employers use
standardized methods to
mine information
relevant to your
competency in a
particular area or
position.
Depending upon the
responsibilities of the job
and the working
environment, you might
be asked to describe a
time that required
problem-solving skills,
adaptability, leadership,
conflict resolution, multitasking,
initiative or
stress management. You
will be asked how you
dealt with the situations.
The Audition
For some positions, such
as computer
programmers or trainers,
companies want to see
you in action before they
make their decision.

For this reason, they
might take you through a
simulation or brief
exercise in order to
evaluate your skills. An
audition can be
enormously useful to you
as well, since it allows
you to demonstrate your
abilities in interactive
ways that are likely
familiar to you. The
simulations and exercises
should also give you a
simplified sense of what
the job would be like. If
you sense that other
candidates have an edge
on you in terms of
experience or other
STUDENTS
qualifications, requesting
an audition can help level
the playing field.
The Group Interview
Interviewing
simultaneously with
other candidates can be
disconcerting, but it
provides the company
with a sense of your
leadership potential and
style. The group interview
helps the company get a
glimpse of how you
interact with peers-are
you timid or bossy, are
you attentive or do you
seek attention, do others
turn to you instinctively,
or do you compete for
authority?
The interviewer also
wants to view what your
tools of persuasion are:
do you use
argumentation and
careful reasoning to gain
support or do you divide
and conquer? The
interviewer might call on
you to discuss an issue
with the other
candidates, solve a
problem collectively, or
discuss your peculiar
qualifications in front of
the other candidates.

The Tag-Team
Interview
Expecting to meet with
Ms. Glenn, you might
find yourself in a room
with four other people:
Ms. Glenn, two of her
staff, and the Sales
Director. Companies
often want to gain the
insights of various people
when interviewing
candidates. This method
of interviewing is often
attractive for companies
that rely heavily on team
cooperation.
STUDENTS
Not only does the
company want to know
whether your skills
balance that of the
company, but also
whether you can get
along with the other
workers. In some
companies, multiple
people will interview you
simultaneously. In other
companies, you will
proceed through a series
of one-on-one interviews.
The Follow-up Interview
Companies bring
candidates back for
second and sometimes
third or fourth interviews
for a number of reasons.
Sometimes they just
want to confirm that you
are the amazing worker
they first thought you to
be. Sometimes they are
having difficulty deciding
between a short-list of
candidates. Other times,
the interviewer's
supervisor or other
decision makers in the
company want to gain a
sense of you before
signing a hiring decision.
The second interview
could go in a variety of
directions, and you must
prepare for each of them.

When meeting with the
same person again, you
do not need to be as
assertive in your
communication of your
skills. You can focus on
cementing rapport,
understanding where the
company is going and
how your skills mesh
with the company vision
and culture. Still, the
interviewer should view
you as the answer to
their needs. You might
find yourself negotiating
a compensation package.
Alternatively, you might
find that you are starting
from the beginning with a
new person.
STUDENTS
Other Types of the
interview
• Selection
interviewing:
its goal is to shortlist
only the qualified
candidates. Focus here
on presenting the facts
about your
qualifications rather
than building a friendly
relationships with the
interviewer
• One-to-one interview:
to test your matches
with the job and your
suitability to their work
environment, how you
will integrate with the
rest of the organization.
Focus on your
qualifications and build
good relationship with
the interviewer.
• Panel interview: where
many representatives
from the organization
will take the role of the
interviewer. Focus your
answer to the person
who is asking . Some
questions will test your
way of thinking rather
your final answer.
• Lunch interview:
conducted in a less
formal atmosphere on a
lunch meal. Be careful
for every move and
word you do or say.

Apply etiquette and
mannered behavior
while eating.
• Telephone interview:
to reduce the number
of candidates who are
invited to a personal
interview. Expect a
conversation about
your resume details.
Focus and keep your
information near the
phone. Ask them to
invite you to a personal
interview. And always
be prepared.
STUDENTS
Interview phases …
Phase (1) :
working with people.
• Present yourself in a positive and
confident manner
• Turn negatives into positives.
• Emphasize what you can do for the
company
problems.
• Thank the interviewer for his/her time
before leaving.
• Evaluate your performance immediately
after the interview
• Write a thank you letter for the
interviewer
• Wait for the reply or ask for it when the
time of waiting exceeds the limit
• Use the interviews as a part of you
contacts network

STUDENTS
The Selection Process
Well done! Your CV and
cover letter has worked
and you are now invited
to attend an interview.
Remember a job interview
not only tries out if you
can do the job, but also if
you are the best person.
Interviewers try to access
both aspects in the
interview process.
Job interviews can be as
straightforward as this:
Interview with a panel or individual
But increasingly many of you will face an interview process
containing some or all of the following elements:
Telephone Interview
Employer
Requirements
• Communication
Skills:
Oral and written,
including the ability to
listen as will as transmit.
Also includes
presentation skills.
Employers say these sills
are most noticeably
lacking in Graduates
applicants.
• Interpersonal/Social
Skills:
The capacity to establish
good working
relationships with
customers, clients,
colleagues is seen as of
STUDENTS
utmost importance in
almost all work roles, for
effective performance
within the organization
and competent
representation of the
organization with its
clientele.
• Organization Skills:
e.g. planning ahead,
meeting delaines;
managing self and others;
coordinating people,
activities( e.g. organizing
events whether work
related , social, etc).
• Problem analysis and
solution:
e.g. clarity and logic of
thought; capacity to
identify key issues and
reconcile conflict;
ingenuity in the creation
of solutions; effectiveness
under pressure; concern
with priorities.
• Intellect:
Judged by how effectively
mental ability is
transmitted into action.
• Leaderships:
Leadership potential is
important because it
assumed that most
graduates will eventually
take up senior positions.
• Team working:
Ability necessary to work
in formal and informal,
interdisciplinary, long
term and project-based
teams.

Adaptability:
circumstances. Breadth
of intellect, interests,
knowledge and attitudes
required for adoption to
changing demands.
• Technical Capability:
Capacity to acquire
technical skills required
for application of basic
management techniques
(e.g. statistics, data
analysis, scheduling,
computer applications,
etc).
STUDENTS
• Achievement:
Ability to set and achieve
goals for self ant others.
Employers frequently
need those who will help
move the organization
forward.
Overview
preparation
1. Know Yourself:
• What are your
strengths? What
are your
weaknesses?
• What are your
short-and long-term
goals?
• Evaluate yourself
in terms of the
position you seek.
• Formulate
responses by asking
the question: ―Why
should they hire
me?‖
• Remember that
you‘re there to sell
yourself and secure
a job offer.
2. Research the
Company:
• Research the
information about
the company.
• Utilize the library
to review annual
reports, trade
magazines and
newspaper articles.

STUDENTS
• The Internet offers
a wealth of company
information and
industry statistics.
Please visit the
company website.
• Know the
company‘s products
and services.
• Be prepared to tell
the interviewer why
their company
attractive to you.
3. Items to Bring to the
interview:
Your CV
• Review your CV
thoroughly and be
prepared to discuss
all points.
• Always bring a
copy of your CV
identical to the one
supplied to the
interviewer.
Other Items
• Bring a folder and
pen to the interview
to jot down notes.
• Prepare and
review your
questions as well as
specific responses.
• Bring directions to
the interview
location as well as
the interviewers
phone number in
case you are
running late.
4. Arrival at the
interview:
• Plan to arrive 15
minutes before the
interview.
• Allow adequate
time for traffic,
parking, and a last
minute appearance
check. If possible,
scout the location
the day before the
interview to avoid
last minute
problems. Being
late for the interview
may cost you the
job offer.
• Review your CV
and go in with
confidence.

Reasons why
Candidates
are Not Hired
1. Poor attitude: Many
candidates come
across as arrogant.
While employers can
afford to be selfcentered,
candidates
cannot.
2. Appearance: Many
candidates do not
consider their
appearance as much
as they should. First
impressions are
quickly made in the
first three to five
minutes. Review
appearance checklist.
STUDENTS
3. Lack of Research: It‘s
obvious when
candidates haven‘t
learned about the
job, company or
industry prior to the
interview. Visit the
library or use the
internet to research
the company, talk
with friends, peers
and other
professionals about
the opportunity
before each meeting.
4. Not having questions
to ask: Asking
questions shows your
interest in the
company and the
position.
Prepare a list of
intelligent questions
in advance.
5. Not readily knowing
the answers to
interviewers‘
questions. Anticipate
and rehearse answers
to tough questions
about your
background, such as
a recent termination
or and employment
gap. Practicing with
your spouse or a
friend before the
interview will help
you to frame
intelligent responses.

The 3 Steps of
Successful Interviews:
Preparation, Presentation,
and Practice
As a general rule,
interviews last between
20-30 mints so the time
to make the impact
needed to win the job is
brief! This means you
can‘t have a ―seat of the
pants‖ approach. Ask
any person who has an
unsuccessful interview
and they usually tell you
they tried to ―wing it‖.
Most people learn from
this the importance of
preparation.
Step 1
STUDENTS
Preparation
Research the Company:
―Not many applicants
had taken the time to
find out about us‖, said
one of the Graduate
Recruitment employers.
Research indicates lack
of company knowledge is
one of the most common
reasons for failure in an
interview. A common
question in job interview
is, ―why do you want to
work for us‖? and to
answer this you need to
know about the
company.
• What the company
does, location,
turnover, annual
reports, company
websites, corporate
profiles, business pages
and magazines, library
databases.
• Name of the Chief
Executive.
• Organizational
structure and culture.
• Products and services.
• Positions available in
different areas
• Main competitors
• Current business /
industry environment
in which they operate.
Note mergers, joint
ventures and awards.

• What does the position
involve?
• What competencies /
skills are necessary for
the position?
If there is not a job
description outlining the
qualities and
competencies being
looked for, try to talk
with people who have
worked or are working for
the company.
Know Your CV:
Read through your job
application to remind
yourself of what you
wrote – it is all too easy
when doing multiple job
applications to get
muddled.
STUDENTS
Take a copy to the
interview. By the time
you are interviewed, your
interview panel may have
read a number of CVs.
No matter how brilliant
you think yours is, CVs
have habit of blurring.
Your task in the interview
is to highlight your CV by
breathing life into it.
Prepare your evidence:
Variety is the spice of any
interview so give them a
range of examples to
remember you by! There
is nothing worse in an
interview than a person
using the same old
example every time.
Use the simple SAR
approach to prepare your
behavioral examples:
Situation
outline the situation
briefly and concisely
Action I took
tell them what you did
(focus in an interview is
on ―I‖ not ―we‖).
Result or outcome
don‘t leave this bit outwere
you
successful/what did you
learn?

Prepare the answers to
questions:
Be mentally prepared for
a question you have not
thought of and don‘t let it
throw you. Some
interviewers very fond of
the fantastical scenario
approach and there is no
right or wrong answer
here; they are interested
in the way you approach
a problem and how you
think. Be aware of being
over-rehearsed.
Prepare question to ask
them:
• To whom will I be
accountable in this
position?
• Will the company
STUDENTS
support on-going study
and development?
• Will there be
opportunities for
increased responsibility
and broader
experiences in the
company?
• How many people work
in this
office/department?
• What is the typical
work week? Is overtime
expected?
• If I am extended a job
offer, how soon would
you like me to start?
• When can I expect to
hear from you?
• Are there any other
questions I can answer
for you?
Interview Questions
NOT to Ask:
• What does this
company do? (Do your
research ahead of
time!)
• If I get the job when
can I take time off for
vacation? (Wait until
you get the offer to
mention prior
commitments)
• Can I change my
schedule if I get the
job? (If you need to
figure out the logistics
of getting to work don't
mention it now...)
• Did I get the job? (Don't
be impatient. They'll let
you know.)

• Why the last person left
the job?
• What are the pay and
perks in the job.?
How to clam your
nerves:
Not many people find the
prospect of a job
interview exciting!
Sometimes the more you
want the job, the more
anxious, nervous, and
tense it can make you.
Work out how to clam
your nerves by looking at
ways that have worked
for you in the past and
factor this into this into
your preparation.
STUDENTS
Creative visualization:
Sports teams
successfully use a
technique of picturing
themselves winning.
Visualize yourself in the
interview handling it with
clam confidence.
Deep breathing can have
a very calming effect,
while having the side
benefit of oxygenating
your brain so you can
think better!
Reflect on a time when
you were proud of the
way you handled a
situation and remind
yourself of how you felt a
that time.
It is especially important
to have an image of
yourself as a successful
person when you are
waiting outside that
interview room! Carry the
image with you into the
room.
Consider the logistics:
The Interviewers:
• You are entitled to
know how many people
are on the interview
panel
• Their names and job
titles

When you are nervous it
can be hard remembering
names. Calling someone
the wrong name is getting
off on the wrong foot.
You can prepare for the
different questions they
will ask; the Human
Resources person will
have a different
perspective from the
technical expert.
The Process:
Do you know if there are
other tasks to be given to
you or is the interview
the sole means of
assessment?
It pays to be prepared
mentally for any
psychometric testing.
STUDENTS
At the interview they will
probably outline the next
steps so it is premature
to ask before the
interview.
Documents:
Decide what to take with
you and how you will
carry them:
• CV and Cover letter.
• Original copy of
academic transcript
• Copy of awards,
references.
• Questions you want to
ask.
The Location:
Where exactly is the
interview to be held?
Get clear instructions
and write these down.
Plan how you will get
there, and allow for
traffic delays. Have
contact phone number
for emergencies. Being
late is not a good look
and creates the lasting
kind of impression very
hard to recover.
Have a good night’s
sleep
Having done your
preparation, you can
spend the night prior to
the interview not
cramming your head with
information but treating
yourself to a decent
dinner and an early
night.

IMPORTANT Tip
If you can go to the place
the day before and have a
―dry run‖ by checking out
the building and even
seeing the dress code of
people who work there.
Introduce yourself to the
reception, tell them you
have an interview the
following day and check
out any publicity material
available you have not
already viewed. If you
intend to do this,
remember to dress
smartly as they may
invite you and show you
round!
Step 2
Presentation
People often say, ―It only
takes a few minutes to
make a lasting
impression‖ or, ―You
don‘t get a second chance
to make a first
impression‖. Within ten
seconds the person
you‘ve just met is busy
building a picture based
on the image you
projected! It is also said
ninety percent of the
interview is spent
substantiating that first
impression.

Dress:
The first impression you
make on a potential
employer is the most
important one. The first
judgment an interviewer
makes is going to be
based on how you look
and what you are
wearing. That's why it's
always important to
dress professionally for
a job interview, even if
the work environment
is casual.
What's the appropriate
dress code for an
interview? You'll want
that first impression to
be not just a good one,
but, a great one.
STUDENTS
The candidate dressed in a
suit and tie is going to make
a much better impression
than the candidate dressed
in scruffy jeans and a t-shirt.
How to Dress for an
Interview:
Men’s Interview Attire
• Suit (solid color - navy or dark
grey)
• Long sleeve shirt (white or
coordinated with the suit)
• Belt
• Tie
• Dark socks, conservative leather
shoes
• Little or no jewelry
• Neat, professional hairstyle
• Limit the aftershave
• Neatly trimmed nails
• Portfolio or briefcase
Women’s Interview Attire
• Suit (navy, black or dark grey)
• The suit skirt should be long
enough so you can sit down
comfortably
• Coordinated blouse
• Conservative shoes
• Limited jewelry (no dangling
earrings or arms full of bracelets)
• No jewelry is better than cheap
jewelry
• Professional hairstyle
• Neutral pantyhose
• Light make-up and perfume
• Neatly manicured clean nails
• Portfolio or briefcase

What Not to Bring to
the Interview
• Gum
• Cell phone
• Coffee or Tea
Interview Attire Tips
• Before you even think
about going on an
interview, make sure
you have appropriate
interview attire and
everything fits
correctly.
• Get your clothes ready
the night before, so you
don't have to spend
time getting them ready
on the day of the
interview.
STUDENTS
• If your clothes are dry
clean only, take them
to the cleaners after an
interview, so they are
ready for next time.
• Polish your shoes.
• Bring a breath mint
and use it before you
enter the building.
Step 3
Practice
Practice is important for
helping an interviewee
see themselves and hear
themselves as other do.
One of the greatest assets
for a job seeker is a
―truth teller‖,
a person who will give
honest feedback when
you practice in front of
them.
Ask them to not tone of
voice, hand gestures, eye
contact, sitting position
and other body language.
Practice your interviewing
technique so you look
like you belong. Your
practice will benefit your
performance greatly. Here
are some tips to help you
prepare your
presentation
professionally.

• Practicing for an
interview is much like
readying yourself for a
public speech. Your job
is to sell yourself as the
only one for the job. Be
able to enumerate the
specific reasons why.
• Do not mention skills
you do not possess.
Your potential employer
may test you.
• If you don't understand
a question, ask for
clarification--you must
do this anyway to
survive on a job.
Always follow-up with a
thank you letter
reiterating your interest
in the position. If you
interview with multiple
people send each one a
thank you note.
Writing a thank you
letter, or thank you
email, after an
employment interview is
a must. In fact, some
employers think less of
those interviewees who
fail to follow-up promptly.
Plan to send out your
thank you letters or
thank you letter as soon
as possible (preferably
within twenty-four hours)
after your interview.

Customize Your Thank
You Letters
Like any piece of writing,
it is best to keep your
audience in mind.
Address their issues and
concerns. In general,
typed (paper or email)
thank you letters are
recommended.
View Your Thank You
Letters as Sales Letters
You may also view your
thank you letters as
follow-up "sales" letters.
In other words, you can
restate why you want the
job, what your
qualifications are, how
you might make
significant contributions,
and so on.
STUDENTS
This thank you letter is
also the perfect
opportunity to discuss
anything of importance
that your interviewer
neglected to ask or that
you neglected to answer
as thoroughly, or as well,
as you would have liked.
Group Thank You
Letters
What if you spent an
entire day being
interviewed (and taken to
lunch) with several
people? Are individual
thank you letter
appropriate or should
you write a "group"
letter?
Choose your approach
based on what you think
will be most in keeping
with the "personality" of
the organization. Also,
consider whether the
interviews had very much
in common with one
another. If there was a
great deal of similarity
(i.e., shared concerns
mutually voiced by your
interviewers), perhaps a
"group" letter will suffice.
My preference though,
would be to take the
extra time and send an
individual thank you
letter to everyone you met
with.

Follow Up Letter Guide
A Follow Up Letter
should convey these
points:
1. I am still interested
in the company's
current concerns and
opportunities.
2. I have something
specific to contribute
that would benefit
the company.
3. I would like to hear
Some Do’s & Don’ts:
• Plan to arrive on time
or a few minutes early.
Late arrival for a job
interview is not
excusable.
• If presented with an
application, do fill it
out neatly and
completely. Don‘t rely
on your application or
resume to do the
selling for you.
Interviewers will want
you to speak for
yourself.
• Greet the interviewer
by last name if you are
sure of the
pronunciation.
If not,
ask the employer to
repeat it.
•Give the appearance of
energy as you walk.
Smile! Shake hands
firmly. Be genuinely
glad to meet the
interviewer.
• Wait until you are
offered a chair before
sitting. Sit upright, look
alert and interested at
all times. Be a good
listener as will as a
good communicator.
• Look a prospective
employer in the eye
while speaking.

• Follow the interviewer‘s
leads, but try to get the
interviewer to describe
the position and the
duties to you early in
the interview so that
you can apply your
background, skills and
accomplishments to the
position.
• Make sure that your
good points come
across to the
interviewer in a factual,
sincere manner. Stress
achievements.
• Always conduct
yourself as if you are
determined to get the
job you are discussing.
Never close the door on
opportunity.
STUDENTS
• Show enthusiasm. If
you are interested in
the opportunity,
enthusiastic feedback
can enhance your
chances of being
further considered. If
you are not interested,
your responsiveness
will still demonstrate
your professionalism.
• Don‘t forget to bring a
copy of your CV
(Resume) keep several
copies on hand
• Don‘t smoke . Even if
the interviewer does
and offers you a
cigarette . Do not chew
gum
• Don‘t answer with a
simple ―yes‖ or ―no‖
Explain whenever
possible. Describe
those things about
yourself which relate to
the situation
• Don‘t lie. Answer
questions truthfully,
frankly and succinctly
• Don‘t make
unnecessary derogatory
remarks about your
present or former
employers. Obviously,
there were issues or
else you would not
have left a prior
company or be looking
to leave a present
employer.

However when
explaining your reasons
to adequately
communicate your
rational.
• Don‘t over answer
questions and if the
interview steers the
conversation into
politics or controversial
issues, try to do more
listening than speaking
since this could be
sensitive situation.
• Don‘t inquire about the
salary , vacations,
bonuses, retirement,
etc. on the initial
interview unless you
are sure the employer
is interested in hiring
you.
STUDENTS
If the interviewer asks
what salary you want,
indicate what you‘ve
earned but you‘re more
interested in
opportunity than
specific salary
STEP 3
Employability Skills
Introduction
The tow greatest concerns
of employers today are
finding good workers and
training them.
The difference between
the skills needed on the
job and those possesses
by applicants, sometimes
called the skills-gap, is of
real concern of human
resources managers and
business owners looking
to hire competent
employees.
While employers would
prefer to hire people who
are trained and ready to
go to work, they are
usually willing to provide
the specialized , jobspecific
training
necessary for those
lacking such skills.

Finding workers who
have employability or job
readiness skills that help
them fit into and remain
in the work environment
is a real problem.
Employers need reliable,
responsible workers who
can solve problems and
who have social skills
and attitudes to work
together with other
workers.
Employees with these
skills are in demand and
are considered valuable
human capital assets to
companies.
STUDENTS
Definition
The Australian Council of
Educational research (ACER)
identified a range of
descriptors for the
characteristics learners are
expected to acquire.
These are included in the
table below :
Descriptor
Skills
Competencies
Attributes,
competencies,
and
characteristics
Definition
Commonly understood to
refer to an ability to
perform a specific task
Used to refer to an
observable behavior
performed to a specifies
level and therefore
provides a basis for the
assessment of
performance
Refer to those capabilities
of an individual in most
instances although "
characteristics" is
sometimes used to
describe a workplace/job
specific requirement.
Employability skills are
those basic, generic
skills, attitudes and
behaviors necessary for
getting, keeping, and
doing well on a job .
They are required not
only to gain employment ,
but also to progress
within an enterprise so
as to achieve ones
potential and contribute
successfully to enterprise
strategic direction.

Employers look for
Employability Skills in
new recruits and they
develop them through
training programs in
current employees to
integrate and use them in
varying combinations
depending on the nature
of the job activities, and
to get along with their
fellow workers and
supervisors and to make
critical decisions.
STUDENTS
Unlike occupational or
technical skills,
employability skills are
generic in nature rather
than job specific and cut
across all industry types,
business seizes , and job
levels from the entry level
worker to the senior-most
position.
Employability = Employ + ability
Employability Skills are
developed in school and
through a variety of life
experiences outside
school. The student, the
family and the
educational system,
supported and enhanced
by the rest of the society,
Literally that is the ability to be employed - potentially in lots of deferent jobs and workplaces.
Employability skills = the basic skills needed to function effectively at work , no matter what kind of
work you're doing.

Why ?
Economic glob has been
through a decades of
changes and economic
growth and a strong
focus on productivity
improvement. Enterprises
, in recognition of the
economic challenges and
globalization, have
implemented a range of
strategies to support
growth and increase their
international
competitiveness. Such
strategies include
multitasking , greater
automation , workforce
restructuring .
STUDENTS
All of this led to changes
in jobs by making more
people working part-time
jobs part of the year,
workers making living
through combination of
different types of work,
keeping customers happy
is becoming more
important, fewer
opportunities for lower
educational skills, and
greater emphasis on
trades and technology.
With companies continue
to downsize, technology
development and more
people doing business
globally, focus on
adaptation, cost
reduction, increased
productivity, new
markets / products /
services , only workers
who have more different
responsibilities will
remain, recruitment and
training choices are being
largely driven by these
business strategies. In
this environment
employees will need to be
supporting increased
competitiveness,
flexibility, innovation,
client focus and to use
their skills in new ways.

Categories
Employability skills ,
while categorized in may
different ways are
generally divided into
three sets:
1. Basic Academic
Skills: Essential for
high performance,
skills
Meaningful reflection
takes practice. As you are
continually learning and
experiencing new things
in life, it is therefore
important to continually
reflect on your skills and
attributes that are likely
to change over time. On a
regular basis, try to make
some time to think about
your progress. At first,
you may need to guide
your reflection with
questions such as these:
• What did I learn today?
• What did I do well?
• What am I confused
about?
• What do I need help
with?
• What do I want to know
more about?
• What am I going to
work on improving
next?

Remember that in order
to succeed you need to be
proactive - you are in
charge of your own
career. It is important
that you use your time at
UNSW to enhance your
awareness of the
changing world of work
and yourself, to generate
your own career options
and to manage your own
personal development
throughout all stages of
life. This will help you to
become a Self Reliant
Graduate. So try to take
advantage of as many
opportunities as possible
in order to improve your
skills and abilities as a
starting point.
STUDENTS
Perhaps you need to
upgrade your skills to
advance at work or get
another job. Maybe you
just want to learn a new
skill for your own
purposes. Whatever your
learning need, you have a
wide variety of options to
achieve your goals.
• Find the Right
Program:
Perhaps you need to
finish high school or
upgrade a particular
skill. Maybe you want to
go to college or
university. Whatever your
situation, there are a
wide variety of programs
• Self-Study:
You are already use this
method informally to
learn how to do everyday
tasks. But self-study is
also a way you can learn
more systematically.
• On the Job Learning:
Training at work can be
as informal as finding
someone to help you
learn a skill to being in
an apprenticeship
program. Learn about
different kinds of on-thejob
learning methods
such as:
• Specialized training
• Coaching/mentoring
• Job shadowing
• Internships

• Volunteerism
• Apprenticeship
• Professional
development
• In the Classroom :
Are you considering
taking a classroom
course? Many adults find
that going back to school
is a positive and
enriching experience.
Why? Because they are:
• Highly motivated.
• Eager to learn quickly
because their time is
valuable.
• Bring useful
background knowledge
to classroom
discussions.
STUDENTS
The result is that most
adults find that any
problems they had at
school when they were
young no longer exist. In
fact, many instructors
say that their adult
students are challenging,
stimulating and
rewarding to teach
because of their
curiosity/life experiences.
• Online Learning :
Some people live too far
from a school; others
have schedules that don't
allow for a regular
classroom program. If
you fit this "picture,"
then learning online
could be a good learning
option.
Jotting down the answers
to the following questions
will help you create an
Action Learning Plan
for getting the learning
experience you want
• What do I want to
learn?
• Why do I want to learn
this?
• What are the possible
ways of learning?
• What method will work
best given the way I like
to learn and how I
intend to use it?
• What resources and
supports are available
to help me?

• How will I know I've
learned?
• What are the things I
need to do and when do
I need to do them?
Employability Skills
Assessment
The best way to assess
your skills and abilities is
to consider the situations
in which you have
demonstrated or applied
them. Some of the areas
of life experience that you
may want to consider
include:
STUDENTS
1. Academic experience
and results
2. Work experience –
paid and unpaid
3. Extra curricular
involvement
These three areas are
ones most typically
examined by employers
when they recruit
graduates. This is
because they usually
provide an employer with
the best evidence of the
skills they value and all
employers are looking for
the Balanced Graduate.
Other ways in which you
can further understand
and evaluate your skills
and abilities is by
discussing them with
friends, colleagues and
family members.

STEP 4
Networking and self
promotion
What is networking?
Networking is the process
of making contacts and
exchanging information
with other people. It
involves building
relationships and
creating a personal set of
contacts that may be able
to help you in some way
and you may be able to
help in some way.
STUDENTS
Networking is attentively
and consciously meeting
people, being interested
in them, remembering
who they are and what
they do, and exchanging
information with them
over time.
Organizations themselves
engage in networking
when they need new
employees. As a job
seeker, your aim should
be to make sure that
their networks intersect
the network you created.
Your Network
Organization
Network
Many good positions are
never posted, because a
qualified candidate
learned of the position by
talking to the right people
at the right time, and the
position was filled
without any formal
advertisement.
Employers often hire
through contacts because
they prefer to hire
someone they know. If
they receive a
recommendation of a
good candidate, they can
feel confident in their
new employee while
saving time and money
as compare to the
traditional job posting
methods.

Hiring through contacts
bypasses the need to
advertise a position, read
countless CV‘s, and
interview many
candidates. With this in
mind, you can see how it
is beneficial for
employers and job
candidates to network.
Why to network?
1. The single best
source for new
positions is ―Word-ofmouth‖.
2. Gives you an earlier
chance at an
opportunity, at a time
when you can still
help shape the job
STUDENTS
description and
influence the level
and pay range of the
position.
3. Face less competition
because no more
than of other people
will typically be
brought in through
an organization‘s own
networking activities.
4. Get you access to
people who might not
be responsive to
direct approach
letter, and provides
you with the added
advantage of a
recommendation
from someone the
hiring manager
knows
5. conduct field
research, learn about
specific field that you
are interested in.
6. explore careers, learn
about what type of
work exist in different
fields.
7. obtain information
about organizations
8. obtain career advice
9. seek job – search
advice
10. create your own job
or internship
11. ―sanity – check‖ your
approach. Testing
your ability for hiring
in a certain field.

Who to network with?
No limits for networking,
network with every one.
That means: relatives,
family, friends,
colleagues, professors,
guest speakers in you
class, organizations,
doctors, people line in the
coffee shop, any one that
works in the community,
etc………
Network etiquette ( How
to network) ?
• Be well prepared, be
able to articulate as
much as you know about
what you are looking for
in your career
STUDENTS
• Always be professional,
courteous, and
considerate.
• Be interested in the
people you meet. Most
people enjoy the chance
to tell you about their
own careers and
activities.
• Be a genuine (real).
Possess a sincere desire
to learn. Be honest in
asking for advice. If you
are only interested in
asking for a job, it will
show, no matter how you
disguise it.
• Be gracious (polite) .
Write a thank you letter
when people take time to
meet with you. Stay in
touch. Update people in
your network when you
make significant progress
in your research or job
search.
• Give back. Know
enough about the people
you meet to keep their
needs in mind as you
continue to network. You
may be able to pass in
ideas, articles, and
contacts that will interest
them.

• Use good judgment
about the amount of time
you request when you
contact people. Do not
overstay your welcome
and don‘t ―return to the
well‖ too many times
• Shelve your shyness:
you can learn to get over
your shyness. Recognize
that other people also
feels the same way,
practice your body
language. Find a role
model and make
something that person
does, like a confident
handshake, part of your
technique.
STUDENTS
• Join groups
comfortably: at any
gathering people will be
talking in groups, to join
a group use your body
language, touch
someone‘s arm gently
and firmly to be
considered then naturally
the circle will be broken
for you to enter, keep eye
contact with the person
you are talking to and
smile while you listen.
Take a moment to tune
into the conversation and
participate when you‘re
ready. Introduce you self
when there‘s a quiet
period in the
conversation.
• Engage your partner:
you can use body
language to reward and
encourage your partner.
Establish eye contact,
nod your head for non
verbal encouragement, be
nice – show your partner
you are enjoying the
conversation. Smile and
use signals. Aim your
attention at your partner
and ease your attitude.

• Be seriously curious:
networking is not just
about talking, it‘s also
about listening. Don‘t
monopolize the
conversation; encourage
dialogue. Everyone has a
story, use interview
techniques to avoid did
end questions. Ask
people where they came
from and how they got
where they are. Make
other people talk.
STUDENTS
• Be careful of turnoffs:
just as easily you
can enter a group, you
can also have people
scrambling to make a run
for it. Don‘t do
monologues or tell the
details, they are boring
and lose people attention.
At the same time don‘t
interrupt others.
Persistence is a good
value but know when to
stop probing. Be careful
of flirting, becoming
intoxicated or using
offensive language. This
type of behavior can
make you an unattractive
conversation partner at
this and future events.
Establishing a new
Contact ( asking for
informational interview)
Networking letter is
designed to generate
informational interview
not job interviews. Which
allow you to meet
individuals who can give
you specific information
about your intended
career. Your purpose in
seeking informational
interviews may vary, but
your reasons for wanting
to meet with a contact
person must be genuine
and sincere.

it remains a viable way to
conduct job market
research, refine career
goals, and uncover
vacancies information in
an industry or a
geographical region.
Informational
interviewing isn‘t a magic
shortcut to employment;
it requires solid
preparation, sincerity,
and much effort.
The networking letter is
the first step in the
informational interview
process. Normally, a
resume is not attached to
a networking letter, but it
may be presented during
the interview itself to help
STUDENTS
the interviewer address
your questions. Your aim
is to set up an
introductory
(informational) interview
by sending a small
number of letters and
short CV‘s ( no more than
10 and not all at the
same time) to people that
could be interested in
your skills and
experience. Standard
letters is not a good idea.
It is important that the
recipient feels special,
otherwise they will put
your letter in the bin. Use
the new technology to
deliver your networking
letter through emails or
telephone calls.
Informational
Interviews
one of the easiest way to
build a professional
network is through
informational interviews.
Informational
interviewing offers a
resource for finding jobs,
which are not publicly
advertised. By contacting
people already in your
chosen specialization,
you have access to
―inside information‖
about careers paths, the
skills necessary to
succeed, and people to
contact who may have
positions available.

What’s Informational
Interview?
Informational
Interviewing (career
conversations) is the
process of having
conversations with
individuals ( generally
referred to them as career
advisors ) about their
work as a method of
career exploration and
network building.
Informational
interviewing is NOT job
seeking or job
interviewing. These
career conversations
provide an opportunity
to:
STUDENTS
• Gather career – related
information and advice
about an organization,
job, and related
professional concerns
that are not available
from written sources.
• Create contacts and
build relationships with
people in your career
field.
By speaking with
professionals in a career,
you will be better
informed and have the
chance to learn the
vocabulary of the field –
knowledge that will help
you to present yourself
more effectively in job
interviews.
( A primary complaint of
employment interviews is
that job candidates are
not well informed about
their field of interest )
Optimal outcomes
might include one or
more of the following :
• You learn enough
about the field to know
that is or is not for you.
• You get new ideas for
possible careers and/or
jobs in this or related
field, or even in different
field.

• If you visit your
contact‘s workplace, you
gain a firsthand
impression of a specific
work environment.
• If you are already
decided on a career field,
you get practical ideas
and insider advice about
how to enter that field, i.e
.. job hunting strategies,
way to research job
openings, informed
guesswork about where
the best jobs might be.
• You get the names of
other people in your field
of interest who can give
you more information.
STUDENTS
• You develop and
maintain friendly
relationships with your
contacts over time and
they may alert you to
future job opportunities.
Who are Career
Advisors?
People agree to be
interviewed for a variety
of reasons:
They enjoy getting to
know other people who
share their interest.
As a courtesy to a mutual
contact or affiliation.
They enjoy sharing what
they find rewarding,
satisfying, and
frustrating about their
work, to pass along more
specific information
about their profession
and employer.
How do you prepare for
a career conversation?
Do your research first.
Find out as much as
possible about the
individuals you plan to
contact and their
organizations and career
fields. Read career
literature, trade
publications, and
company information,
and conduct research
using the internet. See
the career field section
for specific resources.

• Think carefully about
what you hope to learn
and the kinds of
questions that will elicit
that information. Most
people prefer to answer
questions that require
them to reflect on their
work. Open ended,
evaluative questions are
often an effective way to
start the conversation.
The order and phrasing
of your questions will
depend on your own style
and the flow of the
conversation.
STUDENTS
• Write down a list of
possible questions or
topics before you begin to
conduct advisor.
• Start with your least
intimidating contacts
first.
Some questions to ask
in an informational
interview include:
• How do most people get
into this filed ?
• What skills / personal
qualities, training,
experience, education do
you think are necessary
to be successful in your
field?
• What the job is like?
The challenges, rewards,
encounters, decisions,
frustrations, problems,
time consumed.
• What are the life style
implication of the work?
Salary, benefits, family,
policy, travel, pressure,
flexibility, security.
• What is the normal
work environment?
Physical setting, people,
organizational structure,
culture.
• What are the current
issues of the industry?
• What is a typical day
like?
• What would you do
differently in your career
path to get to where you
are?

• Could you please look
at my CV and give me
feedback about what I
can do to make myself a
better candidate upon
graduate?
• Are there other related
fields that I should be
considering given my
interests?
• Is there someone else
that I should contact for
advice? May I use your
name?
The last question may be
the most important. For
every informational
interview you should
walk away with at least
one more person to
contact.
STUDENTS
In this way, you continue
to expand your
professional network.
few interview guidelines:
Do…
• When requesting the
interview, be clear and
direct about the goal of
your interview
(informational not job)
and the time commitment
( 30- 40 minutes). Cite
your referrals and sources
and be prepared for phone
interview.
• Act professionally as
you would for any
interview, dress properly,
confirm before one day,
arrive little early…
• Listen attentively and
ask your questions with
the flow of the
conversation without
loosing the track of the
time.
• Clarify any special
point you missed or
didn‘t understand , write
any referrals or
suggestions and then put
your comments of what
you learned after the
interview immediately.
• Stay with your time
limit and be sensitive to
any clue from the advisor
that the time limit is
over.
• Write a thank you
letter for the time the
advisor consumed in
interviewing you.

Don’t…
• Ask them for a job even
indirectly.
• Forget to send a thank
you note even for a phone
appointment.
• Speak with only one or
two people and assume
their view is a field
representative.
Matters of judgment
Whether to write or
call first.
• Call first: if they have
indicated that they would
like to be contacted by
phone or to confirm
information you need to
write to them ( such as
address, title, correct
spelling of name)
STUDENTS
• Write first: if you think
that the contact would
appreciate having a brief
introduction by mail and
sense of what you are
exploring or if you are not
confident introducing
yourself on the phone.
Remember even when
writing follow up with a
call. Experiment to see
what works best for you.
How and when to
present a resume.
You should always bring
copies of your resume to
an appointment with an
advisor.
Make sure that it is an
efficient way to give your
contact a sense of your
background or as
something that you seek
advice on , rather than as
a ploy to get a job. It is
best to present your
resume near the end of
the meeting.
To pay or not to pay
For the lunch, drink, etc..
a good rule of thumb is
―he who invites, offer to
pay‖ so be prepared to
offer a pay, or – as more
likely- to pay for your
own meal or to graciously
accept their offer to pay.

Self presentation and
your expectations
Be yourself but also be
sensitive to the
impression you make.
Make sure that your
expectations are realistic;
know what you hope to
learn about their career
fields, and don‘t expect
them to offer you a job or
to provide you with
general career
counseling.
Going back to ask for
job hunting help.
It is reasonable to recontact
the person when
you have narrowed your
focus and begun a job
search.
STUDENTS
Write or call the advisor
and remind her or him of
your previous contact,
explain your current
situation and goals. Ask
if he or she would mind
passing along your
resume or letting you
know of job leads.
Treat an informational
interview as a
professional meeting. Be
prepared with questions,
dress professionally , and
arrive on time. Ask for a
business card. It is
important to get names,
spellings and titles
correct.
Any informational
interview could lead to a
job, so always be
prepared. It requires
time, energy, a positive
and appreciative attitude.
The investment repays
itself many times over by
generating invaluable
information, skills, and
contacts in a process you
can use throughout your
life. In the future be
willing to be advisor for
others who may be
conducting informational
interviews.

Organize your contacts
into an easily updatable
system
e.g. computer database,
notebook, personal
organizer, index cards,
etc. you might find it
useful to include the
following information:
• Name
• Job / Role
• Work details –
company, address,
phone, mobile , fax,
email, website
• Notes on the company
– recent and future jobs,
press coverage, etc
• How / when you met
• Mutual friends /
acquaintances
STUDENTS
• Ideas and possible
kinds of co-operation.
Be proactive in
developing and
maintaining contacts
• Gather potentially
useful business
cards/numbers from
courses, conferences,
meetings, etc.
• Join a professional
group representing your
area of interest.
• If you attend a course,
ask fellow participants
and tutors about their
work and contacts.
• Think about your social
contacts – they may have
friends or colleagues in
the industry.
The idea is to build up a
network of contacts that
you can call on for help,
advice, or jobs. You have
to know why you are
networking, so work out
who and what you need
to know.
Networking is a two-way
street, so be prepared to
share ideas and
information. Make an
effort to go to meetings
and events where you
think the people you
need to know might be.
You might not see an
immediate benefit, but
over time you‘ll increase
your knowledge of your
own profession and make
useful contacts.

Don‘t underestimate the
value of casual
conversations. And
remember to follow up
and keep in touch.
Self promotion
Networking is a critical
component to any
successful job search. By
now you know that
you‘ve got to get out and
meet new people to find
the best leads. But
there‘s something else
that goes hand in hand
with networking: Self –
promotion is a crucial
element to your success
in finding a job, moving
up to a better one and
negotiating a raise.
STUDENTS
Beat the fear of self
promotion
Many negative
connotations typically
come to mind when
thinking about self
promotion. All of which
unfortunately keep most
people from feeling
comfortable and
confident when talking
about themselves. you
know all of the immature
favorites: conceited,
show-off, braggart,
arrogant, egotistical.
Nobody wants to fall
victim to such namecalling.
Yet , if you are not
comfortable claiming
your achievements and
promoting yourself, it will
be difficult if not
impossible to get a head
in your career. That‘s
right, you‘ve got to toot
your own horn! And toot
it proudly.

How to overcome self
promotion difficulties?
We often talk about our
responsibilities rather
that our achievements.
We‘ll rehash our previous
job description instead of
boasting about our
accomplishments. We do
this in our resumes,
cover letters,
conversations and
interviews, which often
hold us back from getting
the job, raise or
promotion we deserve.
Ask for advice and
practice turning every
responsibility into an
accomplishment.
STUDENTS
Make a point of going
through your resume to
make sure every sentence
and every bullet reflects
an accomplishment that
can be quantified or
qualified. This is not
always possible, but in
most cases you‘ll find
statements that can be
tweaked for a powerful
improvement.
Throughout your career ,
maintain a file or a
notebook to track all of
your achievements – big
and small. Whether it is a
―job well done‖ email
from a colleague, a thank
you note from a client or
any other type of praise.
At any given time you
should be able to identify
three to five of your
biggest and proudest
professional
accomplishments.
Knowing what your
achievements are will
enable you to seize
opportunities to set
yourself apart from the
competition. Remember
that job searching is all
about sales: the product
you are selling is you! If
you‘re unable to convey
the :product‖ benefit, it‘s
more challenging to
convince a potential
buyer to go for it!

once you know what
you‘re selling and why it
is such a special product,
when you‘re networking
and interviewing
situations you‘ll want to
be able to smartly and
succinctly convey your
greatest strength. Many
otherwise smart people
blow great opportunities
because they are
unprepared when
meeting someone new.
one way to never be
caught off guard is to
always practice it, the
more confident you‘ll feel
about delivering.
STUDENTS
Be specific (focused)
Beyond that, when
promoting yourself to
new contacts and asking
them for help in your job
search, you‘ll want to be
as specific as possible
with your request. For
example ; when a
manager gets calls or
emails from people
seeking very generic help,
it‘s too time consuming
for him to respond. The
person who says: ‖ I have
a wide variety of interests
and I‘m open to anything‖
is forcing the manager to
think too much for her,
which means he is not
likely to respond.
On the other hand, the
same manager much
more likely to respond to
the person who says: ―
I‘m looking to get into
pharmaceutical sales‖ or
the applicants who write:
‖ I want a job in
corporate public
relations‖ in those cases
he is apt to offer
suggested contacts and
resources because they
are making it easy for
him to offer a few
minutes of advice.
It‘s completely acceptable
- in fact in some cases
encouraged- to have more
than one pitch if you are
exploring careers in
different fields.

You can position and
pitch yourself as an
expert in three different
fields, as long as you‘re
able to describe your
strengths, success and
passion about each of
these areas. You don‘t
have to categorize
yourself to one thing, but
it‘s essential to make
sure you are targeting
each of these efforts.
STUDENTS
One of the biggest
complaints recruiters
have about job seekers is
a lack of focus. This is
especially true in an
economic climate that
has seen longer periods
of unemployment that
any of us would want. As
the bill piles up and the
frustration grows,
jobseekers find
themselves more
desperate. That leads to
the ― I‘ll take anything –
just give me a job‖
approach, which is a
huge turn off to potential
employers.
Be positive and
proactive
When there are many
highly qualified
candidates vying for the
same position, it often
comes down to the
attitude. The candidate
which the best outlook,
the most positive
personality and the more
passion for the position
usually gets the job. Your
self-promotion should
never include any
negatives. Keep all
professional
conversations positive
and proactive. Leave the
baggage behind.

Be proud
The last and perhaps the
most important issue to
realize is that you‘ve
earned the right to
celebrate your
accomplishments. Many
times when something
great happens to us we
can‘t believe it and we
wind up questioning
ourselves as to whether
or not we deserve it. This
is specially true for men
and women. We worry
that someone will wonder
― who does s/he think
s/he is?‖ .
STUDENTS
Fortunately the most
successful person have
gotten over that fear.
They‘re not afraid to tell
everyone who‘ll listen
how great they are, and
frankly we should
applaud them. If you
don‘t toot your horn
nobody else will do it for
you – except you mother,
but she can‘t call every
employer on your behalf.
Be proud – very proud- of
yourself and your
accomplishments. You
have earned it.
Other forms of personal
marketing
• Advertising : in the
trade press / trade
journals – not usually
very productive for
individuals.
• Direct mail shots :
again may not be
productive for
individuals.
• Printed brochures:
expensive, and can be
less effective that letters.
•Show reels : keep them
short ( 3 minutes)

• Headed paper, cards,
compliment slips,
invoices: essential to
convey a professional
image. Make them stand
out and think about color
and design.
• Self presentation:
people make swift
judgment at meetings.
Remember to dress
appropriately to show
that you take it seriously.
• Occasion cards: very
useful for keeping in
touch.
Work Ethics
What is Work Ethic?
The work ethic is a
cultural norm that
advocates being
personally accountable
and responsible for the
work that one does and is
based on a belief that
work has intrinsic value.
Research has shown that
many characteristics of
work ethic can be
summarized using three
terms
1- Interpersonal skills,
2- Initiative, and
3- Being dependable.

1- Interpersonal Skills:
Include the habits,
attitudes, manners,
appearance, and
behaviors we use around
other people, which affect
how we get along with
other people.
The development of
interpersonal skills
begins early in life and is
influenced by:
STUDENTS
• Family or parents
• Friends
• Our observations of the
world around us.
• Televisions & movies
How to improve our
interpersonal skills?
We must first be aware of
what we are like from the
perspective of other
people who interact with
us. Habits we are
unaware of, actions we
think go unnoticed, and
other things about us
that might affect other
people are impossible for
us to change if we are not
aware of them.
One of the things that
teachers try to do,
starting in the early
grades, is to help
students correct bad
habits and to develop
good interpersonal skills.
As we become adults, it
increasingly becomes our
own responsibility to
initiate any changes in
interpersonal skills that
might be needed.

‣ Loyalty
Loyalty to company
means going to your
supervisor with any
problem or complaint
that may arise. Part of a
supervisor‘s job is to
handle employee
problems. Employers
prefer to solve their own
internal problems. They
do not want dissatisfied
employees complaining
about their work.
Another aspect of loyalty
concerns keeping
company ―secrets" or
(strategies) within the
company .
STUDENTS
Always keep in mind that
if the company can
succeed ,you will be more
likely to succeed also.
You should be proud of
the work your company
does and the work you do
for the company .If
conditions are such that
you cannot feel
faithfulness and
allegiance to your
company ,you should
seek a job elsewhere
‣ Trustworthiness
Many cases exist when
an employer or
supervisor needs to be
able to place an employee
in a position of trust.
When the employer trusts
an employee, It often means
that the employer can ask
the employee to do
something beyond the call
of duty and expect the
employee to accomplish it.
The special task could be
closing up a business at the
end of the day .An employer
would want someone who
handles the company‘s cash
or keeps a tool room or
supply room to be
trustworthy. Each of these
situations requires that the
employer trust the employee
to carry out the task. When
the employee completes the
task ,he or she earns the
employer‘s trust.

‣ Self-Discipline and
Self –Responsibility
Being self-disciplined is a
part of accepting
responsibility for your
own actions. We are the
only ones from whom we
can steal time, talent,
and accomplishment.
Self-Discipline requires
that you structure your
time so that you can
cultivate and use your
talents and abilities for
the betterment of your
company and you.
Self-discipline also
requires that you learn to
handle your emotions.
You are in control of your
feelings ;they are not in
control of you.
STUDENTS
2- Being dependable:
Is one of the most highly
sought after traits for
workers in the modern
workplace. This work
ethic construct includes
honesty, reliability ,and
being on time. A
responsible ,dependable
employee is one who
agrees to carry out a task
under agreed –upon
procedure.
Employees are often put
in positions in which they
are responsible for
money, for other people‘s
safety, for other people‘s
production ,for
merchandise for money
,for customer‘s goodwill…
Employers are quick to
see which employees can
handle positions and
situations of
responsibility and which
employees cannot.
When you are careful to
make sure that any job
you are given is done well
and completed on time,
you will build up your
reputation for being
dependable and reliable.
Such work ethics are
valuable to any employer.

3- Initiative:
Direct supervision is
often not a feature of the
modern workplace.
Without initiative
,procrastination and
missed opportunities can
become a real problem.
Sometimes poor
performance results and
leads to loss of a job,
without any second
chances.
Initiative has two
components drive and
effort. Quite often we
hear commentary about
how naturally gifted
someone is in sports, the
arts,…..etc.
STUDENTS
Yet ,no matter how gifted
someone is ,unless they
work harder, longer ,and
smarter than their
colleagues, they will not
be the best.
Being successful in the
activities you participate
in dependent on your
skills and your attitudes.
However, the amount of
drive and effort you put
in an activity could make
the difference between
average performance and
high performance.
When employees have
initiative, they are:
• Willing to take the first
step in seeing that
work gets done.
• They are hard workers.
• They do what they are
paid to do, and then
more.
• They see a job or a task
that needs to be done,
and they do it without
being asked.
• Show willingness of
pitch in and help other
employee in (employee
illness ,overload..).
An overall attitude of
helpfulness makes the
organization run more
smoothly and improves
everyone‘s work
situations.

4- Other Work Ethics :
Specific employability
skills and personal
characteristics are drawn
from all three work ethic
components.
‣ Employability skills :
Good communication
skills
Positive attitude
Ability to be dependable,
punctual, and
responsible.
‣ Personal
characteristics:
Dressing properly
Being polite
Displaying selfconfidence
STUDENTS
The Top behaviors that
Cause On-The –Job
Difficulties:
1. Dishonesty and lying.
2. Irresponsibility,
goofing off, and
attending to personal
business on company
time.
3. Arrogance and ego
problem.
4. Absenteeism and
lateness .
5. Not following
instructions or
ignoring company
policies.
6. Complaining about
the company policies.
7. Laziness and lack of
motivation .
8. Lack of character,
inability to get along
well with others
9. Disrespect ,displays
of anger or pettiness.
10. Making ill –informed
decisions and take
credit for work done
by others.
Arguments for Good
Work Ethics:
Why should I put in a
hard days work ,day in
and day out, when fellow
co-workers receive the
same pay for doing less
labor? What is the bonus
for working as hard as
possible and striving to
be a model employee?

These are a couple of the
questions that today's
workers ponder. For one
Michigan State University
student, Jeff Smith ,hard
work always pays off.
Smith worked as a
salesman at JCPenney all
throughout high school.
He states, I‘m sure it
seems like striving to put
in a honest work day
doesn‘t have its obvious
benefits, but mangers
recognize your efforts and
that makes it a more lopsided
matter when it
comes to situations such
as lay-offs, raises, or
vacations time.
STUDENTS
Arguments For Having
Bad Work Ethics
Why should I work when
I‘m going to receive the
same amount of pay? For
one anonymous Michigan
State University student,
hard work doesn‘t always
pay.
He worked at a local
Dairy Queen over the
summer .He hated his job
and the amount of money
he received while there.
However ,he had a
scheme to get some
additional money every
week. He would simply
steal money from the
register to get ahead.
He states, I remember
when people would buy
their ice-cream, I would
fake like I was ringing it
through the register and
then put the money they
gave me for their icecream
right into my
pocket easily made an
extra couple hundred
dollars a week.
Self-evaluation:
• Do you have a
positive attitude about
your job and the
company you work for
on a daily basis?
It is really hard for an
employer to believe you
exude strong work ethics,

if you do not project how
much you love your job
and the company. If you
are grumbling,
complaining or part of
the "whiner's club" at
work, you will never
convince your boss that
you have good work
ethics, or that you should
be promoted.
• Do you have a highlevel
of energy at
work?
To be appointed to
manage a large project,
you need to make the
boss believe you can
handle it easily.
STUDENTS
This is where a healthy
lifestyle is critical, with
proper rest, nutrition and
exercise all-important to
your success. Burning
the candles at both ends
will burn you out.
• Do you do your job
right the first time?
This question really
comes back to attitude
about your job. If you do
your job in a haphazard
fashion, you really
display a poor attitude
about work. In addition,
this situation causes a
real productivity problem
for your company.
If you do it wrong the
first time, you will be
doing it over and over
until you get it right.
• Are you willing to
work overtime when
the company needs
you?
The employer today
needs employees who will
be there for them when it
counts. In information
technology, you will most
likely work overtime if
you are part of a start-up
company or if you are
working on a project
implementation.

In many cases, many
high-paying positions do
require overtime.
This is not an unusual
way of life in IT, as well
as in many white-collar
positions today. If your
company needs you and
you are not willing to put
the time in, you should
not wonder why you are
always passed over at
promotions.
• Do you realize how
visible "work ethics"
are in a small
company, or in a team?
Paula Ballog, CFO at
Bender Consulting
Services, Inc. said, "Good
work ethics are critical in
hiring any employee for
any small company in the
United States today.‖
It is amazing how quickly
people forget how visible
they are in a small
company, where every
employee must handle
multiple tasks.
Even in a large
corporation, in a team
environment, the team
player that does not put
in their share is quickly
labeled as "lazy".
Pittsburgh is a town that
lives on reputations, and
you do not ever want that
label.
Remember there are
millions of people who
would give anything to
have what you possess
today - employment.
Good work ethics means
pride in your work.
Employment is a treasure
you never want to lose.
