Non-road fuel consumption and pollutant emissions FOEN 2008 94 8.7 Railway machinery 8.7.1 Fuel consumption Only diesel-powered machinery is used on the country’s railways, mainly in the form of shunting locomotives. In 2005, the overall consumption of diesel amounted to 11,300 tonnes (Fig. 48, top). According to Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) statistics, 10.1 million litres (or 8380 tonnes) of diesel were consumed in 2005 for traction purposes (SBB 2006). The 30% difference between the calculated fuel consumption and the figures reported by Swiss Federal Railways can be attributed to the assumptions made in the model, but also to the criteria used by the SBB for recording diesel consumption. Development of fuel consumption from 1980 to 2020 Diesel consumption by railway machinery will increase slightly over the next few years, namely by 13% between 2005 and 2020 (see Fig. 48, bottom). At the same time, large shunting locomotives (> 560 kW) will increase in importance.
