Non-road fuel consumption and pollutant emissions FOEN 2008 72 8.1.2 Emissions Here, too, in terms of pollutant emissions (Fig. 37, top), it is tyre and caterpillar loaders and hydraulic excavators that head the list. Development of pollutant emissions from 1980 to 2020 Nitrogen oxide emissions can be expected to fall sharply in the next few years thanks to the applicable European exhaust regulations (Fig. 37, bottom left). In 2020, emissions should only be around a quarter of the present-day level. Above all, large machines (> 75 kW) will be subject to more stringent emission limit values with effect from 2014 following the introduction of EU IV. The forecast concerning the development of PM emissions is even more positive (Fig. 37, bottom right), though it is based on the assumption that, following the introduction of EU stage IIIB, older machines that have not been equipped with particle filters by the manufacturer will continue to be retrofitted (assumption as per depiction in Fig. 20). It is specifically assumed that, in 2020, all construction machines with an engine power > 37 kW will be equipped with a particle filter. This would mean that, by the above date, it would be possible to reduce PM emissions from construction machinery to 3% of the level recorded in 2005. Thanks to efforts carried out to date, it has proved possible to reduce PM emissions from construction machinery by 33% versus the maximum level recorded in 2005.
