6.8 Military machinery
The inventory and operating hours of military machinery are based on recent data
provided by the military authorities (defence and logistics basis). The inventory in this
report does not correspond to the effective figures of the Swiss Federal Department of
Defence, Civil Protection and Sport, since some of the vehicles and machines are no
longer in use as a result of the reduction in the size of the army. The equipment concerned
has either been decommissioned or rendered inactive (e. g. some of the army’s
tanks), and thus no longer consumes fuel. Here, only those vehicles and machines that
are actually in use – whether for training purposes or in the service of the population
(e. g. in the event of natural disasters or other emergencies) – have been included in the
inventory.
By contrast with the previous non-road inventory (SAEFL 1996a), military construction
machines and boats have been included here.
Inventory
As we can see from Figure 28 (top left), tanks head the inventory of military machines,
and these have very high engine power (in some cases > 560 kW). Almost all machines
are equipped with diesel engines, except for a few boats.
Operating hours and their chronological development from 1980 to 2020
Tanks are also predominant in terms of operating hours of military machinery.
According to information provided by the Swiss Federal Department of Defence, Civil
Protection and Sport, a slight reduction in the use of military machines is to be expected
in the future.
