Non-road fuel consumption and pollutant emissions FOEN 2008 98 8.8 Military machinery 8.8.1 Fuel consumption In 2005, the fuel consumption of machines used for military purposes amounted to 1100 tonnes. The proportion of petrol was very low (14 tonnes), since this fuel is only used for certain types of boats. Tanks account for the highest proportion (90%) of the overall fuel consumption (Fig. 50, top), while military construction machinery only accounts for 6%. According to information provided by the Swiss Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport, in 2002 armoured vehicles (wheeled and caterpillar) and special vehicles consumed 61 TJ, or 1400 tonnes of diesel. Development of fuel consumption from 1980 to 2020 Fuel consumption for military purposes is expected to decrease over the next few years, and in 2020 should even fall below the level recorded in 1980 (Fig. 50, bottom).
