Distribution of countries and territories
The country distributions presented are for statistical convenience only and follow those used by the Statistics Division, Department of Economic and Social
Affairs (DESA) of the United Nations. They are grouped by economic criteria or membership of trade agreements for the purposes of statistical analysis and
research. The term “economies”, as used in this report, describes regions, countries and territories.
There is no established convention for the designation of “developed” and “developing” countries or areas in the United Nations system. In common practice,
Israel and Japan in Asia, Bermuda, Canada, Greenland, Saint Pierre et Miquelon, and the United States in northern America, Australia and New Zealand in
Oceania, and Europe are considered “developed” regions or areas. This report includes all UN member states divided into three major categories: developing
countries, transition economies and developed countries.
The designations employed do not imply the expression of any opinion whatsoever on the part of the United Nations concerning the legal status of any
country, territory, city or area, or of its authorities, or concerning the delimitation of its frontiers or boundaries.
The designations “developing”, “in transition”, and “developed” are intended for statistical convenience and do not necessarily express a judgement about the
stage reached by a particular country or area in the development process.
