Ten major countries of supply to the UN system in <str<strong>on</strong>g>2009</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

The 10 major countries to supply <strong>United</strong> Nati<strong>on</strong>s organizati<strong>on</strong>s in <str<strong>on</strong>g>2009</str<strong>on</strong>g> included three developing countries – India, Sudan<br />

and Afghanistan. India has featured in this list since 2000, and in <str<strong>on</strong>g>2009</str<strong>on</strong>g>, was the third largest supplier to the <strong>United</strong> Nati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

system, with a 4.9 percent share of total <strong>United</strong> Nati<strong>on</strong>s procurement volume. <strong>Procurement</strong> from India includes vaccines,<br />

pharmaceuticals and medical equipment purchased primarily by UNICEF. <strong>Procurement</strong> from Afghanistan c<strong>on</strong>sisted primarily<br />

of c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> and transport services executed through nati<strong>on</strong>al c<strong>on</strong>tractors by UNDP and UNOPS respectively. <strong>Procurement</strong><br />

from Sudan also c<strong>on</strong>sisted of c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> and transport services as well as fuel oils procured by the <strong>United</strong> Nati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

<strong>Procurement</strong> Divisi<strong>on</strong> (UN/PD) and WFP.<br />

The percentage share of total goods and services procured from the top 10 major countries of supply to the <strong>United</strong> Nati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

system had a promising decreasing trend between 2004 and 2006 and thereby broadening the geographical spread of UN<br />

procurement. Between 2006 and <str<strong>on</strong>g>2009</str<strong>on</strong>g> (see Figure 3) this downward trend has reversed and the procurement share of the<br />

top ten countries of supply to the <strong>United</strong> Nati<strong>on</strong>s has increased. During this period the percentage share has increased by 12<br />

percent, the <str<strong>on</strong>g>2009</str<strong>on</strong>g> level of 46 percent is however, <strong>on</strong>ly <strong>on</strong>e percent lower than the level recorded in 2004.<br />
