Total procurement of goods and services for operati<strong>on</strong>al activities of the UN system<br />

The overall procurement volume (goods and services combined) of <strong>United</strong> Nati<strong>on</strong>s organizati<strong>on</strong>s during <str<strong>on</strong>g>2009</str<strong>on</strong>g> increased to<br />

$13.8 billi<strong>on</strong>, from $13.6 billi<strong>on</strong> in 2008 – a gain of 1.5 percent. The total procurement of goods decreased by $360 milli<strong>on</strong>, a<br />

reducti<strong>on</strong> of 5.3 percent, while procurement of services grew by $563 milli<strong>on</strong>, an increase of 8.2 percent. Between 2005 and<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>2009</str<strong>on</strong>g>, <strong>United</strong> Nati<strong>on</strong>s procurement volume increased from $8.3 billi<strong>on</strong> to $13.8 billi<strong>on</strong>, primarily attributable to a $3.6 billi<strong>on</strong><br />

growth in the procurement of services in the same period.<br />

From 2005 to <str<strong>on</strong>g>2009</str<strong>on</strong>g>, <strong>United</strong> Nati<strong>on</strong>s system procurement of services rose as a share of total procurement, slightly overtaking<br />

the procurement share of goods for the first time in 2006 and again in 2008, increasing even further in <str<strong>on</strong>g>2009</str<strong>on</strong>g>. In <str<strong>on</strong>g>2009</str<strong>on</strong>g>, the share<br />

of services exceeded that of goods by 7.3 percent compared to just 0.6 percent in 2008, representing the largest increase in the<br />

history of the <str<strong>on</strong>g>Annual</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Statistical</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Report</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />
