<strong>United</strong> Nati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>Procurement</strong> and the Global Compact<br />

UN agencies, in cooperati<strong>on</strong> with their suppliers, are increasingly trying to ‘buy for a better world’. They are looking<br />

bey<strong>on</strong>d traditi<strong>on</strong>al ec<strong>on</strong>omic parameters to make decisi<strong>on</strong>s based <strong>on</strong> life-cycle costs and associated envir<strong>on</strong>mental and social<br />

implicati<strong>on</strong>s, to help producers - especially in the developing world - become more efficient and competitive in larger markets.<br />

For the third year, the <str<strong>on</strong>g>Annual</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Statistical</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Report</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>2009</str<strong>on</strong>g> features an analysis of the participati<strong>on</strong> of UN suppliers in the world’s<br />

largest global corporate citizenship initiative, the Global Compact.<br />

• In 1999, the <strong>United</strong> Nati<strong>on</strong>s Secretary General Kofi Annan challenged the business leaders gathered at the<br />

World Ec<strong>on</strong>omic Forum in Davos to develop greater social and envir<strong>on</strong>mental resp<strong>on</strong>sibility in their business<br />

activities. He offered them a new compact of shared values and principles, to give a human face to the global<br />

market: the Global Compact.<br />

• The Global Compact is a framework for businesses that are committed to aligning their operati<strong>on</strong>s and<br />

strategies with ten universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labour, the envir<strong>on</strong>ment and<br />

anti-corrupti<strong>on</strong>. As the world’s largest global corporate citizenship initiative, the Global Compact is a voluntary<br />

scheme, a learning dialogue and a platform for acti<strong>on</strong>.<br />

<strong>Procurement</strong> from Global Compact members as a percentage of orders of $30,000 or more<br />

The percentage of <strong>United</strong> Nati<strong>on</strong>s procurement volume which comes from c<strong>on</strong>tracts with Global Compact members has<br />

increased over the period 2006-<str<strong>on</strong>g>2009</str<strong>on</strong>g>, reaching 16.22 percent in <str<strong>on</strong>g>2009</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />
