Specific course requirements may vary among medical colleges but, in general, the following list of premedical
courses should be taken. Responsibility for meeting requirements for each school rests solely with the
applicant. Students should choose a major of interest and follow the requirements for that major while
completing the necessary pre-medical courses. Majors may include natural sciences, social sciences, the arts, or
humanities.
The MCAT exam is required for medical school applications.
UNO Pre-medical Advising Program: www.unomaha.edu/premed
Can Advanced Placement (AP) or CLEP examinations fulfill the pre-med
requirements?
For UNMC’s College of Medicine:
No courses taken for Advanced Placement or CLEP may count as one of the required pre-medicine courses. It is preferred
that if a student has already been given credit for a pre-med course via one of these exams, the student take an upper-level
course in that area, rather than repeating the same course. Dual enrollment credits do count toward courses.
For Creighton University’s College of Medicine:
Yes. Courses taken for both AP and CLEP are acceptable.
Pre-medicine
edicine Student Timeline
Students are advised to start Biology and Chemistry classes early because CHEM 4650 Biochemistry I is offered ONLY in the Fall
semester at UNO, and requires that students have passed CHEM 2260 Organic Chemistry II and (BIOL 3020 Molecular Biology or
CHEM 2400/2404 Quantitative Analysis). Alternatively, UNMC accepts CHEM 4610 Biochemistry of Metabolism in place of
Biochemistry I and II.
Courses marked with M should be completed BEFORE taking the MCAT exam.
