1. Notes on calculation methods used <strong>in</strong> the
prevalence estimation tables
CALCULATION SHEET SUMMARY (1)
Overall calculation and presentation scheme
The locales for the four cities study component and the other study locales are estimated separately.
The overall estimation scheme has been to estimate the prevalence of addiction <strong>in</strong> each of the four
prov<strong>in</strong>ces of S<strong>in</strong>dh, Punjab, NWFP and Balochistan separately, as far as possible, <strong>in</strong> order to derive the
prevalence for <strong>Pakistan</strong> as a whole. The F.A.T.A. has not been <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> the prevalence estimate as a
separate figure.
With<strong>in</strong> each of these prov<strong>in</strong>ces, prevalence has been estimated (i) for the pr<strong>in</strong>cipal locale that contributed
to the four cities study component of the National Assessment, namely Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar and
Quetta respectively; and (ii) with<strong>in</strong> each prov<strong>in</strong>ce also for the rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g locales chosen for study.
The tables therefore present data for each of the four cities locales and for the totals of 'all other' locales
with<strong>in</strong> each prov<strong>in</strong>ce—giv<strong>in</strong>g eight 'locale-group<strong>in</strong>gs'—and for all study locales comb<strong>in</strong>ed.
Data structures and estimate breakdowns used:
1. Locale demographic Profiles
Basic data provided by the Census is used, us<strong>in</strong>g figures for each of the locales <strong>in</strong> the study
Section 1 of the table establishes the key figure of the number of males <strong>in</strong> the locale-group<strong>in</strong>gs, derived
from the figures provided <strong>in</strong> the 1998 National Census, Census Bullet<strong>in</strong>-1, along with other demographic
characteristics.

This next step reduces the overall male population to target the most important age band of 15 to 45 years
Section 2 of the table presents the estimated percentage of the male population that lies <strong>in</strong> the target ageband
of 15 to 44 years of age. The <strong>in</strong>itial figures were derived from the 1998 National Census Bullet<strong>in</strong> 6.
