Data on prisons activity <strong>in</strong> the four cities
Prison data collection
An audit of local prison and treatment activity data was conducted <strong>in</strong> the four selected cities.
This <strong>in</strong>formation was needed to <strong>in</strong>form the prevalence estimation exercise and was also useful
for explor<strong>in</strong>g the impact that hero<strong>in</strong> <strong>abuse</strong> was hav<strong>in</strong>g on the local prison services. Prison
activity data were collected for the ma<strong>in</strong> prison deal<strong>in</strong>g with drug offences for each of the four
cities. This would audit a high proportion of total cases <strong>in</strong> each area and give some <strong>in</strong>formation
on the k<strong>in</strong>ds of offences that drug <strong>abuse</strong>rs were <strong>in</strong>carcerated for. The audit focused on
collect<strong>in</strong>g detailed <strong>in</strong>formation on prison occupancy by drug addicts and those <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong>
lower levels of sell<strong>in</strong>g drugs, specifically, the number of people sent to prison <strong>in</strong> the last
year for drug use and drug-related offences for each city. This data is summarized <strong>in</strong> table 20
and 21.
