Origin of French street names<br />

In every country there are typical street<br />

names that repeat in every city and let<br />

us know the personalities who played an<br />

important role in the history of the country<br />

and the respective city. Below you will<br />

find a list of street names common<br />

in France and afterwards a list of street<br />

names characteristic of the region of<br />

Champagne - Ar<strong>de</strong>nne.<br />

Aristi<strong>de</strong> Briand Square<br />

Artisti<strong>de</strong> Briand (1862 – 1932) was a French<br />

politician and diplomat, he was presi<strong>de</strong>nt<br />

of the Council eleven times and minister<br />

twenty times. In 1905 he enacted the law<br />

separating the church and the state. He<br />

played an important role in French-German<br />

reconciliation, the Locarno treaties, and the<br />

first project <strong>for</strong> European integration. He<br />

received the Nobel Prize <strong>for</strong> Peace in 1925.<br />

Jean Jaurès Avenue<br />

Jean Jaurès (1859 – 1914) is one of the great<br />

proponents of the French socialism. An anticolonialist,<br />

pacifist and a great speaker, he<br />

<strong>de</strong>fen<strong>de</strong>d the un<strong>de</strong>rdogs, from the miners<br />

to captain Dreyfus. Because of his opposition<br />

to France‘s entry into the war in 1914, he<br />

was assassinated in the middle of Paris by<br />

Raoul Villain, a nationalist.<br />

Georges Clémenceau<br />

Among the great politicians of the Third<br />

Republic three were equally successful at<br />

the Tribune of the Parliament and as writers:<br />

Jaurès, Gambetta and Clemenceau. Georges<br />

Clémenceau (1841 – 1929) won more<br />

than one battle during his political carrier of<br />

half of a century. From the „<strong>de</strong>stroyer of<br />

ministries“ to „Father of Victory“ through<br />

the „strike breaker“ and as an ar<strong>de</strong>nt<br />

<strong>de</strong>fen<strong>de</strong>r of Dreyfus, was a man of numerous<br />

triumphs. He was presi<strong>de</strong>nt of the Council<br />

in 1914.<br />
