awaRds<br />
The <strong>Unisa</strong> Women in <strong>Research</strong> Initiative<br />
(UWiRI) is a programme designed to enhance<br />
and elevate the levels <strong>of</strong> women’s participation<br />
in research at <strong>Unisa</strong>. The programme entails<br />
the provision <strong>of</strong> financial support for women<br />
doing doctoral research, the conducting <strong>of</strong> an<br />
annual audit <strong>of</strong> the pr<strong>of</strong>iles <strong>of</strong> <strong>Unisa</strong> women<br />
in research, the showcasing <strong>of</strong> research<br />
conducted by women at <strong>Unisa</strong>, as well as the<br />
advocacy initiatives for women in research at<br />
<strong>Unisa</strong>.<br />
The UWiRI awards form an integral part <strong>of</strong> the<br />
initiative and awards are based on work done<br />
by women researchers over the preceding two<br />
to three years. Each award is worth R50 000.<br />
Ten women researchers received recognition<br />
awards for research in the following categories:<br />
• <strong>Research</strong> leadership (for researchers who<br />
not only lead by example, but through their<br />
efforts also enable other researchers)<br />
• Resilience in <strong>Research</strong> (for inspirational<br />
researchers, who have obtained research<br />
success in difficult circumstances)<br />
• First Scientific Publication (for a first<br />
scientific publication that is judged excellent<br />
by peers)<br />
• youngest PhD Staff Member (researchers<br />
under 30 who have already obtained their<br />
PhD and whose PhD is considered to be <strong>of</strong><br />
the highest quality by peers and examiners).<br />

(College <strong>of</strong> Human Sciences)<br />
Department <strong>of</strong> Health Studies<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essor and Academic Chair and Director WHO<br />
collaborating Centre<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>. Mogotlane is the Deputy Chairperson<br />
<strong>of</strong> the new and transformed <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>n<br />
nursing Council that was launched by the<br />
Minister <strong>of</strong> Health in June <strong>2008</strong>; a member <strong>of</strong><br />
the Democratic nurses Organisation <strong>of</strong> <strong>South</strong><br />
<strong>Africa</strong>, United kingdom Central Council for<br />
nurses and Midwives; and Founder Member <strong>of</strong><br />
the Paediatric nurses Association in kwazulunatal.<br />
She has also been the recipient <strong>of</strong> several<br />
prestigious awards, while also publishing widely<br />
in her field. notably, she is the Executive Editor<br />
<strong>of</strong> the <strong>Africa</strong> Journal <strong>of</strong> Nursing and Midwifery,<br />
which is published by the Department <strong>of</strong> Health<br />
Studies at <strong>Unisa</strong>. She is rated by the national<br />
<strong>Research</strong> Foundation (nRF) as an established<br />
researcher.<br />
ResILIence In ReseARch<br />
Dr Mapule Mojapelo-Bakta<br />
(College <strong>of</strong> Human Sciences)<br />
Department <strong>of</strong> Psychology, Lecturer<br />
Dr Mojapelo-Bakta started working at <strong>Unisa</strong> in<br />
1995, at the Department <strong>of</strong> Psychology, as a<br />
messenger. In 1996, she was promoted to the<br />
level <strong>of</strong> General Departmental Receptionist. She<br />
persevered, and after completing her master’s<br />
degree in Clinical Psychology in 2000, she<br />
began to publish. Thirteen years afterstarting<br />
work at <strong>Unisa</strong> as a messenger, she completed<br />
her PhD in May <strong>2008</strong>. She graduated in<br />
September <strong>2008</strong>.<br />
Dr Simiso Dube (College <strong>of</strong> Science,<br />
Engineering and Technology)<br />
Department <strong>of</strong> Chemistry, Lecturer<br />
Dr Dube is a well respected chemist and one<br />
<strong>of</strong> the founders <strong>of</strong> the <strong>South</strong>ern and Eastern<br />
<strong>Africa</strong> network <strong>of</strong> Analytical Chemists, a network<br />
formed in Gaborone in 2002. In addition<br />
to publishing widely in international journals<br />
and successfully supervising postgraduate<br />
students in her field, she has also been a<br />
recipient <strong>of</strong> various international fellowships.<br />
She holds a PhD in Analytical Chemistry from<br />
loughborough <strong>University</strong>, Uk.<br />
Dr Prudence Kayoka (College <strong>of</strong> Agriculture<br />
and Environmental Sciences)<br />
Department <strong>of</strong> Agriculture, Animal Health and<br />
Human Ecology<br />
Head <strong>of</strong> Department and Senior lecturer<br />
Dr kayoka, a doctor <strong>of</strong> veterinary medicine, has<br />
overcome many challenges whilst making an<br />
impact in her field <strong>of</strong> animal health through her<br />
publications and active engagements. Ever determined<br />
to broaden her intellectual horizons,<br />
she is now a Thuthuka grant holder registered<br />
for her PhD in Environmental Sciences.<br />
fIRsT PUbLIcATIon<br />
Ms Marlene Wethmar-Lemmer<br />
(College <strong>of</strong> Law)<br />
Department <strong>of</strong> Jurisprudence, Senior lecturer<br />
Ms Wethmar-lemmer joined <strong>Unisa</strong> as a temporary<br />
lecturer in 2004, and received her llM<br />
(cum laude) from the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Johannes-<br />
Recipients <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Unisa</strong> Women in <strong>Research</strong> Initiative awards: Dr Marie Jorritsma, Dr Simiso Dube,<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>. Sophie Mogotlane, Dr Prudence Kayoka, Ms Marlene Wethmar-Lemmer, Dr Mpfariseni Budeli,<br />
