Children over the age of<br />

limit have to pay <strong>for</strong> their<br />

healthcare according to a<br />

means-tested sliding scale.<br />

Patients are classified<br />

according to their level<br />

of income <strong>and</strong> charged<br />

a rate, which increases<br />

as the level of income<br />

increases. For example: vii<br />

<br />

level H1 are those<br />

in households with<br />

unmarried parents<br />

that earn less than<br />

R36 000 per annum,<br />

or in households with<br />

married parents with a<br />

combined gross income<br />

of less than R50 000<br />

per annum. Patients at<br />

this level are charged<br />

an all-inclusive flat fee<br />

as an inpatient or an<br />

outpatient;<br />

<br />

level H2 are those<br />

in households with<br />

unmarried parents<br />

that earn between<br />

R36 000 <strong>and</strong> R72 000<br />

per annum, or in<br />

households with<br />

married parents with a<br />

combined gross income<br />

of between R50 000 <strong>and</strong><br />

R100 000 per annum.<br />

Patients at this level are<br />

charged 50 per cent of<br />

the full public hospital<br />

tariffs (Uni<strong>for</strong>m Patient<br />

Fee Schedule [UPFS]<br />

tariffs);<br />

Children <strong>and</strong> families<br />

living in poverty<br />

What must be provided<br />

when applying?<br />

Proof of income has to<br />

be submitted.<br />

Income is the combined<br />

gross family income of<br />

the parent(s) or primary<br />
