Drop-in<br />
centres<br />
A drop-in centre is<br />
a facility providing<br />
basic <strong>services</strong> aimed at<br />
meeting the emotional,<br />
physical <strong>and</strong> social<br />
development needs of<br />
<strong>vulnerable</strong> children. lxx<br />
They are currently<br />
defined by the DoSD as<br />
‘any premises used <strong>for</strong><br />
the reception, protection<br />
<strong>and</strong> temporary care of<br />
more than 6 children<br />
between the ages of 8<br />
months <strong>and</strong> 18 years –<br />
in especially difficult<br />
circumstance’. lxxi<br />
Targeted priority<br />
beneficiaries<br />
Children in communities<br />
where families lack the<br />
means of providing<br />
proper shelter, food <strong>and</strong><br />
other basic necessities of<br />
life to their children<br />
Children with disabilities<br />
Drop-in centres are run<br />
by registered non-profit<br />
organisations.<br />
They must, however,<br />
be registered <strong>and</strong> run<br />
in accordance with the<br />
norms <strong>and</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ards<br />
prescribed by the Act.<br />
The DoSD registers <strong>and</strong><br />
partially funds a number<br />
of these centres.<br />
A drop-in centre must<br />
be a registered nonprofit<br />
organisation <strong>and</strong><br />
must be registered with<br />
the provincial DoSD.<br />
It must comply with the<br />
norms <strong>and</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ards<br />
to be developed in<br />
terms of the Children’s<br />
Amendment Act.<br />
A drop-in centre<br />
must, in terms of the<br />
Children’s Act, offer the<br />
following <strong>services</strong>:<br />
