Qualifying criteria xxv<br />

The applicant must be<br />

a South African citizen,<br />

permanent resident or<br />

refugee.<br />

The applicant must be<br />

resident in South Africa.<br />

The applicant must be<br />

between 18–60 years<br />

of age if a woman <strong>and</strong><br />

18–61 if a man (this will<br />

drop to 60 as from 1<br />

April 2010).<br />

The application must<br />

be supported by a<br />

medical/assessment<br />

report confirming the<br />

disability.<br />

The applicant must not<br />

be maintained or cared<br />

<strong>for</strong> by a state institution.<br />

The applicant may not<br />

be receiving any other<br />

social grant.<br />

The applicant <strong>and</strong><br />

applicant’s spouse<br />

must meet the means<br />

test income <strong>and</strong> asset<br />

threshold.<br />

Income threshold<br />

If single, not more<br />

than R2 606 per month<br />

(R31 296 per year). If<br />

married, a joint income of<br />

no more than R5 216 per<br />

month (R65 593 per year).<br />

Asset threshold xxvi<br />

If unmarried, assets<br />

less than R518 400 are<br />

regarded as below the<br />

threshold <strong>and</strong>, if married,<br />

joint assets up to the<br />

value of R1 036 800 will<br />

fall below the threshold.<br />
