The aim of the centres<br />

is to reduce secondary<br />

victimisation, improve<br />

conviction rates <strong>and</strong><br />

reduce the cycle time <strong>for</strong><br />

finalisation of cases.<br />

Most of the sites are<br />

linked to public hospitals<br />

close to communities<br />

where the incidence of<br />

rape is especially high.<br />

Services offered at the<br />

centres include: xviii<br />

from a site coordinator<br />

or nurse;<br />

<br />

how the medical<br />

examination will be<br />

conducted <strong>and</strong> what<br />

clothing may be taken<br />

<strong>for</strong> evidence;<br />

<br />

is provided <strong>and</strong><br />

explained to allow the<br />

doctor to conduct the<br />

medical examination;<br />

<br />

examination, a bath or<br />

shower is available <strong>for</strong><br />

the victim to use;<br />

<br />

will interview the<br />

survivor <strong>and</strong> take his<br />

or her statement;<br />

<br />

or nurse will offer<br />

counselling;<br />

<br />

<strong>for</strong> follow-up visits,<br />

treatment <strong>and</strong><br />

medication <strong>for</strong> sexually<br />

transmitted infections,<br />

including HIV/AIDS;<br />
