The IMCI programme<br />

seeks to provide <strong>services</strong><br />

that will promote<br />

child well-being<br />

through monitoring<br />

<strong>and</strong> promoting; that<br />

will prevent illness (e.g.<br />

through immunisations);<br />

<strong>and</strong> which will cure <strong>and</strong><br />

rehabilitate ill children.<br />

It provides <strong>for</strong> the<br />

delivery of <strong>services</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

regulation of st<strong>and</strong>ard<br />

case management of<br />

priority child health<br />

conditions in accordance<br />

with protocols,<br />

including pneumonia,<br />

diarrhoea, fever <strong>and</strong><br />

malnutrition, HIV/<br />

AIDS <strong>and</strong> TB, anaemia<br />

<strong>and</strong> micronutrient<br />

deficiencies, intestinal<br />

parasite control,<br />

identification <strong>and</strong><br />

treatment of ear<br />

conditions <strong>and</strong> asthma<br />

as well as childhood<br />

illnesses such as<br />

measles.<br />

Targeted beneficiaries<br />

Children under the age<br />

of six<br />

Public sector clinics<br />

<strong>and</strong> hospitals<br />

Each clinic is<br />

supposed to have two<br />

staff members trained<br />

on the IMCI protocol<br />

<strong>and</strong> should be<br />

subject to six-monthly<br />

assessments of quality<br />

of care.<br />

Extended<br />

programme<br />

on<br />

immunisation<br />

The programme<br />

provides vaccinations/<br />

immunisations to<br />

prevent measles,<br />

tuberculosis, tetanus,<br />

diphtheria, Rotavirus <strong>and</strong><br />

Pneumococcal diseases.<br />

Targeted beneficiaries<br />

All children between<br />

birth <strong>and</strong> 12 years of<br />

age<br />

All infants <strong>and</strong> children<br />

that are HIV+<br />

All primary healthcare<br />

facilities<br />

The immunisation<br />

schedule as at 1 April<br />

2009 was as follows:<br />
