PEP
treatment for
children who
have been
sexually
assaulted
Children who have
been sexually assaulted
may access PEP after
the assault. xxxiii The
treatment is free.
PEP is available if the
child has been sexually
assaulted and tests HIV
negative. If the child is
not emotionally ready to
be tested and counselled
when reporting the
assault, or if the test
results are not available,
the child should be
started on PEP with a
three-day starter pack
while waiting to be
tested or for the results
to become available. If
the results come back
positive, the child should
be counselled and
referred to appropriate
services for management
and support. If the
results come back
negative, a full course of
PEP treatment should be
provided. xxxv
Targeted beneficiaries
