The DoH’s policies<br />

regarding infant <strong>and</strong><br />

young child feeding have<br />

these primary goals:<br />

<br />

status, growth,<br />

development <strong>and</strong><br />

health of infants <strong>and</strong><br />

young children;<br />

<br />

to child transmission<br />

of HIV in the postnatal<br />

period through<br />

breastfeeding;<br />

<br />

of HIV-exposed<br />

infants through<br />

appropriate feeding<br />

options, supported<br />

by appropriate ARV<br />

treatment regimes<br />

<strong>for</strong> the lactating<br />

mother <strong>and</strong> baby. The<br />

relevant ARV treatment<br />

regimes <strong>for</strong> pregnant<br />

<strong>and</strong> lactating women<br />

<strong>and</strong> those who have<br />

infants, as well as <strong>for</strong><br />

infants, are discussed<br />

later in this table.<br />

These objectives are to<br />

be achieved through:<br />

<br />

<strong>and</strong> support of optimal<br />

safe feeding of infants<br />

<strong>and</strong> young children;<br />

<br />

<strong>and</strong> support of<br />

breastfeeding through<br />

counselling <strong>and</strong><br />

support to mothers by<br />

healthcare personnel<br />

during antenatal, intrapartum,<br />

post-natal <strong>and</strong><br />

follow-up care.<br />

provide in<strong>for</strong>mation<br />

on mixed infant<br />

feeding.<br />
