Foreword
The Brewery History Society (BHS) was founded in 1972 to promote research into all aspects of
the brewing industry, to encourage the interchange of information about breweries and brewing,
and to collect photographic and other archive information about brewery history. The Society
publishes a Newsletter and a quarterly journal Brewery History, which first appeared in 1972. It
has also published a national directory and a series of county-wide surveys of historic breweries;
the Society’s archive is held by Birmingham Central Library. Further details of BHS activities may
be found at .
The ongoing threat to the historic fabric of the English brewing industry was discussed at
the conference From Grain to Glass, organised jointly by English Heritage (EH), the BHS and the
Association for Industrial Archaeology (AIA), which took place at Swindon on 13 June 2003; the
joint BHS and Victorian Society study day From Hop to Hostelry: the brewing and licensed trades 1837
-1914 (Young’s Ram Brewery, Wandsworth, 25 February 2006); and during the AIA Ironbridge
Working Weekend (Coalbrookdale, 29 April 2006). Following this EH agreed to support a project
on ‘The Brewing Industry’, which was carried out between July 2007 and September 2009. Its
aims were to provide up to date information on all pre-1940 operating breweries, to compile a
comprehensive list of historic brewery buildings (the computerised BHS Breweries Database), to
consider the future of the industry’s archives, and to undertake a national assessment on the
industry, in the form of a Strategy for the Historic Industrial Environment report (SHIER).

The Brewing Industry: Archive Report
This report attempts to summarise the changes relating to the archives of the brewing industry since the
publication of Richmond and Turton’s comprehensive The brewing industry: A guide to historical records in
1990. The two most notable events have been the dispersal of records: the Whitbread Archive in 2001 and
the Allied Breweries Archive in 2002-3, but there have of course been many other depositions (see
Appendix). In the 21st century online searching has made research much simpler, the Access to Archives
portal of the National Archives website always being a good starting point (www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/
a2a/). In addition, the Business Archives Council published its National Strategy for Business Archives in
England and Wales in July 2009.

Records held by London Metropolitan Archives include those of large brewing companies such as Courage
& Co; Watney Combe Reid; Truman Hanbury Buxton; Fuller, Smith and Turner; and London-related items

The archive of the Brewery History Society, which was originally based on items from the Brewers’ Society,

The Modern Records Centre holds a collection of records from various brewers’ organisations including the
Brewers’ Society, Country Brewers’ Society, Brewing Patents Limited and the National Trade Defence

The National Brewing Library comprises over 3,500 volumes; about a quarter of the items are unique to the
collection and do not appear in the catalogues of other major collections including the British Library. The
National Brewing Library is based on the combined libraries of the Institute of Brewing, the International
Brewers’ Guild, the technical reference library of the Brewers and Licensed Retailers Association, plus the
book collection contained within the Whitbread Archive. It continues to be augmented with newlypublished
books related to brewing, and by donations of older books from companies and individuals. In
2008 it aquired the archive of the late Michael Jackson (1942-2007), the beer writer. The National Brewing
Library catalogue may be downloaded from the website in various formats.
1.5 Scottish Brewing Archive

As well as its huge collection of records relating to the Scottish brewing industry, the Scottish Brewing
Archive has a small number of items relating to English breweries. Its website includes guides to periodical
holdings and an alphabetical index of company holdings.

2 Whitbread Archive
The Whitbread Archive was closed in 2001. Some material was kept by Whitbread plc, but the core
collection of historic ledgers was deposited at nearly 50 different record offices; many other items were
donated to museums. London Metropolitan Archives holds the records of Whitbread’s Chiswell Street
Brewery and the company’s London area subsidiaries. They have been catalogued, and details of the
holdings - which extend for well over 100 metres of shelving - are available in the London Metropolitan
Archives online catalogue.
3 Allied Breweries Archive
The Allied Breweries Archive was held at Burton upon Trent until 2002-3, when it was dispersed to 70
different record offices. The story of the rescue of the archives - an estimated 7.5 tons of material - is told in
Anderson and Brown (2003). Recipients of the largest amount of English material were the London
Metropolitan Archives (see section 1.1 above) and the Bass Museum (see section 4 below). Not all have yet
been catalogued, and even when catalogued, they may not appear immediately on the Access to Archives
website.
4 Bass Archive
The Bass Archive was still at Molson Coors Brewing Company (UK) Ltd and the Coors Visitor Centre (see
Richmond and Turton p58) in early 2010. The Allied Breweries, Allsopp’s and Ind Coope records formerly
held at Allied Breweries in Burton (see Richmond and Turton pp41,43,191) were transferred to the Coors
Visitor Centre in 2003. Following the closure of the Visitor Centre in June 2008, it was thought that these
archives might be moved to the Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent Archive Service, but it appears that they
will remain at what is to be the National Brewery Centre, due to open in April 2010.
5 Courage Archive
The Courage Archive was formerly kept on the Courage site in Bristol (previously Bristol Brewery
Georges), but brewing ceased there in 1999 and the area is currently being redeveloped. The archive is now
based at Avonmouth, where there is no direct public access, although research can be undertaken by the
archivist, Dr Ken Thomas (email capelnewydd@tiscali.co.uk). The postal address is: Courage Archive, c/o
Harrow Green, Portview Road, Avonmouth, Bristol BS11 9JG. See Richmond and Turton pp116-9 for
details of the holdings. In addition, the London Metropolitan Archives has a large holding of Courage & Co
material (ACC/2305).
6 How to locate brewing archive material
The first port of call in the hunt for archive material should be the Access to Archives section of the
National Archives website (www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/a2a/). The database contains catalogues
describing archives held locally in England and Wales, and searching on the word ‘brewery’ produces
14,017 results. These can be narrowed down by specific local archive, or by archives in a region; for
instance, the North East has 191 holdings. Use the advanced search function to search by specific brewery
name. In general archive work, broader searches are often useful, for instance adding an asterisk to a word
as a ‘wildcard’ - for instance brew* - where it can stand for any number of letters, in this case giving
brewery, breweries, brewer and so forth. Allied topics such as malting may also provide relevant results.
The English Heritage website offers access to a number of searchable photographic and archival
sources; from its home page (www.english-heritage.org.uk), select the ‘Learning and Resources’ section
then look for Online Resources. These include ViewFinder, a photographic archive; Pastscape, for records
in the national historic environment database; Images of England, with descriptions and photographs of
listed buildings up to the year 2000; and the Heritage Gateway, which allows the user to search across
national and local records of historic sites and buildings. See section 10 below for website addresses.
Another useful source is the British Library’s searchable archive of British Newspapers 1800-1900. The

website http://newspapers.bl.uk/blcs/ provides a limited amount of free access, while further access can
be paid for by individual subscriber and the whole site is available free of charge in some public and other
libraries.
Note that archives of a local brewery may not always be held locally, and even if there are holdings,
they may not yet have been catalogued. Contact local repositories directly to enquire about access to
specific archives. There may also be material located in repositories abroad. Of course, many business
records are still held by operating breweries. Conversely, former breweries may have virtually no archival
material at all. In this case the use of other sources such as local newspapers, obituaries, directories and
census returns may be necessary. The article by Peter Mathias, Brewing archives: their nature and use (1990),
provides an excellent introduction to the scope and potential pitfalls of research into the brewing industry.

7 Dealing with archival problems resulting from brewery closures
Some brewery closures take place over a long period, and it should then be possible to plan ahead, in
conjunction with the relevant local depository (see section 8), if the company concerned wishes to deposit
archival material. If possible, build a relationship with the company over the long term, with the aim of
ensuring that as much archival material is safely deposited well before closure. In an emergency, when a
plant closure is imminent and archives are endangered, the first move is to attempt to establish relations
with the company, in order to assist them in dealing with what they may perceive only as a short-term
space problem. Try to obtain access to the archive material, and make an initial survey of what is
particularly important; it may be possible to obtain help from a local repository. Even at this late stage it
may be worth trying to encourage the company to gift or loan at least some of their material to a
depository, rather than simply get rid of it as waste. If the company will allow access and removal of
material, but nothing else by way of support for moving the archive, then the Brewery History Society or a
local repository may be able to offer assistance. As the rescue of the Allied Breweries Archive (see section 3)
showed, it is an extremely time-consuming and costly task to sort, pack and disperse a large amount of
material when a deadline is in sight.
8 Guidance on depositions
The Business Archives Council’s website www.businessarchivescouncil.org.uk is a useful source of
information for potential depositors of records. It advises that many businesses may not realise that their
historical records can be a valuable research resource; records can sometimes be seen simply as taking up
valuable office or warehouse space. Most archive repositories maintain policies of free public access. Any
deposit of records can be made either as a gift or as a long-term loan, although most repositories prefer the
records to be gifted, avoiding future ownership and copyright issues. The chances of a repository accepting
a collection are greater if it is comprehensive, that is it has not been ‘cherry-picked’ by the company for
items of obvious interest or value. A repository may have to be tempted to accept a collection by the offer
of exceptionally interesting or rare items. Most local repositories have websites that carry information for
depositors, setting out the kind of records in which they are interested, their geographical area of collection
and their terms of agreement for gifting or loans. They may also offer advice as to which items are of

9 Brewing artefacts
Although paper archives are well served by the various record offices, the situation is not as good for
artefacts; there is no national brewing museum. Little brewing equipment appears to currently be
preserved by the national museums, although many items from the Whitbread Archive were donated to
museums in 2001. Until its closure in June 2008, the Coors Visitor Centre (previously Bass Museum of
Brewing) at Burton upon Trent was in effect England’s only national brewing museum. The site is due to
reopen in April 2010 as the National Brewery Centre.

The information in this appendix is largely taken from the Accessions to Repositories section of the
National Archives website (www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/accessions). The website offers annual updates
of accessions, listed by year and by topic or repository. Users should note that material is recorded in these
annual surveys whether or not it has been catalogued; repositories should be contacted directly to check if
access to specific records is possible. Data for the years before 1994 is not available online. Entries for the
