Cardiac monitoring<br />

Position the cardiac monitor leads or defibrillation paddles<br />

as soon as possible to enable differentiation between a shockable<br />

and a non-shockable cardiac rhythm. Invasive monitoring<br />

of systemic blood pressure may help to improve effectiveness of<br />

chest compression 271 but must not delay the provision of basic or<br />

advanced resuscitation.<br />

Shockable rhythms are pulseless VT and VF. These rhythms are<br />

more likely after sudden collapse in children with heart disease or<br />

adolescents. 41–43 Non-shockable rhythms are pulseless electrical<br />
