7.4 Transition state spectroscopy<br />

Until a few years ago, the “transition state” was a rather “elusive and strange” species.<br />

This situation has completely changed (a) because of the rapidly improving quantum<br />

chemical methods for computing TS properties and (b) because of transition state<br />

spectroscopy, in the frequency domain (J. Polanyi, Kinsey), and in the time domain<br />

(Zewail).<br />
