c) Orbital angular momentum and centrifugal barrier*<br />

In the case of a non-central collision, part of the translational energy is converted<br />

to “rotational energy” (orbital angular momentum; see Fig. 5.27). This is seen by<br />

partitioning the velocity vector between the direction ( )andtheradial<br />
