DOW CHEMICAL’S USE OF THE WBCSD<br />

& GEMI ONLINE TOOLS<br />

In 2006, the Dow Chemical Company used the WBCSD Global <strong>Water</strong><br />

Tool <strong>and</strong> GEMI <strong>Water</strong> Sustainably Planner as the bases <strong>for</strong> a water-related<br />

risk assessment <strong>for</strong> all <strong>of</strong> its facilities worldwide. At the time, Dow was<br />

experiencing greater infrastructure costs <strong>and</strong> other impacts from drought<br />

in many <strong>of</strong> its facilities. However, the resources <strong>and</strong> time necessary<br />

to individually assess the situation at each <strong>of</strong> its roughly 160 facilities<br />

worldwide were prohibitive. As a result, they decided to use the available,<br />

open-source tools from WBCSD <strong>and</strong> GEMI to guide their analysis.<br />

Dow used the WBCSD Tool’s Google-powered “global address look-up<br />

capability” to map all <strong>of</strong> these sites <strong>and</strong> overlay them with water stress<br />

in<strong>for</strong>mation, both current <strong>and</strong> predictions <strong>for</strong> 2025. This allowed them to<br />

quickly <strong>and</strong> efficiently identify its facilities that were at greatest risk <strong>of</strong><br />

water stress <strong>and</strong> associated problems. Using the Tool, Dow was able to<br />

complete this phase in a number <strong>of</strong> weeks.<br />

After mapping all <strong>of</strong> its sites, Dow gathered water use data <strong>for</strong> all the<br />

sites which it determined to be at risk <strong>of</strong> water stress. As part <strong>of</strong> the data<br />

collection process, Dow sent the risk survey found in the GEMI <strong>Water</strong><br />

Sustainably Planner to experts at each <strong>of</strong> the targeted sites. The Planner<br />

provided conceptual thinking regarding possible drivers <strong>and</strong> local issues<br />

that in<strong>for</strong>m water stress <strong>and</strong> resource planning. It also generated risk<br />

factor scores <strong>for</strong> each <strong>of</strong> the following areas: <strong>Water</strong>shed, Supply Reliability,<br />

Social Context, Compliance, Efficiency, <strong>and</strong> Supply Economics. These<br />

scores were used to create risk pr<strong>of</strong>iles <strong>for</strong> each site that could be used<br />

to determine appropriate mitigation strategies.<br />

Dow’s Use <strong>of</strong> the WBCSD<br />

Global <strong>Water</strong> Tool to Identify <strong>Water</strong> Risk Hotspots<br />

produces a graph that shows the number <strong>of</strong><br />

facilities, workers, <strong>and</strong> suppliers a company<br />

has in areas <strong>of</strong> extreme scarcity, waterstressed<br />

areas, water-rich areas, etc.<br />

compared to local water context in<br />

<strong>for</strong>m <strong>of</strong> maps <strong>and</strong> through Google Earth.<br />

GEMI <strong>Water</strong> Sustainability<br />

Planner <strong>and</strong> Tool<br />

The Global Environmental Management Initiative<br />

(GEMI), a collection <strong>of</strong> dozens <strong>of</strong> mostly<br />

North American-headquartered companies<br />

working toward more responsible corporate<br />

environmental stewardship, has developed<br />

two tools to advance corporate underst<strong>and</strong>ing<br />

<strong>of</strong> water issues. Released in 2002, the <strong>Water</strong><br />

Sustainability Tool** is an online tool that<br />

helps organizations create a water strategy.<br />

It assesses a company’s relationship to water,<br />

identifies associated risks <strong>and</strong> describes the<br />

business case <strong>for</strong> action, <strong>and</strong> helps address<br />

companies’ specific needs <strong>and</strong> circumstances.<br />

It features five modules:<br />

• <strong>Water</strong> Use, Impact, <strong>and</strong> Source Assessment<br />

• Business Risk Assessment<br />

• Business Opportunity Assessment<br />

• Strategic Direction <strong>and</strong> Goal Setting<br />

• Strategy Development <strong>and</strong> Implementation<br />

The Tool does not provide a method or<br />

calculator to measure or quantify water use,<br />

impacts, <strong>and</strong> risks, but rather introduces a<br />

number <strong>of</strong> questions on these topics to facilitate<br />

companies’ underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>of</strong> various<br />

water sustainability issues. These questions<br />

act as the basis <strong>for</strong> guidance on goal setting<br />

<strong>and</strong> the development <strong>of</strong> strategic plans.<br />

The GEMI <strong>Water</strong> Sustainability Planner***—<br />

an online tool released in 2007—focuses on<br />

the needs <strong>of</strong> a facility-level user rather than<br />

the company as a whole. It helps facility<br />

personnel to better underst<strong>and</strong> the facility’s<br />

dependence on water <strong>and</strong> the status <strong>of</strong> the<br />

local watershed (including local social <strong>and</strong><br />

environmental considerations) <strong>and</strong> to identify<br />

its specific challenges <strong>and</strong> opportunities. The<br />

Planner is divided into three modules:<br />

• Facility <strong>Water</strong> Use <strong>and</strong> Impact Assessment<br />
