<strong>The</strong> Point Foundation is pleased <strong>to</strong> announce <strong>the</strong> availability <strong>of</strong> numerous scholarship opportunities for your<br />

LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) students. <strong>The</strong> Point Foundation provides financial support,<br />

men<strong>to</strong>ring and hope <strong>to</strong> meri<strong>to</strong>rious students who are marginalized due <strong>to</strong> sexual orientation, gender expression<br />

or gender identity. <strong>The</strong> Point Foundation recognizes that individuals may be socially marginalized or even<br />

abandoned by family, friends and society because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir sexual orientation, gender expression or gender<br />

identity. <strong>The</strong>se lives should not be fur<strong>the</strong>r disadvantaged as <strong>the</strong>y prepare for <strong>the</strong> future.<br />

By identifying and supporting <strong>the</strong>se scholars, <strong>The</strong> Point Foundation hopes <strong>to</strong> provide a greater level <strong>of</strong><br />

acceptance, respect and <strong>to</strong>lerance within future generations for all persons, regardless <strong>of</strong> sexual orientation,<br />

gender expression or gender identity. In addition, we strive <strong>to</strong> provide higher education opportunities <strong>to</strong><br />

outstanding students who o<strong>the</strong>rwise would not <strong>have</strong> <strong>the</strong> chance <strong>to</strong> go <strong>to</strong> school.<br />

• Union Plus Scholarship Programs<br />

Members <strong>of</strong> AFL-CIO unions participating in any Union Plus program, <strong>the</strong>ir spouses and <strong>the</strong>ir dependent<br />

children (foster children, step children, and any o<strong>the</strong>r child for whom <strong>the</strong> individual member provides greater<br />

than 50% <strong>of</strong> his or her support) can apply for a Union Plus Scholarship. (Participating AFL-CIO union members<br />

from Puer<strong>to</strong> Rico, Canada, Guam and Virgin Islands and U.S. citizens are eligible.) Members do not <strong>have</strong> <strong>to</strong><br />

purchase any Union Plus program product or participate in any Union Plus programs <strong>to</strong> apply for <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>scholarships</strong> and scholarship awards are not based upon participation in a Union Plus program.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Gates Millennium Scholars is aimed at increasing <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> low-income African Americans, Asian<br />

Pacific Americans, American Indians/Alaska Natives, and Hispanic Americans enrolling in and completing<br />

undergraduate and graduate degree programs. If students meet <strong>the</strong> specific criteria, <strong>the</strong>y should contact <strong>the</strong><br />

Financial Aid Office with <strong>the</strong> appropriate application materials <strong>to</strong> be nominated. Student should <strong>have</strong> a<br />

cumulative GPA <strong>of</strong> 3.3 on a 4.0 scale; accepted in<strong>to</strong> or enrolled full-time in an accredited college <strong>of</strong> university<br />

at <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> award; or are accepted in<strong>to</strong> our enrolled in a graduate degree program in ma<strong>the</strong>matics, science<br />

(including life sciences, physical sciences and computer science), engineering, education or library science;<br />

<strong>have</strong> demonstrated financial need and <strong>have</strong> demonstrated leadership commitment through participation in<br />

community service, extracurricular activities or o<strong>the</strong>r activities that reflect leadership abilities.<br />

<strong>The</strong> competition for <strong>the</strong> <strong>scholarships</strong> is open <strong>to</strong> any student who is a U.S. citizen and whose parent is a regular<br />

UPS employee on <strong>the</strong> date <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> student's application and at <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> award.<br />

• USA FUNDS ACCESS <strong>to</strong> Education Scholarships<br />

USA Funds is now accepting applications for one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir major higher-education-access initiatives, <strong>the</strong> USA<br />

Funds ACCESS <strong>to</strong> Education Scholarships. USA Funds will award up <strong>to</strong> $2.85 million in renewable<br />

<strong>scholarships</strong> <strong>to</strong> students demonstrating financial need. Full-time undergraduate students are eligible for $1,500<br />

awards, and half-time undergraduate students may qualify for $750 awards.
