http://www.gmsp.org
In its inaugural year 2000/2001, the Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) completed its first selection of students.
This program awarded 4,000 scholarships to entering freshmen, continuing undergraduate and graduate
students. The scholarship responded to one of the salient goals of GMS of providing financial assistance to lowincome
minorities with significant financial need* (*significant financial need for entering freshmen or
continuing undergraduates means Federal Pell eligibility). This assistance is expected to help minimize the
need for these students to work and eliminate the burden of loans, thus, enriching academic achievement and
completion of a college education.
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation seeks nominations for the Gates Millennium Scholars program for lowincome
students of color.
