Process:<br />

Selection <strong>of</strong> each class occurs in three phases, beginning each fall and culminating <strong>the</strong> <strong>following</strong> spring with <strong>the</strong><br />

announcement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> award recipients.<br />

o PHASE I. <strong>The</strong> first application seeks a record <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> student's overall involvement in school and<br />

community affairs as well as academic success and employment. This application is due Oc<strong>to</strong>ber 31 and<br />

culminates in <strong>the</strong> selection <strong>of</strong> 1,500 <strong>to</strong> 2,000 Semifinalists in December. Students may apply online via<br />

this site after Labor Day each academic year. Please see <strong>the</strong> FAQs or call 1-800-306-COKE with<br />

questions.<br />

o PHASE II. Semifinalists are notified and sent an expanded application in mid-December that requires<br />

detailed biographical data, an essay, a secondary school report and personal recommendations.<br />

Following <strong>the</strong> January deadline, <strong>the</strong> Program Review Committee selects 250 Finalists.<br />

o PHASE III. In <strong>the</strong> spring <strong>of</strong> each program year, Finalists attend <strong>the</strong> Scholar's Weekend in Atlanta,<br />

convened by <strong>the</strong> Foundation at its expense, <strong>to</strong> determine recipients <strong>of</strong> each level <strong>of</strong> award. <strong>The</strong> National<br />

Selection Committee designates 50 Finalists as National Scholars and 200 Finalists as Regional<br />

Scholars.<br />

Criteria: Applicant must demonstrate high academic achievement, depth <strong>of</strong> character or service orientation.<br />

Undergraduate study at 2-year institution. Designated institution: two-year degree granting institution.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Education Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mel Fisher Maritime Heritage Society is pleased <strong>to</strong> announce an award in<br />

honor <strong>of</strong> Dolores (Deo) Fisher and her extraordinary achievements and strong interests in <strong>the</strong> oceans. A cash<br />

honorarium <strong>of</strong> $1,000 and trophy will be awarded annually by May 15 th <strong>to</strong> a young woman aged 35 or youner.<br />

<strong>The</strong> award cycle opens in January and closed by mid-March <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> award year. <strong>The</strong>re is a six-member selection<br />

Committee that will decide upon and notify <strong>the</strong> winner. Certificates <strong>of</strong> honorable mention will also be awarded.<br />
