How are the scholarships awarded? Scholarship is awarded to college of students choice. Scholarship is
renewable by reapplying.

When can I apply for this scholarship? After the beginning of the fall semester.
What is the application deadline? Completed application must be received by March 31 of the award year.

Criteria:
Deadlines
o Students must demonstrate financial need.
o Students must live in PWD’s service territory (Portland,South Portland, Westbrook, Windham,
Gorham, Raymond, Cumberland, Falmouth, Scarborough, Cape Elizabeth).
o Students must have a declared major that is related to PWD’s mission to protect public health and
the environment (e.g., environmental studies, sciences, engineering, medical, dental, trades, public
administration).
o Preference will be given to a student that attends or plans to attend an accredited college or
university (Husson College, University of Southern Maine, University of New England, Southern
Maine Community College) in PWD’s member communities.
o Scholarship will be given on a one-time basis; not "renewable."
o Preference will be given to students who have an affiliation with the Portland Water District.
o Preference will be given to students that demonstrate educational excellence through GPA, SAT,
academic honors, etc.
o Preference will be given to students that demonstrate a commitment to the community through
involvement.
The $1,500 scholarship will be awarded annually to a deserving student. The scholarship committee, a sub
committee of the Board of Trustees, will review applications in the summer and award the scholarship in
September. To apply, students must complete the application by May 15.
