How are <strong>the</strong> <strong>scholarships</strong> awarded? Applicants eligible for <strong>the</strong> scholarship are reviewed and selected by <strong>the</strong><br />

executive board <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> American Postal Workers Union <strong>of</strong> Maine (APWU).<br />

Application process: Applicants must complete an application and write an essay on "Labor Unions in Maine."<br />

<strong>The</strong> Association <strong>of</strong> Operating Room Nurses <strong>of</strong> Maine <strong>of</strong>fers a scholarship <strong>to</strong> a deserving nursing student.<br />

Applicants must be Maine residents and must indicate a need for financial need.<br />

This scholarship program is for medical students from Aroos<strong>to</strong>ok County. Awards are made annually <strong>to</strong><br />

students from <strong>the</strong> County who apply and successfully compete with o<strong>the</strong>r candidates. Students must ei<strong>the</strong>r be<br />

born in Aroos<strong>to</strong>ok County, or <strong>have</strong> graduated from high school in Aroos<strong>to</strong>ok County or currently declare<br />

Aroos<strong>to</strong>ok County as <strong>the</strong>ir home. Application deadline is April 1 st .<br />

Only Maine residents, undergraduate students only, with financial need pursuing accredited degree programs in<br />

post-secondary educational institutions are eligible. In general, <strong>the</strong> Foundation defines Maine residency as<br />

residence in Maine four consecutive years immediately prior <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> application. Grants are made for one<br />

academic year and paid <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> institution.<br />

Deadline – Applications must be post marked before February 15, 2007. <strong>The</strong> Foundation begins notifying<br />

applicants <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> award results after April 15 th .<br />

<strong>The</strong> Billy Cheverie Memorial Scholarship provides scholarship assistance <strong>to</strong> graduating seniors <strong>of</strong> Portsmouth,<br />

York, and Winnacunnet high schools, and Traip Academy.<br />

Students from <strong>the</strong>se communities who attend St. Thomas High School, Philips Exeter Academy, or Berwick<br />

Academy are also eligible <strong>to</strong> apply.<br />

Awards are made <strong>to</strong> students who demonstrate a commitment <strong>to</strong> leadership, community service and academic<br />

effort. Fund advisors also <strong>have</strong> an interest in students who <strong>have</strong> participated in athletics.
