Requirements for Application: Student must be in final academic year of an accredited professional physical
therapy education program; must complete all degree requirements (clinical and didactic) and/or be eligible to
graduate; must show evidence of high scholastic achievement and evidence of contributions in the areas of
minority affairs and services; student must possess potential for professional excellence as a physical therapist,
and must be a member of the APTA.
There is a five-step application process necessary to be considered for scholarship (outlined in the cover letter
and application packet).

AMBUCS is an organization dedicated to creating independence and opportunities for people with disabilities.
Scholarships also are awarded annually to occupational therapy, audiology, and speech pathology students.
The APTA’s long-standing relationship with AMBUCS-alone and as a member organization of the TriAlliance
(American Occupational Therapy Association, American Physical Therapy Association, and the American
Speech, Language, Hearing Association)-has provided exceptional opportunities and experiences for PTs and
APTA staff members. AMBUCS representatives have attended APTA’s Combined Sections Meeting and
Annual Conference. APTA has sent physical therapist representatives to attend and present at AMBUCS’
annual summer meeting.
The National AMBUCS, Inc. offers scholarships to students (U.S. citizens) in their junior/senior year in a
bachelor’s degree program, or a graduate program leading to a master’s or doctoral degree. Awards range from
$500 to $1,500 annually. There is one two-year award in the amount of $6,000. Approximately $225,000 is
awarded annually. Award monies are deposited each semester to the student’s credit account with the financial
aid office of the educational institution.

Who is eligible – fully trained Allopathic (MD) and Osteopathic (D)) physicians with the specialties of Family
Medicine, General Pediatrics, General Internal Medicine, General Psychiatry, or Obstetrics/Gynecology;
Primary Care Nurse Practitioners and Certified Nurse-Midwives; Primary Care Physician Assistants; Dentists
and Dental Hygienists; and Clinical Psychologists, Clinical Social Workers, Psychiatric Nurse Specialists, and
Marriage and Family Therapists.

• National Health Service Corps – State Loan Repayment Program
The National Health Service Corps State Loan Repayment Program is a part of the overall strategy of the NHSC
to improve access to primary and preventive health services for under-served communities and populations. The
NHSC provices funds directly to States for the operation of Loan Repayment Programs. The Federal
Government and States provide a dollar for dollar match to assist in the repayment of qualifying educational
loans for eligible participants.
